POMC & OTHER VICTIMS OF HOMICIDE SURVIVORS - There will be a meeting on Monday, December 3, 2018. Meetings are the first Monday of each month and take place at the Peace House located at: 2116 N.E. 18th Ave., Portland, OR. (See map below.) POMC Meetings are a time for sharing experiences and emotions. We share a common situation, we are free to express any emotion: anger, sadness, frustration and laughter. We begin by sharing stories, sometimes focusing on a particular topic. Occasionally, we invite a speaker. We come together to support each other, not to judge. I am not prejudice, however, I cannot think of a better place for the location of our POMC Oregon and Washington Memorial Wall. The beautiful site they gave us is one of the most coveted pieces of property at Mt. View Cemetery. The site is surrounded by redwood trees and it is one of the largest memorial walls in the United States built for POMC members. David West, Designer, and Builder designed it. David is now in the process of sending his plans to Jon Waverly, Park, and Cemetery Operation Manger for Oregon City. Bob Elledge, co-victim of homicide, is the contractor and they are excited to get started in planning and building our new wall. We are still asking for donations from members, businesses or others who are interested in finishing the wall. This wall will always be a comfort and source of solace for our members. It is also a reminder to all people in Oregon and Washington on what happens in the aftermath of homicide. Homicide can never be resolved.

Protection of society is as important to the people in Oregon and Washington as having services for feeding and caring for those in our society who go without. Violence has no part in a society. Many names on the wall are young children and babies. Some of our loved ones are victims of serial killers. Others are victims of psychopaths who should not be allowed out until they have served their sentence and proven they are not a threat to society. Our loved one names will not just be remembered because they were murdered. They will be remembered because we will make changes to protect others and in doing this we let those who commit violent crimes know that part of Oregon’s Constitution is “Protection of Society.” It is a right all Americans deserve.

Our POMC Memorial Wall is a reminder to all that murder can happen to anyone. Simon Wiesenthal, a Holocaust survivor, said: “If we forget, it will happen again.” Our wall is a reminder of what Mr. Wiesenthal felt was most important to do. He spent the rest of his life trying to get justice for the millions of people who were murdered during the Holocaust.

Getting back to Mr. View Cemetery, we are fortunate to have our memorial built at one of the most historic cemeteries in the United States. Oregon City has a history of human settlement dating back over 3,000 year, when Native Americans camped near Willamette Falls. In the late 1820’s farmers, hunters, trappers, and explorers of the powerful British fur-trading operations, The Hudson’s Bay, settled near Willamette Falls with the help of Dr. John Mcloughlin, Chief Factor of the Company. The Hudson Bay Company moved on, but McLaughlin persisted in establishing a foothold in the area.He had a sawmill and flourmill built near the falls, making use of the first water power in Oregon City. This was used in planning our memorial. We designed the wall to replicate Willamette Falls.

In 1849, General Joseph Lane appointed Oregon City as the first Territorial Government by President Polk. Oregon City was designated as the territory’s first capitol, and continued on until 1852, when the seat of the government was moved to Salem.

California’s gold rush of 1848 spurred Oregon City’s development through the demand for flour, wheat, and timber. This growth encouraged an influx of additional settlers, some of whom has first tried their luck in the gold fields to the south. The beautiful Willamette River was a source of waterpower that encouraged businesses to come to Oregon City. Development of river traffic drew boat builders and steamboat captains to the area. All of these important people were buried at Mountain View Cemetery and helped put Oregon City on the map. Mt. View Cemetery is a source of history for the Northwest.

The Pioneer Section, located across from our Memorial Wall at Mt. View Cemetery, is part of the history of Oregon. Besides famous war heroes, 300 Civil War Veterans, Indians from that period that helped the early pioneers, early politicians, civil leaders from that period, and settlers rest at Mountain View Cemetery.

The only Parents of Murdered Children Memorial in the Northwest is located at Mt. View Cemetery. We are so proud to share this beautiful cemetery. Mt. View Cemetery is the keeper of our loved one’s names. Retired Park and Cemetery Manager, Larry Potter was the first Cemetery Manager to help us be given a home for our Memorial Wall before he retired. Debra Allen, Office Specialist I, and Jinny King, Office Specialist III, go out of their way to help us in any way possible. All of the employees are awesome when it comes to seeing that we have everything we might need. Mt. View Cemetery also has a security system to prevent any type of vandalism.

