The Benefits of Medicine

Medicine can fight illnesses and relieve symptoms.

Forexample,antibiotics (an-ty-by-AH-tiks) areatypeofmedicinethatkidssometimestaketokillgermslikestreptococcalbacteriathatcausestrepthroat.

Somemedicineshelpsymptoms—like aches and pains and runny noses—goaway.

Some medicines can help prevent you from getting sick.

Vaccines (vak-SEENS)aremedicinesthathelppeoplefromgettingsickinthefirstplace.Usuallytheyaregivenasashotandcanhelppeoplefromcatchingillnesseslikechickenpox,measles,mumpsortheflu.

n It’simportanttoread the labelandalwaysfollowthedirectionsandsafetyinformationbefore taking an OTC medicine—especiallybecausemanyOTCdrugsaretakenwithoutseeingadoctor.
