New Community Group

There was a good turn up last month for the new community group with a new committee formed. The group will focus on positive plans and events for the future as well as dealing with local issues.

The new name will be decided on at the next meeting but if you have an idea then please email it through to the editor. There will be a prize for the winning suggestion so think about something to reflect Glenmore Park’s aspirations. The next meeting is the 12th August 7.30pm at the Floribunda Centre.

Scout ‘Job Force’ Prepared To Work

Scout Job Month is on again! 1st South Penrith Scouts will be

out and about during June and are looking for jobs to do in the commu-

nity for a just reward. It provides an opportunity for the cubs and scouts to learn new skills, to provide a serv-ice to the local community and raise funds for their group.

Jobs can range from gardening, dusting, to cleaning the car. They can be for individual scouts or can be a project for the whole group. Last year the group was involved in building a bonfire for a 21st birthday party, col-lecting firewood, delivering pamphlets and gardening.

“Kids Holiday Club” It’s pretty common to hear

people say “the kids are our fu-ture”. There’s a whole lot of truth in that isn’t there! It is so impor-tant isn’t it for us to think about what it is that we want our kids to learn and the values we want to them to have, and in turn, to pass onto their children.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we believe that a key way to do this is to let our children know about the God who loves them and about how good it is to love him. Jesus himself said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the king-dom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.”

Many of the activities at our church are set up with this goal

of helping children know Jesus. One great opportunity that kids will have to learn more about our good God is at the July Holiday Kids Club. See the ad for all the details.

We have run these Kids Holi-day Clubs each year for the past few years and the kids have an absolutely fantastic time! Lots of games, activities, music, skits, stories, friends and food! New Child restraint laws

The NSW Government has up-dated Child Restraint Laws, which commenced on 1st March 2010. The new Laws require ALL children under seven years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Driv-ers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows. Drivers will also

need to ensure that children aged four years to under seven years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years.

An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can hit the driv-er with force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. Surveys carried out by Kidsafe have found that some 69% of all child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and some 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. Most importantly, properly fitted child restraints can reduce the

risk of death or serious injury in road crashes by up to 70%. It is therefore vitally important to have all child re-straints fitted, if not inspected, by a trained professional.

year 12 at Penrith Christian School who has been working within the communi-ty. The school nominated her for MP David B a d b u r y ’ s C o m m u n i t y and Leader-ship award which she won

in December 2009 for displaying com-munity leadership and social justice.

Sam has been involved with fund-raising for various missions around the world and is now leading the school group of Exoday, a ministry by Youth Alive NSW which reaches out to teen-agers. She is preparing to go to Tonga in July to help support and work with a school there.

Sam has a part time job and is studying for her HSC but still finds time to help others. Well done Sam.

World Haidong Gumdo Games

Haidong Gumdo is a sword mar-tial art which draws from Korean bat-tlefield tactics and techniques to build a curriculum for mental, physical and spiritual development. Students of Haidong Gumdo learn meditation and proper breathing exercises that will relieve stress and promote a healthy body and mind. Although most people will not have heard of the name, Hai-dong Gumdo is now one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world.

locally built John Bonwick has been building

aviaries and rabbit hutches for many years at his premises on Russell Street in Emu Plains. John started out mak-ing wire ladders for cave and crevass-es in Antartica exploration. Then he added ladders for lighting rigs at rock concerts, fishermen and bird watchers. About 20 years ago he added quilting hoops for patchwork but now aviaries are the major part of production.

John builds his aviaries, rabbit hutches, chicken pens and dog runs on a standard modular basis so that they can be easily extended to a vari-ety of shapes and sizes. You can see many of them displayed at the premis-es on Russell Street in Emu Plains.

Orchard Hills veterinary HospitalWhat happens when your beloved

pet breaks a bone? Itcan be repaired in a number of ways and it usually depends on the type of fracture, which bone is fractured, the age of the pet and the size of the pet. Recently we have had 4 pets with broken bones.

‘Boots’ is a 10 month old domestic shorthair cat who has a habit of climbing onto the roof and jumping off! Boots had a fractured radius, which is a bone in the front leg. Boots came in every week for a cast change to ensure that he did not get any pressure sores from the cast. Once the cast was removed after 5 weeks, Boots had a great time licking his leg again. Hopefully Boots has learnt his lesson and does not climb on the roof again.

‘Winston’ is a Miniature bull terrier puppy who fell down the stairs while p l a y i n g . Winston was radiographed and was found to have a greenstick fracture of the femur, which is his thigh

bone. Lucky for Winston, greenstick fractures heal very quickly within 2-4 weeks. A bandage on the leg was all that was required to provide some support while the bone healed itself. Winston even managed to complete his Puppy Pre School Training while wearing his bandage.

‘Freckles’ is a 5 year old 40kg Mastiff who went missing for a night and came home not using his back leg at all. The owners suspected that Freckles had been kicked by a cow. He was found to have a fractured tibula and fibula (shin bones) with several pieces of fractured bone at the fracture site. As Freckles is a large breed of dog and the bone was badly broken, he was sent to the Parramatta Veterinary Surgical Specialists who placed a stainless steel plate over the fracture site and obtained a bone graft from his hip to place at the fracture site. Freckles had the added complication of having an injury of the skin over

the fracture site which potentially may have allowed bacteria to penetrate into the wound and bone, so Freckles was placed on a long course of antibiotics. Freckles bone has healed well and he is running around again.

‘Faye’ is an 18 month old German Shepherd dog who hurt her front leg after a heavy metal pole fell on her. Radiographs revealed that Faye had broken 3 of the 4 metacarpal bones in her paw. The bones were not badly displaced and a cast was applied to the leg to provide stability whilst the bones repaired. Faye had weekly cast changes and is due to have follow up radiographs soon to ensure the bones have healed sufficiently to remove the cast.
