August has been a great month for competitive golf both nationally and locally with our Regular and Senior PNC. I do not think we could have scripted Championship Sunday at Valhalla to be any better than it was. Rory seems to be on a historic run and only the hands of time will sort out how he stacks against the games
legends. Locally, some wonderful golf has been played on the journey to the 2015 PGA and Sr PGA Championships. Congratulations to first time Gateway PGA “Major” winner Ryan Roy for taking home the top spot at Persimmon Woods
Golf Club. The October breeze in August provided an extra challenge to this great test of golf. In the end Jeff Schmid, Shane Blankenship, and Grant Masson were the qualifiers to join Ryan Roy in the journey to Whistling Straights. On the Senior side, Lake Forest Country is always about ball placement and putting. Bob Gaus did just enough of that formula to hold off hard charging JC Anderson and the steady play of Rob Sedorcek. Rob had two very solid rounds of golf while JC shot 76-66 to earn his spot in Port St Lucie in November. Gaus, Sedorcek, and Anderson will be joined by Larry Emery and Mark Faulkner. Please read all the tournament news below and the best of luck to our qualifiers.
Gateway PGA Awards Nominations end Friday, August 22nd. Please take the time to nominate a deserving PGA Member who is an exemplar in one or more of the award categories. This process is a special time for our Association and means a great deal to our deserving nominees. Monday, December 8th will be our Awards Dinner and it will be hosted at Forest Hills Country Club. This year we are fortunate to have All Star Pro-Golf as our title sponsor of the Awards Dinner. Please take a moment to thank JP Kramer and All Star Pro Golf if you have the opportunity.
Please keep in mind that this year is also an election year and time is running short to put your name on the ballot. If you are interested in running for a position on the board of directors, you must submit your intentions on paper to Nathan Charnes, Section Vice-President, by November 8. If you are interested in learning more about serving the board of directors for the Gateway PGA, please contact myself or a member of the board.
Lastly, I would be remised if I did not mention the extraordinary efforts of Jon DePriest. Jon has raised over $11,000 in his PGA Golf Day efforts including one $5,000 donation. Thank you Jon for being such an impactful PGA Professional and thank you to those who put in the time and energy to support this cause. I look forward to the concluding months of programming within the Gateway PGA and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, ideas, or concerns.

GROWTH OF THE GAME
T he summer’s not over yet, but as school starts up again the end-of-summer finales and
reflection start. One of my favorite parts of the season is traveling across the section
to see our members in action. It’s motivating and inspiring… and makes me proud to
be a Gateway PGA member! Below are some highlights (and pictures on the next
page) of Foundation and Player Development initiatives over the past few months.
Drive Chip and Putt
Congratulations to the 16 junior golfers who qualified for the Regional Competition in
Kansas City, MO next month. Of these 16, nine of them are members of the Gateway Jr PGA
Program! Our local area is sending some very talented individuals to compete for a chance to move on to the
Finals at Augusta National next spring – great skill comes from great instruction.
PGA Junior League Golf
July wrapped up all local PGAJLG matches and brought attention to the Gateway PGA who increased its
participation by 1,000% from last year. Now well into All Star Matches, August will also bring the Gateway
Championship at Pheasant Run on Saturday, August 23rd. The winning All Star Team will then move on to
Oklahoma City in September for the Regionals. Good luck to all juniors and coaches!
Junior Development Tour
Thank you to all the Professionals and facilities who hosted a junior event this summer. In addition to the kids
truly enjoying their playing experiences at many of the area’s best facilities, connecting families with golf
opportunities built on a common understanding of what PGA Professionals and PGA Facilities mean is something
we strive for. The fall season ignites in September with another lineup of great facilities.
College Combine
The Third Annual College Combine amplified this year providing a platform for continued growth and
improvement in the coming years. 15 coaches representing 10 different colleges/universities attended, offering
advice during the morning session Coach’s Panel Discussion, observing skill assessments and on-course play in the
afternoon. An all-day format extended the previous ½ day format offering only skills assessments. Don
Gorin, PGA informed and entertained parents and over 50 high school golfers during his key note speech about
human performance and the important role it plays in the golf swing. Ed Schwent, PGA emceed the combine,
bringing his experience coaching elite high school golfers. Lastly, 6 other PGA Professionals deserve thanks for
their volunteerism and help during the Combine: Christian Becker, Dennis Biedenstein, Barbara Blanchar, Nic
Bunning, Sam Gilliland, and Rob Sedorcek. Already a success here, and the talk of other Sections across the
country, our College Combine will continue to grow educating juniors about college golf while displaying the
PGA Professional at the front of skill development and instruction.

