GLENMORE PARK

Domino’s Pizza opened its doors in Glenmore Park last month with a strong fi rst month of sales as they served piping hot pizzas to the local community.

Domino’s Franchisee Stefan So, a local father of two, previously worked in mining before deciding to take the plunge and become a franchisee and said he was looking forward to working for himself.

“I would often be working 60 plus hours a week and wouldn’t get much time with my family and I thought it would be better to spend all those hours working towards something for me, rather than for someone else.”

Stefan decided to go into franchising with Domino’s because of the great business model and the demand for the quality product.

“Whenever we ordered pizza as a family we would get Domino’s and the stores were always busy with people walking out with stacks of pizza – I knew it was a good product and I’d have the support from the local business,” he said.

As well as creating jobs for Glenmore Park locals, Stefan is also looking forward to getting to know more people in the local community and getting involved in local events.

“We are looking forward to supporting as many local initiatives as we can and encourage everyone to come down, introduce themselves and say Hi.”

Last month Domino’s also announced that customers with Smart Watches are now able to order in just two taps, streamlining the ordering process down to simply seconds. The Company earlier this year announced new tracking technology, GPS Driver Tracker which allows customers to track their order from store to their door.

For more information on how to become a Domino’s franchisee visit www.dominosfranchise.com.au.

Domino’s Pizza Enterprises was Australia’s fi rst publicly-listed pizza company and is the master franchisor for the Domino’s Pizza brand in Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Japan. Across these six markets, DPE and its franchisees operate over 1500 stores.

It is sad when life becomes so routine that things that are special, things that deserve celebration, are largely taken for granted. For many people, Christmas has a danger of becoming like that. What I mean is that, every year Christmas makes a big splash in our lives,

but then we move on, hardly noticing that it has happened, until next year when we do it all again.

And really, it is no surprise some of us feel like this, because it seems as if Christmas decorations and paraphernalia are on sale in the shops earlier and earlier, and it can become a bit of a “ho hum, here we go again” sort of thing.

Yet at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC), we know that the joy of Christmas, the joy of celebrating the coming of Jesus into our world, is always something that should be celebrated, something that should be enjoyed, and something we should make a very big deal about.

We know this because in the Bible, God declares to us how Jesus came into our world to give us a fresh start with God and a real, sure hope for the future as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, committing our lives to him.

At GPAC, especially at Christmas, we want to share this message of great joy and hope with everyone in Glenmore Park and beyond.

GPAC’s Christmas celebrations kick off with our Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganza (see the advertisement on this page). These events have become so popular, we have added a fi fth event on the Thursday night for the whole family! We would love to see you!

Our fantastic “Carols in the Park” is on again at Blue Hills Oval on Sunday 20th December and our Christmas Celebration Services are 6pm and 11pm on Christmas Eve and 8am and 9.30am on Christmas Day. Watch out for more information on this.

But for now, my prayer is that as over the weeks ahead as you prepare for Christmas that you will be looking forward to celebrating the new life and real joy that you can have in Jesus.

Glenmore Park resident Dee Kerr has started a petition and lobbied Penrith Council to introduce a new Bark and Play Park to the local area.

So far, the passionate dog owner of two has acquired hundreds of supporters on her petition ‘Dog Park in Glenmore Park’ found at Change.org as well as a Glenmore Park Bark and Play Facebook page.

“The local community needs a dog park. With smaller backyards, dogs and their owners will benefi t with exercise at a safe fenced park. It will prevent the community from exercising their dogs in prohibited areas. They will be able to socialise in an environment that can also benefi t the elderly, people with disabilities and social/isolation issues” said Dee.

After emailing the Penrith Council and the South Ward Councillor, Dee hopes that the community support on both her Change.org petition and Facebook page will lead to the new dog park in the future. For More Info: Facebook Group: Glenmore Park Bark and Play

A record crowd of over 3000 Western Sydney residents, many of whom were residents of Mulgoa Rise estate, attended the third annual Community Festival at Mulgoa Rise on Sunday 18 October.

Hosted by Mulpha Norwest and themed ‘Picnic in the Park’, the Community Festival was held on the sporting fi elds on Bradley Street, with local residents, their families and friends enjoying a great day of fun and festivities.

