PROJECT FISH and CHICKS with GARNISH

David Vanderpool,MD, founder and CEO of Mobile Medical Disaster Relief (MMDR), quickly mobilized a medical team upon hearing the news of the earthquake. The team headed to Haiti on January 14, 2010. MMDR, a 501(C)(3) humanitarian organization, provides basic goods and medical services to the poor of this world through the building and/or funding of medical clinics or hospitals. In large scale disasters we provide “first responder” medical and logistical support. Between disasters, MMDR implements micro-enterprise projects, provides clean water initiatives, develops vocational schools, and maintains the goal of building and/or funding at least one hospital or clinic per year. We are presently in fourteen world-wide locations including Haiti, Honduras, Mozambique, Nigeria, India, China, Ukraine, Iraq, Kenya, Gaza, Peru, Guatemala, and the United States. MMDR is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of business and civic leaders who are active in the ongoing work of the organization.

Simply stated, Haiti has become a nation embroiled in a vicious cycle of dependency through an unstable environment and governmental system. A culture of entitlement survival has unfortunately been commonly observed in the Haitians, but now is a perfect time to begin a future of independent sustainability for Haitians stemming from their resilient, determined spirit.

Over 80% of Haitians are unemployed, and many basic needs such as housing, proper nutrition, clean water, and healthcare urgently need to be met. As these critical needs are being addressed by agencies such as ours, the economic infrastructure to sustain these needs should be developed as well. This is an opportune time to prepare sustainable projects and to train the Haitians to build an economy that will allow them to live independently rather than dependently. The Haitians will be able to develop a sense of pride and purpose. The hopelessness that enshrouds the country will turn to hope and a future.

MMDR!S GOAL

MMDR has initiated successful micro-enterprise projects in other areas of the world. Our "Handbags of Hope! project has moved over 400 Mozambican widows and their children out of poverty and abuse into healthy livelihoods. We have the experience to help people in Haiti. An urgency we observe each month as we give medical care in and around Port-au-Prince is the profound need for proper nutrition. Starvation is claiming lives in Haiti as over one million Haitians have been displaced from their homes. Some of the most unfortunate are the children who have lost parents. Many of the children are left wandering the streets. MMDR has been able to locate and place a number of these children in orphanages during our mobile medical clinics.

A need exists in the orphanages to provide adequate nutrition, especially protein, to the children. Another desire is to have resources to provide other basic needs for the children such as clothing and school supplies. MMDR!s goal is to initiate several sustainable interdependent micro-enterprise projects that will alleviate these needs as well as contribute to the Haitian economy.

MMDR is proposing to build a tilapia farm, chicken egg coop, and vegetable garden at several orphanage locations so the protein needs of children will be met and so that income can be realized for other orphanage needs through the selling of excess fish and eggs to outside sources.

TILAPIA AQUACULTURE PROJECTS (FISH)

The tilapia project has direct social benefits on many levels. Children will be fed protein daily. Children and others can develop self-worth and a work ethic from participating in the ongoing work of the project. As the children become adults, their full potential can be realized as they take knowledge and skills to the society at large. The economy will be stimulated through sales of excess product and other needs for the children at the orphanage such as clothing and school supplies

can be met.

CHICKEN EGG PROJECTS (CHICKS)

Continuing with the same justifications put forth with respect to the Tilapia Aquaculture Project, MMDR wants to utilize egg-laying hens to supply protein and income for the orphanage. Our goal is to provide an egg for each child in the orphanage daily. The eggs will be able to accomplish many of the same objectives as the aquaculture project, but an additional benefit will be the utilization of chicken manure as a monthly application to the tilapia pond to encourage the growth of algae. Egg shells will be composted.

VEGETABLE GARDEN PROJECTS (GARNISH)

To round out the children!s diets, we will plant a vegetable garden in a plot of land near the tilapia pond and chicken coop. The garden will utilize chicken manure and decomposing fish as fertilizer. The children will delight in learning how to cultivate,

pick, and eat the nutritious vegetables. The plant remnants will be composted.

PROJECT FISH and CHICKS with GARNISH - METHODOLOGY

• In August, 2010, an MMDR employee will purchase supplies and hire 10 Haitians to spend approximately two weeks building a 15m x 20m x 2m cement block fence to house a tilapia, chicken, and garden compound on the grounds of Children of Hope Orphanage in Thomazeau, Haiti. This orphanage houses approximately 42 children.

• Using this first project as a model, nine other orphanage locations in and around Port-au-Prince Haiti will be designated as MMDR Fish and Chicks with Garnish sites.

• The chicken coop will be installed first, with the tilapia pond built several months later, followed by the planting of a garden in the spring. The time line on the first FCG project is approximately 10 months. Other FCG project sites may overlap this time frame.

• A prebuilt chicken coop and 50 chickens will be purchased and placed on the east side of the compound.

• Training for the care of the chickens will be delivered by MMDR to the orphanage staff and residents. Weekly progress visits will be made by MMDR to assure operational efficacy.

• Eggs that are not used at the orphanage will be sold, and the profits will buy chicken feed and new chickens, since the productivity cycle for egg layers is approximately 8 months.

• Approximately two months following the full operation of the chicken coop, MMDR will purchase supplies, hire 10 Haitians, and begin construction on the tilapia pond. An estimated time for construction and conditioning of the pond is one month.

• The pond will be stocked with approximately 30 tilapia fingerlings once the water is conditioned and ready to support fish life. The remaining 70 fingerlings will be introduced to the pond gradually.

• Training for the care of the tilapia pond as well as harvesting techniques will be delivered by MMDR to the orphanage staff and residents. Weekly progress visits will be made by MMDR to assure operational efficacy.

• In the Spring of 2011, a garden will be prepared by MMDR and orphanage residents using compost, decomposing fish, and chicken manure.

• Seeds and seedlings will be purchased and planted.

• Training for care of the garden as well as harvesting instructions will be delivered by MMDR to the orphanage staff and residents. Residents will be responsible to care for, harvest, and enjoy eating the garden produce.

• Project FCG will be initiated in other orphanage locations as lessons are learned and successes are celebrated at Children of Hope Orphanage.

IN SUMMARY

Project “Fish and Chicks” will begin to build and sustain healthy, productive lives, increase the orphanages! abilities to serve their children, and contribute to economic growth in Haiti. The cycle of poverty in Haiti will be broken through the development of small enterprises like this one that will equip individuals in Haiti with a new paradigm of worthiness and self-sufficiency. Families and the economy at large will be stimulated as this sustainable pattern takes root and people embrace a focus toward a viable, independent future.
