Weekly Schedule (Subject to change)

MSU’s Last Game -- MSU 67, Washington 81 (12/30/08-Seattle, Wash.)SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) - Freshman guard Isaiah Thomas scored a career-high 27 points and Jon Brockman grabbed the 1,000th rebound of his career Tuesday night as Washington extended its winning streak to seven, beating Morgan State 81-67.

Senior center Brockman, who sat out nearly 11 minutes of the second half after picking up his fourth foul with 16:55 left in the game, added 18 points for the Huskies (9-3). He fi nished the night with fi ve

rebounds, giving him 1,004. He is within 47 rebounds of the all-time Washington career record of 1,051 set by Doug Smart from 1957-59.

Reggie Holmes led Morgan State (5-8) with 16 points. Jermaine Bolden had 15 points, and Marquise Kately chipped in 14.

FLASHBACK - MSU at Maryland (Dec. 27, 2007)COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Eric Hayes led fi ve Terps in double-fi gure scoring as Maryland pulled away in the second half against Morgan State , 89-65, at the Comcast Center before 17,950 fans. The loss dropped the Bears’ record to 4-4 (1-0 MEAC) while Maryland improved to 6-3.

Morgan State entered the contest shorthanded in the backcourt as a result of injuries, as starting point guard Jerrell Green (ankle sprain) and Jermaine Bolden (shoulder) watched the game from the Bears’ bench. As a result, junior forward Marquise Kately took over the point guard position.

Kately played the entire game and fi nished with just three turnovers, however his off ensive produc-tion struggled as he completed the game shooting 2-for-15 from the fi eld and scored a season-low with fi ve points.

Sophomore guard Reggie Holmes led the Bears with a game-high 20 points with six rebounds and three steals, while Jamar Smith added 16 points including seven boards and four assists. Boubacar Coly fi nished just shy of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Maryland employed tough full court pressure and got baskets by James Gist to help the Terps jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Gist fi nished the game with 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. The Bears seemed to gain confi dence as the game continued and rallied.

Smith scored the Bears’ fi rst basket to help spark a 13-5 run over the next six minutes as the Bears took advantage of careless Terps turnovers and poor shooting. An Adrian Bowie turnover led to a powerful dunk by Smith over Greivis Vasquez to knot the ballgame at 13 with 10:11 remaining in the half.

Morgan State would go on to take a 27-25 lead at the 3:39 mark after an alley-oop dunk by Smith to Kately, followed by a layup by Gene Johnson as Terps fans grew restless.

Maryland fi red back with an 11-4 run. In the fi nal seconds of the half Vasquez drove the lane and had his shot blocked twice. Maryland head coach Gary Williams felt Vasquez was fouled on the play and threw his jacket to center court before storming off the court in disgust. The Terps’ bench was assessed a technical foul as they went into the locker room with a 36-29 halftime lead.

The second half was dominated by the Terps who continued to put pressure on Morgan State’s tiring squad.

Two three-pointers by Hayes pushed the score to 44-33, and Vasquez nailed another three-pointer to increase the lead to 47-35 as the Terps never looked back.

Holmes Selected MEAC Player of the Week (Dec. 14, 2008)Junior guard Reggie Holmes of Morgan State University was selected as the Mid-East-ern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending December 14, 2008. Holmes (G, 6-4, 185, Jr., Baltimore, Md.) recorded 29 points and six rebounds in the Bears win over DePaul. He connected on 9-of-21 baskets including 5-for-9 from behind the 3-point arc in MSU’s fi rst victory over a member of the Big East. He also added two steals and one blocked shot in the victory.

Bear ScheduleMorgan State’s non-conference schedule for the 2008-09 season will once again be very challenging. The schedule will include match-ups against LaSalle, Ole Miss, DePaul, Utah, Manhattan, Maryland, St. Mary’s. The Bears took on UMBC in their home-opener at Hill Field House.

