FIRST-AND-10... • Maryland moved to 2-0 for the first time in three years with Saturday’s dominating 62-3 win over Morgan State. The Terps now set their sites on nationally-ranked West Virginia. Maryland and WVU have a long history together, having met 46 times, though not since 2007. Saturday’s game, which is scheduled to start at noon, will be telecast nationally on ESPNU and broadcast on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network. • Maryland hopes the return of a number of key performers from last season will help it battle for the ACC Atlantic Division crown and reach postseason play for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons. The Terrapins, who have been to six bowl games under Friedgen, return 51 letterwinners, including 12 offensive and defensive starters, all four special teams performers and eight players who have earned all-conference and/or All-America honors. • The Maryland offense, under third-year coordinator and assistant head coach James Franklin, has seven starters back from last year and has utilized its strong rushing attack led by senior Da’Rel Scott and junior Davin Meggett. That duo has averaged 7.5 yards per carry and tallied 255 yards over the first two games. Meggett had a career-high 105 yards in the season-opening win over Navy. Scott played in just seven games a year ago due to injury, but was a first team All-ACC pick in 2008 and rushed for 58 yards and scored one TD in the opener. QB Jamarr Robinson is the second-leading ground gainer with 128 yards on just 17 carries. Robinson ran for 92 yards vs. Navy and tossed two TDs vs. Morgan State. WR Torrey Smith is one of the most dynamic players in the nation. He ranked sixth nation- ally in all-purpose yards (182.7 per game) and posted 61 catches last season. Smith, a Biletnikoff Award candidate, has just four catches so far this season, but two were for scores. The offensive line, led by returning starters C Paul Pinegar, LG Andrew Gonnella and RT R.J. Dill, as well as LT Justin Gilbert and RG Justin Lewis, helped the Terps rush for 261 yards against Navy, their highest total in two years. The Terps rushing attack ranks No. 19 nationally. • A two-time All-ACC performer, senior Alex Wujciak headlines a defense under second-year coordinator Don Brown, which returns seven of its top 10 tacklers from last season. The Terps are coming off one of their best statistical performances in recent memory, holding Morgan State to 85 total yards, the lowest output by an opponent in Ralph Friedgen’s 10 seasons. The Terps are now 32nd nationally in total defense (285 ypg) and 10th in scoring defense (8.5 ppg). Wujciak, who is listed among the preseason candidates for five national awards (see list on pg. 2), and the linebacker crew were in the middle of the action. Adrian Moten, a playmaker throughout his career (team-best 9.0 TFLs and 6.0 and sacks last year), tallied 12 stops vs. Navy and had a pick vs. Morgan State. A 2009 freshman All-ACC pick, Demetrius Hartsfield had a career-high 12 stops vs. Navy and an interception return for a TD Saturday against MSU. A.J. Francis, a 2009 freshman All-America choice, and sophomore Joe Vellano are two of nine letterwinners back on the defensive line. Vellano emerged in the off-season and had 10 tackles, including two sacks in the opener. Junior CB Cameron Chism, one of five returning defensive starters, posted a team-best four interceptions in 2009, while senior Antwine Perez and junior Kenny Tate are seasoned, having played significantly at safety, but are starters for the first time. Tate posted a career-best 12 tackles, including a game saving goal-line stop, and two forced fumbles vs. Navy. • Special teams should be a strength with all the top performers back and the Terps have demonstrated that over the first two games. Travis Baltz, a 2008 first team All-ACC punter, has handled both kicking chores with an injury to place-kicker Nick Ferrara, a 2009 freshman All-American. Baltz has connected on all three of his field-goal attempts and is averaging 46.3 yards per punt which would rank 10th nationally with enough attempts. Tony Logan is off to a fast start as the No. 1 punt returner. Logan had a career-best 128 return yards vs. Morgan State and is averaging a nation’s best 37.0 ypr. Torrey Smith was one of the top kick returners in the country last season, posting an ACC single-season record 1,309 yards, but he has had just one return this season. QUICK HITTERS....• Maryland is receiving votes in both this week’s Associated Press (six) and USA Today Coaches (seven) polls.• The Terps have started 2-0 for the fourth time in Ralph Friedgen’s tenure (also 2001, 2004 and 2007). Maryland reached a bowl game two of the prior three times it won its fi rst two contests.• Maryland and West Virginia have been 2-0 in each of the last three meetings. • The 85 yards in total offense allowed by Maryland against Morgan State (09/11) are the fewest in the Friedgen era. Maryland has now had seven games since 2001 in which they have allowed less than 200 yards (see chart on pg. 5). The most recent was 187 by Villanova in 2007, with the fewest previously al-lowed being 124 against Eastern Michigan in 2001. • Morgan State rushed for 37 yards Saturday, the lowest total by a Maryland opponent since Duke had 23 last season.• Maryland’s 17-point fi rst quarter against Morgan State (9/11) marked the most points in the opening 15:00 since the Terps scored 24 on 9/13/2003 at home vs. The Citadel.• Maryland’s 45 points in the fi rst half tied for the most in the Friedgen era. The Terps took a 45-21 halftime lead over North Carolina on 11/1/2003 en route to a 59-21 home victory. It is the fourth time Maryland scored 40 in a half in the Friedgen era. Maryland’s 28-point second quarter marked the most points since it had an ACC-record 39 in the second period against UNC in that 2003 game.• The last time Maryland scored 50 or more in a game before Saturday was 9/20/2008 when the Terps beat Eastern Michigan 51-24. The last time Maryland scored 60 in a game was a 61-0 win over The Citadel on 09/13/03. The 62 points mark the most by the Terrapins in the Friedgen era and is the sixth-highest total in school history (see list on pg. 5). It is the seventh time Maryland has scored 50 points or more in the Friedgen era. Maryland’s 62 points were the most since a 62-24 win over Virginia on 11/22/75. It was also Maryland’s largest victory margin since a 61-0 win over the Citadel on Sept. 13, 2003. • The Terrapins return over 70 percent of the offen-sive and defensive two-deep from the end of 2009. There are 17 of 22 offensive players back and 14 of 22 defenders. In addition, all six special teams start-ers (KR, PR, PK, P, LS, H) are back in uniform.• The Terps have just eight seniors (Adrian Cannon, Paul Pinegar, Da’Rel Scott, LaQuan Williams, Drew Gloster, Adrian Moten, Alex Wujciak, and Antwine Perez) listed among the 44 players on the current offensive and defensive two-deep. In addi-tion, senior Travis Baltz is the fi rst-team punter and place-kicker. • The Terps rushing total of 261 yards vs. Navy was the most since they tallied 271 against Delaware

