Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) This weekend, as we celebrate Palm Sunday of the Passion of the

Lord, we are making use of the short form of the entrance and of the

Liturgy of the Word, omitting the 1st reading, responsorial psalm, and 2nd

reading. We are using these optional forms in consideration of our many

elderly parishioners, and because of parking problems when multiple

Masses are scheduled at the same locations. (2) I urge all parishioners to

participate as fully as possible in the liturgies of Holy Week, especially those of the

Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil). In observing these

holy days, we join with believers all over the world who celebrate God’s merciful love

as revealed in the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During the week

ahead, raise up in prayer those who are beginning their last days of preparation for the

sacraments of initiation they will receive on the Easter Vigil. Those of us who have had

close contact with them can see wonderful things happening in their lives and how the

Lord continues to tug at the hearts of people in our community in often surprising

ways! (3) As we have done for several years, a single parish-wide celebration of the

Holy Thursday and Good Friday ceremonies (March 24-25) will begin at 7:00 pm at

St. Joseph Church. The Easter Vigil will begin Saturday, March 26, at 7:30 pm, which

is the earliest we can begin this nighttime ceremony in Maine this year. Again this year,

the Easter Vigil will be celebrated in two locations. At St. Joseph Church, it will in-

clude those receiving Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. At Most Holy

Trinity Church, these sacraments of initiation will not be included, permitting a briefer

ceremony for those so inclined. No other Masses are permitted that evening. On Easter

Sunday, in addition to the usual schedule, we are adding a 9:30 am Mass at St. Joseph

and an 11:00 am Mass at St. Philip. (4) FORMED is coming to Good Shepherd Parish

on Easter weekend as a free gift for parishioners! Formed is the Catholic Faith on-

demand, something like a Catholic Netflix. Parishioners will have access to the best

Catholic teaching videos, books, movies, and audio talks—all the Catholicism videos,

the Symbolon series, Fr. Gaitley programs, the Lectio series and more. Kicking off this

program will be a brand new offer coming out in two weeks: The Second Greatest Story

Ever Told. Check out the promo video on the homepage of our website at

www.GoodShepherdParish.us. With FORMED, you will be able to view programs at

home, in small private groups, or in a large group. On Easter weekend, the Parish Code

will be given to all parishioners at all Masses. This code will allow you to gain free

access to all its programing. (5) Jubilee Year of Mercy (March) - Feed the Hungry -

This week’s suggestion: Do you know someone who is spiritually hungry? Keep an eye

out for faith-sharing groups or faith formation opportunities in your parish and invite

him or her to accompany you to one. (6) A reminder about our online giving system:

Good Shepherd Parish has an online giving system called WeShare. For more infor-

mation and to set up your account, go to www.GoodShepherdParish.us and then click

Online Giving. You can make a one-time or recurring donation using your credit card,

checking or savings account. I myself use this method of contributing to the parish.

(7) Thank You of the Week: To those who prepared, served and enjoyed the Lenten

haddock suppers that so greatly benefit St. James School. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne: One day Tommy asked his grandpa, who was in his nineties: “Grandpa, what would you like people to say about you a hundred years from now?” With a twinkle in his eye grandpa answered: “I’d like to have them say, ‘He looks good for his age.’”

HOLY WEEK 2016 The Sacred Triduum

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of Holy Week: Masses will be celebrated at the usual times and locations. Funeral Masses are not permitted on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. However, the funeral liturgy outside of Mass may be used on those days and celebrated in church.

Holy Communion for the Sick: On Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Holy Communion may be given to the faithful who attend the liturgies on those days, and may be brought to the sick after the evening liturgies. Before the Easter Vigil Masses on Holy Saturday, Communion may be given only to the dying.

Holy Thursday: Sacred oils blessed by Bishop Robert Deeley at Tuesday’s Cathedral Chrism Mass will be publicly received in the parish during the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 pm. Afterwards, the Eucharist will be in repose downstairs in Ste. Anne’s Chapel where adoration will continue until 10:00 pm when a Tenebrae service will be led by parishioners.

Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence from meat. All Catholics aged 14 and older are bound by the law of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and older until their 59th birthday are bound by the law of fast. At 3:00 pm, the Way of the Cross will be celebrated at St. Joseph (French), and at Most Holy Trinity, St. Margaret & St. Philip (English). The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion will be at St. Joseph Church at 7:00 pm, including the Liturgy of the Word, the Adoration of the Holy Cross, and Holy Communion.

Holy Saturday: Several priests will be available 3:00 - 4:00 pm (& longer if necessary) at St. Joseph Church for individual confessions on Holy Saturday afternoon. There are no 4:00/4:30 pm Masses on this day.

The Easter Vigil is the only Mass permitted on the evening before Easter Sunday; it may be celebrated only after nightfall -- 7:30 pm this year. The cele-bration at St. Joseph Church is scheduled to in-clude the sacraments of initiation for 5 individuals. The Easter Vigil will also be celebrated without the sacraments of initiation at Most Holy Trinity Church at 7:30 pm.

Easter Sunday: Nine Masses are scheduled in Good Shepherd Parish on Easter Sunday, including additional Masses at St. Philip & St. Joseph. Check the schedule of Mass intentions for times / locations.

Easter Communion: In the USA, the obligation to receive Holy Communion at least once a year may be satisfied from the First Sunday of Lent to Trinity Sunday (May 21/22). For a just cause, this “Easter Duty” may be fulfilled at some other time of the year.