Wow! What a busy and exciting last month we have had on the Gateway PGA Junior Tour. We have had events
almost every day and some days even events at 2 courses on the same day. Thanks again to all of the host courses
and their staff. Well we just wrapped up the season with our Tour Championships and we crowned some
champions in our 9 Hole Division, 18 Hole division and Tour Divisions and determined our Players of the year.
Please make sure you congratulate these young men and women when you see them around your clubs and
courses. They have worked hard all summer long and have achieved great success.
What a great season the Gateway PGA Junior Tour just finished up. Thanks again to all the courses that hosted
an event. I will be reaching back out to all about getting on the schedule for next season soon.
If you would like to host a Gateway Junior Tour event at your course we are always looking to add to our

U.S. Kids Golf will be presenting its day-long Certified Coach
Seminar in the Gateway Section on Tuesday, September 23 at
Bellerive Country Club. PGA Members attending the program receive
7 MSR credits for the day and an additional 2 MSR credits for
completing the optional online certification requirements.
Participating in a U.S. Kids Golf Certified Seminar enhances the
instructor’s knowledge of all aspects of youth golf that can utilized to
enhance his/her current programs or provide the basis for establishing
new offerings. This program aligns directly with Golf 2.0 initiatives and the PGA’s emphasis on Youth
and Family Golf. Areas of focus during the seminar include:
Analysis of Youth Golf Participation: Data will be shared showing how golf stacks up to other youth
sports and the commonalities found in those sports and opportunities that exist for golf.
Enhancing Current Junior Programs: Tools, resources, best practices and bringing “fun” to junior
programs through a games-based curriculum. The seminar features outdoor “live coaching” sessions to
demonstrate game-based learning and the implementation of a sequenced learning program to enhance
the student’s experience.
Equipment: Information on correct club length for a proper fit along with other important aspects of
club design to maximize success for both young golfers and their instructors will be presented.
Developing Swing Speed and Power: Proprietary research and information on swing speed develop-
ment and tools to help kids learn a golf swing at a young age that can last a lifetime will be shared.
Course Yardages: Research regarding proper length of course set up for players based on the length
they can achieve will be provided so that instructors will become experts in golf course setup and
yardages. Tailoring the course for young golfers will result in lower scores, encouraging more
rounds and increasing retention.
Presenters: John Godwin (PGA Master Professional and PGA National Junior Leader Award re-
cipient) and John Bryan (Vice President, U.S. Kids Golf Foundation and former PGA Section Exec-
utive Director)
The cost of the Certified Coach Seminar is $195 (early registration by September 9) or $245 (for
late registration.) This fee includes the day-long seminar at Bellerive Country Club, along with a
luncheon with roundtable discussions of best practices, online training and testing, U.S. Kids Golf
Book of Games and all seminar materials. Discounts are provided when more than one staff mem-
ber for a facility register together.

As you can imagine we had to deal with a lot of casual water at this year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla. The first
thing we had to do was make sure we had a place that players could drop when taking relief.
Since the rules do not make a distinction between fairway and rough we did not want a player
in the fairway to have to drop in the rough.
When the rain stopped all the landing areas were squeegeed. The chairman of the rules
committee then did a roll call. Each hole official verified that there were places in the fairway
where players could go for relief.
Once play resumed there were several requests for relief that were denied. Players would
walk or press down near their ball and water would come up. That water is not casual
water. The definition of casual water states "Casual Water is a temporary accumulation of water on the course that is
not in a water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes his stance".
Determining if casual water is present can be a two-step process. First observe the area where the ball lay and where
the stance will be taken and see if water is visible. If not then have the player take his stance. Once the players’ feet
are in position and not moving check the area again for visible water.
Three key factors. The water must be visible. It must be visible at one or both of the defined moments. The player
cannot take other actions to make the water visible.

