This past summer, I wasfortunate to attend the 119thContinental Congress. There Iwitnessed the changing of theguard. Mrs. Calvinsadministration bid us farewelland President General MerryAnn Thompson Wright wasinstalled as our new PresidentGeneral. Missouri can be proudfor our very own, Sally Buenowho now serves as the NationalCorresponding Secretary.

Each administration hasits own unique style and focus.The goals of the WrightAdministration are to strengthenmembership, improve financialstability and increase awareness

of DAR objectives and programs.

Saturday, August 8 th, Iattended the Chapter RegentsWorkshop at Roslyn Heights.There were 75 Chapter Regentsfrom all over the State! Our newly elected State Regent,

Donna Green Nash introducedus to the new State Board. Wecan also be very proud andhappy for our Chapters veryown Patsy West who is theState Vice-Regent.

Donna Nashs newadministration, like that of Merry Ann Wrights, also

brings with it a fresh, newfocus. The theme of our newState Administration is Catchthe Glow! Our scripture verseis Mathew 5:16 Let the lightso shine before others that theymay see your good works andglorify their Father who is inheaven. Out State Motto isA smile is Gods gentle Light.

Now, what does thislook like to us at the Chapter level? In the spirit of our President Generals wishes,this year we will be focusingour energies on increasingmembership. We have in placea Big Sister-Little Sister Program for new members.

This is a fun way to volunteer,welcome new members andmake new DAR friendships.Id also like to ask you to

become a spokesperson for DAR. Do you have a copy of our DAR handbook, KnowYour DAR? You can get one

from our Membership Chairman,Eileen Hacker. Try carrying it inyour purse when you go out.You never know who you will bemeeting!

Our Chapter is fortunateto be financially stable with afine investment portfolio. If anyof you have any ideas of raising

money for our Chapter, State and National programs, Id love tohear from you. Let me know!Remember: the more we have,the more we can give!

Nancy Hardgrove and Nancy Mange have put together an interesting and diversecollection of programs for thisyear. Invite a friend, be sure tostay and enjoy the fun!

President General's ProjectIn 2010 an update of the extensive conservation assessment done in 2005 of our headquarters identified

the next phases of repairs and restoration work needing to be accomplished on our beautiful complex of three buildings over the next six years. The President General's Project, "Preserve the Past, Enhance the Present,Invest in the Future," was approved by the National Board of Management on July 11, 2010, and will be ratified

by Congress in 2011. Work will begin immediately on addressing these additional needs at our NSDAR national headquarters in Washington, D.C.In addition to this historic preservation our own buildings, securing new members and education and

training for members and current leaders will comprise a second facet of the President Generals Project. Thethird goal of the administration, to increase awareness of DAR objectives and programs, will provide grants inlocal communities to support initiatives that promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

The criteria for nominating such a teacher is as follows: the individual must have taughtAmerican History, full-time, in a public, private or parochial school during the academic years 2009-2011 in the St. Louis area; they must foster a spirit of patriotism and loyal support of our countryand constitutional government; and they must demonstrate the ability to relate history to modernlife and events, require excellence from students at all times and be committed to his/her studentsand enjoy good rapport with them.

Barbara Wilson is the Director of the Army/ Navy/Marine Corps Programs for Training Systems& Services (TSS), a division of the Global Systems& Services Business Unit of Boeing Defense, Space& Security that provides the full range of military

and government training and mission planningsystemsolutions for domestic andinternationalcustomers.Wilsonsresponsibilitiesinclude theleadership,

growth andexecution of the

programswithin the Army/Navy/Marine Corps subdivision of TSS, which includes the F/A-18, P-8A, T-45, V-22,Apache, and Chinook platforms, for both domesticand international customers.

Prior to this position, Wilson was on a ten-month special assignment in Washington, D.C.representing The Boeing Company as an Industry

Fellow at National Defense Universitys IndustrialCollege of the Armed Forces (ICAF). In June,Wilson received her masters degree in nationalresource strategy. ICAF prepares future leaders of the armed forces and other civilian agencies for high-level policy, command and staff responsibilities.

Since joining Boeing in1996, Wilson hasheld a variety of

progressivelysenior roles infinance, supplier management and

programmanagement.She was Director and Program

Manager for Boeing Military Aircrafts T-45Training System Program, and Program Manager for the T-38 Avionics Upgrade Program. Leading upto these senior leadership roles, Wilson served aschief of staff to the president and CEO of Boeing

Defense, Space & Security.Wilson

also holds a bachelorsdegree in

businessadministration,with aconcentration inmanagement,

from AuburnUniversity. Shehas also earned

masters degrees in business administration andcomputer resources and information managementfrom Webster University.

A native of St. Louis, Wilson participatesactively in her community as a member of the boardof directors for the St. Louis Zoo Association andthe board of directors for St. Johns Mercy

Foundation. She serves as the Boeing executivefocal to Tuskegee University and is a graduate of the2007-2008 FOCUS Leadership St. Louis programand alumni of Defense Acquisition University.

Wilson also serves as a member of theBoeing St. Louis Leadership Association andBoeing Women in Leadership. She participates as amentor for the Mathew-Dickey Boys & Girls Cluband volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters. In2006, Wilson received the Women of Color inTechnology Professional Achievement Award, anationally recognized industry-wide honor. InAugust 2009, Wilson was named one of St. LouisMost Influential Business Women by the St. LouisBusiness Journal. The award recognizes remarkablewomen who excel in their careers and in servingtheir communities. Her accomplishments were alsofeatured in the August 2009 issue of St. LouisWoman Magazine .