(Aug. 30, 2008). Mary-land’s 7.7 yards per rush was its highest average since posting 7.9 ypr (49 attempts for 388 yards) against North Carolina on Nov. 2, 2002.• Tony Logan had a ca-reer-high 128 punt return yards on four attempts against Morgan State. That total eclipsed his season tally in 2009 (15 for 100 yards) and is the most by any Terp in one year since Danny Oquendo 218 yards in 2006. Bob Shem-onski (146 vs. N.C. State in 1950) holds the single-game school record.• Torrey Smith has a school-record three career kickoff returns for touch-downs and is one of only two active players in the ACC with more than one (2 by T.J. Graham , N.C. State). Tyron Carrier of Houston (5) is the only player in the nation with more kickoff returns for touchdowns than Smith (see list on pg. 4).• Alex Wujciak has av-eraged 10.6 tackles per game in his career which is second in the nation among active players (see chart on pg. 4).• There are six bowl teams from last year which ap-pear on the Terps’ 2010 schedule: Navy (Texas Bowl), West Virginia (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl), Clemson (Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl), Boston College (Emerald Bowl), Miami (Champs Sports Bowl), and Florida State (Konica Minolta Gator Bowl).

SUDDEN CHANGE...After going 41 games without scoring via a fumble or interception (Erin Henderson in 2006 vs. Virginia), Maryland has registered a defensive touchdown in three of the last six contests. Demetrius Hartsfi eld’s pick-six in the second quarter of the Morgan State game (09/11) was Maryland’s fi rst defensive score since Alex Wujciak scored on a 70-yard interception return on 11/14/09 at NC State. One week later, Jared Harrell fell on a fumble in the end zone vs. Virginia Tech (11/21).

DID YOU KNOW?...Each of Maryland’s last three interception returns for scores were by linebackers (Demetrius Harts-fi eld vs. Morgan State, 09/11/10; Alex Wujciak vs. N.C. State, 11/14/09); Erin Henderson vs. Virginia, 10/14/06).

QUICK STARTS...After scoring 57 points in the opening quarter all of last season, Maryland has tallied 31 points in the fi rst quarter of its two games. In fact, the Terps have scored on all fi ve of their fi rst-quarter possessions and out-gained the opposition 274 to 84 this season. They had two touchdowns against Navy (9/6) and two TDs and a fi eld goal vs. Morgan State (9/11). Davin Meggett has 115 yards on eight carries and Jamarr Robinson has completed 5 of 8 passes for 57 yards and rushed for another 53 in the fi rst quarter.

GREEN TEAM...Maryland played 24 freshmen (10 true/14 redshirts) last season, which was the most during Ralph Friedgen’s fi rst nine seasons. The Terps played 20 freshmen in both the 2001 and 2004 seasons. Last year’s freshmen are now sophomores, but the Terps are still relatively young, though more experienced. Of the 111 players on the roster, 67 are freshmen or sophomores, but just 16 are seniors. Maryland also had a relatively low senior class (14) last season. There were 12 Maryland players who saw action for the fi rst time in their careers against Navy (09/06), including nine freshmen. Seeing action were true freshmen Matt Robinson and David Mackall, red-shirt freshmen Dexter McDougle, Danny O’Brien, D.J. Adams, Avery Graham, Marcus Whitfi eld, Bradley Johnson and Dave Stinebaugh; sopho-more Ryan Schlothauer; and juniors Nick Peterson and Herbert Law.

ALL HANDS ON DECK...There were 75 players who saw action Saturday against Morgan State which is the most in Ralph Friedgen’s tenure. The Terps had 70 players take the fi eld vs. The Citadel on 09/13/03. After 12 players saw their fi rst career action in the season opener vs. Navy, another 14 Terps got their feet wet vs. Morgan State (09/11). The list included Louis Berman, Cody Blue, C.J. Brown, Josh Cary, Pete DeSouza, Anthony Green, Trenton Hughes, Desmond Kearse, Nick Klemm, Paul Lariviere, Joey McQueeney, Chris Rhodes, Mike Salvatico and Pete White.

CAREER DAY...There were a number of Maryland players who posted career high numbers against Navy (09/06/10):• Junior DB Kenny Tate recorded career highs in tackles (12), solo stops (9) and forced fumbles (2). His previous high in tackles was eight (vs. N.C. State 11/7/09).• Senior LB Alex Wujciak posted a career-best 18 tackles (previous best: 17 vs. Rutgers, 9/26/09).• Seeing his fi rst extensive action, sophomore Joe Vellano recorded career highs in tackles (10), tackles for loss (3.0) and sacks (2.0). Vellano had just one career tackle before that game.• Senior DE Drew Gloster had a career-high seven tackles (previous best: three vs. NC State 11/7/09). • Sophomore LB Demetrius Hartsfi eld fi nished with a career-best 12 tackles, and his previous career high was 11 vs. Boston College on 11/28/09.• Sophomore DL Justin Anderson posted a career-high fi ve tackles and his fi rst forced fumble.• Davin Meggett’s 67-yard scamper in the first quarter was the longest run of the junior’s career. It was also Maryland’s longest run since Darrius

Heyward-Bey went 76 yards vs. Clemson (09/27/08).Meggett totaled 105 yards in the game on just eight carries, the fi rst 100-yard game of his career.

COACHING STAFF AT-A-GLANCE...• Ralph Friedgen is in his 10th season as Maryland’s head coach. Friedgen has a 68-46 (.596) record and has led the Terps to six bowl games. He has won a school record four bowl games, while his victory total and winning percentage both rank fourth in Maryland history. Friedgen needs two more victories to become just the 13th head coach in ACC history to reach 70 career wins.• Assistant head coach/offensive coordinator James Franklin was named the eventual successor to Friedgen in February, 2009. Franklin, 38, has spent the better part of this decade on the Maryland staff. He served as the wide receivers coach from 2000 to 2004, which spanned Friedgen’s fi rst four seasons. During that time, Franklin established himself as one of the nation’s top recruiters. Rivals.com ranked Franklin as one of the nation’s top 25 recruiters for two of those fi rst four years and tapped him again last season.• Don Brown is in his second year as defensive coordinator. Brown, who runs an attacking-style defense, served as head coach of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst the previous fi ve years which included a trip to the 2006 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) title game. Dur-ing his tenure, UMass maintained one of the top defensive units in the nation. The Minutemen fi nished among the top 20 in total defense in three of his fi ve seasons (third in 2005; 20th in 2006; 14th in 2007).

