Welcome to our first edition for 2016! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store.

The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take on board any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It’s these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals.

We are in the first weeks back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school?

We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics.

This edition features plenty of local news and events, along with some highlights from the festivities that took place during the Christmas break.

Enjoy your Community News, and remember, “If you change nothing, nothing changes”.

Did you know that in 1985 the average person had 3 close friends, people with whom they could confi de and connect with, people they felt comfortable with?

By 2004, that number had dropped to two. Those who had no close friends jumped from

10% to 25%, and people reporting a healthy circle of 4 or 5 friends dropped from 33% to just over 15%. So many of us are feeling those changes!

As we come into 2016, we might have many Facebook “friends” but the reality is, so many of us feel less connected than ever, cut off from those around us.

However, it is even bigger than that. As people open up about life, they speak of the spiritual vacuum they experience. They feel disconnected from God, as if their life is a spiritual desert; a waste land. Their life is rudderless, drifting with nothing of substance to hold onto or give direction, meaning, or purpose.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we want to do something about that.

Real life is to be enjoyed by being connected to the God who is real, who is there, and who can be known. We aim to create a community where people have good friendships and where they feel they belong, but also where they have a sense of greater purpose; knowing God and enjoying real life with Him

through a living relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. Consider God’s great words from the Bible in the book of

Joel, “Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate.”

If you’ve never tried Church or even if you’ve come a few times, or if you haven’t really connected with God, we would love you and your family to come on Sundays to fi nd real life by connecting with God and connecting with others. A great thing to do in 2016.

When we speak of beauty often what comes to mind is the physical beauty of a person. But we could also say that a selfl ess act to help

someone or a piece of music was “beautiful”. We see beauty in the innocence of a child, or when someone commits themselves to another in true love. We mean there is something noble, higher, or purer about it that delights the soul.

Experiencing beauty gives us hope in the midst of a troubled world because it tells us that good can still be found. Without beauty our souls shrivel up and struggle to thrive. But an experience of beauty, like love, brings light and vitality to our souls – it’s how our souls breathe.

For this reason, consistently encountering beauty in diff erent ways would be a worthy goal for the year ahead if we desire to live well.

To do this we must slow down. Beauty is found between the lines, in noticing things and taking in what is happening around us. Often we miss beauty in the rush.

Helen Keller, the fi rst deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree, wrote: The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart. Beautiful things like love or security (think about what it means to feel safe) are experienced inwardly. Even if you can see an exquisite work of art, or hear a stunning piece of music, the beauty of such things is lost to us until we let them move our heart.

Throughout the Bible people who discovered God spoke of his beauty – to discover him was to discover love, what is noble and pure and good, in a way that brought hope and delighted the soul. Finding him would be a worthy goal for the year ahead if we desire to live well in our troubled world.

The most popular theory about Valentine's Day origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn't want

Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and

performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed.

While in jail he wrote a note to the Jailor's Daughter signing it

TO SERVE CHRIST...

Natasha Duarte from Glenmore Park has won the 2015 UK Songwriting Contest, Rock Division with her song ‘Kissing Lips’ which was co-written with Marc Collis and Trevor Carter.

With over 7,000 entries worldwide, the Rock Category was very diffi cult to judge with strong fi nalists and many styles of rock entered. Natasha’s song was a favourite with the judges for its memorability, mix of retro style guitar riff s with a contemporary pop/rock feel and a catchy hook and chorus (Source: www.songwritingcontest.co.uk).

Natasha also amazingly attained 6 other fi nalist placings in various categories of the contest.

No stranger to the awards, Natasha has previously won the Video Category of the competition with another of her popular songs, ‘Punch Me In The Heart’.

