GATEWAY HARMONICA CLUB JULY – AUGUST 2016

A from Helen July/August

It’s hard to believe but the year is almost half over already. Of note we are already booking Gigs for December and at the last meeting it was voted to make December 10th our last

performance date due to everyone’s busy schedules.

We have had many positive comments about our new program selection of music. Most of the time the audience sings along which is great!

Due to so many people on vacation we have extended the vest/sweatshirt orders. Vests will be collected at the September meeting and orders will be taken at that time for the hooded sweatshirt.

Please write your name on the reverse side of the size tag on your vest. Printing may take about two weeks. Hooded sweatshirts, with the logo imprinted on the back can also be ordered for an approximate cost of $30.00. Order forms are at each meeting as is a catalogue showing the sweatshirt. Helen will also have a sample of the sweatshirt.

FYI this year we will not be having a “Christmas in July Party” at the church as we are having our annual picnic on Saturday, July 9th. Remember this is a family affair and it gives us a great opportunity to meet and socialize. Open Mike will also be available. Tasty food is always in abundance. Bring along your favorite dish to share and any meat that you would like to grill. Don’t forget to bring a “White Elephant” item if you have something you would like to contribute as a prize. I am sure there will be some well planned activities.

FYI – Bethesda Health Group has a very nice offer for anyone and it is FREE. Bethesda will send a Personal Emergency Medical Information Packet which provides vital information to emergency responders in the event the individual is unable to answer any questions regarding their health. It can be obtained by calling 314-800-1967 or at their website, www.BethesdaHealth.org/safety.

It is so nice to see our membership growing with several new members.

Editor's Note: Your editor apologizes for the tardiness of this newsletter making Helen’s note concerning

the picnic irrelevant, but the picnic was great and well attended. We probably had enough food for two picnics! Thanks to all who brought food and to Helen for organizing the attendance prizes.

The Solo Harmonica and I, by Mark Olesnicki I took piano lessons for about seven years when I was growing up. I enjoyed playing, but I was not great at it. I did learn to read music. I liked the sound of the harmonica, and used to look at the Hohner “Marine Band 1896” in stores. Finally, with the encouragement of my choir-director wife and clarinet-playing daughter, I bought one on my birthday, July 15, 2011. I got a few sounds out of it and tried to follow a basic instruction book. When the Fall 2011 St. Charles Community College catalog listed a three-session evening course I signed up. The instructor was Mary Ann Love, assisted by Herb Heubner. The harmonica provided was a twelve-hole, solo-tuned Huang diatonic. We learned to play scales and tunes, following the note pattern that used side-by-side C holes. I kept practicing on the Huang and also my Hohners (I had bought a D Special 20). A few months later I acquired a Hohner 364/24C MB Soloist, which played the same way as the Huang but sounded better. That Christmas I was able to play songs of the season for my tolerant family. For me, the solo-tuned harp was perfect for easy tunes. Of course, sharps and flats would require a chromatic. In the Summer of 2012 I started to attend GHC meetings and was amazed by the band and by the open mic talent. I bought a Golden Butterfly chromatic from the Club, and became a member. I practiced the chromatic so I could play with the band. I liked it, but found it (and the three other chromatics I now have) to be temperamental. They need to be warmed up, and at times require wind saver replacement and other maintenance. My Hohner MB Solo, in contrast, is always available to be picked up and played, and it fits in my pocket. Unfortunately, after 2013 the Club was no longer able to get the Huang Solo for our classes. Hohner Richter-tuned 10-hole BluesBand harps were the substitute, which required a change to the course materials. I have been teaching at SCCC with Ernie Roberts, and the change has not been a problem, in fact holes 1 – 3 enable students to try the Blues. However, those who want to progress after the course are limited until they buy a Chromatic or a solo-tuned harp. Chromatics are expensive, and the Hohner MB Soloist, while only costing about $50 is currently hard to get. Seydel makes a 10-hole solo, the Orchestra S, which I recently bought. Hole 1 is low G, followed by two octaves of C scale. It is OK, but my Hohner Soloist is still my favorite for casual playing. That is why you often see me at Open Mic playing a harmonica the is bigger than a ten-hole but smaller than a Chromatic. As a historical note, solo tuning was invented by William B. Yates of Alviso, California. He received a US Patent for it in 1907. Solo tuned diatonics were used by schools for music education in the 1920s and 30s. A Hohner ad from that time offers schools a dozen harmonicas for $10.80 (Soprano model) or $14.40 (Tenor).