TOUGH LOSSES...The Terps suffered a couple of diffi cult losses during the preseason. Junior TE Lansford Watson injured his knee, had surgery at the end of camp and is out for the season. Watson, who played in 10 games last season, was atop the depth chart at tight end, along with Devonte Campbell. In fact that position was hit hard in August. Campbell (knee), Will Yeatman (fractured fi nger) and Ryan Schlothauer (leg) suf-fered from various ailments. Maryland had another signifi cant loss in the preseason when linebacker Ben Pooler also suffered a season-ending knee injury. Pooler, the team’s versatile fourth linebacker, had fi ve starts last season when he posted 43 tackles, which was ninth on the squad. De’Onte Arnett, Nick Ferrara and Gary Douglas also missed the Navy game, but all should return in the near future. Taylor Watson, who had knee surgery in the spring, may return against West Virginia. Yeatman is also hopeful to return against the Mountaineers

In addition, he can also become the 10th player in school history with 3,000 career all-purpose yards with another 271. • Torrey Smith ranks fourth in school history in career all-purpose yardage (3,692). He needs 12 yards to reach Louis Carter (1972-74) who is in third place. With 308 more all-purpose yards Smith will become the second player in school history to reach the 4,000-yard plateau. Lamont Jordan (1997-00) has a school-record 4,960 all-purpose yards. • Smith, who holds the Maryland career kickoff return yards mark (2,421), needs 268 yards to set the ACC mark. MD-WVU SERIES HISTORY...• Maryland and West Virginia have met a total of 46 times since the fi rst meeting between the schools in 1919. The Mountaineers own a 23-21-2 lead in the all-time series. The Terps are 4-4 against WVU under current Maryland boss Ralph Friedgen. West Virginia has taken four straight from Maryland after the Terps had won the four meetings prior to that. The Terps defeated the Mountaineers 41-7 in the 2003 Toyota Gator Bowl in the only postseason meeting between the two schools.• Maryland has played West Virginia more than any other non-conference opponent (46 times), and the Terps have only faced six schools more than the Mountaineers.• The Terps and Mountaineers met every season from 1980 to 2007. • Maryland is 3-8 all-time against ranked West Virginia teams. The Terrapins last win over a ranked Mountaineer squad came in the 2003 Toyota Gator Bowl, when the 23rd-ranked Terps toppled the 20th ranked Mountaineers, 41-7.• Maryland is 11-11-1 at Byrd Stadium and WVU is 12-9-1 at Mountaineer Field. The teams have played one neutral site game (2003 Toyota Gator Bowl).

MD-WVU EXTEND SERIES...Maryland and West Virginia will continue their football rivalry until at least 2017 as the schools recently agreed to extend the series. The teams are scheduled to meet each of the next four years and will now play another four seasons. The upcoming series is as follows:• Sept. 18, 2010 - @ West Virginia• 2011 - @ Maryland• 2012 - @ West Virginia• 2013 - @ Maryland• 2014 - @ Maryland• 2015 - @ West Virginia• 2016 - @ West Virginia• 2017 - @ MarylandMaryland and West Virginia have met 46 times (WVU leads 23-21-2), including each season from 1980 to 2007. After a two-year hiatus (2008-09) in the series, the schools agreed to a pair of home-and-home tilts (2010-11) and then tacked on two more years (2012-13) in 2009.

GOAL-LINE STAND...The Terps had four key goal-line stands against Navy (09/06) which allowed them to come away with a 17-14 win:• With Navy at the Maryland 1-yard line halfway through the second quarter, Adrian Moten leapt over the offensive line and forced a Ricky Dobbs fumble that Antwine Perez recovered.• After Maryland went three-and-out, the Midshipmen again threatened to score as they drove the Maryland seven. But Perez stopped Dobbs at the 2 on third down and time expired in the fi rst half.• The Terps had another big stop in the second half. After Navy went on a 13-play, 59-yard drive to get to the 1, Kenny Tate forced a fumble by Dobbs that Maryland linebacker Ryan Donohue recovered.• Maryland came through with its biggest stop on a Navy fourth-and-goal from the Maryland 1 with just 0:37 to play. Tate smashed through the line and tackled Dobbs.

TURNING RED...The Maryland defense came up with the big stop time and again in the 17-14 win over Navy (09/6/10). The Midshipmen ran 82 plays and held the ball for close to 40 minutes, but when they got within scoring range, the Terps defense stiffened. Navy ran 32 plays in the red zone, but were only able to come away with points just twice in seven trips. Navy missed a 32-yard fi eld goal on its fi rst possession of the game, but went inside the Maryland 5-yard line on four trips without scoring. The Terps forced two fumbles, stopped a Navy drive at the end of the fi rst half and had a goal-line stand in the fi nal minute of the game to secure the win.

HOLDING ONTO THE BALL...For Maryland to be successful this season it must do a better job of holding onto the ball. The Terps struggled overall in the turnover department in 2009, but improved during the latter half of the year. The Terps were tied for 97th in the nation in turnover margin (-0.55 per game), but were +7.0 over the last fi ve games. The defense forced 10 turnovers in the last fi ve games (also one on special teams vs. N.C. State) after inducing seven in the fi rst seven contests. A key to the second-half improvement was Jamarr Robinson who did not thrown an interception in his 85 pass attempts which all came in the fi nal four games of the year. However, Robinson tossed a pick in his fi rst attempt vs. Navy (9/6) and the offense also fumbled the ball once. But the Maryland defense forced two Midshipmen turnovers and forced two other fumbles which were recovered by Navy. The Terps were +2.0 in the turnover dept. against Morgan State (9/11) and ranked tied for 23rd nationally in turnover margin.

WEEKLY AWARDS...DB Kenny Tate and DL Joe Vellano picked up individual awards after helping the Terps down Navy, 17-14 (09/06). Tate was voted as ACC Defensive Back of the Week, while Vellano was tabbed the top defensive lineman in the league. It marked the fi rst weekly ACC honor for both players, who were instru-mental in Maryland holding Navy to two scores in seven red-zone chances. Tate notched a career-high 12 tackles and also forced a pair of fumbles. Vellano, making his fi rst career start, came through with sev-eral crucial stops on the interior of the defensive line. The sophomore had 10 tackles, including fi ve solo stops, as well as 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Tate was also named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and was the Jim Thorpe Award DB of the Week. Tate will be added to the 2010 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 6. Five fi nalists will be announced on Nov. 18.

