AS SOON AS THE LEAVES START TO TURN, MY THOUGHTS TURN TO THE SEASONAL HOLIDAYS. Yes, some folks look forward to sweaters, and wood smoke, and hot apple cider. I look forward to the get togethers and activities, because they give me another opportunity to get my Garnish on with those I love most!

Sorry if that sounds a little self-promotional. But the truth is that Garnish was founded because nothing makes me happier than bringing a sparkle to the eye (except maybe hugs from my kids) of someone I care about! I just adore taking something ordinary, like the games cabinet we feature in one of this issue’s stories, and turning it into something truly special.

But even with all the Garnish goodies at my disposal, I still share many of the same challenges as you. I’m a too-busy mom. I can wield a mean glue gun but I’m far from a pro at styling. And I still have to do it all on a budget. I just don’t want to sacrifice the pretty!

THAT’S WHY THIS ISSUE OF GARNISH IS DEDICATED TO MAKING THE TIME TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON IN OUR USUAL EASY, DON’T SWEAT IT STYLE. I often hear from readers things like “Oh, I loved that story in the magazine but I don’t have the talent to put together something like that.”

While I may disagree (you CAN do it, you know!), it did make me say “hmmmm.....” The result? The Garnish team put on our

collective thinking cap and came up with not one, not two, but three kits that will add a dash of seasonal spice and fun to your holiday activities.

This is our first time offering kits like these and I can’t wait to see if you love them as much as we do. We’re already dreaming up ideas for 2014... let us know what you’d like to see and we’ll see if we can make it happen!

HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, WE’RE JUST ABOUT FOUR WEEKS FROM THANKSGIVING. It’s a big holiday in our family. Grandparents and brothers and aunts and uncles and cousins and nieces and nephews gather for a big feast and while it might be a bit chaotic, it’s also perfection.

This year, I’ll be taking a quiet moment in the middle of all the madness to look around me and give thanks for the love that binds us all together.

I wish the same for all of you.

With thanks for you, our readers and customers... Garnish wouldn’t be Garnish without you!

[ and our mouths are officially watering! ]

here’s a fresh idea for showcasing all

the sweet treats of autumn.

it’s a you-can-do-it-too before and after!

Page 7: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

clockwise, from top left 1. Any get together is twice as fun when a game is

involved. We went turkey hunting (more to come on that)! 2. We’d love to tell you

we baked it all ourselves from scratch, and you could! But we used high-quality store

bought pastry and pie makings, and baked up a variety of mini pies in our Patty Cake

baking cups. Adorable and delicious! 3. A vintage-style cake stand and fabric leaves

from the craft store add a little seasonal atmosphere to the display. 3. And this is where

the magic happened. We took our games cabinet, cleared the shelves, and had some fun.

(Turn the page to see how!)

1. On the top shelf we stashed our Turkey Huntin’ supplies. We took an old frame,

popped out the photo (don’t worry, we put it back in after our celebrations!), popped

in the Turkey Huntin’ rules, and set out the kit. When it was time to burn off some of

those Thanksgiving calories (and send the overly-energetic kids outdoors), we grabbed

the kit and set up the hunt, easy as you please. Our guests loved it, and we think we’ve

got a new Thanksgiving tradition!

2. Our desserts are all abou the tastes of Autumn. We already talked about our almost-

homemade pies (hey, we did bake them!). Now let’s talk about the push pops. We had

so much fun putting these together. Some are fruit cocktail layered with vanilla

pudding. Others are filled with savory pumpkin pie filling. You could fill them with

trifle ingredients, or tiramisu fillings... or whatever strikes your fancy. Our push pops

make them fun to eat, and clean up... well, what clean up?

and here’s the cabinet “after”...

[ hmmm... we might have to keep it this way!]