The awards were judged by a long list of top Grammy, Emmy, CMA, BRIT Award and Platinum Album Award winning experts, including the legendary producer Stuart Epps (Elton John, Robbie Williams, Oasis), Shelly Peiken (number one hits with Christina Aguilera and others,) Britney Spears' musical director and BRIT Award winner Simon Ellis, top producer and arranger Dr Richard Niles (Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Take That, Mariah Carey), Sting's producer and Double Grammy and Emmy winner Kipper Eldridge (see photo with UKSC winner Emma), CMA Award winning country star Lucie Diamond, chart topping songwriter Mark Cawley, TV and Film Composer Jamie Serafi , and UKSC winner and Platinum Album artist Natalie Chua (who was signed by Simon Cowell after her UKSC win).

Natasha, signed to Empire Records, is currently writing songs for her new album and would love to co-write with other writers such as Matt Corby. You can catch her perform every weekend at venues in Penrith, Sutherland, Sydney CBD and other areas.

Fiona Scott MP wins The Northern Road upgrade extension through to the Great Western Highway

As part of The Western Sydney Local Roads Package, Round 2, upgrades to The Northern Road will now be extended through to the Great Western Highway.

Last month’s announcement will see The Northern Road upgraded from the Great Western Highway, all the way through to Narellan.

This will compliment upgrades to the Northern Road (north) which have been brought forward 18 months, meaning construction on Stage Three is due to begin early next year. That will see major upgrades of intersections at the M4, Glenmore Parkway and Bradley Street.

Recently the Federal Government announced extending the project from the M4 through to Jamison Road. Extending the upgrade again through to the Great Western Highway will be a major boost to this important carriageway. Work will focus on upgrading intersections along the stretch and will cost $6.7 million.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “This is great news for local residents and motorists. Upgrading The Northern Road is an issue I’ve championed from the beginning.

“Congestion on this road is a topic often talked about by local residents. I am proud to be part of a Government who has listened and is acting, with approving upgrades through to the M4 and now all the way to the Great Western Highway.

“I thank the Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher and NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay for working together on this vital piece of infrastructure for Western Sydney”.

As part of the upgrade, there will be increased:

» Right turn capacity on Great western Highway, westbound at The Northern Road; » Right turn capacity on The Northern Road, north bound at

Great Western Highway » Median adjustment and lane widening on the Northern Road

southbound at Great Western Highway » Widening Derby Street approaches to The Northern Road to

enable dedicated right turn lanes » A new roundabout at the intersection of Bringelly Road and

Caddens Road » Minor land acquisition » Removal of parking and/or peak hour parking restrictions on

The Northern Road and on Derby Street approaches

The upgrade is a key part of the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering better infrastructure for Western Sydney.

PARENTS CORNER

Last week I listened to a talk given by Professor Bruce Tonge. He was talking about parenting in general, and parenting a child with a disability more specifi cally. One thing, that Professor Tonge said, really rang a bell with me.

He said ‘Parenting is an active process’.How true is that? Nothing in life is achieved by sitting down,

and this is especially true of parenting. Children don’t grow themselves up, and parenting gets harder as your children get older. You only get out of it what you put into it, and children do better in every way when their parents are actively involved in their lives.

When you think of everything your children need to learn about themselves and the world, the mind boggles. And parents are their children’s fi rst teacher. It is not up to school to teach children everything. Getting along with others, managing emotions, practical skills, literacy, self-care, etc., doesn’t start when children go to preschool or school. Learning starts from birth.

And children don’t always learn stuff by being specifi cally instructed. They learn it in relationship with us, their parents. They learn it in the daily interactions – all day, every day. It’s not something that you turn on once per week on Sunday. As a parent you are always ‘on’.

What an awesome responsibility this work of raising children is. But there is a fi ne balance isn’t there? Between being ‘too much’ and ‘too little’. How do we achieve ‘just enough’?

There is a strategy in the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course called “incidental teaching”. It’s such a gentle and nurturing strategy of getting alongside your child. Finding out what she knows, and scaff olding her to learn more and develop competence and self-esteem, without being overprotective, overbearing, or dismissive.

When we achieve ‘just enough’, there is an exchange of energy that is both nurturing and rewarding, for both parent and child. And it actually requires less mental and physical eff ort from us. I think it is called ‘going with the fl ow’.