Non-Conference ScheduleMorgan State will play on the road for all but one of their non–conference games. The 2008-09 season will start in Philadelphia with LaSalle (11/15) followed by a trip to Riverdale, NY to face Manhattan (11/19). The Glenn Wilkes Classic will be held in Daytona Beach, FL (11/21-23) and the Bears will play Marshall, Utah and Wisconsin-Green Bay. MSU will fi nish up the seven-game stretch of away games when they head down south to play Ole Miss (11/29). The Bears will return home to Baltimore for a game against the Red Flash of St. Francis (12/1), and trek to the windy city of Chicago for a match up against DePaul (12/10). MSU will travel to the west coast to compete in the St. Mary’s Tournament in Moraga, CA (12/26-28), before making one last stop at the Univ. of Washington (12/30) before returning home to face Maryland (1/7) at College Park. On February 7th MSU will have their last non-conference game of the season when they head to the Tar Heel state to face Winston-Salem State.

Home Sweet HomeBozeman fi nished the season with a career record of 98-64 in fi ve seasons as a collegiate head coach. He is 38-35 in his third season as the Bears’ head coach, including a sensational 23-5 mark in home games. In fact for the fi rst time in school history the Bears fi nished the last season unbeaten at home as they posted an impressive 12-0 mark at Hill Field House, and recently had their 15-straight home winning streak snapped by St. Francis-Pa. in a 65-61 loss on Dec. 1, 2008. Prior to the loss the Bears had not been defeated at home since a two-point loss to Hampton on Feb. 20, 2007.

Trying To Get Another Winning SeasonMSU will attempt to do something it has not accomplished in over thirty years; they will try to record their fi rst back-to-back winning season. The last time Morgan State fi nished with consecutive winning seasons was when they posted a 18-12 record in 1977-78, followed by a 15-12 record in 1978-79. If they are able to accomplish consecutive wins it will mark the fi rst time in their Division I history. MSU’s longest consecutive winning streak in school history is 9 seasons, dating from 1968-69 to 1978-79.

TransfersMorgan State’s 2008-09 roster is the defi nition of diversity, with all the transfers from JUCO programs. Coach Bozeman has searched out the talents of fi ve transfers to add to the Bears roster. With two successful rebuilding seasons under his belt Coach Bozeman looks to these young men with great expectations.

• Buford Foote ( C/6-9/215) - Transfer from Pensacola CC who hails from Atlanta, GA ... He joins the Bears as a junior

Assists-To-Baskets Scored; Assists-To-TurnoversAssist-to-Turnover ratio has been a common term in basketball for years, but one of the tenants Coach Bozeman has stressed is the Assist-to-Baskets Made principle. Last season, MSU had 355 assists and 804 made basketballs, a breakdown of 44.1 percent of made baskets having an assist to set them up … In addition, MSU had 428 turnovers and ranked No. 2 in the MEAC in assist/turnover ratio (.83). The Bears currently rank 4th in the MEAC in assist/turnover ratio (0.8).

O CanadaThe MSU season got off to an early start thanks to a two-game exhibition at the fourth annual NCAA/OUA Tip-Off Classic hosted by the University of Windsor in Canada over the Labor Day weekend … The Bears played two games. The Bears fell to Western Ontario (85-78) and won against host school Windsor (70-59) … MSU’s decision to wait until the Labor Day Weekend to go on a trip outside the United States allowed the newcomers to join the veterans on the trip and allowed for a week of practice prior to leaving for Canada.

Postseason ConversationsWhile the MEAC is usually relegated to play-in purgatory (four of the last fi ve years), the Morgan State Bears could reverse the 16-seed blues this season. In several mid-major polls last season, the Bears were ranked in the Top 25 as a result of strong showings against the Big East (4-pt loss at UConn) and ACC (4-pt loss at Miami). Todd Bozeman is the reigning MEAC Coach of the Year, and returns two key starters in All-MEAC forward Marquise Kately and sharpshooting guard Reggie Holmes.

Road Warriors vs. Road Kill

Morgan State is looking to improve its road fortunes under 3rd year head coach Todd Bozeman. The Bears fi nished the 2007-08 season with a 7-8 overall road record, and went 1-6 against non-conference opponents. The Bears dropped their fi rst three road contests, losing at LaSalle (64-61), Manhattan (61-60) and Ole Miss (78-70), and posted their fi rst road win of the season with a big victory at DePaul (79-75). The Bears are currently 1-5 on the road.

3 Minute WarningMorgan State fi nished the 2007-08 season with a 21-2 record when leading with 3 minutes left, and following their season-fi nale loss at Virginia Tech in the NIT (3/19) the Bears were 0-9 when trailing with 3 minutes remaining. The Bears have started the 2008-09 season 3-0 when leading with 3 minutes left and 1-5 when trailing.

