GAZETTE
Principals' Report It’s Great to be Back! It is truly great to be back at BCS this week after some leave to attend to some personal issues. Thanks to the whole BCS team, especially the
executive teachers for filling in for me. It is always good to get out and have a look at what else is out there to make you appreciate what you have in your own school and community. I’ll take the stars and smiles of Barellan rather than the smog and agro of the city thanks very
much. Congratulations to the Masters Games committee. Unfortunately I missed the games this year but from all reports it was once again a resounding success. Well done to all of the organisers, com-
petitors (who are probably still sore!) and to the students of BCS who volunteered. Speaking of Volunteers….BCS students are involved in the new Premier’s Volunteering Challenge. Barellan Students (and their parents)
have an outstanding history of volunteering throughout the community and they now have an opportunity to be formally recognised for their efforts in a new initiative known as the Pre-mier’s Volunteering Challenge. This program is aimed specifically at Yr 9/10 students. If your child is in these years they will be bringing home a note with some more information shortly. Miss O’Keeffe underwent training and is the BCS co-ordinator for this program. Kelly will be present-ing more information about this program at an upcoming P&C meeting. Rugby League Clinic Our Friends at the ARL will be coming out to the school this Wednesday to provide some fun and fitness based on rugby league skills. These ac-tivities are focused on general skills and do not involve tackling.
Secondary Principals’ Council – An invitation to BCS as a high performing school.
One of the largest and most active organisations in public education is the NSW Secondary Princi-pals’ Council or SPC (The Riverina arm is known as the Riverina Secondary Principals Collegial Association – or RSPCA).
Each term the NSW Secondary Principals’ Asso-ciation conducts a professional Learning day for Principals and executive staff focusing on par-ticular areas of education, leadership and school management. Our team doesn’t attend every
term, choosing rather to pick and choose de-pending on the focus areas. This term the focus is on Rural Education and we have been invited to present a workshop to the NSW Secondary Principals about the con-tinuing success of our school and explain the workings of the Riverina Access Partnership.
My School Website The Myschool website went live last week to the usual media frenzy. The site contains information on a VERY narrow focus of the NAPLAN results and regardless of
the annual school performance of the school, needs to be viewed as a singular piece to a very large and complicated puzzle. If you have any questions or queries about the site of the information contained on the site, please contact the school and speak to one of the executive staff.

RAP GIRLS CRICKET REPORT
Riverina Cricket Champions; Alice Kenny,
Niomi Ohlsen, Hannah Kenny, Laura Lees
and Josephine Phillpot went to represent the
RAP girls cricket side in Narrandera on Tues-day.
They played the Kelso High School in the
final 16 Marie Cornish Shield. Although al-ready beating 4 other teams in the Riverina
we weren’t strong enough this time. We
made 52 runs, with Grace Cashmere from Hillston top scoring.
We were lucky Shane Gibson was available
to come to Narrandera on such a short no-
tice, being 1 player down.
ZONE SWIMMING REPORT
Last Friday an under strength Barellan team travelled over to participate in the AriahPark
Zone Swimming Carnival. Despite missing
more than a dozen swimmers we made the best of the great weather and all swam our
hearts out with almost 12 swimmers making
it to the Riverina level. Although we tried
our best, without some of our best swim-mers we couldn’t take the title and came
second to Ardlethan by 12 points.
BOOK CLUB
Mrs Male has a book in the front office. There was an order without a name.
If you ordered please contact the office.
PSSA RIVERINA CARNIVAL
Last Friday I went to Albury to represent
Barellan at the PSSA Riverina swimming
carnival. I won my heat and came 7th over-
all out of 22 other swimmers. Even though I
didn't make it away I am happy with my re-
sult and my time which was 44 seconds,
and I hope to do better next year. A big
thanks to my coach Heather White for help-
ing me so much. This week I am going to
Sydney to compete in the Speedo Classic at
Homebush, this will be fun because it is the
Olympic Pool and they have an awesome
play area. In two weeks time I'm going to
Canberra as part of the Riverina team to
swim in the Brophy Classic in freestyle,
breaststoke and butterfly. I don't really like
butterfly!!!! I hope they have a good
playground too.