Here is a testimonial from a parent who did Triple P in last year…

“Triple P is going well. Our house is so much quieter than it used to be :). Had such a beautiful moment … my eldest son said this to his dad “Mum, she does discipline us, she is just much nicer about it. She talks to us nicer and we respond better, it’s what she learnt at Triple P.” I had tears of joy in my eyes, thank you so very much! My two boys are more responsible, more positive towards each other, are learning new skills and are allowed to do more things now that I have more consistent boundaries in place. They both appreciate and respect the logical consequence system. My eldest boy with ADHD is rarely in time-out or quiet time and true meltdowns are rare now too.” Sarah, (September 2015)

If you would like to learn more about parenting strategies that can help you to spend more time and energy on the things that matter, check out “Triple P” on the Resourcing Parents website (http://resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/).

At this stage, the doctors aren't able to tell him whether he will walk again, but it is safe to say there's a long rehabilitation and/or health management road ahead.

Richie's family have faced some pretty tough challenges over the past couple of years, but they're a strong bunch. Richie and his wife Taylor's twin little girls have recently been diagnosed with Autism and severe developmental delays along with neurological complications of their own. They require regular speech and occupational therapy sessions along with additional attention from their doctors and specialists to help them to participate in life to their fullest. Richie has struggled in the past with intermittent disability, sometimes for weeks or months at a time, but none of that has been as severe as this. Richie's two older children help to keep spirits high when they're with their dad, Taylor, and their little sisters.

Richie and Taylor have so far been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that others have shown whilst Richie has been hospitalised. With Taylor traveling the 40 minutes from home to the hospital and then back daily, family and friends are chipping in every way they can, including looking after the twins, cooking and helping around the house, popping by for a visit and a chat or to drop by for a coff ee.

Richie is a qualifi ed personal trainer, specialising primarily in rehabilitation for clients suff ering spinal problems such as severe back pain, postural problems and scoliosis. Other clients have experienced signifi cant weight loss successes through physical and mental aptitude training and support. He has a high success rate, with most clients reestablishing normality, and a renewed sense of fi tness and life. But he doesn't see himself being able to return to his work for quite a while, if this is even an option in the

future. Taylor is spending more time away from work in order to care for the kids, and be by Richie's side. The medical costs are fast adding up, and there's a chance they'll be needing to make some bigger costly equipment purchases including a hoist lift to get in and out of bed, bathroom renovations, access ramps and support poles, electric wheelchair, car upgrade and regular visits to specialists to help manage a potentially permanent disability, or to support Richie's road to recovery.

Driven by Richie's friend, Alan, a benefi t night will be held.Raise for Richie will be held at Penrith Paceway Trots on 18 February 2016, it will bring together family, friends, local sponsors and the wider community to show Richie that when a brother or a mate is down, we're all here to give him a hand up.

Every little bit counts, so if you can spare, please lend a hand to Richie by purchasing a table at next month's benefi t night, Raise for Richie. Tables seat 10 and are selling fast. But you can also help by donating on this page. https://www.gofundme.com/raiseforrichie2016

Disc problems are very common. Up to 81% of people will have disc bulging, 33% disc herniation (slipped disc) with no back-pain symptoms (Stadnik 1998). Lumbar-disc herniation is most common in people aged 30–50 years, men twice as likely as women. Many people (1-3%) suff er from disc related pain (Jordon 2009), often for years.

Discs are fi brocartilaginous joints between vertebrae. They take the weight on the spinal column, cushion vertebra during compression and act like a ligament holding vertebrae together. A spinal disc is a little like an old style donut. It has a fi brous tough outer layer (annulus fi brosis) that holds in an the “cushioning” softer gel-like inner core (nucleus pulposus).

Three main disc issues exist. All can cause pain due to infl ammation & nerve impingement.

1. Disc protrusion: disc remains structurally sound but bulges out at the sides.

2. Disc extrusion: the tough outer layer of the disc tears & part of the softer inner core protrudes through.

3. Disc sequestration: under extreme compression, all of the softer inner core material is squeezed out of the disc into the surrounding tissue.

