Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) A reminder: Father Dominic is on vacation in Uganda through Feb. 18. Keep in mind that we will be a bit shorthanded during this period. While he is away, we are scheduling only one Mass on weekday mornings. (2) Several years ago, I asked Deacon Kevin Jacques to undergo training for Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest (SCAP), in case we were ever to face the circumstance when a priest could not be available for a

scheduled weekend Mass. When we were informed on Saturday morning, Nov. 3, 2018, that a previously scheduled priest did not feel well enough to do the 4pm Saturday and 8:30am Sunday Masses at Most Holy Trinity Church, we made unsuccessful efforts to find another priest. At 1 pm, I made the decision to use the SCAP ritual under the emergency circumstances Bishop Deeley previously had approved. We made sure we had enough consecrated hosts on hand by gathering them from other tabernacles in the parish so that we could appropriately celebrate SCAP at MHT. I later informed the bishop about my decision and he assured me it was an appropriate one. To be clear, the American bishops have approved this ritual; while it is not a Mass, there is a Liturgy of the Word. Holy Communion may be distributed and participation in the service fulfills the Sunday obligation. In the recent past, it was used regularly in some Maine clusters but I don’t think that is the case now. This is to inform you that as I write this on Jan. 17, we currently lack a priest to do the 9am Mass at St. Philip and the 11am Mass at St. Joseph on Feb. 16. If we cannot find a priest to help us, Deacon Kevin is prepared to lead SCAP at those times and locations. I am announcing this now in case some of you would prefer to attend Mass in one of our other locations on that day. I will update you as we approach the Sunday in question. Our bishop and priests foresee more frequent cele-brations of SCAP in Maine in the near future, even on a regular basis. (3) Our Shepherds of Hope parish capital campaign continues to grow weekly. Twenty-five weeks after Participation Weekend on July 28, 2019, we have received 703 gifts and pledges amounting to $1,405,051 as of Jan. 21, or some 70% of our $2,000,000 goal. I am happy to report once again that pledges and gifts have been given every week since the start of this 5-year campaign. As a reminder, please complete only one pledge card, even if you happen to give more than originally planned. Also, clearly distinguish any donation to the campaign separately from other donations to the parish, perhaps by writing SOH (for Shepherds of Hope) and simply noting your campaign ID or even your envelope number on your envelope or check memo line. (4) Next weekend, the Church observes the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Celebrated 40 days after Christmas, Feb. 2 falls on a Sunday this year. It includes a blessing of candles because Simeon proclaims the 40-day-old Jesus a light to the nations. At the Masses on that day, we will bless candles that we will use throughout the year in our churches. Parishioners are invited to bring from their homes any candles that they wish to be blessed for devotional purposes. (5) Improvements at St. Margaret: Two weeks ago, an electrician refurbished the electrical sub panel in the sacristy at St. Margaret’s Church to bring it closer to current code. This involved upgrading the circuit breakers, installing new SWD breakers and common trip breakers. They also spent time cleaning up the wiring and connections to make it neat and workmen-like. There is still more work that needs to be done; this doesn’t present an immediate need but will be scheduled in the near future. That next step to bring the panel to code, is to change the original 3 wire 100 amp cable to a 4 wire cable, to properly separate the neutral and ground wires. Also, at the suggestion of a parishioner, we have ordered window inserts for the stained-glass windows above the sanctuary space in order to reduce the cold from coming through. Those may have been installed by the time you read this. (6) Repeating from two weeks ago: The bishop has set into place seasonal protocols intended to insure the good health of everyone during this flu and cold season. To sum-marize: parishioners who are sick with any type of cold or flu-like symptoms should stay home; all ministers should make liberal use of anti-bacterial sanitizers; shaking hands by hospitality ministers and by all is discouraged during the Our Father and the Sign of Peace; the faithful are urged but not required to receive the Eucharist on the hand rather than on the tongue; distribution of the Precious Blood is suspended. (7) Thank You of the Week: To parish seamstresses who, from time to time, mend parish vestments and other items used during the liturgy. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Volume 2 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: A friend dropped in to visit a popular band conductor and found him going through a large pile of letters. Many were from feminine admirers, requesting locks of his hair. His friend, learning of the many requests, asked, “Goodness, at this rate, you’ll be bald-headed.” “Not I,” confidently replied the conductor, “but my dog will.”

