GENERAL

University and College Hardship Funds

Provide assistance to undergraduate and postgraduate students in financial difficulty, aiming to

relieve financial hardship that might impact on a student’s participation in higher education. Contact

the student services department at your university or college.

Campden Charities

Grants to obtain employment, with funds for course fees, travel, childcare and equipment and

support for students at university. Applicant needs to have lived continuously in Kensington for at

least two years, be a British or European citizen or have indefinite leave to remain, be living in

rented accommodation and be in receipt of benefits or in low paid work.

Gilchrist Educational Trust

Students who have made proper provision to fund a degree or higher education course but find

themselves facing unexpected financial difficulties, normally in the last year of the course. Also those

who are required, as part of a degree course, to spend a short period studying abroad. Full-time

students at a British University are eligible.

Humanitarian Trust

British citizens and overseas students under 30 years old on a recognised course of study in the UK and who hold a basic grant for the course. Small grants and top-up fees are available to graduates and postgraduates and are awarded for 'academic subjects only'.

The Individual Learning Account (ILA) Scotland provides funding towards the cost of learning

something new. Applicants must be ordinarily resident in Scotland, be a UK citizen or EEA national

who has utilised their “right of residence” or have “settled within the UK”. Not eligible, if person holds

a UK degree or postgraduate qualification or overseas equivalent and if person is in Scotland on a

temporary student or work visa.

National Eisteddfod of Wales

Annual scholarship to the most promising candidate to enable them to further their understanding of creative architecture and design. Open to those under 25 and either are born in Wales, have Welsh parents, have lived or worked in Wales for three years or are able to speak or write the Welsh language.

Open Society Foundation Fellowship

Provides funding for contemporary and unique research ranging from problems that have not previously been recognised, developing new policy ideas to address familiar problems or offer a new advocacy strategy. Eligible applicants should possess a deep understanding of their chosen subject and a track record of professional accomplishment. Proficiency in spoken English is required. It does not provide funding for degree or non-degree studying at an academic institution.

Professional Classes Aid Council (PCAC)

Provides grants to professionals below the UK poverty line, who have a strong educational background

(degree level or equivalent) or who are part of a profession that requires these academic

qualifications. Grants are available in the categories college/university students, general assistance,

specific needs and children’s education. Depending on the grant, different eligibility criteria apply.

Ruth Hayman Trust

Small grants awarded to support the education and training of adults resident in the UK who speak a language other than English as their first language. Funds not available for post-graduate higher education unless it leads directly to employment (e.g. PGCE, and never for PhDs).

Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

Academic research grants, fellowships and studentships as well as grants for industrial collaborations,

science communicators and others. Included are grants for university-based research and post-

graduate training. Available to UK Citizens and all nationalities depending on the scheme and other

specified criteria.

Sir Richard Stapley Education Trust

Grants are for students studying for courses in medicine or veterinary sciences taken as a second

degree and funding for postgraduate students from all fields of study. Open to residents in the UK at

time of application and during the course of study and aged over 24 on 1st October of proposed year

of study.

Sir Walter St John’s Educational Charity

Grants are awarded to cover expenditure necessary for attendance on the course, such as registration

fees, travel, books or equipment. Applicants for student grants must be under the age of 25 and must

have been permanently resident in Wandsworth or Lambeth for at least six months.

Sir Halley Stewart Trust

Trust supports medical, social and educational, and religious projects, mainly in the UK. Research

topics should fall under one of the Trust’s current priority areas. The Trust does not fund individuals

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Aga Khan Foundation, International Scholarship Programme

Priority is given to MA programmes but PhD students also considered. Preference to students under 30 years of age. Applications accepted from nationals of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above developing countries. Arab Student Aid International

Provides interest-free loans to students wishing to undertake graduate and postgraduate level.

Applicants must be Arab citizens who intend to return to their home region upon completing their

course, and must already be enrolled on a Master’s or PhD programme.

Altajir Trust

Scholarships for graduates and in some cases undergraduates from Arab countries to study at British

universities. Should normally be of Arab nationality, be resident in an Arab country and not hold

Asfari Foundation

Postgraduate Master’s scholarships at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Edinburgh

for Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese nationals up to the age of 40 who reside in one of those three

countries or recently moved elsewhere in the region. Applicants must be committed to returning to

Two or three scholarships to graduates of Palestinian universities to study for a 1-year taught Master’s degree at Durham University. Chevening Scholarships

Funding providing by UK government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office to foreign-based outstanding established or emerging leaders to pursue one-year Master’s degrees in any subject at any of the UK’s leading universities. Gates Cambridge Scholarship (University of Cambridge)

Funding to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.). Citizens from outside the UK may apply. Those classed as “home” students for purpose of fees are not eligible. The application deadline for 2015/16 has now closed.

Offers grants to South Sudanese and Sudanese students studying for a postgraduate course in the

UK, who intend to return to South Sudan or Sudan at the end of their studies. Grants may be given

towards the cost of course fees, and/or food and accommodation, and occasionally for other

academic expenses, such as books. Priority is given to students who have already received an offer

of a place on a postgraduate course in the UK. The Trust may also give financial assistance to South

Sudanese and Sudanese nationals towards the costs of shorter training programmes, projects and

courses in the UK.