Those in attendance enjoyed rides, entertainment, food and drinks, courtesy of Mulpha Norwest. Triple M crossed live throughout the day, and there was live entertainment and exhibitions by various dance groups from Glenmore Park’s premier dance studio ‘Excite Dance Co’.

Mulgoa Rise estate will provide quality housing for more than 600 families in a diversity of housing types from townhouses, townhomes, small and large executive lots when complete. Nestled at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, Mulgoa Rise has its own sporting fi elds and parks in the estate, with golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby.

Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park, and the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate. Mulpha Norwest is part of Mulpha International, whose portfolio includes Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast, Hayman Island and the Intercontinental Hotel.

Mulpha Norwest General Manager, Tim Spencer, said Mulpha Norwest is committed to building vibrant, family-friendly communities, and Mulgoa Rise is a prime example.

“We were delighted to see such a strong show of community participation and support from new residents and their families and friends at the Festival,” Mr Spencer said.

“Entitlement” is the idea that we have a right to something – that we are owed. This is legitimate if we have paid for something, but as an attitude toward life it robs our souls.

Our kids express an attitude of entitlement to the sorts of things people worked hard for a few decades ago, or gave up their lives fi ghting for

in wars. There is an increasing sense of entitlement to freedom, wealth, opportunities, and even to happiness. In the past it was understood that your life is what you make of it. Today we feel entitled to be happy if we live in Australia and pay taxes, or if there is a God. And if we are not happy we might turn against the current politicians and question God.

A sense of entitlement can rob us of gratitude, which is a big part of feeling happy. We see it in our kids and ourselves when we are never satisfi ed. Past generations had the satisfaction of working hard for things they valued, and today we certainly work hard, but don’t feel this same sense of achievement because we feel entitled.

The real trap is that when we feel entitled and cannot recognise everything we have as a gift, we feel that we have received nothing or that life and God is unfair.

The truth is that everything – even being alive today or the enjoyment of a good meal - is a precious gift and God doesn’t owe us anything! Have you considered why you live in Glenmore

Park when other good people struggle in slums in Asia? It’s not our entitlement…it’s a gift, and realising it blesses our soul with a sense that life is good and so is God.

Christmas celebrates what God has given us in his Son Jesus to save and help us – not an entitlement but a gift that is received by choosing to give him our allegiance.

Exciting local business, The Creative Fringe, recently won the ‘Best New Business’ Award at the Penrith City Local Business Awards held at Penrith Panthers. For owner and local Glenmore Park resident, Debbie O’Connor, the award is icing on the cake for the hard working team. “The Creative Fringe, along with coworking, is such a new concept to the Penrith area, so the amount of work that we have put into this business has been huge! Winning the outstanding new business award means that all that hard work has been recognised and rewarded. We are excited that others have seen the value and potential in our business” said Debbie.

The Creative Fringe was launched in April, 2014. It is a coworking space where consultants, small business owners and their teams, freelancers or commuters can come and work in a shared offi ce environment, connect, collaborate and grow their businesses.

For anyone wanting to start a new business, Debbie has some wise words. “Starting your own business may sound like a fun thing to do, but you will never work as hard or as many hours as you will when you start your own thing. The reward is that if you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work, and when you see your dream becoming a reality (and you get rewarded with awards), there is no better feeling!”

The Creative Fringe is located at Unit 6, 51 York Road, Penrith. They can be contacted on 1300 722896 or at www.thecreativefringe.com.au.

PARENTS CORNER

FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith

Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Last month I spent three days at Westfi eld Penrith promoting AD/HD Awareness Month. Shopping centres tend to bring out the worst in children and parents. Tired and harried parents. Tired, hungry, and overwhelmed children. It can be a volatile mix involving frustration, yelling, smacking, put-downs, and threats of abandonment. I’ve seen adult temper tantrums of extraordinary magnitude.

So, as I go to Westfi eld on the occasions when I am promoting the work that I do, I go with some trepidation about what I will see, hear, and feel. Well, this time I was most pleasantly surprised. On quite a few occasions I saw children who were very upset, having a moment. And how did the parents respond? They stopped to give their child a hug and a kiss. It was that simple. It was heart-warming. The parents realised that their child wasn’t giving them a hard time, they were having a hard time.

