Wes ParrishFNGLA 2012-2013 PresidentPRESIDENT’S LETTER

It’s spring time and you know what that means? Yes, it’s time for FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days at Walt Disney World’s Epcot attraction!

As our businesses climb out of the economic downturn of the past few years, don’t we need to try to transform our businesses to work best in the new normal?

I think most of us agree that we in Florida do not even come close to utilizing annuals and color as much as they are used in the landscapes and gardens in many other parts of our country. Is this an area where your business could expand? If so, then FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days with its breeder networking opportunities and advanced look at new varieties in real world placements is a once-a-year program you should not miss.

For those of you who have never participated, this is our Association’s once a year effort to bring breeders from all over the country together, with Florida growers and landscape professionals, to showcase their new varieties and test them under Florida conditions.

This year, growers, landscape firms and garden center retailers can see the 141 new varieties and talk with the 14

leading breeders about all of these new flowering plants. Landscape professionals get an advance look at what is coming for the future -- and in a challenging, ever-changing market, every advantage counts.

In this year’s event, the participating breeders are: All American Selections; Ameriseed; Ball FloraPlant; Burpee Home Gardens; PanAmerican; Benary; Grimes Horticulture; Bates Sons and Daughters; Suntory; Sun-Fire Nurseries; Classic Caladiums LLC; Green-fuse Botanicals; Hem Genetics; Sakata Seed America; and, the University of Florida/IFAS. What a unique opportunity not just to sneak a peek, but to gain an in-depth look at what is coming through our industry’s plant development pipeline specifically for our huge Florida market.

There are Epcot and local garden tours, lectures and time for personal evaluation of the trial gardens. Some of the varieties are already planted in Epcot as well. There are three test garden sites and over 4,500 plants installed in all. The three sites are unique growing areas and deliver great opportunities to test these new plants under Central Florida’s heat and humidity.

Contact your FNGLA office today to register. You will be treated to quite an eye-opening event.

Senate Group Reaches Landmark Agreement on Immigration Reform Agriculture Provisions

The American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA) and its partner, OFA – The Association of Horticulture Professionals, applaud a landmark agreement in principle on the agricultural provisions of the Senate immigration reform bill. The agreement was reached by the Agriculture Workforce Coalition (AWC), of which ANLA is a founding member and FNGLA is a supporting member; the United Farm Workers (UFW); and, key Senators engaged in the process. The framework and objectives of this agreement represent a major step toward ensuring that America’s farmers and ranchers as well as nursery, greenhouse, and Christmas tree growers have access to a legal workforce now and in the future.

“We are deeply appreciative of the leadership efforts of Senators Dianne Feinstein, Marco Rubio, Orrin Hatch, and Michael Bennet for their steadfast help toward fostering the agreement between agricultural employers and farm workers,” said Craig Regelbrugge, ANLA vice president for government relations and research. “We also thank all members of the Senate Gang of Eight for their commitment to modernizing America’s immigration system to better serve our nation’s interests.”

The agricultural framework agreement includes a new, more flexible and market-oriented agricultural worker program. It would also provide an earned residency solution for experienced farm workers who meet several conditions, including fulfilling a future agricultural work requirement. ANLA has been deeply involved in the effort to shape and advance key elements of a solution over many years. Soon, it will be time for ANLA and OFA members, along with state horticulture industry associations and the industry-at-large to urge Congress to act.

ANLA and OFA will support inclusion of this joint agreement in any final immigration reform package. “The agreement reflects the unique challenges facing many of our member employers, and offers solutions directly addressing those needs,” said Michael V. Geary, CAE, chief executive of both ANLA and OFA. “We look forward to bringing enthusiastic support to immigration reform this year.”

FDACS Accepting Nominations for Agricultural-EnvironmentalLeadership Award: Submit Your NominationsThe Commissioner’s Agricultural-Environmental Leadership Award program annually recognizes Florida agriculturalists who are in the forefront of developing and adopting environmentally innovative farming practices.

Since 1994, this program has helped highlight the efforts of the state’s growers and ranchers. New GI-BMP DVD Training Makes it Easier to be in Compliance Beginning January 1, 2014, all commercial fertilizer applicators in Florida must have the FDACS Limited Commercial Fertilizer Applicator Certificate (LCFAC). Getting an LCFAC – sometimes called a “fertilizer license” – requires GI BMP training. The GI-BMP training is also required by some local governments to obtain a work permit.

Understandably, no one likes to lose a day’s wages and profit, or pull employees off the job to attend local and state-mandated training. Now, Green Industry professionals have another option for training and certification without ever stepping foot in the classroom. The GI BMP DVD training is available for those seeking independent, self-paced learning or in-house group training and testing. There is no charge for the DVD set, which can be ordered online at https://gibmp.ifas.ufl.edu.The Green Industries Best Management Practices (“GI-BMP”) Training Program teaches landscape cultural practices that protect the environment, especially the state’s water resources. The UF/IFAS Florida Friendly-Landscaping™ Program works in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, professional organizations, and industry stakeholders to provide this science-based educational program to Florida’s landscape workers.

