ntroductionhe University of South Florida’s initiatives regarding the sustainability efforts and its imp

mentation of various forms of energy saving alternatives has earned USF’s reputation as one

he nations leading green universities. The Patel College of Global Sustainability, is USFs leadi

esearch and education center. As part of its efforts to contribute to an energy saving universi

he College has implemented the Student Green Energy Fund. A program that allows studen

ubmit proposals that would benefit the university’s sustainability efforts.

As one of USF’s campuses, USFSP’s vision is to create a completely sustainable campus. Usi

nergy saving methods, USFSP has been able to contribute to cleaner society by offering tran

portation alternatives.

ransportation accounts for one of society’s major contributor in greenhouse gasses. By intr

ucing alternatives to driving one’s own vehicle, USFSP is reducing its carbon footprint by “Goi

Green”. It has created many programs that benefit students, the community and the environme

he implementation of programs such as the Enterprise Car Sharing Program, Bike- A- Bull Bi

So how does USFSP address the issues about the pollution produced by cars and trucks.T

report will explain the sustainability initiatives USF offers in regards to alternative transportat

options. Including the financial benefits of using these resources, and explaining in detail, w

each of the programs offer.

It is a concern that air pollution in the U.S. Is produced by cars and trucks (The U.S. Departm

of Energy) and 9 out of ten people commute by car, with 3/4 driving alone. These figures

alarming, even with the accessibility of public and alternative transportation, the environmen

still seeing the consequences of operating a gasoline operated vehicle. Luckily, through educat

and awareness there has been an increase in people that are using alternative forms of transp

tation. This not only benefits the environment, but there are some cost saving incentives peo

are benefiting by “going green”.

The USFSP s Sustainability Office, is dedicated to the research and implementation of sustaina

resources. The alternative transportation programs offered are effective and beneficial. USF is

the right path towards creating a Green Campus.

What is Green Transportation?reen Transportation involves effectivend efficient ways to utilize transportationlternatives in a healthy and sustainable

way. By using public transportation, ridingicycles, walking and carpooling, theseco-friendly alternatives all help to bringmore sustainable environment.

here are several modes of green trans-ortation, and each of them help reduce

he repercussions conventional transpor-ation has on the environment. Whether

be a human powered vehicle, such as aicycle or a full electric car, both help in

he reduction of carbon emissions. Even

ybrid vehicles which reduce the use ofossil fuels benefit the environment in howhey conserve their use of such fuels.

ther benefits come from more earth friendlyorms of transportation as well. Especially

when walking or the use of bicycles aresed. These forms of transportation arexcellent forms of exercise which contributeo a more healthy lifestyle.

A sustainable campus is one that

improves the environment by using

clean and ecient energy sources,

saving water, recycling, funding

renewable energy projects,

 planting native plant species and

educating the college community.

Office of Sustainability USFSPUSFSP’s Office of Sustainability’s commitment to achieve a sustainable campus has joined USF’s pledgeof going green.. Fortunately, at USF they have found many ways to contribute to reduction of thecarbon footprint, and become part of the green transportation movement. The Office of Sustainabilityis dedicated to the extensive Research and Development in providing green alternatives. Faculty alongwith students have come up with proposals on how to make the campus more sustainable. The avail-ability of the Student Green Energy Fund has empowered students to develop programs that keep the

environment clean. In 2013, Project Investigator, Jon Ellington proposed the purchase of a GMC Hybrid Truck for use by the Waterfront Association. By using the Hybrid truck, there was an annual savings of$4300, and a reduction in CO2 emissions by approximately 6395 pounds per year. The truck would beused to transport equipment and students around the state for school activities.(SOURCE)

The commitment to become a “Net Zero Carbon Footprint” (The Crows Nest) campus, the USFSPSustainability Department has implemented several transportation alternative programs that are costand energy efficient.Students, and faculty have benefited greatly from the alternative transportation programs that areoffered at the USFSP campus. Among the most popular programs are the Enterprise Car Share Program,Bike-A-Bull Share Program, PSTA Universal Pass and the electric vehicle charging stations.