I heard Dr Justin Coulson speaking on the radio the other week. He does very good work and has a website called “Happy Families”. He provided an interesting analogy. If your child could not swim and fell into a swimming pool, what would you do? Would you yell at her, and tell her how stupid she is for falling in? No, you would jump into the pool and save her. And then what would you do? You would teach her how to swim. And that act of learning to swim can take quite a long time, involving much patience, practice and repetition - conquering fear, and celebrating achievements.

Children’s behaviour is the same. They are not giving YOU a hard time. Kids are little. They are learning how to manage themselves and how to navigate this big, scary, and wonderful world. They need us to help make things better, and to guide them how to manage their emotions and actions. And they need this, from us, over and over and over again. It’s our job to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person in the relationship (Circle of Security) and to teach our kids to go forward with courage and care.

And please know this, it is OK for you to ask for and receive help to be the best parent you can be. We are all in this together.

Construction Nears For New Glenmore Park School

Continued from pg.1

The Glenmore Park School project has benefi ted from extensive community consultation.

“As we have progressed with the concept and design the Department of Education has discussed the project with residents in neighbouring streets and suburbs, Parents and Citizens associations, local disability support organisations and Penrith City Council,” said Tanya Davies.

Over the past 5 years, the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has committed almost $4 billion to school infrastructure and maintenance.

Mayoral Statement –Airport UpdateThe Western Sydney Airport draft Environmental Impact

Statement (EIS) has been released for public exhibition by the Federal Department of Infrastructure and Development.

The public exhibition period closes on Friday 18 December 2015

"Last month we opened the EIS for the fi rst time like everyone else so I can’t comment on specifi c details. But I can assure you, ever since the airport was announced, we’ve been speaking to both State and Federal Governments on a whole range of issues we believe relate to an airport. We have also been actively pushing for the opportunities an airport can bring.

I consider the 60 day exhibition period inadequate to address the level of detail involved and the impacts an airport may have - this airport has already been with successive governments for decades.

The draft EIS is approximately 4000 pages. Penrith Council has been calling for a minimum of 90 days to respond to the draft EIS.

Penrith, along with neighbouring Western Sydney Councils (WSROC and MACROC) have appointed an independent team of experts to go over the EIS to inform our submission. This will ensure we can accurately represent the best interests of our community.

We’re looking for commitments on jobs, road, rail and other infrastructure to support the airport.

For Western Sydney and Penrith residents to benefi t as a result of the airport construction and operation, it needs to be fully integrated and connected with the region – through road and rail. This will stimulate jobs growth beyond the airport.

We also want to see that our natural environment and the amenity of our community is protected. The EIS must accurately address environmental and social impacts to ensure the health and wellbeing of our community is maintained and our beautiful natural environment protected. A key issue is how noise is to be eff ectively managed, this is not negotiable.

Each day more than 65,000 people leave our City to go to work – sitting on congested roads and crowded trains, taking them away from their homes and families. We’ve been consistently talking to both State and Federal Governments on a range of issues including a rail link between the airport and the western line.

Imagine the increased productivity if even before the airport opens, the Western Sydney Orbital was complete and the South West rail line extended through the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area to the western line. This would connect the North and South West growth centres and create access to tens of thousands of jobs within an easy commute." said Councillor Karen McKeown, Mayor of Penrith

PARENTS CORNERMONEY MATTERS

Loyalty is (now) a One-Way StreetIn the early 70’s I can remember going to the local Bank of NSW (now Westpac)

branch with Mum and Dad and my sisters to meet with the Bank Manager for a home loan. We were all dressed up and as we approached the door Dad turned to us kids and warned us sternly to be on our best behaviour, glaring at each of us and poking us menacingly in the chest.

Once inside, the Bank Manager greeted us by name, all of us, because that was our Bank and he knew us and we knew him. We went there all the time to bank Dad’s wages or to pay bills or any number of things.

The Bank Manager knew that my parents were dedicated, hard working and hon-ourable people and on the basis of their character as much as financial position he gave them a Home Loan. It was an age when the banks would back their clients in good times and bad, and in response earned the loyalty of their clients.

