Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Sabrina Gill, who both currently train at Manjak’s Gymnastics in Mississauga, will begin competition with the Beavers next fall. Colussi-Pelaez will be reunited at Oregon State with older sister, Silvia, who transferred to the school from Florida following the 2014 season. Mariana brings inter- national experience, having trained with the Canadian and Spanish national teams in recent years. She was sec- ond on vault and eighth all-around at last year’s Span- ish National Championships, and helped Canada to a second-place finish at the Massilia Open Cup in France in 2013. “She is a talented gymnast that displays grace and pow- er on every event,” said Oregon State coach Tanya Chap- lin. “Mariana is soft-spoken when you first meet her, but she does not shy away from hard work and taking risk. (She) will make an immediate impact.” Gill has trained and competed with the Canadian na- tional team and is currently attempting to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games. She was also part of Can- ada’s second-place team at the Massilia Open Cup two years ago, and was the 2010 national champion on bars. At the 2013 Elite Canada competition, she was third on beam, fourth on bars and eighth on floor. “Sabrina’s resume is very impressive. Loyola wins OFSAA basketball opener The Loyola Hawks won their open- ing game at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls’ AAAA basketball championships yesterday (Thursday) in Guelph, downing Missis- sauga Father Michael Goetz 62-36. Sam Pocrnic scored 31 points for Loyola, Julia Knez added nine and Kiana Steinauer tallied eight in the comfortable victory. The Hawks were scheduled to face No. 13 Earl Haig last night with a berth in today’s quarter-finals on the line. The tournament concludes tomorrow with the bronze-medal game at noon and the gold-medal contest at 2 p.m. Both games will be played at the University of Guelph. Cavaliers cruise in first game at provincials The King’s Christian Collegiate Cava- liers also won their first game at the OF- SAA girls’ A basketball tournament, 60- 28 over Englehart yesterday in Cornwall. OT, the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference finalists, lost its opening match yesterday to St. Michael’s College, 25-23, 15-25, 11-15. Minor Oaks Hockey Association product and current Oakville Blades defenceman Greg Campbell will join 2014 NCAA men’s hockey champion Union College next season. “I’m just thrilled and honoured to be a part of such an amazing program like Union,” Campbell said in a release posted on the Blades’ website. “They continue to graduate talented players that move on with their hockey careers. Also, their academic program there is top notch.” Campbell has recorded 23 points in 22 games this season for the Blades. He also competed at the Central Canada Cup All-Star Challenge last weekend, and was a member of Team Canada East at last year’s World Junior A Hockey Challenge. “Having the opportunity to watch Greg’s development from minor midget to now, I’m very happy he’s reached his goal of playing college hockey at Union,” said Blades general manager Mike Daley. “Greg has worked very hard to improve his weaknesses and has become such a poised defenceman on both sides of the puck.” Union College, which won its first NCAA hockey championship last year with a 7-4 victory over Minnesota in the final of the Frozen Four, already features another Oakville resident, former Blades forward Mark Bennett. Two Oakville gymnasts signed national letters of intent last week to join the Oregon State University program.

Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Sabrina Gill, who both currently train at Manjak’s Gymnastics in Mississauga, will begin competition with the Beavers next fall.

Colussi-Pelaez will be reunited at Oregon State with older sister, Silvia, who transferred to the school from Florida following the 2014 season. Mariana brings inter-national experience, having trained with the Canadian and Spanish national teams in recent years. She was sec-ond on vault and eighth all-around at last year’s Span-ish National Championships, and helped Canada to a second-place finish at the Massilia Open Cup in France in 2013.

Seven Oakville Speed Skating Club members will compete at the 2015 Cana-da Winter Games short track speed skat-ing trials this weekend in Clarington.

Erin Stewart, Alexis Halushak, Josh-ua Sullivan, Hana El Sammak, Sean McAnuff, Ryan Quesnelle and Nicho-las Kothleitner qualified for trials with strong showings at the first provincial meet of the season in Cambridge.
