Oakville Speed Skating Club member ScottMacHattie was golden at the recent SpecialOlympics Provincial Winter Games in OwenSound, earning a pair of gold medals and addinga bronze.
MacHattie won the medals despite being theyoungest competitor at the event, skating to per-sonal-best times in every race.
The club also sent 64 competitors to a recenttwo-day ability meet in Brampton, by far thelargest representation of any participating club inOntario.
Ryan McAnuff and Jaroslaw Dubicki each claimedgold medals in their divisions, while Julian Aubert,Adam Craig, Devika Jain, Matthew O’Donnell andSheryl Sullivan each earned silver medals.
Zachary Lin and Graeme Stewart teamed toplace first in senior relay, continuing the OakvilleSpeed Skating Club’s tradition of success in relay
events.Adding fourth-place finishes at the ability meet
were Robert Lowery, Christopher Gemmell andJoshua Sullivan. Andrew Craig, Erin Heidecker,Paige Buchanan, Quinn MacHattie, Will Malcolmand Samuel Chin-Cheong all finished fifth intheir divisions.
The club’s “sub-club”, comprised of skaterswho have broken the one-minute mark in the500-metre distance, grew in Brampton as BlakeSullivan, Mathieu Masaro, Dubicki and Chin-Cheong all managed the feat.
The club will send more than 30 skaters to theprovincials next month in Ottawa, with Chin-Cheong and Stewart the latest to qualify.
Colin Skov, Cassandra Boychuk, Craig andGemmell have qualified for the next Ontario Cupmeet, which is a stepping stone towards provin-cials.

Plyley, Cummings lead U of Tto more provincial swim titles
Oakville’s Kate Plyley and CamCummings combined to win seven goldmedals as the University of Toronto Bluescontinued their provincial swimmingdynasty last weekend.
Plyley won four golds and two silversas U of T won its seventh consecutiveOntario University Athletics women’stitle Sunday in Guelph. Cummings cap-tured three golds and three silvers as themen’s team won its sixth OUA title in thepast seven years.
“I was really pleased with how I didand that the team won,” said Plyley, afourth-year ethics, society and law major.“Our goal was definitely to go in and winit.”
Plyley settled for a silver in the 400mfreestyle at last year’s OUA champi-onships after being overtaken in the final50m. This year there was no catching heras she won the event in a time of fourminutes, 21.29 seconds.
The 21-year-old would add anothergold medal in the 800m freestyle, leadingthe final wire-to-wire with a personalbest time of 8:58.23, giving her a six-sec-ond victory over teammate NathalieLacoste. In individual competition,Plyley also earned silver medals in the200m and 400m individual medley.
As a part of the Blues’ freestyle relayteams, she helped U of T break twoOntario university records. The anchoron the 4x200m team, Plyley brought
home an OUA record time of 8:21.58,breaking the Blues’ eight-year-old recordby three and a half seconds.
Plyley was also a member of the4x100m that won in a record time of3:50.94.
“The goal is to hit the podium at CIS,”the Q.E. Park grad said of the March 22-24 Canadian university championshipsin Halifax. “Last year we were second inboth freestyle relays.”
The U of T women’s team was rankedfifth in Canada heading into the OUAchampionships while the men’s teamwas fourth.
Cummings earned a gold medal inthe 400m individual medley, taking thelead on the opening length of the pooland never surrendering it to post a win-ning time of 4:32.89. Cummings, whowon a national medley championshipwith the Oakville Aquatic Club last sum-mer, added two more golds as membersof the 4x50m and 4x100m medley relayteams.
Cummings also collected three silversin the individual events, the 200m med-ley and the 100m and 200m backstroke.
A third Oakville swimmer also struckgold at the OUA championships. DaveLandry helped the McMaster Universitywin the men’s 4x50m freestyle relay teamand added a bronze in the 4x100mfreestyle relay.

THE HONOURABLE MR. JUSTICE DOUGLAS V. LATIMER, BA, LLB, QC died peacefully and gently on the evening of Thurs-day, February 8, 2007. His was a constant and noble spirit. Doug was a retired Justice of the Ontario Court, a title he wore with commitment and respect throughout his years on the bench. Born in Georgetown, Ontario, he attended Osgoode Law School and began his practice as a lawyer in Georgetown. In 1968, he became a Crown Attorney and in 1972, a Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice. He served well and faithfully on the bench for 32 years. As a young man, he joined the RCN(R) HMCS YORK and finished his naval career as a Lieutenant-Commander. He leaves his loving wife, Milree, the "sunshine of his life," his chil-dren, son David and his daughter Janice, whom he loved dearly; his son-in-law Steve Kostyshen, of whom he was very proud, his two grandchildren, Alex and Jack, the "lights of his life", his sister Joan Randell (Roger), sister-in-law Ruth, nieces, Gloria and Julie, nephews Scott and Mark, and Judi Egelnick to whom he was ever the senior sibling; sister-in-law Isabelle Tompkins ( Wayne), nieces Heather and Kathryn, and nephew Philip. He was prede-ceased by his mother Tryphosa , his father Donald, and brothers George and Ron. Doug gladdened the lives and hearts of all who knew him. Family, friends, and neighbours are left with the gift of his humour, his generosity, and his loyalty.