ROBINSON TAKES STARTING REINS...Jamarr Robinson, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., has been atop the depth chart at quarterback since the spring. Robinson made his fourth career start last week against Navy. He also had two starts last season. • In the season opener, Robinson rushed for 92 yards, averaging 7.7 ypc on 12 rushes. He attempted just fi ve passes in the game, completing two of them, while throwing his fi rst career interception.• Robinson put up solid numbers while splitting time with Danny O’Brien and C.J. Brown against Morgan State. He passed for 70 yards and ran for another 36 on just fi ve attempts. Robinson also had the fi rst mutliple-touchdown game of his career, hooking up with Torrey Smith on a fi ve-yard TD and Adrian Can-non on a 19-yarder. Overall, Robinson led the Terps on fi ve scoring drives in the game. • Last season, Robinson saw most of his action late in the season in place of an injured Chris Turner. Against Virginia Tech (11/14), in his fi rst career start, Robinson totaled 233 yards of offense, including 129 yards on the ground. The rushing total was the third-highest by a quarterback in school history.• In his second career start, Robinson showed vast improvement through the air while maintaining his ability to pick up yards on the ground against Florida State. He fi nished the game 20 of 27 (74.1 percent) for 213 yards and a touchdown. Robinson also ran 12 times for 58 yards, helping the Terps post a season-high 196 yards on the ground. All in all, he led the Terps on fi ve scoring drives.• Robinson, along with backups Danny O’Brien and C.J. Brown, have the ability to turn a bad play into a good one. “I think all the quarterbacks that we have now have the athleticism we’re looking for, in terms of just opening up the playbook and allowing us to do more things,” said offensive coordinator James Franklin. “When the play breaks down, because as we all know very rarely are things perfect, that they have the chance to make a play with their legs or extend or create a play.”

CLOSE CALLS...Despite the 2-10 fi nish last year, Maryland was in nearly every game to the last possession. In seven of the losses, the Terps were within a touchdown in the fourth quarter. They lost four games by four points or less and the last two by a combined fi ve points. In the loss to Florida State on Nov. 21, Maryland took the lead twice in the fi nal quarter vs the Seminoles, only to lose on a touchdown with 32 seconds left. The Terps hope the season-opening 17-14 win over Navy (9/6) helps them revert to their 2008 form. Two seasons ago, the Terps were 6-1 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

GETTING BACK ON TRACK...After an injury-plagued 2009, senior Da’Rel Scott appears to be back to the form which made him an All-ACC performer in 2008. A breakaway threat ev-ery time he touches the ball, Scott is a three-time member of the Doak Walker Award watch list (2008-10 and two-time member of the Maxwell Award watch list (2009-10). Scott posted the seventh-highest single-season rushing total (1,133) in school history and with just 149 more yards will become the 10th back in school history to reach 2,000 career rushing yards. A broken forearm relegated Scott to seven games last year, but a strong off-season put him in position for a big year. “I thought his prepara-tion was better than it’s ever been,” Friedgen said. “I thought Da’Rel had a fantastic spring and he’s continued that this preseason. He looks even faster and his ball security has been much improved. He’s also done a much better job playing without the ball.” Maryland’s offense has relied heavily on the rushing attack early in the season. The Terps rushed for 261 yards in the season opener against Navy, with Scott rushing 10 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. Against Morgan State, the Terps ran for 221 yards as a team, with Scott picking up 42 yards on eight carries. The senior also made three receptions for 31 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown pass from Danny O’Brien.

MORE THAN A TACKLING MACHINE...One of the top play-making linebackers in the country, Alex Wujciak has proved he can do more than just wrap up opposing ball carriers. Wujciak was a fi rst team All-ACC pick in 2009 after leading the team in tackles (career-high 131) and ranking eighth nationally in that category (10.9 per game). He was a consensus preseason All-ACC pick heading into this season and is on the watch list for fi ve awards - Lombardi Award, Nagurski Trophy, Lott Trophy, Bednarik Award and Butkus Award. He set a new career high with 18 tackles in the season opener against Navy and has recorded double digit tackles in 18 of his last 23 games. But the senior also had a pair of interceptions last season and set the Maryland record for return yards. Wujciak totaled 152 return yards on his two picks which set a single-season school record. Joe Horning had 147 return yards in 1951. Wujciak’s return yardage ranked fi fth nationally last season and was the most by any linebacker. He had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown vs. N.C. State and had a 82-yarder vs. Florida State which set up a TD.

MULTI-FACETED PLAYMAKER...Torrey Smith entered 2010 as Maryland’s No. 1 receiver for the second straight year, with a repu-tation as one of the most explosive playmakers in the nation. Smith set the ACC single-season record for kickoff return yardage each of the last two years, totaling 1,309 returns yards a year ago. He led the

Terps in receptions (61) and receiving yards (824) and ranked sixth in the nation in all-purpose yards (182.7 per game). Smith was tabbed a preseason fi rst team All-ACC selection as a wide receiver and specialist.• The junior caught his fi rst two touchdown passes of the season against Morgan State - a 5-yarder and a 24-yarder. • Smith has three career 100-yard receiving games, including two in 2009.• Smith returned two kicks for touchdowns last season - an 81-yarder against James Madison and an 82-yarder vs. N.C. State. • Smith set a career-high with 287 all-purpose yards (165 receiving, 109 KOR, 13 rushing) against MTSU (9/19) and totaled at least 225 all-purpose yards in six games last season. He was one of only two players in the nation (also Donald Buckham, UTEP) to post 260 or more all-purpose yards in three games.• Smith is fourth on Maryland’s career all-purpose yards list (3,692); tied for 15th on the Terps career receptions list (89) and 17th on the receiving yards chart (1,207). • Smith’s value to the Terrapins doesn’t stop on the fi eld – he is a member of the Terrapin Council, the team’s leadership committee, for the second year in a row. “He’s a very good receiver, he’s a very good leader, he’s a very good person,” Friedgen said during fall camp. “He’s very humble. He’s really just a great kid. He has a tremendous work ethic. He’s a good student. He’s the ideal of low maintenance-high pro-duction…his meaning to our team – just his presence alone makes us better. Take away that he’s a good football player and everything. His presence in this program, his leadership qualities, his camaraderie, his unselfi shness, his ability to communicate with me and all the other kids – he’s going to be very successful in life.”

