FROM MRS COOPER Happy new year to our Brisbane Water Learning community. Every year seems to

start with a bang and this year is no different. We welcome some new staff to the senior college Mr Nick Garnet our new HT Support, Mr Simon Madden as HT PDHPE, Mr Anthony Williamson TAS, Mr Rob Brown and Mr Eli Pollard in HSIE and Ms Georgia Townsend in Science. We give them all a warm welcome to our school family and know that they too will love working with our community. We also have two new appointments that will be joining us very soon. Mrs Dominique Wood in HSIE as Legal Studies teacher and her start date is day 1 next term. Ms Molly Walmsley will be joining us in English next week.

Congratulations are in order for our HSC cohort of 2018. We are incredibly proud of

our alumni. Outstanding results are always a combined effort and the result of many factors including a culture of high expectations, quality teaching and learning, dedication and commitment to improving student outcomes and highly effective systems and practices within the school. Band 6 results came from a broad range of courses including Agriculture, Biology, Earth and environment, Music, CAFS, Society and Culture, Mathematics 2 unit, Industrial Technology and Business Studies. I would like to personally thank our staff for their dedication and hard work in 2018 and recognise outstanding efforts individually. We need to acknowledge our students achieved sixteen Band 6s and seventy six Band 5s.

Welcome year 10 students and families. Congratulations are in order for all concerned

as they transfer from the junior to senior campus. It is a time of great change and increased responsibility which can lead to stress and anxiety for some. We have established a “one stop shop” service for students currently called Student Services. This is replicated the tertiary system (TAFE and Uni) where all students can go to ask/request help for anything. Essay support, assignment assistance, emotional and social support. If you are ever worried you can always make contact with the year advisor, HT Welfare or counsellor if you have any concerns about anything, we are here to help.

It has been a delight to see year 11 in their new senior uniforms and spring in their

step as they begin the journey of stage 6. I have had the pleasure of seeing a great many of them as they altered their patterns before the final changes to be made date of 14.2.2019. Year 11 assessment booklets have bene distributed and explained at a special assembly. An electronic pdf copy will be available on our website for future reference also and have been emailed to student’s school emails. Year 12 received their assessment booklets last year and year 10 will receive theirs by the end of this week. For year 10 families the assessment booklet begins the transition to HSC. The booklet replaces the one page assessment sheet you may be used to seeing from the junior campus. We will also be holding a Year 10 parent information evening on 5

th March in our school library. We hope you can make it.

Looking forward to seeing you over the term at our many

community events. Rebecca Cooper

DEPUTIES REPORT

Welcome back to the 2019 academic school year. We hope you have all had a happy and relaxing holiday period. Throughout the first week, students were excited and happy to be back to see their friends and teachers, even if some were a little nervous to be starting back. We have also welcomed numerous new students to our wonderful school. On Wednesday morning we welcomed 293 Year 10 students. This is exciting for our school and allows for many opportunities for each and every student as our school grows to its full potential.

All staff are very determined to continue to build on the considerable successes that we achieved in 2018. The HSC results and the number of students gaining places at University, TAFE, Traineeship/Apprenticeships and full-time employment was the highest seen for more than 6 years. We encourage all students to make the most of all the opportunities within our school.

Thank you to parents and students for ensuring all were well presented in school uniform and adhering to School Policy. Your ongoing assistance in ensuring that your young adult wears the uniform with pride and is properly groomed is expected and appreciated. We have asked staff to take a close look next week to ensure that all students are meeting expectations and we are happy to assist any family if required.

Finally just a few very important reminders and focus areas:

Students riding bikes MUST wear a helmet.

When picking up students please be conscious of the Bus Parking Zones and

40km/h speed limits.

As we continue to strive to provide a relevant and contemporary education for our

students, it is vital we work together to teach and model for our children safe and

responsible use of technology and the internet.

Dates for your calendar:

Monday 4 March 2019 & Thursday 7 March – Year 10 History / Geography Excursion

Tuesday 19 March – Years 10, 11 & 12 Parent

Teacher Night – 4pm to 8pm

We look forward to working closely with you for the remainder of the year.

COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

What’s that you may ask, it is a little application

that sits on your phone and gives you instant

access to our school information when you click on

it, 24/7. The app gives parents the ability to

instantly access newsletters without going to the

website, or to send in a sick note while you stand

outside the school because you forgot to write a

paper note! We will be sharing many of the other

features with you over the coming weeks, but for

now download it to your smartphone by going to

either the Apple App Store or Android Google Play

Market and search for Brisbane Water Secondary

Once you have found it press install or download.

Dear Parent and Carers The College continues to make improvements in literacy, numeracy and the Higher School Certificate results. Without going into the fine details, I know that as parents, what you would like to hear is, that we are doing the best for your child’s education. I can confidently say that we are. Schools are very complex and as we move into the year 2019, there is a continued shift from teaching a group of students to teaching the individual child. The challenge for every teacher is to design lessons and learning experiences that meet the individual needs of every child in their class. There is a new mantra in education, Every Student Matters. Every student has always mattered but, now we are making conscience strategic changes to the way we go about educating your child. Two initiatives that the College is reviewing this year are, Boys Education plus Gifted and Talented Education. This will include a whole school review of school policy and procedures resulting in the implementation of teaching strategies for improving the outcomes of students. There is a clear intention to involve parents in this journey. So, I will be running the Parent Collaborative Groups again this year. The parent collaborative group will meet once per term. I will be sending out a notice through social media and School Bytes, to gather parent interest to join the collaborative group. If you think that is you, then all you need to do is respond to the notice to join and I will get back to you. The College will continue to work with the Primary Schools in the areas of literacy and numeracy to ensure that there is a continuum of learning from kindergarten to year 12. The Cultural Continuum for all Aboriginal students in the Brisbane Water Learning Community, will continue this year under the guidance of the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.

HSIE ACADEMY LAUNCHED After the HSC results came out in December last year, Woy Woy Campus’ HSIE Faculty launched what we are calling the “HSIE Academy”. This is in recognition and celebration of HSC results for our Year 12 students who have achieved excellent HSC results in HSIE courses. On the noticeboard outside the HSIE staffroom upstairs in J Block you can now see year-by-year lists of Woy Woy HSIE students who finished in the top three in their course or achieved a Band 6 HSC mark (90+) in their course. The HSIE Academy includes stu-dents from every Year 12 right from the start of the College in 2002 through to our most recent HSC cohort in 2018, and it will be updated annually. There is also the very pres-tigious “HSIE All Stars” list, which recognises students who have achieved high HSC marks in two or more HSIE courses or else one very high HSC mark (95+) in a HSIE course. Do you know someone whose name will be already on this HSC honour roll for HSIE students? Come and have a look at our Academy noticeboard to find their name! Per-haps your name will be inscribed on our list in the future. Maybe even on the “HSIE All Stars” list! All it takes is a passion for HSIE subjects, which includes Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History, Business Studies, Economics, Geography, History Extension, Legal Studies, Modern History, Society and Culture, and Studies of Religion. Passion, and of course some hard work during your HSC years. The inaugural HSIE Academy lists were organised by Mr Chris Wright and Mr Ben Nicol. The original inspiration for the idea came from former teaching colleague Mr Paul Salm-on, who thought the HSIE Academy was a great name for the many students who love our HSIE subjects and our HSIE Faculty!

ENGLISH UPDATE All English classes have started well this year in inspiring work spaces and engagement in quality teaching programs. Year 10 are hitting the ground running with a novel study that will encourage them to focus on their own identity and how it is shaped by the texts they read. By developing their understanding of how language and form shape meaning and influence a reader’s response, students will gain a better understanding of themselves and their world. After a year of change to the Stage 6 English syllabuses in 2018, teachers have reflected on and adapted the Year 11 teaching programs to ensure that our students are engaging in innovative and accessible teaching and learning activities. All students are now well into the Common Module, Reading to Write: Transition into Senior English; a module that both invites them to read a range of quality short texts and encourages them to compose a range of quality texts for their own enjoyment. Year 12 are beginning their second term of the HSC course with Advanced, Standard and Studies students exploring a variety of texts that include Keats and Eckermann poetry, and stories from Alice Pung’s ‘Growing Up Asian in Australia’. The Extension students are also well underway and busy shaping their Major Works into thought-provoking creative pieces.

