Dear Juniors and Parents,
On behalf of the Gateway Junior PGA, I want to wish everyone a happy holiday!
The 2012 golf season has come to a close and I want to thank all of our members
and their families for being a part of our program. We had a wonderful end to the
fall season finishing up at Annbriar and Winghaven. Recaps for these events can be
found on page 6 and 7. Thank you for helping make 2012 a fun and successful
year!
Since it is the holiday season you might wonder what to get that junior golfer on
your Christmas list? The Gateway Junior PGA offers the perfect present, a gift cer-
tificate for the Gateway Junior PGA. Not only will you be giving the gift of golf
but anyone who purchases a holiday gift certificate will be entered into a drawing
to win a summer of free golf! Please see page 2 for details.
Over the course of the year, I have had the opportunity to get to know our juniors
and their families. I want to thank everyone for making my first year with the pro-
gram so enjoyable! Along with getting to know the members of our program, I was
able to get to know what needs and desires our members have for the Gateway Jun-
ior PGA. With this being said, we have made three big changes to the overall tour-
nament program.
Our first change is moving The Gateway Junior PGA Mini/Novice 9 under our
PGA Foundation. By doing this, we are able to offer more instructional opportuni-
ties for the golfers that fall under this division. This will also help the juniors who
are just getting started with the game. Ali Wells explains this change in more detail
under her Growing the Game Junior Style Section of this month’s Newsletter.
The second change is that our traditional Tour Division will now consist of only
two-day events. Many members have been asking for more two-day, highly com-
petitive events so we decided to add twice as many compared to last season. These
tournaments will be nationally-ranked and even have the potential for AJGA per-
formance-based entry stars. Please visit the information page on the junior website
for all of the details. We will not be releasing the summer schedule until mid to late
January.
The final change is that 9-holers, 18-holers, and New Members will have to attend
a rules seminar to compete in the Summer Series tournaments. I understand that
some may see this as not beneficial or a waste of time. However, just know that at
one point I had to attend several rules seminars as a player for the Gateway Junior

The Gateway Junior PGA is happy to offer holiday gift certificates for our junior partici-pants. This is a perfect gift idea for that grandparent, relative or friend of the family that would like to help out with the upcoming junior golf season. Gift Certificates may be purchased in any denomination and can be redeemed for any membership registration fees or tournament fees once registration opens. You can purchase your certificates by contacting Melina Rinehart at [email protected] or (561) 624-8599. Additionally, we will put all of our juniors, who have a purchased gift certificate, into a drawing for a chance to win a summer season of free golf through the Gateway Junior PGA! Please note the free summer of golf does not include the final championship. The Gateway Junior PGA has updated the names of their junior memberships, they are listed below and more details will be available on the Gateway PGA Website in the near future. The costs and upcoming registrations
PGA in the past. As a tournament director, I attend a four-day workshop every year on the rules of golf. Therefore,
I can relate to not wanting to waste a Saturday on rules you have probably heard a thousand times. However, I am
asking our members to not only look at this as a rules seminar but as a pre-season meeting. This is an opportunity
to welcome new members, make sure that our members know the guidelines for the program, pick up registration
gifts, and refresh your memory on the rules of the game. I will do my best to make the rules section of the seminar
interactive and engaging. We will conduct them outside, this way golfers can live out the situations that arise on
the golf course. I also will do my best to schedule more seminars this season than last, to make it more convenient
for our members. It is my hope that players will truly see the value in knowing the rules because it can work great-
ly in their favor. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation on tightening the rules seminar requirements.
I am happy to answer any questions that the parents or juniors may have about the 2013 season. Please feel free to
contact me via email [email protected] or via phone at (636)-532-3355 x104 with any concerns you may
have. I know that 2013 will be a great year! Registration for the Spring opens January 2nd if you become a Mem-
ber PLUS so be sure to take advantage of early sign-up!
I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe, and happy holiday!
Sincerely,
Alex Anderson