Chronic disc compression due to excess body weight and tight core muscles, or both, can lead to weakening & damage to discs. Extreme acute pressure during a lift can also damage discs. Defi nitely avoid strengthening the core or lifting if you have disc associated pain.

The strength of the connective tissue that makes up the disc

is vital. Age and nutrition are the key. Older people generally have weaker connective tissues, but nutrition & eating right is crucial. Bone broth, greens, nutrient dense unprocessed and fermented foods provide nutrients to keep your weight optimal and your bones & discs strong at any age. Weight bearing exercise provides hormonal signals to build strong discs if diet is adequate.

Obviously prevention is far better than cure but if you do have disc related back pain which hasn’t resolved, why not come talk to us at BHW. Muscle elongation therapy targets the cause of ongoing disc pain, & in many cases, it can remove the need for ongoing medication both before or after surgery – see our ad for contact details.

Slipped Discs – Not Always a Life Sentence!

Temporary Pools an Accident Waiting to Happen

Infl atable pools may take only moments to set up but can take away a lifetime if proper safety procedures aren’t followed.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said temporary and infl atable pools require the same standards of fencing as permanent, in-ground pools to ensure they’re safe.

“If a pool can hold 300mm deep of water, it must have complying safety fencing and gates in place, as required by law,” Councillor McKeown said.

“It’s not about stopping you having fun, it’s about potentially saving people, mainly children from drowning or suff ering lifetime horrifi c injuries with a near-drowning.

“Parents must also be vigilant at all times whenever there is water in the pool, please watch your children, even if they’re confi dent swimmers, accidents can happen.”

“Many people don’t realise when they buy one of these infl atable pools that it’s illegal to have an unfenced pool in a suburban backyard, this is not only to make sure your own family members are safe but also others who may come into your yard.”

For more information on safety requirements please visit https://www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/Services/Health-and-Safety/Pool-safety/ or call Council on 4732 7897

As we all welcome in the New Year, life returns to normal. Holidays come to an end, work schedules return and the important job of raising children continues.

If you are a mum of young children and you don’t want life to return to ‘normal’ as your New Year’s resolution was to get out the house more and meet new people, then you should attend an Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) — Hawkesbury/Nepean group meeting. They are held twice a month in Glenmore Park and once a month in the Hawkesbury. All are welcome but be warned, getting out of the house to make new friends can be addictive.

According to Nicole Bridges, volunteer breastfeeding counsellor with the group, ‘Sometimes it can be isolating to fi nd yourself at home with a young baby. Your partner goes back to work, your friends are at work and you fi nd yourself focusing on your children and for the bulk of day you are the only adult in sight. Sometimes it is nice to get out there and meet other mums with young kids, hear their stories and learn from each other. That is what ABA is all about, helping mums fi nd the support and information that helps them in their parenting journey.’

‘We have mums attending whose babies range in age from a few days old to preschool age. Everyone is welcome to come. Mothers can enjoy getting out of the house, having a cup of tea and watching the children play with new friends.’

‘We also have qualifi ed guest speakers come in and lead

discussions on topical issues to do with child raising. Topics that will be covered in February include baby massage, introducing solids and a social play date in a local park’, said Ms Bridges.

To see a full list of meeting locations, contact details and dates visit: www.bluemountainsaba.com and click on the bulletin tab.

If you have young children and want to get out of the house more in the New Year, get in touch with the Hawkesbury/Nepean Group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association and come along to one of our group meetings and enjoy a cup of tea while the kids play. You won’t regret it.

COUNSELLING CORNER

4 Reasons Why Kids Should Play with DollsDolls are fabulous toys for both girls and boys, especially those going through grief.

Dolls teach children things about life, emotions, love, loss and problem solving within their environment. They develop cognitive and motor skills, language skills, caring and nurturing skills, and teach children how to navigate through strong and challenging emotions.

Playing with dolls teaches children about their own world and the world they’re growing into.

1. Develops cognitive and motor skills through: Dressing and undressing dolly, Brushing hair, Feeding dolly with a spoon, Bathing dolly, Potty training, Pretend play, Manipulating dolly to stand, sit and move.

