HISTORICAL NOTE In Hasted’s History of Kent, he says that Goldwell is a manor of great antiquity and refers to it being described in the Domesday Book by the name of Godeselle at which time it was part of the estates of the Bishop of Bayeux. It then became known as Goldwell and a family took their name from it. At the time of King John at the beginning of the 13th Century, Sir John Goldwell lived at the manor house and he is described as being ‘a commander of considerable note’. His descendants included two bishops, namely James Goldwell who was bishop of Norwich in 1472 and Principle Secretary to Edward IV, and Thomas Goldwell who was made Bishop of St Asaph in

1555. The manor house stayed in the Goldwell family until the early 17th Century when it passed to Sir William Wythins and then to Sir John Tufton. His eldest son Nicholas was created Lord Tufton and Earl of Thanet. At the time that Hasted’s book was published it was still in the same family then belonging to the Right Honourable Lord Sackville, Earl of Thanet.

A later book by Charles Igglesden – ‘Saunters Through Kent’ published in about 1990 – includes the following paragraph “continuing along the path past Court Lodge we make for a clump of trees – a landmark for miles around – and nearby is the historic old Manor House of Goldwell. It takes its name from the spring – a Golden Well – that lies under the cellar, and there used to be a legend to the effect that the water possessed curative powers over certain diseases. It is also said that a feeder of the Medway rises in this old well. When smuggling raged in this part of Kent, Goldwell lay in the line of transit from the coast to the inland ‘hides’, and around the old manor house many a struggled occurred”.

In “The Place Names of Kent” the name is said to come from the Old English words golde and wielle, meaning marigold spring or a spring where marsh marigolds grow. It seems that the present spelling was used from 1347.