In just two seasons at the helm, Todd Bozeman has posted one of the most dramatic turnarounds in NCAA history by turning “perennial doormat” Morgan State into a Mid-major power. The Bears reached the No. 17 position in the College Insider Mid-major polls and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Washington Post Atlantic 11 poll. After a 7-8 start, the Bears reeled off an incredible eight straight victories, equaling its longest winning streak since 1975, and closed out the regular season by winning 13 of their last 14 regular season games. The team also proved it could compete against some of the nation’s best teams, as it suff ered four-point losses at UConn and Miami, and were outlasted by Seton Hall by 8-points earlier during the season. Morgan State men’s basketball coach Todd Bozeman was selected the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. This is the fi rst time since joining the MEAC that Bozeman has been named Coach of the Year by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. The last Morgan State coach to win the award was head coach Nathaniel Frazier in 1977. The Bears fi nished with a 22-11 regular season record, posting the most Division I victories in school history and the best overall record in over 30 years. The team, a preseason pick to fi nish 4th in the league, won its fi rst-ever MEAC regular season title and advanced to the league tournament championship for the fi rst time since 1977. Morgan State had never won a regular season title at any level, and its only previous MEAC crown came in 1977 when it won the conference tournament en route to the Division II Final Four. Bozeman concluded the year by taking the Bears to their fi rst Division I postseason appearance in history when they earned a postseason tournament appearance in the NIT. Bozeman fi nished the season with a career record of 98-64 in fi ve seasons as a collegiate head coach. He is 35-29 in his two seasons as the Bears’ head coach, including a sensational 21-4 mark in home games. In fact for the fi rst time in school history the Bears fi nished the season unbeaten at home as they posted an impressive 12-0 mark at Hill Field House. Morgan State featured one of the most dynamic rosters in the league. The Bears had the MEAC’s top ranked point guard Jerrell Green in addition to one of the top 3-point sharp-shooters in the league with sophomore Reggie Holmes. The Bears did not have a single player selected to the Preseason All-MEAC team, but fi nished the season with the 2008 MEAC Player of the Year Jamar Smith, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Boubacar Coly, and All-MEAC second team selection Marquise Kately. During the 2006-07 season Morgan State was predicted to fi nish 10th in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), however, Bozeman guided the Bears to a 13-18 overall record and fi nished tied for 3rd place in the conference in his fi rst season at the helm. Bozeman led the Bears to the 2007 MEAC Semi-Finals and was one game away from the Championship. Bozeman, widely regarded as one of the bright young minds in basketball, began his coaching duties April 27, 2006 and became the 15th head coach in Morgan State history. Prior to joining the Morgan State Bears, Bozeman spent two seasons as a college basketball analyst and conducted camps and clinics in South America and Africa. Bozeman also spent three seasons in the NBA as the advance scout for the Toronto Raptors where he not only scouted upcoming opponents but also coordinated and oversaw the Summer Player development program. Prior to the Raptors, Bozeman spent a season scouting for the Vancouver Grizzlies, who are now the Memphis Grizzlies.

Bozeman also spent time strengthening his ties with college coaches and familiarized himself with the top youth players as a coach at the AAU level. Bozeman took the college basketball world by storm after taking over the Cal program in mid-season 1993; he led the Golden Bears to an 11-2 fi nish and a surprise berth in the NCAA Tournament; including an upset of defending national champion Duke and a Sweet 16 berth to cap Cal’s best NCAA Tournament run since 1960. As the head coach of the University of California-Berkeley, Bozeman led the Golden Bears to three NCAA Tournament bids in four years, and was the youngest coach to ever reach the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen”. Within the Pac-10, Bozeman’s Bears became the fi rst school in conference history to win three straight games over UCLA in Pauley Pavilion, and was the fi rst school to take back-to-back games over Arizona in McKale Center in more than a decade. In four seasons as a head coach, he led Cal to a 63-35 record (64.3 pct.) and guided the Golden Bears to three top 4 fi nishes in the Pac-10. Bozeman was instrumental in building Cal into one of the elite programs in NCAA basketball and nurtured the development of future NBA stars Jason Kidd, Lamond, Murray, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Sean Marks, Ed Gray, Tremaine Fowlkes, Michael Stewart and the college basketball career of the NFL’s Tony Gonzales. Bozeman arrived at Cal in 1990 after spending two seasons as an assistant to Perry Clark at Tulane (1988-90). While a member of the Tulane staff , Bozeman played a major role in the rebuilding of the Green Wave basketball program. He also served as an assistant to Ernie Nestor at George Mason before taking the assistant job at Tulane. Bozeman began his coaching career upon graduating from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. A strong recruiter, Bozeman’s connections should continue to help bring better talent to Morgan State, which hasn’t won a MEAC championship in 30 years.

