Vocations: God brings us through difficult experi-ences and always leads us to life. Depend on the Holy

Spirit to guide you on the path of life (Lk 4:1-13). If you think God is calling you,

Prayer of Intercession: For church leaders, may they be instruments of peace and reconciliation,

we pray to the Lord...

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Last Monday, the Church began the first week in ordinary time. This

season is called ordinary because we count off the ordinal numbers every

week (2, 3, 4, etc). “It is a quiet period that offers a breather between the

intense celebrations of the mysteries of the birth, death, and rising of

Jesus Christ” (Paul Turner, Pastoral Companion to the Roman Missal).

The clergy wear green vestments during ordinary time as a symbol of

Christian hope. The season of Lent will begin on February 10, Ash Wednesday. (2) The

survey of parishioners announced last month will begin online this coming Monday,

January 18, if you provided us with your email address. If you were not able to supply

an email address, you can still participate by following the directions printed elsewhere

in this bulletin. I urge every parishioner to participate, including those who may be

housebound or travelling for some reason – everyone aged 18 and older. Your partici-

pation will be crucial for helping us plan for the future. (3) During the winter months,

the Monday through Friday daily Mass will follow public school system storm cancel-

lation procedures. If school in any given community is canceled or has a delayed

opening, any daily Mass scheduled in that community will be canceled. This is being

done out of concern for the safety of all concerned when snow and ice create hazardous

travel conditions. Overnight winter storms can make cleaning our parking lots and

priests’ travel in the early morning hours very difficult. (4) Parishioners sometimes ask

me for suggestions on how to jumpstart evening prayer or prayer before bedtime,

especially when they are tired or when they have a hard time making it a part of their

daily routine. I always urge them to take small steps to move ahead and to consider a

prayer form based on the Blessed Trinity; this can take as little as 3 minutes. Begin by

remembering any graces, blessing or especially happy experiences you received that

day; then thank God the Father for those blessings. Secondly, call to mind any sins you

may have committed that day; then ask God the Son to forgive you for those sins.

Third, enumerate your personal duties and challenges for the following day; then ask

God the Holy Spirit to guide you through them. Conclude the three-part reflection with a Glory be… This prayer form may also be fruitful for group or family prayer. (5) As

we approach the flu & cold season, I once again urge all church ministers including

ushers, servers, and ministers of the Eucharist to make use of the anti-bacterial hand

wipes available at all locations. Parishioners should not drink the Precious Blood if

there is any concern over spreading illness. For the same reason, some parishioners may

want to avoid physical contact during the sign of peace, but a gesture or a few words is

also appropriate. Frequent hand washing is recommended. (6) If you or a family mem-

ber require access via the handicap entrance to Saint Joseph Church, please consider

attending Mass at St. Philip Church or Most Holy Trinity Church. The work should be

completed soon. (7) Thank You of the Week: To the parishioner who made it possible

to provide remote coverage of the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass in St. Joseph Church

hall with the help of a cameraman, ushers, a cantor, and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne: A woman was buying an air-

plane ticket for herself and her little boy. Rather, she was trying to buy one just for her-

self. A sign said: CHILDREN TWO YEARS OLD AND UNDER GET A DISCOUNT.

The man at the desk suspected that the lad was more than two years old, so he asked:

“Do you know what happens to little boys who lie?” “Yes, I do,” replied the boy, “they ride for half fare.”

Eucharistic Ministers to the Homebound and Sick Good Shepherd Parish is blessed to have so many faithful people who visit and bring communion to our sick, home-bound, nursing homes and hospital. We would like to begin

by thanking you for the good work that you provide to those in need. With that said, those within our parish who request communion in our community continues to grow, and the need for more Eucharistic minis-ters to serve in this capacity increases. If you are not yet a Eucharistic minister, or, if you are already a Eucharistic minister for Mass and would like to bring communion to the homebound, we would like to invite you to contact the parish office at 282-3321. There are also opportunities to complete the survey after daily and Sunday Mass. You can obtain a paper copy in all of our churches or get one from the parish office at 271 Main St., Saco; 207-282-3321.

The survey will only be available from the week of Jan. 18 through Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10, and will ask you to reflect on your own spir-itual growth, and enable you to provide feedback on what efforts the parish is doing to help you grow. All responses will be confidential, and the parish will only receive information about the community as whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to Msgr. Mathieu, and our various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this summer, at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish. Thank you for helping with this important project! Be mindful of YOUR SAFETY during winter: Recently an elderly gentleman slipped on snow and ice while trying to make it to Mass. Please do not place yourself at risk if you are unsure of the conditions of the pavement you have to traverse. Also, consider giving elderly parishioners you know a ride to Mass, so they can be dropped off directly in front of the church entry.