CONTINUITY BUILDING ON O-LINE...Maryland’s inexperience along the offensive line showed last season. The Terps had lost fi ve of the top seven performers along the line heading into the season but have restored some stability for the 2010 season. Although center Phil Costa and left tackle Bruce Campbell have moved onto the NFL, Maryland now has a clear-cut fi rst unit, something that couldn’t be said a year ago. Maryland’s starting unit consists of sophomore Justin Gilbert at left tackle; junior Andrew Gonnella at left guard; senior Paul Pinegar at center; sophomore Justin Lewis at right guard; and sophomore R.J. Dill at right tackle. Pinegar is the most experienced and versatile of the group, having played in 26 games with 14 career starts. The senior has seen time at both tackle positions as well as guard. Lewis drew praise from the coaching staff during fall camp for his improved play and beat out sophomore Bennett Fulper for the right guard spot. Lewis played in nine games last year with three starts

along the line. Dill, meanwhile, is the stalwart right tackle, having played in all 12 games at that position last season with eight starts. • Maryland’s improvement along the line has been evident in the fi rst two games of the season. In the season opener the Terps racked up 261 rushing yards (most since 271 vs. Delaware in 2008) on just 34 attempts - an average of 7.7 ypc. Davin Meggett had his fi rst career 100-yard game, including a career long 67-yard run, Jamarr Robinson ran for 92 yards and Da’Rel Scott had 58.• Against Morgan State, the Terps had their second consecutive 200-yard rushing game, going for 221. Freshman D.J. Adams led the way against the Bears, tallying all of his game-high 70 yards in the fourth quarter while also rushing for two touchdowns. In all, 10 Terrapins contributed to the rushing attack.• The last time Maryland had back-to-back 200-yard rushing games was 2007, when they had 200 against Wake Forest and 239 against Rutgers the following week. • The line set out to shed pounds and improve its athleticism during the offseason conditioning program. Some linemen lost as much as 40 pounds, with aver-age weight loss at 10 to 15 pounds. The coaching staff hopes that improved conditioning and athleticism will lead to better results in stopping speed off the edge in 2010. “I think it’s helped us,” said offensive coordinator James Franklin. “I think our guys feel better. They’re moving quicker and they’re able to sustain a certain level of play for a longer period of time because they’re not carrying the extra weight. The game is about speed at every position. That’s going to be our emphasis.”

BOOMING BALTZ...Travis Baltz has been doing it all for the Terrapins in special teams. An All-ACC selection in 2008 as a punter, Baltz is not only handling punt duties early on this season, he is also responsible for fi eld goals and PATs due to Nick Ferrara’s injury. • Baltz currently ranks third in the ACC with an aver-age of 46.3 ypp. Of his seven punts on the season, four have been inside the opponents 20 yard-line and three have been 50 yards or longer. • While taking on kicking duties for the fi rst time in his collegiate career, Baltz was 2 for 2 on PATs and made his only fi eld goal attempt - a 24-yarder - against Navy in the season opener. • Against Morgan State, Baltz kicked two 47-yard fi eld goals and was a perfect 8 for 8 on PATs. In addition to place-kicking and punting duties, the senior had to handle the kickoffs as well in the second half after an injury to Ted Townsley. Baltz averaged 60.5 yards on four kickoffs. • Baltz has a career average of 41.2 ypp. In 2009 he averaged 40.7 ypp despite battling several injuries and in 2008, Baltz averaged 41.1 yards per punt, which ranked fi rst in the ACC and 43rd nationally (FBS).

SECONDARY STEPPING UP...The Maryland secondary has allowed just 121 yards in two games (60.5 ypg), which ranks fi rst in the ACC and third in the nation, despite welcoming several new faces to the starting rotation. After losing three of four starters to graduation, the lone returning starter is junior Cameron Chism, who moved into a starting role last season after an injury to Nolan Carroll and had a very productive year. Opposite of Chism is junior Trenton Hughes, with redshirt freshman Dexter McDougle also seeing time at cornerback. Antwine Perez and Kenny Tate took over the starting safety positions and both made an immediate impact. In the season opener, Perez made fi ve tackles and recovered a fumble while Tate had a career-high 12 tackles and two forced fumbles, both of which came when Navy was in the red zone. Tate also stopped Ricky Dobbs on fourth-and-1 from the Maryland 1-yard line with under a minute to play to help preserve the win. • Opposing quarterbacks have completed just 13 of 38 passes this season (34 percent), are averaging just 3.2 yards per attempt and have yet to throw a touchdown pass against Maryland. The Terps also lead the ACC in pass defense effi ciency, as opposing QBs have just a 50.4 rating. • Others new to the mix this season include sopho-more Eric Franklin, redshirt freshmen Avery Graham and Travis Hawkins, and true freshman Matt Rob-inson, who tied for the team lead with seven tackles against Morgan State.

DEPTH AND EXPERIENCE AT LINE-BACKER...One of the strongest units on the team is linebacker with starters Alex Wujciak (Mike), Adrian Moten (Sam) and Demetrius Hartsfi eld (Will). • Maryland ranks third in the ACC in total defense, in part due to the linebacking corps. Wujciak leads the ACC with 11.5 tackles per game, Moten has one forced fumle and one interception already this season and Hartsfi eld made his fi rst career intercep-tion against Morgan State, returning it 14 yards for a touchdown. • The trio combined for 42 tackles against Navy (Wu-jciak 18; Moten and Hartsfi eld 12 each) and helped stop the Midshipmen from scoring on fi ve of their seven trips to the red zone. Moten had a spectacular play that made highlight reels around the country, jumping over the offensive line as QB Ricky Dobbs snapped the ball at the Maryland 1-yard line to force a fumble that Maryland recovered. Moten also had 1.0 tackle for loss, while Wujciak and Harstfi eld had 0.5 each. • Wujciak is a two-time All-ACC selection and a consensus preseason fi rst team All-ACC pick. He is one of only two players in the nation to post 130 tackles in each of the last two seasons. Moten’s 13.0 career sacks and 19.0 tackles for loss are tops on the team. The Terps also have depth behind the starters, although they were dealt a setback with the loss of junior Ben Pooler to a knee injury in the preseason. Pooler played in 11 games with fi ve starts last season and was the backup at Will. Sophomore Ryan Donohue, Pooler’s replacement at Will, had a solid fall camp and recovered a fumble in the game against Navy. True freshman David Mackall, who tied for the team lead with seven tackles against Morgan State, is the backup at Mike and sophomore Darin Drakeford backs up Moten at Sam.

TERPS ADD FLORIDA TRANSFER...One of the most highly sought-after players in the 2010 recruiting class has joined the Terps. Adrian Coxson, a transfer from the University of Florida, began practicing with the team last week. Coxson will sit out this season and be eligible to play in 2011. The Baltimore native is looking forward to getting back on the fi eld. “It’s close to home and it’s a good program with great coaches,” Coxson said of his decision to come to Maryland. “I believe Maryland is really on the rise and I think we’re going to have a great season.” A four-star prospect who was rated the No. 19 wide receiver in the nation according to Scout.com and the seventh-best player in the state of Maryland by Rivals.com, Coxson had over 1,280 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns and 650 yards passing and eight touchdowns as a wildcat quarterback in 2009. Coxson averaged 12.08 yards per carry as a senior and had more than 200 rushing yards in four games. He fi nished his junior season with 40 catches for 987 yards and 12 touchdowns. Coxson was a 2009

Baltimore Sun fi rst team All-Metro selection and a second team All-Metro pick in 2008.

