It’s time to tell the story of how plants get their start and the Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival is the right place to do just that. FNGLA’s Floriculture Field Days committee is busy planning a great educa-tional conference for May 12-13, 2011, incor-porating performance trials back into the mix. This conference marks a new opportunity to showcase Florida’s next floriculture field trials. The call for breeder participation is out and beds are filling up fast!

In 2010, the committee made a commitment to take a year off and re-evaluate the program. They stepped to the plate and identified an experienced partner to assist in the performance trials; identified a new location; and determined the logistical aspects of not only an educational program, but how to incorporate the develop-ment of the field trials.

FNGLA and Disney’s Horticulture team have now teamed up to showcase the newest flower-ing plant releases and the greatest innovations in the Floriculture Industry. Hosted during the Epcot® International Flower and Garden Festival, FNGLA will broaden its successful partnership with Walt Disney World and host industry field

trials for annuals, perennials and vegetative crops in conjunction with a cutting-edge industry edu-cational conference.

FNGLA knows Walt Disney World’s Horticulture team has the experience and the ideal location to not only tell the awesome story of how plants get their start, but also has the ability to showcase them to approximately 2.4 million guests at Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival. Visit the Floriculture Section of FNGLA’s web site to access important breeder information and make the commitment to support this new program. Questions? Please contact Linda Reindl at the FNGLA office, (800) 375-3642.

Governor-Elect Visits FNGLA Member CompanyFocusing on his campaign promise to “get Floridians back to work” and promoting his “7 steps to 700,000 jobs plan,” Governor-elect Rick Scott embarked on a five-day tour of the state. Florida’s agricultural industry took center-stage as Scott visited Delray Plants Co. on Day 2 of the tour.

Florida Governor-elect Rick Scott toured Delray Plants Co., one of the nation’s largest foliage growers and longtime FNGLA member, as one of his stops on his week-long “jobs” tour. On December 7, Scott met with a group of Highlands

County agriculture and community leaders. The meeting focused on Florida’s agricultural industry and the challenges which impede the growth and expansion of Florida’s agricultural engine. The roundtable discussion, which lasted more than one hour, covered a broad array of issues including duplicative regulations, labor, growth management and property rights, science and technology, and business tax ideas.

Following the roundtable meeting, Governor-elect Scott joined co-owner Randy Gilde, on a tour of Delray Plants’ Venus location. Governor-elect Scott saw first-hand many dynamic aspects of a nursery operation including stops at several of the packing houses where workers and a potting machine transplanted small plants from a 10-pot environmentally friendly tray into individual 8-inch pots.

Rick Scott visits with Randy Gilde of Delray Plants Co.

NEWS/CERTIFICATION

Applications will be accepted through February 5 for the upcoming FNGLA Certified Landscape Technician (FCLT) field exam at Pinellas Technical Education Center (pTEC) in St. Petersburg on March 5.

To register for the FCLT exam, and to receive study materials, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA at 800-375-3642. FCLT is a hands-on field exam where applicants demonstrate their skills in landscape installation through the completion of field exams. They include plant identification, irrigation repair, equipment operation, tree installation, and more.

A training class begins January 25 at pTEC – a combination hands-on and classroom instruction directly prepares applicants for success on the FCLT exam. It will take place each Tuesday and Thursday until the exam date.

For more information or to pre-register for the training class, contact Bonnie Desmond at 727-893-2500 x1101 or [email protected] or Greg Charles at [email protected]

FNGLA Links Certification with FFA StudentsPast President Passes AwayFNGLA is saddened by the death of

FNGLA Past President Joe Welker, 93,

of Jacksonville, FL, on December 23. Joe

was FNGLA president in 1971-72 and

inducted into FNGLA’s Hall of Fame in

2002. One of the dreams of his youth

was to be an “international plant

explorer.” Upon his return from the South

Pacific in World War II, Joe founded

Duval Landscape Company which he

operated for over 50 years. Joe is sur-

vived by his three children: John Welker,

Martha “Marty” Welker Clark and

Joseph “Jody” Welker and 7

grandchildren.

When more than 350 students show their horticultural skills at the Florida FFA Career Development Events (CDEs) in Floriculture and Nursery/Landscape, they will also be preparing for FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) exam.

FNGLA has worked with Florida’s Department of Education, industry members and FFA to assure a link among the principles taught and tested for horticulture students – whether on the high school level or for those new to the industry.

FNGLA’s Pinellas Chapter will once again host the FFA CDEs in St. Petersburg on Saturday, February 5, 2011. These events present real-life situations that could be found in the work place, including plant disorders, plant identification, landscape planning and equipment maintenance. They test problem-solving skills and horticultural knowledge.

Be a part of these exciting events. There are many opportunities:• Be a sponsor (sponsorships start at just $100)

• Exhibit at the event (meet students, parents & teachers)• Volunteer to help (proctor exams or lead groups of students)

Help us encourage the best and brightest to become part of our industry by providing for an outstanding CDE experience. For information on FNGLA’s participation in Florida FFA, contact Merry Mott at FNGLA, call 800-375-3642.

Many of the Career Development Events for FFA link directly with FNGLA’s Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP) exam, including Plant ID.
