    GUIDE BOOK

The world never stop changing and developing. By the time, people s needs and

problems increase in either number or type. Chemical product has special place in supporting

the development. People and civilization become more and more inseparable to chemical

product. So many upstream and downstream chemical products have been made. But,

innovation and creativity are keys to produce the best one accepted by customer. Students,

especially undergraduate, have their own role to find problem and bring their dream, idea, and knowledge to catalyze problem solving by their product. In order to help facilitating

brilliant idea and the future development, Department of Chemical Engineering Universitas

Indonesia Student Body (IMTK-UI) held The 5th Chemical Product Design Competition

    (CPDC).

The 5th CPDC with the theme Creating an Innovative and Economical Chemical

Product. This competition aims to enhance student creativity in developing products based on

innovative chemicals to tackle the problems in any field of application. Creating Innovative

means designing a product that can solve the current problems. Economical means products

designed should provide economical added value and benefits. This guide is a reference bookfor participants to be able to participate in this competition.

5th Chemical Product Design Competition (CPDC) is an international product design

competition that compete students creativities and ideas on designing the concept of

chemical product. The submitted product in this competition should be related to our

theme Creating and Innovative and Economical Chemical Product. Limitations of chemical

product that may be submitted are as follow:

    1. Product Must be Chemical Products

Product must have relevance to the process or chemical concepts with the following restrictions:

Chemical products that have a specific purpose

Example: the field of foods and supplements, pharmaceuticals, daily necessities, etc.

The instrument can produce chemical changes

Example: medical equipment, water purifier, waste material processor, etc.

    2. Product Must Have To Score For Humans or the Environment

    2

Variations in product creation can be:

Increasing the value of the product

Adding value to a product by means of chemical change, add or subtract anything

    from the existing chemical products.

Creation of new productCreating chemical product should be completely new.

    3. Product Must Have Economical Benefit

Product can be made for mass scale or specific use

Product for mass scale must have economic benefit perspective.

Product for specific use must have clear consumer target.

    4. Product Must be Well Design and Easy Manufactured

Product must have good design in component, shape, safety, endurance and

    attractiveness.

Product must be able to produce in larger scale efficiently.

    1. 1st Stage Selection; Abstract Selection

First stage selection is intended for evaluating concept and background, which

every participant send the abstract using predetermined format via official e-mail of 5th

CPDC. Schedule of abstract submission is from October 25th - November 25th 2012. Terms of

abstract writing could be seen at the Appendix section.

    Announcement of the Result

Participants who pass the 1st stage selection would be announced via PetroGas

    teams.

    2. 2nd Stage Selection; Papers Selection

    Participants who pass the 1st

selection phase will proceed to the second stage ofselection, the selection of papers. In this stage, participants have to make paper explaining

the detail of their products design. The product design paper must meet the rules of designing

a product. The provision of paper writing can be found in the appendix.

The deadline of paper submission is February 2nd, 2013. The eight selected finalist

teams will go forward to the grand final. The announcement of the eight finalist teams will be

    announced on February 17, 2013.

    3. Grand Finale

Eight (8) finalists who pass the second selection papers will be given the opportunity tomake a dummy / prototype of product and present their product in front of judges from

academics and business practitioners, and PetroGasDays 2013s participants coming from

various companies and institutions. Grand final will be held on March 17 th 2013 and the

announcement of the winner (winner I, II, and III) will be conducted on the day of the closing

    ceremony PetrogasDays 2013.

Here are the things that must be prepared by the finalists in the grand final:

    Presentation

Presentations should represent the whole paper and detail. The goal is to deliver

products that are designed to judges. Then, the design of the product will be tested bya judges based on the standardized assessment.

    Dummy / Prototype

Dummy / prototype of chemical products that have been made by the participants

should also be shown at the time of presentation.

    X-Banner Design

Finalists sending design of X-banner products (in the form of Cdr and Jpg) via email

CPDC registration. Delivery can be made starting on March 1st 2013.

    Format Chapter I Preface

The preface contains background, problem identification and problem boundaries. State the

requirement analysis and idea selection based on chemical product design principle on thebackground part. The requirement analysis and idea selection includes this following.

1.1 The Requirement Analysis and Idea Selection1.1.1The Current Similar Product

This part contains the comparison between the current similar products with the

designed product. The discussion is based on among member discussion and

interview to the costumer who have used the current product. This part must answer

    the following questions:

What is the main function of the current product?

What kind of innovation that will be accepted or not accepted by costumer?

Where and how the previous product was commercialized?

Will the new commercialization method be applicable if the characteristic of

    product changed?

What kind of patent that can protect the previous product or the new product?

1.1.2Product SpecificationThis part shows the new product specification and the differentiation between the

new product with the previous product.

1.1.3General ConceptThis part shows the list of all ideas and concepts for the new product that

appropriate with the idea of the designing team. It would be better if the listabove are organized into some categories. The categories then should be

compared one each other in order to define the best one or two categories that

    will be further reconsidered.

1.2 Idea Selection1.2.1Selection of the Best Concept

This part continues the previous part; it purposes to reduce the concept list and

idea with reasons eliminating the other concept while defending the others. Usually

one until three concepts will be chosen and have further evaluation. The selected

paper is based on the supporting calculation provided on appendix section to

prove concept potential. This part should answer question about patent thatenable for the new product.

1.2.2Product Architectural DesignThis part shows the design of the new product, fully equipped with dimentional

sketch and design calculation as a reference on appendix.

    Chapter II Theoretical Base

This part contains basic theories that are able to support the design of chemical products that

are chosen by the participants. One of the most important element in Chapter II is explanation

of local resources used and how far the resources have been used and applied by

    communities.

    Chapter III Chemical Product Description

This part contains detail explanation of chemical product design like characteristic and

specification of chemical product to give a clear and detail image of the product. One of the

most important thing in Chapter II is the explanation of local natural resources that is used and

how far the natural resources have been utilized by local people.

    Chapter IV Prototype

This part shows the elaboration of the ready-model, testing-procedure and explanation of

advantages of the product compared with other competitors.

    Chapter V Product Manufacture

This part shows the suggested manufacture method of the product to ensure that all product

specifications are fulfilled. This part consists of the production process flow diagram,

description of the production process, the means of production processes, marketsegmentation, production capacity and balance of mass and energy, Production Time, and

    Production Schedule

    Chapter VI Product Economical

This part discusses the potential of market for the new product, attached with estimated-sale-

cost and market analysis. Process writing of this part must be proper with market analysis

norm in the Engineering Economics Subject. In estimate-sale-cost section, you can explain about

cash flow of manufacture (include total capital invesment, operational cost, fixed charge, cost

breakdown, break event point), calculation payback periode method, calculation internal rate

of return, calculation net present value, calculation return of invesment, and sensitivity analysis.

And, in market analysis, you can explain about distribution raw material and product (include

location and supply chain management) and inventory (raw material and product).

    Chapter VII Conclusion and Suggestion

This part consists of conclusions and suggestions about design of product have been made on

    full paper.