TERPS OWN NATION’S LONGEST STREAK...• During the last nine seasons, Maryland has had three full-time punters (Brooks Barnard, Adam Podlesh, and Travis Baltz), three long snappers (Jon Condo, Andrew Schmitt and Tim Downs) and zero blocked punts. In fact, since the Wake Forest game in 1999 (Oct. 9), only four players (Barnard, Podlesh, Baltz, Nick Ferrara) have started at punter. Downs made his debut last season, replacing Schmitt, a four-year starter at the position. However, with Baltz shelved with a injury, Ferrara took over punting duties for fi ve games. In addition, Ted Townsley had one punt in the game against Rutgers (9/26).• The Terrapins’ streak without a blocked punt goes back 125 games, the longest streak in college football. The team has kept that streak intact under second-year special teams coordinator Charles Bankins.• The Terps have not had a punt blocked since Nov. 13, 1999 (Florida State). That amount of time became the longest in NCAA football when Georgia had a punt blocked by Ole Miss in 2006, snapping a streak which began earlier in the 1999 season.

PROTECTING THE HOUSE...• The Terrapins are 42-17 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium under Ralph Friedgen.• The Terps fi nished the 2001 (7-0) and 2003 (6-0) seasons with perfect home records. The Terps also had just one loss at home during the 2002, 2006 and 2008 campaigns. • In 117-plus seasons of football, Maryland has fi nished undefeated at home 19 times. Just eight of those occasions, however, have occurred since 1950 (when Byrd Stadium opened), including just three (1976, 2001 and ‘03) since 1975.• The Terrapins’ 6-0 mark in 2003 tied for the second-best record at home in school history. The 1976 team was also 6-0, only to be trumped by the 2001 team which won all seven home games.

MORE ON CAPITAL ONE FIELD AT BYRD STADIUM...• Now in its 61st year of operation, Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium (which had its name changed for the 2009 season) continues to serve as the home of the Terps. Opened on Sept. 30, 1950, and constructed for a sum of $1 million, Byrd was named after Dr. H.C. “Curley” Byrd, a multi-sport star at Maryland who later became the school’s head football coach and, ultimately, its president.• The Terrapins are 198-116-1 within the friendly confi nes of Byrd. With the Tyser Tower expansion and temporary bleachers, Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium can hold up to 54,000 (up from 51,500 prior to the 2009 expansion).• Twenty-two of the top 29 crowds in Byrd Stadium history have occurred during Ralph Friedgen’s tenure.• Three of the top eight crowds in Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium history occurred in 2007. Maryland welcomed 52,782 fans to Byrd for the 2007 Home-coming game vs. Virginia (Oct. 20). The crowd was the eighth-largest ever at Byrd Stadium. The announced crowd of 52,827 for the game against BC (Nov. 10) marked the seventh-highest in stadium history. The Terps also had a crowd of 51,620 for the 2008 Florida State game and had a sellout for last season’s Virginia Tech contest. • Maryland’s six-game 2007 home attendance to-taled 307,580. Maryland averaged 51,263 fans per game that season, the third-highest amount in school history. The Terps have now averaged over 50,000 fans at home in four of the past six seasons.

TAKING HOME THE HARDWARE...The Touchdown Club of Annapolis presented the Crab Bowl Trophy to Maryland after its victory over Navy. The trophy will be presented for all subse-quent meetings. The Touchdown Club of Annapolis, founded in 1954, has an extensive history with both Navy and Maryland, honoring both teams at its annual banquet. Commissioned by the club with underwriting from the D’Camera Group, the Crab Bowl is a large pewter bowl overfl owing with pewter replicas of the Chesapeake Bay blue crab. The Crab Bowl sits atop an ebony-colored mahogony base that is engraved with the results of previous Maryland-Navy games.

TERPS AND THE NFL DRAFT...• There are currently 30 players on NFL rosters (see list on pg. 19), including 27 who are active (three on practice squads). The 27 active players on rosters ranks tied for second among ACC schools. Miami has 42 players active in the NFL and Florida State has 27.• There have been 24 Terps drafted during Ralph Friedgen’s tenure as head coach. There have also been 57 players either drafted or signed as free agents over the last seven seasons.• Maryland had two players selected in the 2010 NFL Draft - OT Bruce Campbell (Oakland, fourth round) and Nolan Carroll (Miami, fi fth round) - and fi ve players se-lected the year before (WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, CB Kevin Barnes, LB Moise Fokou, OL Jaimie Thomas, and TE Dan Gronkowski), which was the most since 2004 when the Terps also had fi ve players chosen. The fi ve selections were also the most for an ACC school in 2009.• The Terps have had at least two players selected in seven of the last nine drafts.• The Terrapins have had 15 players chosen in the fi rst round of the NFL Draft, including two Top-10 picks in the last fi ve years. Darrius Heyward-Bey was taken seventh overall in 2009 (Oakland Raiders) and Vernon Davis was selected sixth in 2006 (San Francisco 49ers).

TERP ALLEY...• In an effort to restore some tradition on gameday in College Park, head coach Ralph Friedgen created Terp Alley in 2001, a tradition that has become a part of the gameday experience outside Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium.• For every football home game, the entire football team makes its fi rst appearance of the day at “Terp Alley.” The team is dropped off at the circle at the top of Field House Drive (between the football press box and Ludwig Field) approximately two hours be-fore kickoff and is led past fans gathered along the street to the football complex by the Maryland band and cheerleaders.

TERRAPIN SPORTS RADIO NETWORK All of Maryland’s football games will be broadcast liveon the Terrapin Sports Radio Network, which boasts oneof the strongest coverage areas in college sports. Terrapin Sports Marketing (TSM), a division of CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, manages the radio network. In its ninth year as the multi-media marketing rights part-ner for University of Maryland Athletics, Terrapin Sports Marketing has built a stronger network that provides cov-erage in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. WJZ-FM 105.7 and WJZ-AM 1300 in Baltimore serve as network’s flagship stations, with 13 more affiliates across the state picking up the games. In July 2010, ESPN980 became the home for Terps football in Washington, D.C. All games will be “trimul-cast” throughout the D.C. metropolitan area, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia on 980-AM (WTEM), 92.7FM (WWXT) and 94.3FM (WWXX). Maryland’s broadcasts will be accessible on the Internet via the Terps’ offi cial website, www.umterps.com.