Enterprise’s Car Sharing program started in 2005, and overthe years it has grown to one of the top car-sharing programsin the nation. Enterprise saw the need for short-term rentalsdue to the limited car sharing options available. The conceptof introducing a car-sharing program became an attractivebusiness venture. The enormous growth they have seen from2005 up until current day is attributed through the acquisi-tion of several established car-sharing programs.

The Enterprise Car Sharing program is a membership program. As of today, their membership surpasses 60,000 members. The

reason so many take advantage of the program is because itis simple and efficient. The availability of ready to go trans-portation has been beneficial to many.Enterprise realized that people needed cars for a short periodof time. Be it for running errands, appointments, or for thosewho “just need some time on the open road”.

The need for transportation was apparent in colleges anduniversities; of many of the advantages of having the car

share programs on campus, a main goal wafacilitate easy transportation around campus. A cconcern of many students who did not have their otransportation was getting to class on time. Haveasy accessibility to transportation throughoutcampuses shortened travel time, and relieved stress of arriving late.USF has car-sharing programs in both the Tamand St. Pete Campuses. The program is simple to Enterprise has described the process in 4 easy st

The use of programs such as Enterprise’s ride sharing initiative can greatly impact

our environment. One simple reason is that use of Rideshare would allow up to nine

passengers to ride in one vehicle. That would mean eight less vehicles on the road

and also reduce the amount of parking locations needed for those same vehicles.

Not only would there be a reduction in emissions but with less area needed for

parking it could be used for other earth friendly uses. Estimations by studies done

by Enterprise show that each van pool could eliminate up to 12,500 lbs. of CO2 for

each month used. (Enterprise, 2015) It is clear that the use of ride sharing programs

can clearly help reduce the negative effects on the environment. This includes the

fact that by simply eliminating the amount of vehicles on the road you can reduce

the use of fossil fuels and their harmful effects when released into our environment.Ridesharing along with other green initiatives are good steps toward being more

aware and concerned with the impact we have on our planet.

We ask Catherine what her day is like “It takes me about two hours to get to school from Seminole taking two

n the long run a lot more than that because I don’t have to buy a car yet or pay for gas either.”

What’s next for Catherine? “ Trying out Zimride, I don’t drive, but the thought of ride-sharing is exciting! Maybe

can get to school and work faster”.

1. How often are you forced to park in regular parking becausethe EV parking spot was take?- “Almost never, I don’t think that many students even knowabout it.”

2. What is something else that USFSP could offer in term of greentransportation that would benefit you?-“I think that the school would benefit from offering ElectronicCars for rental on campus. That would promote the use of thecharging stations and electronic vehicles!”

3. Do you use any of the other transportation alternatives oncampus?-“I do not only because I have a reliable car and I live far fromcampus but I think a lot of students are not taking advantageof what the school offers.”

At USFSP, there are “green” or sustainable buildings on campus to encourage their use, which is agreat motive for people to consider transferring to USFSP. On top of the buildings, on USFSP campus’s

Earth Day, the Student Environmental Awareness Society (SEAS) plants about 200 native trees aroundcampus! According to USF, the reason for this is to “promote a sustainable ecological system and alsopreventing erosion.” Several initiatives have been formed and implemented by USFSP to strive to offera more environmentally friendly computing experience and to reduce their own carbon footprint.Examples of practices that are exercised to improve their own environmental responsibility include:

• Battery disposal at local battery recycling centers.• Disposal of our computer parts at local recycling centers.• Automatically powering o idle lab and classroom computers.• Mobile phone, battery and print cartridge recycling.• Promoting, purchasing RoHS compliant low-power computer hardware and peripherals.• Purchasing recycled paper and recycling used paper for all Campus Computing needs,
