Mardi Gras 2017

Important Announcement

It is with deep regret that the Mardi Gras Committee and Father John must announce that Mardi Gras 2017 will be postponed until 2018. Several important factors related to the venue for Mardi Gras contributed to this decision.

First, due to circumstances beyond our control, our normal venue could not be secured with confidence that it would be available on the day of the event. A secondary location was identified; however, due to the size of the facility, attendance would have been reduced by half.

Second, the committee found that the fixed costs of the event, such as food and music, could not be reduced in accordance with the reduced ticket sales. This situation would have a major impact on Mardi Gras’ ability to support effectively the wonderful community work that we have in previous years.

Finally, the committee had safety concerns related to the limited parking available at the proposed facility. The combined effect of each of these factors weighed heavily in our decision that we could not use the proposed second location.

We appreciate your support of Mardi Gras in the past and your understanding of this difficult decision. We look forward to your joining us next year. Our plans to host the event in 2018, however, will require the commitment of more volunteers from the Good Shepherd community. Please consider lending your time and talent to this important event. We will need to have our volunteers on board by no later than July 1, 2017. If you are interested, contact the church office. Thank you!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a “carol” anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebrations. “Carol” comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren’t for church, since the language of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the common language. Their characteristic sound comes from medieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Reformation, carols didn’t make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn’t admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn’t make laws against them.

We are told that the beloved carol “Silent Night” comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church’s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in 1818. The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the “Silent Night Memorial Chapel” at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

AN ADVENT PRAYER

May the God of peace make us completely holy. May God keep us blameless in spirit, soul and body for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Forever faithful is the One who calls us—God our Father! Expectant, let us live in joyful hope for the revelation of the glory of our God and Savior, Christ Jesus! To him be glory forever! Come, Lord Jesus! Your grace be with us all. —From Come, Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright 1976, 1981, Lucien Deiss. Published by World Library Publications. p. 127

Emmanuel

On this last Sunday before Christmas, we see that Jesus’ birth is the fulfillment of the promise of Emmanuel, “God is with

us” (Matthew 1:23). The Gospel refers to the first reading from Isaiah. There we see the king of Judah, Ahaz, under attack by the kings of Aram and Israel. He wants to ask the Assyrians for help instead of relying on God. He is afraid to admit his lack of faith. So the weakness of Ahaz gives us the wonderful prophecy of the birth of Jesus. In the Gospel, Joseph also does not understand how Mary came to be pregnant. But unlike Ahaz, Joseph did have faith in God and the message of the angel. He took Mary as his wife and helped her through her pregnancy and in raising Jesus afterwards. So now we have to choose whom to rely on. Do I act like Ahaz, relying on worldly powers, or like Joseph, who trusted the Lord? If I look at my actions and priorities, I might be more like Ahaz than I want to admit. How much time do I spend watching television (especially now that it’s in HD) compared to time in prayer? How much time do I spend reading the scriptures compared to the newspaper or magazines? If I really believe that “God is with us,” which is what Christmas is all about, how much of God can people see in my actions? Maybe if we kept in mind that promise that God is with us—in the baptism we received and the sacraments of the Church, and in the love of our spouse or parents—we could see how close God really is, and let others see in our actions that Jesus is Emmanuel.