Finally, we are going to be starting our new wall. We will also be doing more landscaping .We will be working with those responsible for the Veterans Wall so that our memorials will complement one another. Ours will be a double-sided wall to accommodate 1,000 names, a dream of so many. Finally, we will be doing funding while the memorial is being built to accommodate unexpected and additional expenses that can come up. DECEMBER 2018 MESSAGE FROM MARYSOME OF THE MOST HELPFUL ADVICE COMES FROM

SAYINGS ON OUR POMC MEMORIAL WALL AND MONTHLY MEETINGS.

When we started to build our Oregon/Washington Memorial wall in 2013, we wanted to show support and understanding. We wanted also to educate the public and the people who work with co-victims of homicide. One of the first things we did was to ask members what sayings or words of wisdom helped them the most. We asked members if they would send us the thoughts and saying that meant the most to them and what they believed helped them the most.

We collected our information and had it engraved on the back of our Memorial Wall and on our rock pillars. We hoped when people saw the words they could find comfort through this “nightmare from hell”. The quote that seemed the most valuable was: “HEALING COMES FROM HELPING OTHERS”.

When I write, teach, or speak on the aftermath of homicide I also include: “It is most important to tell your story.” If we tell our story or journal, we release it and though it takes a long time doing this, we are ridding it from our mind. If not, it plays continually over and over in our mind.

One example I would like to share is to tell you about a recent POMC monthly meeting. I will never use names of the people who attended or any personal information. Of the 32 plus years I have attended meeting, this meeting was the most helpful and loving meeting I have ever facilitated. I felt I was on a high when I listened to members telling their stories and other members not only responding, they offered to meet with the members who were experiencing extreme depression. They listened when the newer members told of their pain and depression and shared phone numbers and addresses. It was actually beautiful to see them share and the look of trust and friendship returned by the two women that were so depressed.

Believe me, we all have been there. Yet, these men and women reaching out were creating such a loving and empathetic atmosphere. They validated what the new members were saying. They offered credence to what the two members were going through. Hugs and handing out tissues for tears were so appreciated. No one just told them what to do. They offered to be there to help them.

Loneliness and isolation is activated when a homicide occurs. In the book, “Aftermath in the Wake of Murder”, Carrie Freitag and Margaret Kerouac wrote: “The ability to overcome the isolation and loneliness of homicidal grief

ultimately depends upon re-establishing and maintaining relationships with the living as well as forging a new sense of connection with our deceased loved one. If we are not secure in our sense of connection with our deceased loved one, we may become frozen in time—afraid that living, changing, and healing will mean moving away from our loved one. Likewise, if we cannot re-establish our desire and ability to connect with those living, we also run the risk of becoming socially stagnant and left behind.” Sounds like a “catch 22.” However, this does happen. Humans are social beings. They are a wonderful source of connecting. You do not have to explain to another co-victim how you feel. In addition, a co-victim of homicide priorities are generally in the right place. I often tell people that if they want a person who does not judge them, a POMC survivor is the best place to go.

I would also like to share some of the other writings from our wall:

“Love lives on in the little things you shared”“The pain just doesn’t go away. You make room for it.”

“Love lives on in the smiles you can never forget.”“The moment you think of giving up, think of the reason

why you held on so long.”“Grief isn’t something you get over; it is something you go

through.”“Dignity and Respect are essential for victims and co-

victims to survive.”“A smile soothes the soul and helps heal the heart.”

“In sadness, there is also joy that you had such a person to love.”

“Even the darkest night will end and the sun will shine.”“Sometimes, the strongest people in the morning are the

people who cried all night.”“I may not be there yet, but I’m closer then yesterday.”

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT“Healing comes from helping others.”

My Christmas and New Year wish for all of you is that your pain will be softer. Your love for your loved one will never be less. In fact, you will be able to hold them nearer and dearer to your heart. You will not want to try to hide memories that are painful because the happy memories from your life together will get stronger. This takes a lot of time and help from others. There are people out there who will help you and my last wish is that you will find them. You definitely are not alone. Please continue to use your telephone friends as well.

DECEMBER 2018 HOLIDAY MEETING

On Monday, December 3, 2018, we will be celebrating our annual holiday meeting. We celebrate the first meeting in December so that we can be with fellow members who understand. It is also a special because each member will be given a special ornament from our holiday tree. We will have a short meeting together and then a special holiday program. We will also have our picture board on display. If you would like a picture of your loved one shown on a screen, please send it as soon as possible.