ESPN980 - NEW D.C. HOME FOR TERPS...The University of Maryland athletics department, Ter-rapin Sports Marketing, and Red Zebra Broadcasting announced on July 1 a multi-year agreement in which ESPN980 will become the new Washington, D.C., af-fi liate for the Terrapin Sports Radio Network (TSRN) beginning with the 2010 football season. ESPN980 can be heard “trimulcast” throughout the D.C. met-ropolitan area, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia on 980-AM (WTEM), 92.7FM (WWXT) and 94.3FM (WWXX). ESPN980 has been the sports voice of the Nation’s Capital for 18 years and is the radio home of the Washington Redskins. Starting in 2010-11, Maryland football and men’s basketball games, including postseason contests, will be heard in Washington, D.C., almost exclusively on ESPN980. In the infrequent event of broadcast confl icts with the Redskins, Maryland Athletics and ESPN980 will ag-gressively promote alternate stations where the Terps will be heard in the D.C. listening area. ESPN980 has also agreed to carry additional Maryland Athletics radio programming, including football and basketball pregame and postgame shows, The Gary Williams Radio Show, and The Ralph Friedgen Radio Show. Red Zebra stations will also carry select women’s basketball and men’s lacrosse broadcasts. Hall of Famer Johnny Holliday will return for his 32nd year as the play-by-play voice of the Terrapins for both football and men’s basketball.

FRIEDGEN AND THE TERPS ON THE AIR...Maryland’s football broadcasting lineup for 2010 in-cludes the Ralph Friedgen Radio Show and the Ralph Friedgen Television Show. The Ralph Friedgen Radio Show airs from 8-9 p.m. each Wednesday during the season on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network (see adjoining chart for affi liates) which has 14 affi liates this season. The Ralph Friedgen Television Show, which is presented by Outback Steakhouse, airs weekly at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic with the fi rst show airing this weekend. The fast-paced, 30-minute show goes behind the scenes with Friedgen and the Maryland football team. Replays of the show are scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday on Comcast SportsNet, just prior to the rebroadcast of the Terps most recent football game. Comcast SportsNet will carry the offi cial rebroadcasts of all 12 University of Maryland football matchups. Friedgen also appears each Wednesday during the season on Comcast’s SportsNite wrap-up show. Comcast goes live “Inside the Coach’s Offi ce” with Friedgen at 6:45 p.m. each Wednesday.

TERRAPINS RISING AIRED FOR FOURTH YEAR...The fourth season of `Terrapins Rising’ aired this summer. The eight-episode reality series, which chronicles the Maryland football program, was shown locally on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and around the country. Each 30-minute show gives a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of a major college football program. This season’s series followed head coach Ralph Friedgen and his staff as they prepared the Terps for the 2010 campaign. Each episode of the show featured in-depth player and coach profiles, as well as footage of heated position battles from spring practice and off-season workouts. A film crew, led by former University of Maryland and Washington Redskins place-kicker Jess Atkinson, followed the team both on and off the field. The crew also sits in on team and posi-tional meetings. `Terrapins Rising’ is the result of a partnership between Maryland Athletics, Comcast SportsNet, Under Armour and Atkinson & Co.

FRIEDGEN AND THE TERPS ON THE AIR...Maryland’s football broadcasting lineup for 2010 in-cludes the Ralph Friedgen Radio Show and the Ralph Friedgen Television Show. The Ralph Friedgen Radio Show airs from 8-9 p.m. each Wednesday during the season on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network which has 15 affi liates (see chart on pg. 8 for affi liates). The Ralph Friedgen Television Show, which is presented by Outback Steakhouse, airs weekly at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic with the fi rst show airing this weekend. The fast-paced, 30-minute show goes behind the scenes with Fried-gen and the Maryland football team.

‘FLAG DOWN IN THE END ZONE’...Beginning for the 2008 season, Maryland Athlet-ics debuted new end zone graphics, prominently featuring the state fl ag. It is the only known use of a state fl ag in an end zone in the country. The change – previously the words “Maryland” and “Terrapins” were painted in the end zone – was prompted by two factors: 1) Increasing fan requests. Marylanders have always been fi ercely proud of the state fl ag, and have asked for years to use it in the end zone; and 2) Show of state pride. Like head coach Ralph Friedgen’s tradition of proudly carrying the Maryland fl ag onto the fi eld during the team introduction, the

end zone graphics represent an effort to instill a sense of pride in the state and the state’s fl agship campus to recruits, fans and supporters. The Maryland fl ag contains the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families. Maryland was founded as an English colony in 1634 by Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. The black and gold designs belong to the Calvert fam-ily. The red and white design belongs to the Crossland family. The fl ag was adopted in 1904.

Page 11: Maryland at No. 21 West Virginia · The Terps now set their sites on nationally-ranked West Virginia. Maryland and WVU have a long history together, having met 46 times, though not

• Friedgen has a 68-46 record in nine years, including the fi rst back-to-back-to-back 10-win seasons in school history (10-2 in 2001, 11-3 in 2002 and 10-3 in 2003).

• The consensus national coach of the year in 2001 when he led Maryland to its fi rst ACC title in 16 years, Friedgen has guided the Terrapins to six bowl game appearances, including a school-record four postseason wins. He is one of seven coaches in ACC history with four or more bowl wins and one of 11 with six or more bowl game appearances.

• Friedgen’s 68 wins are more than the Terps had (60) in the 15 years prior to his arrival. The victory total ranks fourth in school history, as does his winning percentage (.593).

• Four of the school’s 13 nine-win seasons have come in Friedgen’s nine years as head coach.

• Maryland was among the best in 2008 playing ranked opponents. The Terps went 4-1 vs. ranked foes (AP poll) with wins vs. No. 23 Cal, No. 20 Clemson, No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 17 UNC. The Terps were one of only five teams in the nation (also Florida, Oklahoma, USC and Texas) to beat at least four top 25 teams. The other four all finished in the top five of the final polls.

• During 2007, the Terps defeated two top 10 teams (No. 10 Rutgers, No. 8 Boston College). The Terps had never beaten two Top 10 teams in the same season. They were also one of only four teams in the nation (LSU, Kentucky and Illinois) to accomplish that feat in 2007.

• The Terps posted a school-record three-straight bowl wins (2003, 04, 06), culminating with a 24-7 triumph over Purdue in the 2006 Champs Sports Bowl. The Terps have out-scored their last five bowl foes by a 151-83 margin.

• Maryland posted a school record-tying 11-victory season in 2002, when the Terps won 10 of their last 11 games. Only the 1976 team won as many games.

• Maryland was joined by only four other Division I-A schools - Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma, Texas and Washington State - to have won as many as 10 games in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 seasons.

• A Top 20 final ranking in both major national polls for three straight years (2001-03). Maryland ended 2003 ranked 17th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ poll and 20th by the Associated Press. In 2002, the Terps were ranked 13th in both polls, and in 2001 the team finished 10th in the ESPN/USA Today poll and 11th in the AP. It was the program’s best three-year final rankings since 1974-76 (when the Terps finished 13th, 13th and eighth).