Page 9: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

3. It doesn’t matter how tasty your dinner or dessert buffet is. There are bound to be

leftovers. Encourage your guests to take home some sweet treats for themselves. It’s

insta-dessert for another day, and a great time-saver for busy moms over the holiday

season. We packed our shelf with our lidded deli containers and our hinged clear

containers. Plus we filled a cuppa with permanent makers. Our guests were able to

claim their treats, mark the containers, and leave them by the front door for easy

takeaway as they left. Oh, and less clean up for us. We love it!

4. On the bottom shelf (last but most certainly not least) we stashed more takeaway

supplies (these are our Good to Go take-out boxes) and a bucket full of mixed cutlery.

The knives and forks stayed with us, but the boxes were filled with leftovers. You could

also use this space to stash extra napkins, plates, wet-naps for little spills... even tooth-

picks. Making it all seasonally festive are some inexpenive gourds from the market and

some fabric leaves from the craft shop. Easy peasy!

Page 10: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

We are so excited to introduce our Turkey Huntin’ kits. This is our Easter egg hunt-meets bingo-meets-Thanksgiving mashup game. Hide the paper turkeys. Give the players their huntin’ cards (they’re looking for only the turkeys on their numbered playing card) and send them outside (or around the house if the weather is “fowl”—sorry, we coudn’t help ourselves) to burn off some Thanksgiving calories. This is a game the whole family can play. Sounds fun, right? We think so. We even made a poem!

It’s time to hide those turkeys, scatter near or far.Perhaps they’ll hold onto a coin or rest upon a candy bar.A goodie bag may wait with some or just a special few,Choice is yours it’s up to you - it’s all in what you want to do.Now gather up your turkey hunters, it’s time to start the fun.Divvy up the playing cards and they’ll see just how it’s done.Hunting only for those turkeys on their card in a row,Turkey hunters here are there with all their loot in tow!

Turkey Huntin’ kits will be on sale for $24.99. You’ll get eveything you need for 10 hunters: turkeys, playing cards, and the Turkey Huntin’ poem.

You can find the kits in the store, here.

Let’s see, how many ways could we see our Autumn s’more packs in action? Set up on the back porch for a treat after a massive leaf clean up? Toted along to Friday night’s sport game of choice? Handed out after Saturday hockey practice? Packed in the car for your mom group walk? Really, we don’t need an excuse. Just some simple ingredients, a little Garnish, and we’re good to go!

WHAT WE PACKED• apple cider donuts (but any donut will do!)• a mix of mini marshmallows, caramel popcorn and plain and chocolate-covered pretzels (store-bought but mixed by hand)• apple cider

OUR GARNISHES• Our mix is stashed in one of our cardboard take-out boxes, and scooped into a wood cone for snacking. We packed our

donuts in a berry box lined with our FDA waxed tissue paper. Apple cider was poured into our small plastic bottle. We punched a hole in the lids and popped in our birch paper straws.

SWEET TREATS NOT YOUR THING? WE’RE DOWN WITH THAT! Replace the sweet mix with a savory one (like Chex), and swap the donuts with deli sandwiches. The cider, though, we’re not budging on that! It’s an Autumn essential.

keep ‘em asking for s’moreWe have a confession. We were so in love with the s’mores we featured in the Summer issue of the magazine that we decided to keep the s’more goodness going all Autumn long. And so we present s’mores 2.0. They may not be your traditional ooey-gooey treat, but they will have everyone asking for s’more! And that’s the point, right?

[ it’s an all season treat! ]

spread a little boo this halloween?Who says secret admiring should be confined to Valentine’s Day? Not us! We’re big fans of making that certain someone smile any time of the year. But you don’t have to keep the boo-ing to someone you’re wooing. They’re great for school Halloween parties, or teacher thank yous, or postman treats, or a leave behind for your hairstylist. And the best part? It’s a Garnish kit!

[ it’s a not-too-scary surprise! ]

Page 15: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

thinkgarnish.com Autumn • 15

here’s what you’ll get in your kit

[ honestly, it’s scarily simple!]

This is the second kit we’re introducing for Autumn 2013 and, well, we think it’s spook-tacular!

(Sorry. We have a thing for cheesy puns.)