THE BOOK NOOK: The Brother Gardeners: Botany, Empire and Obsession , by Andrea Wulf A book written about the passion and determination of a small group of eighteenth

century naturalists who made Britain a nation of gardeners and center of thehorticultural world. A garden revolution that took place during the AmericanRevolution.

In 1733, an American farmer, John Bartram sent seeds, roots, and tender plantsfrom the American colonies at the request of a successful London cloth merchant, Peter Collinson. These were American plants that were not found in Britain. These trees,shrubs and flowers were to transform Britain into what we think of it today, a gardennation.

The friendship of these two men that developed and persisted over 35 years duringthe stormy period of the American Revolution is as intriguing as any spy novel. Wulf gives an interesting and provocative portrayal of such botany greats such as Carl

Linnaeus, Joseph Bank and Daniel Solander. Their adventures and escapades make this book a great summer read. One I couldnt put down!

Andrea Wulf was born in India and moved to Germany as a child. She trained as a design historian at Londons Royal College of Art.She regularly appears on BBC Television and radio. She is an exceptionally intelligent writer.

WOMAN IN AMERICAN HISTORYNominations for are being accepted for the 2011 NSDAR Woman in American History award, honoring

outstanding women, past and present, in American History.To be eligible for this award, the nominee must be a woman who has made a contribution or a

difference in the community; she can be a historical entity or currently alive and worthy of recognition; has been or are intellectual, educational, social, religious, political , scientific or cultural innovators. Nominations need to be submitted to the Chapter Historian by January 1, 2011

T he Chapter Historian is working on gathering any documents, pictures or memorabilia pertaining to the St. Louis Chapter, Jefferson Chapter or

St. Louis-Jefferson Chapter activities and projects. Please contact her regarding any items

you have or may know about.

The St. Louis-Jefferson Chapter is happy towelcome the DAR Museum Gift Shoppes Trunk Show.The Trunk Show will be on display before and during theDecember 20th Chapter. Many lovely items, includingscarves, mens ties, jewelry, ceramics, stationary, booksand toys will be on display and available for sale. Mark your calendar and plan on coming early. The proceedswill support the DAR Museum in Washington, D.C.

The DAR Museum is comprised of 31 period rooms and 2 galleries. The collectionconsists of over 30,000 decorative and fine artsobjects spanning the 18th and 19th centuries,including furniture, glass, ceramics, textilesand silver. The Museum offers free walk-intours, free exhibitions, and several interesting

programs for all ages. There are many ways tocontribute to the DAR Museum and support its

IN REMEMBRANCE

Alice Clifford Smith November 21, 1916 - July 12, 2010

Alice Smith passed away peacefully at the age of 93 at Peace HavenAssociation. She was a beautiful person in all ways; bright, caring, awonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, professionaland volunteer. She was an active member of DAR and much beloved byher DAR sisters.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Church of ChristScientist Town & Country or Peace Haven Association.

DONATIONS FOR BACONE COLLEGE NEEDEDAmerican Indian Committee Chairman, Eileen Hacker will be collecting monetary donations and

school supplies for Bacone College in Muskogee, OK. Donations will be collected at the September, October,and November meetings to be sent around Thanksgiving. Each donor will receive a gift of thanks, a traditional

Native American custom. Some of the supplies needed are markers, mechanical pencils, tape, scissors, andglue sticks.

Bacone College is a four-year liberal arts college embracing an historic educational mission withAmerican Indians.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton and others first seriously proposedwomens right to vote at Seneca Falls, N.Y., on July 19, 1848. Prior to thistime, Susan B. Anthony was active in the womens temperance movement.When she met Stanton in 1851, they joined forces and worked together over the next half of the century. Although they both died before their goalwas reached, they lived long enough to see significant progress and were

primarily responsible for the ultimate success.Carrie Chapman Catt, founder and early leader of the League of

Women Voters, younger than Anthony and Stanton, entered the strugglelater and became a leader in the suffragist movement that helped lead it to victory. On August 26, 1920, the

Secretary of State signed the proclamation enacting the 19th amendment giving womenthe right to vote.

In honor of the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment, the YWCA Metro St.Louis is hosting a Womens Equality Day Rally on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at thePhyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, 2711 Locust, St. Louis, MO 63103, just west of Jefferson Avenue. The event will begin at 4:30 p.m and will end by 6:30 p.m. As atribute to the suffragettes, the YWCA is inviting everyone to wear an all-white attireand hat. Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of Eleanor Roosevelt and VicePresident of Global Corporate Citizenship for the Boeing Company, will be giving akeynote address. Sarah Schoen , a new junior member, is the granddaughter of member Geraldine (Gerry) Schoen. She graduated fromRockwood Summit High School this past June and currentlyresides with her parents in Fenton. She will be attending MissouriState University at Springfield this fall, where she has alreadymade color guard.

Barbara (Bobbie) Brown joined us in April. Bobbiereceived her degrees from Smith College and Yale University. Shetaught at Washington University and was a Researcher with theCori Laboratory and retired some years ago. Bobbie has threechildren and three grandchildren. As members of the InternationalOrchid Society, she and her husband have traveled throughout theworld. She and her husband live inClayton.