PARISH LITURGIES

Good Shepherd Parish Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2020

We try to list the name of the priest who will cele-brate every scheduled weekend Mass. However, this schedule may be changed without notice.

SHEPHERDS OF HOPE PLEDGES: For parishioners that have not yet made a pledge, we need your HELP! Please pray about taking that step. There should still be cards at each church or the parish office, so fill one out or take it home for prayerful consideration. Bring the pledge to

the office/mail to: Good Shepherd Parish, 271 Main St, Saco. NOTE: Any Checks/Cash can be dropped in the collection basket, in-side a blank envelope, AND must have a name & ID number in order to receive credit on a pledge. Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish with “Shepherds Of Hope” in the memo line.

Current totals: 703 household gifts * $1,405,051 * 70% of goal

We have created a live link with the Shepherds of Hope logo on the Homepage of our website (https://goodshepherdparish.us/). Just click the logo and it will take you to where you need to be to get started. If you need assistance, call Amy Loring at the parish office: 282-3321x105. Please be aware that with the convenience comes a price. WESHARE does charge a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account - the fee is a flat 10 cents per transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50 donation will have a charge of 50 cents, plus 10 cents, for a total fee of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $49.40.

* Credit Card / Debit Card Transactions - the fee is 3.25%, calculated as follows:

Using the same $50 donation example as above, the 3.25% transaction fee will amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the Credit/Debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we do prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding on your source of payment. Thank you for your generosity.

SHEPHERDS of HOPE PLEDGE PAYMENTS: Please note that if you intend on using ACH or your Credit Card for payment and/or installments on your Shepherds of Hope pledge, you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service: WESHARE. Please do not include your bank account information or credit card number on the pledge card. Simply go to the parish website to sign up and make a payment or set up recurring payments. If you do decide to use WESHARE please mark that on your pledge card so we handle the pledge properly. Thanks so much.

time to give thanks and celebrate the many who have been helped and ministered at St. Andre Home. The Good Shepherd Sisters would love

to have your support whether it’s with decorations, identifying and meeting with sponsors, support the night of the event and more. FMI,

Students Take Bishop ‘Around the World’

Bishop Robert P. Deeley took a world tour planned and created by the students of St. James School. Upon arrival, Bishop Deeley was issued a “passport,” which, by the end of the day, was filled with stamps as each classroom had been transformed into a different country as part of a world tour for the bishop and his traveling party: Monsignor Rene Mathieu, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in Saco; Fr. Brad Morin, parochial vicar of the parish; Suzanne Lafreniere, public policy director for the diocese; Marianne Pelletier, superintendent of Maine Catholic Schools; and Nancy Naimey, principal of St. James. Observing different traditions from around the world and connecting them with their fellow classmates and friends struck a powerful chord in St. James students. “I don’t know your name. We speak different languages,” sang the student body in unison during a prayer service with the bishop. “We may not be the same, but I reach out my hands to you.”

Good Shepherd Parish Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 26, 2020

PARISH DONATIONS & CHARITABLE DEDUCTIONS:

Please be aware that the parish office can only track your offertory donations in our Parish Database when you use your Offertory Envelopes. All donations received through your envelopes are recorded to your account. We are happy to provide you with a donation record if requested. Due to staff medical leave, we will begin processing requests this year in February, and prefer handling these via email in order to reduce adminis-trative costs to the parish. Requests can be made as follows:

• Visit our website to fill out the request form for your recorded dona-tion amount: www.goodshepherdparish.us/annual-donation-report (most preferred way) or

• Email [email protected] with 2019 GSP Contribution Statement in the subject line. Leave your name, Envelope Number, address, email & phone number or

• Call the parish office at 207-282-3321 x105, leaving the same info noted above.

WESHARE donors through our online giving service, you are able to obtain your record of giving / donations directly from your WESHARE account. Please avail yourselves to it. The information you need is available immediately!

Due to the large number of requests received we ask that you please be patient. We will do our very best to respond as quickly as possible.

Be advised: All Souls donations are non-deductible since a Mass is given for those intentions.

Tax law requires that we acknowledge receipt of any single donation of $250 or more with a letter, which is standard procedure. However, smaller amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are scanned and deposited to the bank. You must then rely on your canceled check and bank statements, as record for your donation. If you would like to receive Envelopes, please contact [email protected].

THANK YOU ALL in advance for your cooperation and generosity throughout the year!