• After seven years as the Terps’ head coach, Friedgen ranked the third-most successful seventh-year coach in ACC history, with his 56-31 mark eclipsing those of league mentors Dick Sheridan, Tommy Bowden, Bill Dooley and Mack Brown.

• He is the second-most successful sixth-year coach in ACC history, with his 50-24 mark (through the end of 2006) eclipsing those of such former league mentors as Bobby Ross and Lou Holtz. Friedgen is currently 19th among all active coaches for Football Bowl Division (formerly

Division I-A) victories.• In his first four years, Friedgen set the ACC record for wins

(36) by a fourth-year head coach. He tied for second in the ACC in wins by a fifth-year coach.

• Bowl appearances in six of his nine seasons, including dominating wins in the 2004 Toyota Gator Bowl (41-7 over West Virginia) and a 2002 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl victory over perennial national power Tennessee (a team ranked fifth in the two major preseason polls). The Terrapins also earned a BCS Orange Bowl berth during the 2001 cam-paign.

• Friedgen led the Terps to the 2001 ACC title when the Terps became the first team other than Florida State to win an outright league title since the Seminoles joined the conference.

• By winning the 2001 ACC title, Friedgen became the first mentor in conference history to win the championship in his first year as a head coach. He also tied the mark of 10-2 set by Ken Hatfield (Clemson) in 1990, the best record ever by an ACC coach in his first season.

• 41 wins in 58 games at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, where the Terps averaged a school-record 52,426 fans in 2005 and 51,263 in 2007.

• Three of the last nine ACC Defensive Players of the Year.• 52 national television appearances, including a school-

record eight showings in 2002. The Terrapins played on national television or ABC regional six times in 2005, 2006 and 2007, eight times in 2008, and once in 2009.

• The program’s first major national award winner since 1974 in linebacker E.J. Henderson, a two-time consensus first team All-American who was named the winner of the Dick Butkus Award (nation’s outstanding linebacker) and the Chuck Bednarik Trophy (nation’s outstanding defen-sive player) in 2002.

• Back-to-back school records in number of first team All-ACC performers in 2001 (7) and 2002 (8), and an ACC-best 13 overall all-league honors in 2001 and nine in 2008.

• A league-best 14 representatives on the Academic All-ACC teams during a two-year span (eight in 2008; six in 2007).

• 33 weeks in at least one of the country’s two major Top 25 polls, including a streak of seven consecutive weeks at the start of the 2004 season.

• The only consensus national coach of the year award (2001) in Maryland football history. He was one of 20 coaches around the nation on the watch list for the 2008 Paul `Bear’ Bryant Coach of the Year Award.

• 21 of the top 28 all-time largest crowds at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium have come during the last nine seasons.

• Back-to-back school scoring records (2001 and 2002) and a two-year team scoring average of more than 33 points per game in those seasons.

• A NCAA-low four passing touchdowns allowed in 2005. The defense also had four straight seasons (2001-2004) in which it allowed 20 points or less a contest.

• In his nine seasons, the Terps have earned 44 Academic All-ACC honors and 19 All-America accolades, including two first-teamers (Vernon Davis and D’Qwell Jackson) in 2005.

BALTIMORE - Navy dominated the time of possession, outgained Maryland by nearly 200 yards and made 15 more first downs. None of this lessened the enjoyment the Terrapins derived from their 17-14 victory. Kenny Tate stopped Ricky Dobbs at the goal line with 34 seconds left, and Maryland stunned their in-state rivals to break a seven-game losing streak that began last October. The Midshipmen (0-1) held the ball for nearly 19 minutes longer than Maryland (1-0), amassed 485 yards and collected 26 first downs. But in a game influenced by untimely turnovers and huge penalties, the outcome was decided by a gritty goal-line stand. Trailing 17-14 with a fourth down at the 1, Navy decided to go for the win. Dobbs took the snap, went to his left and was met by Tate, who would not relent to the momentum Dobbs brought to the line. Maryland raced to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then held on behind a defense that repeatedly excelled after Navy got inside the 20. The Midshipmen had a 7 1/2-minute edge in time of posses-sion in the first half, yet trailed 14-7 after coming up empty on drives of 52, 63 and 66 yards. In the second half, Dobbs lost a fumble at the Maryland 1 and was stuffed by Tate on the game’s pivotal play. Dobbs ran for 63 yards and a touchdown, but the senior quarterback fumbled three times -- losing two of them at the Maryland 1. Navy didn’t punt until early in the fourth quarter, and the short kick was returned 57 yards by Tony Logan to the Navy 16. Maryland promptly fumbled the ball away on a missed exchange. The Midshipmen pulled even at 14 with 1:52 left in the third quarter when Dobbs scored from the 1 on a drive that began with wide receiver Greg Jones running 53 yards on a reverse. A crowd of 69,348 showed up for the second meeting between the teams since 1965.

GAME1Sept. 6, 2010

Maryland 17, Navy 14

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With Maryland coming off an emo-tional win and playing with only four days rest, coach Ralph Friedgen was worried about how the Terrapins would fare against in-state foe Morgan State. He got the answer rather quickly. Maryland scored on its first three possessions Saturday night, and the Terrapins enjoyed their highest-scoring perfor-mance in 35 years with a 62-3 rout. Despite the quick turnaround following Monday’s win over Navy, the Terrapins reached the 62-point mark for the first time since a 62-24 blowout against Virginia on Nov. 22, 1975. It was also Maryland’s largest victory margin since a 61-0 win over the Citadel on Sept. 13, 2003. Maryland has already matched its victory total from last season and owns its first winning streak since 2008. Morgan State (1-1) gained only six yards in the first half and finished with 85 - the fewest allowed by Maryland since Friedgen arrived in 2001. Morgan State’s lone score came on a 39-yard field goal by Kemar Scarlett in the third quarter. Maryland backup quarterback Danny O’Brien entered for starter Jamarr Robinson in the second quarter with the score 24-0. On his third play, O’Brien unleashed his first career throw: a 27-yard touchdown pass to wide-open tight end Matt Furstenburg. A 37-yard punt return by Tony Logan led to a 24-yard TD pass from O’Brien to Torrey Smith, and O’Brien closed out Maryland’s prolific first half by connecting with running back Da’Rel Scott on a 22-yard score. Robinson also had his first game with multiple touchdown passes, connecting with Smith on a 5-yarder and Adrian Cannon for 19 yards to end Maryland’s first two possessions. Late in the first quarter, a 6-yard punt by the Bears set up a 47-yard field goal by Travis Baltz for a 17-0 lead. With the Bears backed up on their own 11, Maryland’s Demetrius Hartsfield intercepted a Dickerson pass at the 14 and coasted into the end zone for a 24-0 lead.