As we said on the blog, Itsy Bitsy Spider climbed the water spout to shout “Boo!” Not boo as in Honey Boo-Boo. Nor as in “How’s it going, Boo?.

We’re talking the good ol’ fashioned, scary but fun...Boo! And the best part? We’ve garnished the Garnish into Boo Kits.

What’cha get:

• 6 medium cello bag with custom label attached

• 6 pieces of black and white twine• 6 custom made boo cards with spider

adornment• instruction card for “booing” including

our boo mix treat!

You can keep the boo cards together with the bags or you can use the treat bags for your child’s class or party and use the cards for a bucket of candy. The choice is all yours.

Boo Kits are on sale now for $5.99. Find them in the store, here.

just pack & boo: it

it’s a cookie competition swapOK, technically they’re called cookie swaps, and they’re all in good fun and the spirit of sharing. We get it. If you and your friends can

keep it on that level, our hat is off to you! However, when we particpate in a cookie swap, well, we can’t help measuring our baked

goodies against those of our friends. Who has the tastiest cookie? The prettiest cookie? The most creative cookie? It’s just a little

holiday-spirited competition. And that’s what inspired our third kit for Autumn 2013: the cookie swap. We are thrilled to share it with

you. Here’s a peek at what you’ll get.

Page 17: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

thinkgarnish.com Autumn • 17

here’s what’s in the kit:

• 10 boxes - 5 white and 5 kraft squat gable boxes• 10 labels - 5 white and 5 kraft oval labels all dressed up• 20 lengths of twine (10 red and 10 green)• one set of pre-cut cookie awards

HOW IT WORKSA cookie swap is pretty simple. You bake a couple dozen or so cookies. And so do several of your friends. You get together. You share. You taste. You compare. And you each mix and match a couple dozen or so cookies to take home. It’s a great way to learn about others’ traditional holiday recipes and traditions. And enjoy a little friendly competition along the way.

WHAT’ YOU’LL DO You can pre-assemble the kits before your swap. Simply fold the award cards. Fold up the gable boxes, and pop a piece red and green twine in each. Set the label sheets on the table with the boxes. When the time comes to choose coookies for taking home, each of your friends can fill her box, tie it with twine and secure with a label.

Cookie Swap kits will be on sale for $24.99. And you can find them in the store, here.

show yourteam spirit

[ really, the food is our favorite part of the game! ]

Staying home for the big game? Who says you have to forgo the tailgate? Or the concession

stand? Or the team rivalries? Not us!

Page 19: Garnish fall 2013 10 15 13

thinkgarnish.com Autumn • 19

clockwise, from top left 1. We decided this

“tailgate” was going to be all about the concession

stand. So we served up hotdogs and nachos with

cheese sauce. And chili. And sour cream. And jalapenos.

So, so good! Our chipboard bowls and containers lend

that authentic concession stand touch. Our kraft ripple

bowls are perfect for chili. And our wood boats are just

the thing for the ‘dogs. We stashed wooden cutlery in a

basket with napkins (lots of napkins!), and we set out

cups and sleeves for drinks. 2. For a fun touch,

we used a Sharpie to label our wooden spoons. Not

that we thought our guests wouldn’t know the

difference between the cheese and the sour cream.

But we definitely wanted to keep the sour cream from

mixing with the jalapenos! 3. Is there any occasion

that we can’t garnish with a little clip art? Honestly?

We don’t think so! We had a blast designing this little

poster. We popped it in a dollar store frame (no costly

glass to break!) and put it on the table. When the

tailgatin’ was done, we used the frame for our Turkey

Huntin’ poem. It was a two-fer! 4. Here’s a great

idea to encourage a little guest participation in your

at-home tailgate. Before your party, ask each guest

for their favorite college football team. Is it their alma

mater? Or do they love the team for another reason?

Then Google some sports team trivia and, using your

trusty Sharpie, write it on our cardboard cup sleeves.

When your guests arrive, offer them a paper cup to

decorate with their team colors, and then have each

take a sleeve. They’ll have fun testing each other with

the trivia!