2. Develops language skills: Playing with dolls helps in pretend play by making opportunities to learn, use and practice speech and language skills, which expands their vocabulary. Children learn this by: Naming and recognising body parts, Teaching items of clothing e.g. shirt, blanket, singlet e.t.c., Answering What? Where? Why? Questions. For example “What is dolly doing?” “Where is dolly?” “Why is dolly crying?”, Dolly can interact with other toys to learn “Where?” dolly is in relation to the other toys e.g. Dolly is next to the car, Learning verbs (action words) like “Dolly looks hungry, does she want something to eat?”

3. Developing caring and nurturing skills by: Taking responsibility for their doll, Copying parenting behaviour (It’s important for parents to take notice of how children play because it gives you huge clues into how they (the child) sees you as a parent and guide), Learn respect and responsibility

4. Developing emotional intelligence: Children often feel overlooked by adults who are dealing with grief. They’re overwhelmed by their emotions and feelings. Playing with dolls helps children bring emotions down to a manageable size. Dolls off er support by: Listening to the child’s problems, Being their as a companion, Acting out what the adults are doing, Searching for answers.

I believe that both girls and boys should play with dolls to help them learn empathy, compassion, fi ne motor skills, social skills and emotional intelligence.

HAPPY 40th Old Man!

10th February

Finally your age has caught up to your hair!

Financial Top Tips for 2016The kids are back at school, you’re back at work and 2016 is in full swing. Why not

make this year the year you get your debt under control and start working towards another fi nancial goal like buying a home or an investment property or saving for retirement or any number of things. Here are my top 3 tips for a fi nancially successful 2016.

1. Budget. Budgeting doesn’t have to be confusing. Sit down with a cuppa, pen and paper and 3 months statements for your credit cards and bank accounts. Read through line by line writing what each expense/debit was for. Once you’ve done this group these expenses together on your paper. Groceries, Petrol, Fast Food, Utilities, Entertainment, etc, with a total for each. Add in any annual expenses that may not have appeared on your statements. Now you have a very accurate record of how you spend your money. Find areas where you can cut back and write a new list with a budgeted amount for the next 3 months in each category. Then in 3 months’ time, repeat the process and see how you did.

2. Debt Consolidation. Unless you are having serious trouble making repayments, consolidating credit card debt into your home loan is a TERRIBLE idea. All it does is make your home loan harder to pay off . A better solution is to do a “balance transfer” to another credit card off ering 0% interest and pay off the debt before the interest free period ends. If you don’t have the spare income to do this, then apply for a personal loan with a 5 or 7 year term. Whichever way you choose, make sure you cut up your old credit cards.

3. Review your Home Loan. This should be an annual activity as the market changes so frequently and is very simple to do. Simply send us your last home loan statement and we will let you know if there’s a better deal in the market for you.

4. Make 2016 be the year that you got on top of your fi nances.

Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2015 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos.

Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!

Leo The Guide Dog Puppy

Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October 2015 and he graduated from Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in November 2015. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and Leo attended the Meet The Pups Day at Glossodia Guide Dogs Centre in November, a training session at Penrith Christian School in November, Christmas in the park at Surry Hills in December and a walk through the

streets of Penrith in December. It is great to see Leo catch up with his litter mates and be exposed to diff erent environments. Leo is growing up so fast, he is through the chewing phase of life (well nearly!!), he is fi nally toilet trained and he is a cheeky little puppy.

Camille’s other dog Pony is fi nally playing with Leo. Camille lost 2 of her other dogs (Callie and Bella) this year and when the new puppy arrived Pony was sooo not interested. Pony was never nasty to Leo, he just ignored him totally. Every day without fail, Leo would go up to Pony at least 100 times and say 'Hi my name is Leo, do you want to play?' and Pony would turn his head away and ignore Leo.

It took Pony 7 weeks to start playing with Leo, and when they started to play together it was as if they were friends forever. Full on wrestling matches around the house and yard, sharing the beds, and licking each other's faces. Too cute! Pony obviously needed time to get over the loss of his 2 friends and accept the new pack member.

Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog.

We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.