PRIMARY NEWS Accelerated Literacy Parent Information Session I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who attended the AL information sessions last Wednesday. We had some very
positive feedback from the surveys and hope that we can provide you with more valuable in-formation soon regarding another aspects of your children’s education. ARL Rugby Clinic – On Wednesday, 9th March development officers from the Australian Rugby
League will visit our school and run clinics for primary students. The sessions will run for half an hour and will be run free of charge during school time. Stationery Supplies – Unfortunately we still have
a couple of students arriving at school unpre-pared for completing work. It is important that students have all the necessary stationery sup-plies, pens, pencils, erasers, etc. so that they are able to complete the work to the best of their ability. Keep it up!! – We have had a really good start to this term and I would like to congratulate all pri-mary students for their efforts and behaviour so far this term. Keep it up everyone. You’re doing well! Spellodrome – A representative will be coming to talk to staff next week and we hope to have the program up and running sometime after that.
BARELLAN CENTENARY In preparation for the BCS School Centenary, we
are asking for any memorabilia including school photos, magazines, archival footage, Poetry and Writing Samples by former students etc to be loaned to the school. Copies of Originals will be made and then returned to owners. We would also like to gather historic school and sporting uniforms to be used during the celebrations also.

RAP GIRLS CRICKET REPORT
The Open RAP Girls Cricket team played at
Narrandera on Tuesday 1st March against Kelso
High (Bathurst) in the Final 16 of the CHS
Knockout. We won the toss and elected to bat and
straight away knew we were in for a tough match.
In the opening spell Kelso had tore through our
attack with one of the bowlers taking 4-6 of her 5
overs. Most of our top order stayed around in the
middle for a while, all facing at least 12 balls, how-
ever found it tough to hit through the infield. There
were many times that the girls got some great shots
away only to see it stop 30cm from the boundary
and not have time to get back for a 2nd run. Grace
adopted the up and over technique which worked
for a while with a few great fours, however caused
her down fall and was caught on 21. Unfortunately,
this was not our best batting display and while all
girls tried their hardest the all 5 of Kelso’s bowlers
had their measure and they struggled to reach dou-
ble figures. In the end we were all out for 52 off 25
overs. So we headed to the field knowing early
wickets were vital if we were to be in with a
chance. Grace and Bethanie led the attack throwing
everything at the opening batters and somehow
they managed to get the bat in front. As frustrating
as that was they hadn’t scored too many runs,
finally Bethanie broke through with the bowl being
skyed and Bethanie taking a great caught and
bowled. We had a spring in our step. In came their
top batter and Grace wound up the run up and
delivered a maiden over. Bethanie applied the same
pressure in the next over and all though she got a
few away still looked shakey. Once again Bethanie
broke through with another caught and bowled. We
started to think we may have been in with a chance.
We then saw our Year 8 girls of Sophie and Han-
nah come into the attack (a pair that will no doubt
be a formidable duo in the future), both girls bowl-
ing great in the first two overs giving nothing away
and making the batters play at the ball.
Sophie got revenge by clean bowling the girl that
did all the damage in our innings and we were
sensing we were getting closer. The opposition
coach had suddenly become a little worried on the
sideline. Our girls continued to apply the pressure
but couldn’t get a wicket, but there were still 20
runs to get at drinks. Our girls knew it was now or
never, we needed a wicket. The opposition coach
sent instructions out to his girls to attack anything
they thought safe to get away and look for quick
runs. This seemed to work. They came out with
new confidence and managed to get a few fours
away.
Things weren’t looking good for RAP. Unfortu-
nately we couldn’t get another wicket and Kelso
went on to get the runs in the 20th over. Congratula-
tions to our girls who tried their hardest and never
gave up right up until the last ball. Kelso deserved
the win they out played us on the day and we
wished them the best of luck in the future. Thanks
to Shane Gibson for come over literally at the last
minute to make up the numbers. Thanks also to
Tony and Jarrod (Hillston) for giving up their day
to come to Narrandera and umpire, all of us really
appreciated your support. I would also like to thank
all the parents for their patience and driving the
students to games we have had a lot of date
changes and I really appreciated your flexibility.
With a few of the girls confessing that would be
their last game we head into a rebuilding phase.
With the young talent in the team I have full confi-
dence that RAP will make the Final 16 again in the
future. Thank you girls for your manners and
sportsmanship over the games it has been a pleas-
ure to go away with you and I hope you are proud
of what you have achieved. Team members Grace

YEAR 2/3 NEWS
The Year 2/3’s first Accelerated Literacy text for Term 1 has been, ‘The ANZAC day Parade’ by Glenda Kane and Lisa Allen. We enjoyed Lisa Allen’s illustrations and we made collages
about war.
I can read the whole book myself. Jacob Ashman
It is sad that Hughie Ward died in World War II. Paige Kenny
This book tells you that you shouldn’t like war and that Glenda Kane didn’t like war. You shouldn’t go to war because you could get killed or very badly hurt.
Kylie Giddings
We talked about the book, read the story and learned how to write like Glenda Kane.
There he stood on the sun-parched hill, A straggler from 18th Battalion. A chest-load of medals, a leg full of shrapnel:
That’s what he got for his valiance.
By Glenda Kane
There she sat on the rain-soaked seat, A loner from the school excursion.