Oxford Brookes University Said Foundation Scholarships

The scholarship covers travel expenses, full fees and living expenses for students from Jordan,

Oxford University Said Foundation Scholarships

Provides scholarships to those of Jordanian, Lebanese, Syrian of Palestinian background. Covers 100% of university fees, provides a £14,057 living costs grant and flights to and from home at the beginning and end of the course. Awards are made for the full duration of the fee liability for the agreed course.

Great Britain-China Educational Trust

Chinese student awards for Chinese students (from the PRC including Hong Kong) studying for a PhD

in any subject at a UK university. Students must have started their third year before they are eligible

to submit their application. Han Suyin Awards specifically for those Chinese (PRC) candidates who

hold a recognised medical degree, or a degree in the field of science and technology with some work

experience at the relevant level. Environmental topics, and in particular forestry and coastal studies,

will be given preference.

Hani Qaddumi Foundation

Full and partial Master’s Scholarships for Palestinian and Jordanian students residing in Palestine and

under 30 years of age at the time of application at UK, US and Canadian universities in a variety of

disciplines. Successful applicants must sign a binding contract to return to Palestine upon completion

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation

The Foundation offers research grants and dissertation fellowships. Highest priority is given to

proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase

the understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression in the

modern world. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate

attention and support from other funding sources. Applicants may be citizens of any country and

studying at college or university in any country. The grant may not be used to support research

Fellowship Competition for Palestinian Scholars for doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowships

Provides 100 scholarships per year of up to £5,000 to outstanding students who wish to act as

Assistance available to refugees, the homeless, widows, orphans and those who have no other forms

The Prince’s Trust

Awards are aimed at disadvantaged young people aged between 14 and 25 years to enable them to

develop skills and confidence to get into education, training or employment. Refugees, asylum

seekers and other young people aged between 14-25 years are eligible in London and the South East

area and Scotland. Funding can cover things such as equipment/tools for a qualification, course fees,

interview clothes, licence fees, childcare costs for single parents, and transport to a new job until

first pay cheque.

Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund

Grants aimed at individuals who have suffered persecution for their conscientiously-held beliefs that

come within the organisation’s definition of a prisoner of conscience. Two types of grant are

available: Relief and Rehabilitation Grants (including Family Reunion Grants), and Bursary Grants for

postgraduate study.

Educational funding in the form of grants to young asylum seekers and refugees where alternative

The Foundation primarily helps first degree students with grants that are intended to be supplementary where the majority of funding is obtained elsewhere. United Westminster Almshouses Foundation

Annual bursaries to students who reside in Westminster and who wish to pursue courses of study or

training. Open to refugees and UK citizens wishing to undertake undergraduate degrees, training,

apprenticeships, re-training, short courses that are essential to employment, and in some cases,

post-graduate degrees.

Walcot Foundation

Funding includes costs for a first degree or a first vocational (work related) qualification, helping those

out of work take a further education or vocational training course that has a strong likelihood of

leading to work, and expenses associated with gaining work experience. Must be living in Lambeth for

at least one year, on low income and under the age of 30. Refugees, asylum seekers and others are

eligible with additional specified criteria.

The Windle Trust International

Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate study in Africa and the UK. Provides postgraduate

scholarship opportunities in UK universities to refugees, and people who have been internally

displaced or otherwise affected by conflict. Applicants should be from the countries of East, Central

or the Horn of Africa and be resident in Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Egypt or Ethiopia. Trust also provides

an undergraduate scholarship programme for refugees studying at local universities in Sudan.

Undergraduate scholarship applicants should usually be under 30 years old.

The University of Sussex

A new scholarship to support 50 Syrian refugees to prepare for university study has been established

by the University of Sussex. Each scholarship is worth up to £10,000 per student and will cover the

full course tuition fees together with £100 per week contribution towards living costs. The Sussex

Refugee Scholarship will enable Syrians to take an intensive English language course in preparation

for university study. The scholarship will be open to Syrian nationals aged 18 to 25 who are - or who

will be - in the UK under the Government's Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme ('SVPRS').

University of East London (UEL)

UEL are offering full-time masters scholarships, consisting of a full tuition fee waiver to eligible Syrian

nationals in areas including engineering, psychology, law and refugee studies. Applicants must have

humanitarian protection status afforded by the UK government/hold refugee status on or after 1

January 2015. Applicants should hold the equivalent of a UK 2:2 undergraduate degree must meet

compliance/English language requirements.

The University of York

The University of York is offering a package of initiatives worth up to £500,000, over three years, to

help refugees who are escaping the worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria, North Africa and the

Middle East. The package includes the introduction of scholarships for refugee students; offering

scholar rescue status to refugee academics; and developing a series of public events in partnership

with York Minster and other city of York partners to raise awareness of the complex

issues underlying the current refugee crisis.

The University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh will offer up to 3 postgraduate scholarships for students from Syria

studying a one-year Master’s degree programme for the 2016/2017 session. Each scholarship covers

the full tuition fee as well as a stipend of £14,000 and is tenable for one academic year.The

scholarships will be awarded to students of Syrian nationality who hold the humanitarian

protection/refugee status as granted by the UK government. Applications from Syrian students still

living in Syria as well as those who have been forced to flee Syria and have sought refuge in the

surrounding region are also welcome. Applicants should already have been offered a place on a full-

Goldsmiths, University of London

Goldsmiths are offering £140,000 towards a total of six new scholarships for refugees and asylum

the full-time teaching and accommodation fees will be waived. Students will also receive maintenance

bursaries of up to £10,000 a year – marking a significant increase in Goldsmith’s funding for those