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University Explorers held on for a 64-61 victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena. La Salle’s Rodney Green and Kimmani Barrett each scored 15 points to lead all scorers but it was sophomore Jerrell Williams who came up with a pair of off ensive rebounds and follow-up buckets to help secure the win. La Salle led by as many as six points in the fi rst half, but Morgan State took control of the boards and chipped the lead down to 25-24 at the half following a jumper by newcomer Troy Smith. Marquise Kately hit one-of-two free throws to help the Bears tie the score for the ninth time with four minutes and 23 seconds to play. Two Williams’ free throws on the following pos-session gave his team a 58-56 lead. Williams would then crash the boards for an off ensive rebound and put-back off a missed three-pointer and follow a miss by Green at the 2:34 mark to build a 62-58 lead. He would then hit one of two free throws with 16 sec-onds to play to build a 63-58 advantage. He fi nished fi ve for seven from the line. The Explorers went just one for four from the line in the fi nal ten seconds to allow the Bears to remain in the game but Paul Johnson came up with a critical steal on the inbounds with 2.7 seconds left and a 63-61 lead. Barrett made one of two free throws to make the score 64-61 and Jermaine Bolden’s last-second three point missed at the buzzer. Bolden led the Bears with 14 points and fi ve assists, followed by Rogers Barnes with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. #Reggie Holmes# and Marquise Kately chipped in 10 points each. Morgan State shot 32.8 percent from the fi eld and knocked down 11-of-18 three pointers (42.1%). The Explorers fi nished 21-of-44 from the fi eld (47.7%) and shot 33.3 percent (4-12) from beyond the arc.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Reggie Holmes scored 13 points and Kevin Thompson added 12 points as the Morgan State Bears defeated the UMBC Retrievers 67-60 Monday night at Hill Field House. MSU has won 15 straight home-games as the Bears avenged a loss to UMBC last November at the RAC Arena. This was the Bears fi rst home game following a road loss to LaSalle. The Bears went 12-0 last year at home, en route to their fi rst MEAC regular season and have not been defeated at home since a two-point loss to Hampton on Feb. 20, 2007. The Bears controlled the pace throughout most of the night and never trailed. UMBC’s standout point guard Jay Greene fi nished with 11 points and eight rebounds and seven assists, but the Retrievers never got going off ensively as a result of constant defensive pressure by the Bears. The Bears held UMBC to 37 percent (20-54 FG) shooting from the fi eld and held a 42-35 advantage on the boards. Bolden did a solid job of managing the Bears’ off ensive possessions, played tough defense and led the Bears with fi ve assists to go along with eight points and two steals. Thompson, a 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman, scored 10 of his 12 points in the second and was a presence around the basket. Morgan State scored 40 of their points in the paint, compared to 20 by the Retrievers. The Bears also scored 17 points on second chance baskets and outscored UMBC’s bench by a 20-11 margin. Morgan State (1-1) led 34-31 at the break and limited the Retrievers to just three fi eld goals over a 10 minute span in the second half. Thompson hit a jumper to help give the Bears a 53-41 advantage with 7:53 remaining, and the Bears lead ballooned to as many as 16 points. The Retrievers (1-1) never came closer than seven for the rest of the game.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Antoine Pearson hit an off -balanced layup while falling down in the lane with 9.1 seconds to help Manhattan escape with a 61-60 victory against Morgan State on Wednesday night in the Jaspers’ home-opener and the fi rst meeting between the two teams. Morgan State went ahead 60-58 in a back-and-forth second half when Kevin Thompson scored with 49 seconds remaining. Andrew Gabriel hit a free throw with 21 seconds left to pull Manhattan within one before Pearson’s decisive shot. Reggie Holmes’ 3-point attempt at the buzzer for Morgan State was blocked by Darryl Crawford. Holmes and Thompson scored 12 points each for Morgan State (1-2), which was outrebounded by the Jaspers 30-23 en route to their second loss of the season. The Bears held a 30-26 advantage at the intermis-sion, but Manhattan began to slowly trim into the lead and with 4:37 left in the game Crawford nailed a 3-pointer to give the Jaspers a 54-51 edge. It marked the Jasper’s fi rst lead since the 15:58 mark of the fi rst half. Marquise Kately led the Bears on the glass with 7 rebounds, including 9 points and a blocked shot. Jermaine “Itchy” Bolden fi nished with a game-high eight assists, but struggled by shooting just 1-for-6 from the fl oor for two points. Chris Smith scored 14 points, Crawford had 12 and Devon Austin 11 for the Jaspers (2-0). Manhattan shot 41.7 percent (20-48) from the fi eld and was a dismal 2-for-13 (15.4%) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Bears shot 41.2 percent (7-17) from three-point territory and went 22-for-56 from the fi eld.