The new DVD training option provides greater flexibility to complete required training when and where it is convenient. New employees can easily be trained as soon as they are hired. Weather conditions that idle a work crew can become opportunities to train. The DVD training modules can be viewed using a standard DVD player via television or on a computer. Train at your own pace – in a one-day session or spread over several days or weeks.

To receive a certificate using the DVD training, register online as a DVD student at https://gibmp.ifas.ufl.edu. View the complete DVD training (six modules). Then log on to your student account to sign the affidavit of completion and take the certificate test, online or in person.

You can take the certificate test online or in person at your local extension office or with another approved proctor. There is a $15 fee for the online test option; no charge to take the test in person. “Approved proctors” include Certified Pest Control Operators (CPCOs) who have already completed GI-BMP training. To qualify as a proctor and order tests, CPCOs must have a GI-BMP training certificate as well as a current CPCO license. They can then proctor DVD-trained employees for whom they would be responsible to provide training per 482.091 Florida Statutes to meet the requirements for FDACS pesticide ID card holders. (Those employees need not meet the requirements for a pesticide ID card holder at the time they take the GI-BMP test).

Other options for GI-BMP Training and Certificate:• In-person classes are held at Extension offices and other locations around the state. Search the statewide schedule on the GI-BMP website to find a class in your area.• The training program is also available online. The $15 fee includes access to training modules, review quizzes, and the online test. You can also elect to take the test at an Extension office.• The GI-BMP instructor program certifies qualified individuals to deliver the GI-BMP training. Many companies have certified GI-BMP instructors on staff to train their employees. Click “Instructor Program” on the website sidebar to learn more.• Become an FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP). This training is sponsored by the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association http://www.fngla.org

America in Bloom Judges Visit Winter ParkJudges from the America in Bloom (AIB) national awards program visited Winter Park on May

2 & 3. This is Winter Park’s first entry in the America in Bloom national awards program. The town is one of 28 communities across America working on local revitalization programs with the hopes of receiving a prestigious America in Bloom national award. Winter Park is competing against Wake Forest, NC; West Chicago, IL; and Kent, OH in the 25,001 to 30,000 population category.

America in Bloom judges spend two days in each town and do extensive touring, conduct interviews with municipal representatives, and meet with community volunteers. They evaluate six criteria: overall impression, environmental efforts, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscapes, and floral displays. These criteria are examined across four sectors: commercial, municipal, residential, and community involvement. The judges will prepare

an extensive written evaluation offering observations of exceptional practices and suggestions for improvements. It is given to the community after awards are announced in September. Many towns use these evaluations as a blueprint for further enhancements to their quality of life and to support grant applications.

To date, more than 200 towns and cities from 41 states have participated in the program. Awards will be announced on September 21, 2013 at AIB’s National Symposium and Awards, held this year in conjunction with The Landscape Show.

Commissioner Putnam Celebrates Florida Ag Literacy DaySurrounded by more than 50 kids from Apalachee Tapestry Magnet School of the Arts, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam read “Florida’s Farm History!” today in the historic Senate Chambers of the Old Capitol.

The event, in recognition of Florida Ag Literacy Day, taught the children the history of Florida agriculture, starting in the 1500s when the Native Americans were growing melons and maize through the ship-building of the 1700s and the advent of railroads in the 1800s. The 1900s saw poultry farming, innovations in orange juice and devastation from hurricanes, while today’s farmers are reaping the benefits of scientific advancements in agricultural production and processing.

“As we celebrate Florida’s 500th anniversary this year, I’m proud to share the history of Florida agriculture with others,” said Commissioner Putnam. “It’s such a great opportunity to share this book with children and teach them about where the food they eat every day comes from.”

Commissioner Putnam read the book as the children followed along with their own copies. Afterwards, the kids talked about their favorite foods to eat, from peanut butter to oranges, which are all produced in Florida.

The 10th Annual Florida Agriculture Literacy Day celebrated 500 years of Florida agriculture history. Commissioner Putnam joins more than 1,300 farmers, growers and ranchers from Florida Farm Bureau, Florida Cattlemen

and Cattlewomen, Florida Citrus Mutual, Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association, Farm Credit, Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Association, Dairy Council of Florida, Florida Peanut Producers, FFA students and teachers, University of Florida IFAS extension agents, Florida 4-H agents and students and other agriculture industry volunteers around the state who will read in honor of the event.

They will visit more than 2,800 elementary classrooms and reach more than 56,000 Florida students with the message of the importance of Florida agriculture and the role it has played in the Sunshine State’s history.

Florida Ag Literacy Day is sponsored by Florida Agriculture in the Classroom Inc., a nonprofit organization that develops and trains teachers and agriculture industry volunteers in agriculture curriculum in order to educate students on the importance of agriculture. It also provides grant money to teachers and volunteers for projects that teach children where their food comes from and the importance of Florida’s farmers. The nonprofit is funded by sales of the specialty agricultural license plate known as the Ag Tag.

“Florida Agriculture Literacy Day is a popular program that puts agriculture industry volunteers from around the state in touch with students in the classroom to teach students about agriculture,” said Ken Barton, chairman of the Florida Agriculture in the Classroom board of directors and a representative of the Florida Peanut Producers Association.