Total of $65 million will be dedicated to growth of the
game, Section support and member programs.
The PGA of America Board of Directors gathered June
20, for its annual meeting held in conjunction with the
PGA Professional National Championship. In Myrtle
Beach, South Carolina, the Board reviewed a lengthy
agenda that PGA President Ted Bishop said, “reflects a
highly active and energetic organization that is committed
to examining many ways to further grow our game and
better serve all PGA Professionals.”
The meeting was highlighted by six key areas, which fol-
low:
FY2015 Budget Approved
The Board approved the Fiscal Year 2015 budget, which
runs from July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. Bishop
said the new review process for the PGA budget created a
level of transparency that is “clearly in the best interests
of all PGA Professionals.” The board approved $65 mil-
lion dedicated to growth of the game, Section support and
member programs. Among the key new initiatives in-
cluded in that figure are:
A $2.5 million increase in Section ADP funding, and
$1.35 million allocated for the redesign of
PGALInks.com and its relaunch as PGA.org
Redesign of Member Website Approved
PGA members have made it clear that PGALinks.com
was difficult to navigate, was disorganized, and with
17,000 components, presented competing priorities.

Employment “Chips”
Employment Chips! – Please enjoy this
“Gateway Employment Chips” section of
your email newsletter. Every month I will
be adding to the subjects of these “brief”
articles and hoping to inspire your thought
process regarding your employment and/or
your facility. Please use and expand on the
information to make your employment
more successful!
Are You Involved in an Annu-
al Review?
The importance of an annual
written review is paramount to your success at your
facility. Not only is it important for your employer to
understand your performance, but it is also important for
you to understand what your employer wants and how
they evaluate you as a part of the team. As we move
toward Labor Day and the golf season slowing down a
bit, it is time to start thinking about what you need to do
to prepare for your annual review. (If you have not had a
written annual review by your employer in the past, now
is the time to request it and get it planned out with your
employer.)
Here are a few items to consider when getting ready for
and how to excel at this annual event.
If your employer does not have a written format for a
review there is a great document available to you on
PGALinks for this purpose. You can get it by
clicking HERE.
Set up a date for this review or ask for this event to
happen. If you have not had one before, discuss the
review’s importance to the success of the facility for
your department.
Start by putting together all of your accomplishments
for the year in each aspect of the operations you are
responsible for or participate in as an employee. If
you have been using the Employer Communication
Plan found on PGALinks during the year, these
accomplishments should be easy to find.
Operational successes you were in charge of
or a part of
Staff accomplishments (if you are a manager
Customer service highlights – quotes or notes
from customers/members
Financial successes
Weather information for the year – pertaining
to the effects on the operation, good or bad.
To be fair and honest, you should also
consider making a list of challenges/problems
encountered during the year and if they were
resolved or are ongoing.
Create a list of all of your responsibilities and write
your own performance review of each one. Thinking
through what you have done will prevent you from
overreacting to feedback you receive in your meeting
with your employer.
Formulate your goals for the next year and also for
the facility in areas of importance to the employer.
Anticipate any negatives that may come up in the
review. Good preparation in this area will reduce any
anxiety. If you receive negative comments, do not be
confrontational. Rather, thank your employer for the
feedback and discuss ways to improve. Turn the
negative into a positive and turn this situation into
something better for the future.
When you receive positive feedback in the review,
you can use this as a springboard for something you
need or want. Build on the positive feelings by
stating you want to further excel in 2015. Share in
the prosperity and potential! Many times, great
performance reviews can lead to compensation and/or
benefits increases. Always remember to keep the
narrative aimed at the benefits that you provide to the
employer.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions
about this information or any other employment related
matters.

Brought To You by Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.
Golfers are always looking for new ways to improve their game. They first look at
improving physical aspects or purchasing better equipment or different ways to
stay attentive to the game. It is easy to lose focus in the game because you are
hitting bad shots or you have too much on your mind or the weather is too hot. It
is helpful to have techniques in your mental golf bag to help you stay on course
when you need them.
I find that if I lose focus my game goes downhill. A few weeks ago I played and it
was very slow play and a hot day. All I could think about was getting off the
course as quick as possible. If I had employed some of my mental fitness tech-
niques my game might have survived better.
Here are a few techniques to consider when your game gets off track:
If you have a golf routine – refine it – it can give tempo to your game.
Use your regular routine – go back to basics of the game.
Slow down your pace – it helps with concentration.
Focus on your breathing. Breathe slowly in and slowly out.
Keep your eye on the ball and pay attention to play.
Let your body relax as much as possible.
In between your play, keep your thoughts in a positive place by walking through the next shot in your
mind. Focusing on your next shot means thinking about club selection, golf stance, where you want
the ball to go next and how you want the ball to land.
Try the above steps in you next outing and see if it helps with concentration. Extraordinary Golf – the
Art of the Possible by Fred Shoemaker is a good book to review when your game
gets off track both mentally and physically. And, if you’d like to develop greater
flexibility, strength and balance for your golf game, contact Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.