The Red Flash (2-4) handed Morgan State its fourth consecutive loss and also ended the Bears’ 15-game home winning streak. The Bears went (2-6) 12-0 last year at home, en route to their fi rst MEAC regular season and have not been defeated at home since atwo-point loss to Hampton on Feb. 20, 2007. Morgan State looked disinterested and fl at and the Red Flash capitalized by jumping out to an early lead. Marquise Kately fed Joseph Morgan an alley-oop dunk and Rogers Barnes hit the front end of a 1-and-1 to trim St. Francis’ lead to 43-39 with 10:08 remaining. Morgan State continued to stay close down the stretch and a 3-pointer by Holmes cut the lead to 61-59 with 29.9 seconds left. Rogers Barnes had 12 points and Kevin Thompson collected his second double-double of the season by collecting 10 points and 10 rebounds for Morgan State (3-6, 1-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), which trailed only twice in the game. Junior guard Joseph Morgan electrifi ed the crowd with a dunk midway through the fi rst half that helped ignite an 8-0 run. Morgan State led 28-19 at halftime. The Bears shot 41.1 percent from the fi eld (23 of 56) and made 5 of their 20 shots from beyond the arc. A 3-pointer by Holmes gave Morgan State its largest lead, 36-23, with 14:22 left in the game. Coppin State did not come within nine the rest of the way. ROSEMONT, Ill. – Morgan State’s basketball program had never beaten a BIG EAST opponent, until tonight. Reggie Holmes scored a career-high 29 points to lead Morgan State to a 79-75 victory over DePaul on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena before 7,561 fans. DePaul shot 9-for-30 from the fi eld in the second half, and went without a fi eld goal in the fi nal 10 minutes. The Blue Demons fi nished 25-of-66 (37.9%) as they dropped their third consecutive game of the season. Morgan State was led throughout the fi rst half by senior forward and Preseason All-MEAC selection Marquise Kately. Kately’s speed and ball-handling skills created a mismatch with DePaul’s taller players as he scored 12 of his season-high 16 points (8-14 FG) in the fi rst half. The Blue Demons took advantage of second chance opportunities and Dar Tucker scored 14 points to give DePaul a 44-37 lead at halftime.Morgan State may have trailed at the break, but it was clear the Bears were not going to go away. DePaul was leading 57-47 early on in the second half before Holmes started warming up the nets.Holmes, who had six points in the fi rst half, hit three consecutive three-pointers to help cut the lead. The junior exploded for 23 second half points and went 5-for-9 from 3-point territory.Holmes hit his 4th three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 70-70 with 2:44 remaining. DePaul retook the lead when Tucker was fouled and hit the front end of a 1-and-1 to give his team a one-point edge with 1:29 left on the clock. But once again Holmes came up with a big shot when he nailed his fi fth 3-pointer of the half to give the Bears a 73-71 lead. Morgan State locked down the Demons on defense in the fi nal moments and shot 6-for-8 from the free throw line to seal the victory, handing the Blue Demons their fi rst non-conference home loss of the season.

MORAGA, Calif. – Jermaine Bolden hit a 17-footer from the baseline as the fi nal buzzer sounded and Morgan State held off William Jessup 70-68 in the Shamrock Offi ce Solutions Classic on Saturday night.
