3About Ecotourism Kenya Ecotourism Kenya is a private sector association directly serving more than 300 members and reaching out to hundreds more in Kenya and East Africa. Its wide range of programmes enables it to attract membership beyond the mainstream tourism industry.

Since its inception in 1996, the association has been involved in a wide range of activities to promote sustainable tourism. From organising international conferences and training workshops to developing guidelines, codes of conduct, best practices and a green certi cation scheme, Ecotourism Kenya has been working hard to broaden industry understanding of responsible tourism.

Ecotourism Kenya has had many rsts: it was the rst Ecotourism Society in Africa; the rst to develop a voluntary eco-certi cation scheme for hotels/lodges in Africa; and remains among the top ecotourism societies in the world with an af liation to The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) and the Partnership for Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (www.sustainabletourismcriteria.org).

5About the Directory This is the third edition of the Green Directory. This edition demonstrates that it is possible to walk the walk as we have published on eco-friendly paper using an approved process. The journey towards going green begins with a decision. We are glad that you have chosen to use this directory to guide some of your decisions.

Going green implies striving to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. It is about ensuring that the choices one makes have the least negative impacts on the environment and that they represents the most sustainable way of using available resources. Going green includes the decision not to buy or use a product if there is a alternative, reducing the quantity of the product that one uses, re-using what can be reused and recycling.

One of the things that get in the way of many who wish to go green is a lack of information, including not knowing the green products and services that are available at any given time.

The directory is a guide to those looking for green products and services in Kenya and contains additional information on Tanzania.

This directory is an annual publication.

7Products & ServicesCERTIFIED TOURIST ACCOMMODATION PROVIDERS

Ecotourism Kenya runs an Ecorating Scheme, which is a voluntary certi cation programme for tourist accommodation facilities that started in Kenya but now covers the whole of the East African region. The Scheme gives an opportunity for hotels, lodges, camps, bandas and bush homes that apply to be evaluated and recognised for their practical contribution best practices (high quality, excellent or superior practices) to environmental conservation, sustainable resource utilization and socioeconomic investment. The Scheme has three progressive levels namely Bronze, Silver and Gold.

GOLD RATEDGold Ecorating is an indicator that a facility has achieved superior and replicable levels of excellence in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socioeconomic investment.

SILVERRATEDSilver Ecorating demonstrates a move towards excellence; awarded to facilities that show innovation in responsible resource use, environmental conservation and socioeconomic investment.

BRONZERATEDBronze Ecorating is the entry level and demonstrates a facilitys awareness and commitment to environmental conservation, responsible resource use and socioeconomic investment.

COMMUNITY BASED ORGANISATIONS

Many community-based organisations (CBOs) from all over Kenya are members of Ecotourism Kenya. All of them have two things in common: they support sustainable tourism and they have (or plan to have) tourism enterprises. They will therefore be found offering accommodation, traditional performances, safari guiding, boat tours, artefacts, protection and restoration of tourism destinations among other activities.

To support what they do, always ask your tour operator or accommodation provider the actions they have taken to ensure that such groups bene ts from their activities. And in case you are travelling ensure that you visit at least one CBO enterprise in the tourism region you are visiting.