It has been a great start to the year. Year 12 Mathematics Advanced have been working on calculating the derivative of a function and graphing, while Mathematics Standard 2 has been learning about networks. Networks is a brand new topic in the Mathematics Standard syllabus with lots of real world practical applications including the cityrail train line network map as shown. Year 11 have started the year with a mature and positive attitude, ready and keen to learn. They are studying algebra with a focus on formulae and equations. Year 10 have been studying Trigonometry and last week 10MA2 ventured into the playground to utilise their knowledge to calculate the height of tall items such as the flagpole.

The start of the year is a great time to

get organised and stock up on

equipment supplies. A reminder that if

your child is studying any level of

Mathematics a calculator is an essential

tool. We recommend the CASIO fx82au

which is around $25 in the current back

to school sales but any scientific

calculator would also be suitable.

CAPA NEWS The CAPA faculty has launched in 2019 with all courses represented. Year Ten, in particular, has embraced the creative subjects with courses in Drama, Visual Arts, Dance, Photography and Music all running. In addition, on the new elective line we have interest electives: Music Mix and Media, Lights Camera Action and Photography. Stage six senior courses are also underway in Drama, Visual Arts, Music, Visual Design and Photography. Visual Arts and Music both have excursions in Week 3 with Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts off to Art Express and Music to see the Band 6 performances. The big event this year in Term 2 is the college musical 'Grease'. Casting has taken place and rehearsals are underway. See Ms Garner's report elsewhere in this bulletin. Could I remind parents that all electives have a course cost that covers materials and new equipment purchases. This can be paid in instalments to the front office. Any financial hardship will be covered by the Principal. Applications must be in writing on the relevant form.

All the best for 2019 - John Lynch. Head Teacher CAPA

FROM THE OFFICE

IMPORTANT – ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL It is of extreme importance that all absences be explained in writing within 14 days of the date of the absence. After that period of time, all absences will become unjustified and will no longer be able to be amended to “explained”. As a result, you may notice several unexplained absences on this school report. The School Attendance Policy – Student Attendance in Government Schools Procedures written by the Student Welfare Directorate 2010 states: “Parents are responsible for: Explaining the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school” and as such we are unable to change records after 14 days beyond the absence. We appreciate your understanding and assistance in this matter. We can accept phone calls, faxes and emails to explain absences. Absences may also be reconciled through the BWSC App. Contact numbers are stated below. Notes for 1 day’s absence are usually put in rolls to be collected by students in Roll Call. If these are not collected they will be posted home, but the time to reply with an explanation will be greatly shortened. Notes for more than one day’s absence will be sent in the mail. PHONE: 4341 1600 FAX: 43443263 EMAIL: [email protected]

Parents/Guardians are reminded to please bring I.D when collecting students from front office.

OUR NEW BABY GRAND ! The biggest thank you goes to Bill Jackson- Chief executive officer Ettalong Diggers

for his extremely generous donation of a beautiful baby grand piano. Our staff and stu-dents were overwhelmed from such a gift. Most have never played a grand piano be-fore. Not only was this a material gift to our classroom, it was a gift to our students re-minding them of the power of human goodwill, compassion and humanity. Such a kind gesture will not be forgotten and is still the topic of discussion in our Music room this

year. You have our biggest gratitude. Kind regards, Kristy Garner and the Music students.

YEAR 12 FOOD & BEVERAGE

Year 12 Food and Beverage completing their assessment task with Mrs

Abigail and Billy. The steak sandwiches and smoothies were

delicious.