For better or worse things have moved on significantly since those days. Most transactions are done over the Internet and there is no personal relationship and as a result the Banks loyalty to their clients has also been lost.

Many of us remain loyal to our Bank because that’s what our Parents taught us. Sadly though, our loyalty counts for nothing. In fact Banks are more interested in at-tracting new customers than looking after existing clients.

Recently, APRA issued new lending requirements to banks and increased capital re-quirements. In response the Banks changed their lending rules in various ways and as I write this Westpac have just announced an increase in Interest Rates for existing customers!

Loyalty between Bank and Customer is now a one-way street and unfortunately cli-ent loyalty to their Bank is misplaced. If your Bank has declined a loan or isn’t offering you their best interest rate, talk to us. We can simply and easily tell you how much you can borrow and find you a great rate.

If you admire someone for making a diff erence to the Penrith community, then give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for a 2016 Australia Day Award.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said Council’s annual Australia Day Awards honour the everyday heroes whose outstanding contributions might otherwise go unrecognised by the general public.

“These awards highlight Penrith’s substantial array of citizens who excel in sporting, creative and artistic endeavours,” she said. “As well as a large number of community minded people who work tirelessly in the background to make our city a better place.”

2015 Penrith Citizen of the Year David Currie said he was proud to have raised his family in the local area and was humbled to win the award.

“It was such an honour,” David said. “At the Australia Day Awards when the Mayor presented me with the medallion, it brought back

memories of the many experiences of our vibrant community over the years, of the many who give freely of their time and eff ort to enhance living in Penrith.“As Penrith’s 2015 Citizen of the Year one really gets to experience the many cultural community events that make up our great city.”

To receive this prestigious honour, winners must demonstrate excellence in their fi eld and be considered inspirational role models for the community.

The Australia Day Awards highlight excellence across various categories including: Citizen of the Year, Young citizen of the Year (16-25 years), Sportsperson of the Year and Local Appreciation Awards (for community service). All nominees are considered for the Penrith Citizen of the Year Award and Penrith’s Local Hero Award.

Local business award winners – The Elders team. Photo credit: EventPix

Elders Real Estate Penrith and Wallacia recently won the ‘Real Estate Agency’ Award at the Penrith City Local Business Awards held at Penrith Panthers. For owner Damian Sexton and his team, winning the award has been a great accomplishment. “This awards shows that my team and I’s hard work and dedication has been noticed throughout Penrith, Wallacia and the surrounding suburbs.

The team is ecstatic to know that their clients and landlords are happy with their work and went out of their way to vote for us. It shows that the time, eff ort and dedication it took for all members of the team to open our second offi ce and have it up and running so smoothly and quickly has paid off ” said Damian.

Having worked in real estate for many years, but only being an owner for just over two, Damian is pleased with the goals his team is achieving.

“This shows me that I am heading in the right direction and have picked the right team to back me and help grow the business. We would like to say a massive thank you to all those who have supported us and helped us become the business we are today” he said.

Finally, Damian has some words of wisdom for anyone wanting to start a new business. “Starting your own business can be scary and a lot of people don’t look into the daily background work that is involved in keeping an offi ce running. When opening your own business the most important thing to focus on is having the right people working for you and helping you grow” he explained.

HEALTH MATTERS

One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture. So many people with back pain request or even expect their GP to order a scan and are disappointed or even

upset when this doesn’t happen. However as highlighted in a quote from an ABC Four Corners report on Sep 28, 2015, ‘the truth is, many of the scans, tests and procedures ordered by medical practitioners are wasteful, unnecessary and potentially harmful’! So if on occasion your GP denies you a scan for back pain they may actually be doing you & the public purse a favour.

I see patients scans & the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many types of bulging discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals & nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc.

There are many causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is

vital. In some cases what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful. In the majority of cases (as suggested by experts in the Four Corners report) scans reveal little about the cause of back pain, nor for that matter about likely response to treatment. Still many patients come in having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of debility. These folk then simply put up with the pain which is often quite high, even with multiple medications.