In addition to the current five divisions of the Gateway Junior PGA program, elements will be added
to both the Mini and Novice 9 Divisions in an effort to create a stronger learning and development side
to young junior golf. Because of this, a distinct pathway leading juniors from development and growth
to competition will be created by offering stepping stone divisions concentrated on both age and abil-
ity. This article will describe some of the enhancements to these two divisions, but the important thing
to remember is that no element is being taken away, we are only adding on to the strong base already
built.
Overview
Mini 9, the entry-level division, is identified as the first golf experience most juniors will have. Boys
and girls age 5-8 are eligible to participate in this division. The mission is to introduce the game of
golf through instruction, on-course play, similar sports, and near-golf experiences. “Fun” is the key
emphasis! In this division, equipment is provided to all juniors in the form of SNAG Clubs, Ball, and
Tees. In addition to golf instruction and play, juniors will also be introduced to: safety, basic rules,
general course etiquette, and scorekeeping.
Novice 9, the next developmental division, is offered to those who may have started with Mini 9 and
continue to grow as a junior golfer. Traditional golf clubs are used, but with safety still being an im-
portant topic. Available for juniors age 5-12, Novice 9 golfers will still experience golf instruction,
course play, and near-golf experiences. The mission is to continue to offer golf opportunities that
grow with the age and ability of the junior. More importance is placed on the rules and scorekeeping
so juniors are ready to compete in nine-hole competitions when advancing to the next step: the 9 Hole
Division.
Juniors will not be required to start in the Mini 9 Division, however it is strongly encouraged for be-
ginner golfers and those still discovering the sport. Both Divisions continue to encourage parent in-
volvement, both in practice and on the golf course.
Particulars
Registering for the Mini or Novice 9 Divisions is the same process as in the past – visit our website
(www.gatewaypga.org/jrgolf) and sign up through Blue Golf. The membership fee Continued on the next page

remains the same ($75.00) and you will be registering as a “Mini and Novice 9 Member”. In addition, the event
fee will be lowered to $10.00 per event!
The Gateway PGA Staff understands the difficulty for parents who work traditional hours (Monday-Friday, 8am
to 5pm) to attend many of our Summer Series events, especially when juniors are too young to provide their own
transportation. In response to this issue, the Mini and Novice 9 Divisions are offering several Summer Series
events in the late afternoon/early evening during the week. We hope this allows for greater parent and family par-
ticipation. Keep your eyes open as the entire
Summer schedule will be released the last week of January.
Event Example
So, what will these new enhancements look like during a typical Mini or Novice 9 event? Below gives an idea of
the flow, activities, and timeframe:
8:00 am – Registration opens; Junior golfers check in
9:00 am – Youth clinic by host PGA Professional
9:30 am – Clinic finishes and juniors are broken into groups
9:40 am – Station rotation of PGA Sports Academy lessons and activities
10:10 am – Station rotation finishes and junior golfers (with parents) walk out to starting hole on golf course
10:15 am – On-course play begins (6 or 9 holes for Mini 9; 9 holes for Novice 9)
12:15 pm – Play ends; Awards
We are excited about the opportunities ahead for juniors of
all ages and abilities. Bringing these enhancements to the
Gateway Junior PGA program provides benefits to junior
golfers, parents, and families. Please do not hesitate to con-
tact us with any questions you may have as we constantly
work to improve the program valued by so many.
Merry Christmas and Happy Golfing!

‘See’ Success: Visualize Your Golf Game When we talk about strategies for improving golf
performance, the focus is often on exercise, nutrition
and stress management. However, we can’t ignore
the power of the mind. Working together, your mind
and body are a powerful team for enhancing your
game.
It’s a rather simple, but important strategy: After set-
ting reasonable cardio, strength and flexibility goals,
visualize what results when you achieve these goals
– a stronger golf swing, for example.
In her book titled, Winning by Losing, Jillian
Michaels writes, “Having and keeping a vision of
the future affects your behavior and actions now.”
She also notes that, “It is not about wishing for
something to happen, it is about using your mind’s
eye to literally see the thing you wish to accom-
plish.”
Ali Vincent used this technique to accomplish her
goals. Vincent was the first female contestant to win
on The Biggest Loser television show. Along with
visualizing her body losing weight, she visualized
stepping on the scale the final night and having con-
fetti falling on her head as she was deemed the win-
ner.
In his book, Golf My Way, Jack Nicklaus wrote: “I
never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having
a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. It’s
like a color movie. First I ‘see’ the ball where I want
it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on
bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes
and I ‘see’ the ball going there: its path, trajectory
and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there
is sort of a fade-out, and the next scene shows me
making the kind of swing that will turn the images
into reality.”
In the book Psycho-Cybernetics, author Dr. Maxwell
Maltz wrote this interesting assessment:
“Experimental and clinical psychologists have
proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the human
nervous system cannot tell the difference between an
‘actual’ experience and an experience imagined viv-
idly and in detail.”
When you visualize proper training—and see your-
self accomplishing goals—you have a greater oppor-
tunity to improve your golf performance. To be suc-
cessful in this technique, make sure you stay positive
and start with realistic goals. If you would like
coaching to learn how to visualize and practice your
goals, contact Barb Michael at 314-984-0592.
