It’s not always you get nearly 6,000 people to show up for a 40th anniversary celebration, but that was the case for the 2013 Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition. Thousands of industry professionals from around the world came to Ft. Lauderdale to do business with one another, learn industry trends and insights, as well as find new ideas and resources for improved business success.

Taking place January 23-25 at the Broward County Convention Center, TPIE drew attendees from 46 different countries. With nearly 400 companies exhibiting in TPIE, it continues to be the best resource for tropical plants and foliage and related supplies and services in the world.“TPIE 2013 was a great experience for everyone who was here,” reported Charlie Martin, H. B. Martin, Inc. and chairman of TPIE. “You could feel the positive energy and sense the upbeat attitudes and all-around excitement. There were plants from floor to ceiling, all types: big and small, indoor, outdoor, and patio with fabulous colors in both the flowers and the leaves. It was fantastic!”

Nearly 100 people opted to come in a day early and take part in the TPIE Road Show. Participants toured four diverse nurseries in Homestead: Florida Tuxedo Plants, Plants in Design, Consolidated Foliage and DeLeon’s Bromeliads, with a lunch stop at the Fruit and Spice Park.

The first day of the show opened with an enlightening presentation by Dan Waldschmidt, blog author of Edgy Conversations. Dan not only provided practical ideas and business considerations for the full-house audience, he offered complimentary one-on-one consultations for interested attendees the remainder of the day. Sponsored by Hermann Engelmann Greenhouses and SK, TPIE’s Opening Session has become a popular first hour of TPIE to get a positive, yet critical, business mind-set before getting out on the show floor.

Wes ParrishFNGLA 2012-2013 PresidentPRESIDENT’S LETTER

At the risk of jinxing anything, it sure seems our industry is on the mend!

Another TPIE has come and gone, yet this was not just another trade show. This was TPIE’s 40th anniversary! Of

course, it was an outstanding show visually. It always is. One cannot possibly exhibit that much tropical foliage and colorful flowers without looking tremendous. Yet, it was the attitudes that made this TPIE 2013 even better. Exhibitors and buyers alike were very positive and upbeat.

TPIE started with a terrific opening session given by a dynamic speaker. Dan Waldschmidt’s company helps businesses improve by looking at things differently, finding an edge. He is a very popular business blogger and got things rolling in a very big way.

There was a steady stream of quality demonstrations that you didn’t even have to leave the TPIE show floor to experience. The TPIE Short Course was the top notch national event for which it has come to be known. Buyers were up 4.4% this year and from 46 countries -- doubling the number from last year. Buyers also came from 44 of our 50 United States. Even though this was so, I kept hearing it wasn’t the total,

but the quality of the show visitors this year that made TPIE so great. Good quantity and great quality. Sounds like a winning combo to me!

I had the opportunity to hand out booth awards with TPIE show chairman Charlie Martin. It was great fun to see the facial reactions of the award winners. Many worked extra hard and came up with new and engaging booth ideas, so they were so tickled and proud to be rewarded for their efforts.

I made a point of trying to visit every new exhibitor and welcome each of them to TPIE. I’m pleased to say I succeeded in visiting with most of them too! These new TPIE exhibitors were somewhere between very glad they were there and ecstatic to the point of saying there was no need to do any other show ever again! This group of new exhibitors was over 50% growers and the others represented a wide range of very useful allied products -- from soil amendments to apps for smart phones and tablets.

With trade shows struggling across the country, it gives me great pride to see how well FNGLA’s shows are faring. If you missed this year’s TPIE show, you missed THE tropical foliage event of the year!

Another favorite TPIE connecting point took place at the end of the first day of the show at TPIE’s Happy Hour. Sponsored by Sun Parasol, Suntory Collection, this popular event had thousands of TPIE attendees gathering around the outside Fountain Courtyard to enjoy spicy South Florida entertainment, a refreshing drink and the breezy and warm conditions you can find only in Ft. Lauderdale in mid-January.

For those looking for quick and inspiring how to’s with tropical plants, the TPIE demonstrations offered a variety of topics all three days of the show. With the help of the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), over a dozen TPIE demonstrations provided creativity and inspiration in brief 15-20 minute sessions on the show floor.