While not every case of back pain will be fi xed with manual therapies and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can have surprising results. Using specifi c techniques we remove infl ammatory fl uids from back tissues & lengthen them so that tissue function normalises. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months depending on the severity of the problem in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long standing cases.

COUNSELLING CORNER

Our lives, experiences, upbringings and families are all diff erent, but it would be fair to say that most of us set out quietly, hoping and secretly expecting to live a happy, successful and healthy life. This life would ideally be topped with some meaning and purpose, with a generous side order of solid and sustaining relationships.

But life doesn’t always go to plan or play fair….Watch any current aff airs show on any given day and you’re

bound to see someone who has come out the other side of some bizarre, horrifi c, near fatal, life challenging event. For those aff ected, it’s often a life-defi ning crossroad where everything changes, where they take stock of their lives and question what is truly important and alter their lives accordingly.

Author Matthew Johnstone, in his latest book, ‘The Big Little book of Resilience’, writes ‘I feel I’ve had a pretty blessed life but along the way there has been some defi ning moments. I had a near death experience following a massive asthma attacked; a friend and I were assault; he had his front teeth knocked out and I was chased by a guy with a knife who said he was going

to kill me. I stood a block from the World Trade Centre when it came down. And sporadically throughout my adult life, I have battled and thankfully overcome depression. All these events were horrible, painful and frightening but in many ways they forged the person, the father, husband and friend that I am today. I wouldn’t want to repeat any of the above but I wouldn’t want to change them either, mostly because I can’t. Collectively, they opened my eyes to what I hold dear and value in my life.’

Viktor Frankl , who miraculously survived three years in Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz, wrote in his book ‘Man’s search for Meaning’ that while we may have little control over events in our lives, what we have paramount control over is how we respond to those events.

We all have a story. We all have a journey with both good and bad. We all have the ability to overcome diffi culty and grow from the experience.

Go to www.matthewjohnstone.com.au to read more about his story.

Looking to Improve Your Core and Have a Tight Tummy for Summer?

Incorporate these 5 exercises into your strength routine for great results!! 1. Plank: When performed correctly, a simple

plank is one of the most eff ective ways to tighten your entire core. Correct technique is the key. Keep your back fl at and your belly button pulled in toward your spine.

2. Mountain Climbers: This vigorous variation of a standard plank kicks the core tightening up a notch. Angling your knees toward the opposite shoulder is a wonderful way increase the intensity even more. Place your hands wider than shoulder-width apart on the ground in a push-up position. Bring one knee to your chest and then back to the starting position, alternate each leg quickly.

3. Russian Twist: Nothing quite brings the burn like a properly done set of Russian Twists. By holding a medicine ball or dumbbell in your hands, the exercise becomes even more eff ective. Sit on the fl oor with knees bent like in a “sit-up” position. The feet should be kept together and slightly off the fl oor. Keep your torso straight and your back off the ground at a 45 degree angle. Hold a medicine ball or dumbbell with both hands. Next, the arms should be swung from one side to another in a twisting motion. Move slowly for a more challenging workout.

4. Knee Tucks: All too often I see people neglect their lower abs in favour of quicker, easier exercises. The fact is that our lower abs typically need the most work, so give them the attention that they need with these Knee Tucks. Start on your back, bend your knees with your feet on the fl oor and knees touching. Extend both arms overhead on either side of your ears, palms facing up. Exhale and bring your knees up towards your chest. Slowly lower your hips back down to start position.

5. Side Plank: Side Planks are much more challenging than they appear at fi rst glance. While the focus is mainly on your waist, due to the stabilising nature of this exercise, you’re also working your entire core as a whole.

Put your feet and legs together as you lie on your right side. Place your right arm under your body and lift your upper body so that your right elbow is directly under your shoulder. From this position, slowly raise your hips from the ground until a straight line is formed from your ankles to your shoulders. Hold the position for a moment, slowly return to the starting position, and repeat.

For best results these exercises MUST be combined with correct nutrition. Avoid processed carbs, packaged or fried foods. Fill up on lean proteins and fresh vegetables.

If you’re ready to take your results to the next level call or email me today and we will get you started on an exercise/nutrition program that will deliver massive results!