For those interested in more formal and in-depth education, the TPIE Short Course offered business and technical topics with a focus on the interiorscape side of the industry. Nearly 300 professionals took part in this 2-day educational forum. Demonstrating the unity of the profession, the TPIE Short Course was presented jointly this year by three major industry associations: FNGLA, OFA, and PLANET.

TPIE is known for the exceptional displays which its exhibitors create and this year was no exception. Whether it was an orchid-draped chandelier hanging in the center of a booth or verdant living walls being featured or unique tropical specimens on display, TPIE exhibitors know how to put together an impressive show. As TPIE booth award judge Robert Bowden said, “There are so many fabulous exhibits at TPIE, it is really a challenge to decide on the best of the best.” This year’s judges included Robert Bowden, Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando; Sally Harvey, Landscapes Ontario Horticultural Trades Association, Ontario, Canada; Tony Burzo, Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas; and Janet Black, representing the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), Baltimore, MD. Congratulations to Delray Plants for receiving the Best of Show booth award. For the complete list of 2013 booth award winners, visit http://www.fngla.org/TPIE/boothawards.aspx.

TPIE exhibitors featured dozens of new plants and products. Buyers at the show had an opportunity to vote for their favorites. Winner of the 2013 TPIE Favorite New Foliage Plant was Alcantrea ‘Julieta’ (submitted by Hawaiian Sunshine Nursery, Inc.); favorite new flowering plant was Sun Parasol ‘Pretty Deep Red’ (submitted by Suntory/Sun-Fire Nurseries); and favorite new product was EasyGroHydro Tropical Plants (submitted by NGM Productions).

Retail consultant and leader of The Garden Center Group, Robert Hendrickson, said TPIE leads the list of trade shows as “the prettiest trade show in the industry due to the number of plant-focused booths. And not just plants... really cool plants that create the transition from indoor to patio to pool to garden to landscape…Cool plants is what TPIE is all about.”TPIE buyers serve to choose some of the show’s coolest plants and products each year. To see the 2013 TPIE Cool Plants and Products Award winners, visit http://www.fngla.org/TPIE/showcase.aspx#TPIECoolProductsAwards.

“With the upbeat comments about future business, countless orders being written at the show and new business contacts made, TPIE 2013 has set a very positive and busy pace for the rest of the year, “ said Linda Adams, TPIE Show Manager. “Let’s hope TPIE’s robust activities are a sign that the industry as a whole is moving forward again.”

Produced by FNGLA, TPIE 2014 will take place January 22-24 in Ft. Lauderdale. Stay tuned to http://www.tpie.org for updates and additional TPIE information.

Silent Auction & Annual Reception at TPIE Benefit National Foliage Foundation (NFF)TPIE brings great opportunity for the industry and the National Foliage Foundation once again, held its annual fundraising reception during the Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) at the Broward County Convention Center. Expanded from last year, a Silent Auction was held on the tradeshow floor. Industry businesses and members were given the opportunity to sponsor baskets and all TPIE attendees had the opportunity to place bids on the baskets. Silent auction bidding came to a close just as the annual NFF reception got underway.

Celebrating 26 years of giving back to the industry, NFF recognized endowment holders who have been contributing for many years, such as the Dick Fuhr Memorial Fishing Tournament, and those that have just started like the Plant Geek Ride. Through pledges and contributions over the years, NFF has raised over $300,000 for scholarship and education and nearly $500,000 dollars for research. An additional $23,000 in pledges were raised during the reception which was sponsored by OHP. The reception is an opportunity to recognize those individuals who have contributed to the Foundation’s portfolio and share the message of NFF’s annual support of foliage research programs and scholarship opportunities.

A primary objective of NFF is to fund projects with the potential to enhance development of the foliage industry and increase use of foliage plants. NFF also supports the FNGLA’s established research priorities and will give special consideration to research proposals that address the industry’s priority needs.

Special thanks to Silent Auction basket sponsors: AmeriScape Landscape Management Services, Heart of Florida Greenhouses, Kraft Gardens, Morning Dew Tropicals, Parrish Nursery, Rockledge Gardens and Dr. Terril Nell.

For more information about the National Foliage Foundation, or for details on setting up your own endowment within the NFF, contact Linda Reindl, 407-295-7994 or email [email protected].

Thank You Reception Sponsor:
