Terps Recycle: 2019 Year in Review 2019 Recycling Rates: Glass No Longer Recyclable: 80.64% - Institutional Diversion Rate (includes construction & demolition debris) 46.49% - Individual Recycling Rate (Maryland Recovery Act (MRA) materials) During the summer of 2019, the processor of UMD’s recyclable material stated they will no longer accept glass. The economics and logistics of glass recycling has led many collection and processing programs, both locally and nation- ally, to stop accepting glass in the mixed recycling collections. UMD remains committed to our recycling program and we are researching opportunities to continue to divert glass from the landfill. In the interim, however, all glass products should be disposed in the trash/landfill waste bins. Compost Collection in Suites & Apartments: Begining Fall 2019, the opportunity to drop-off compostables became available for students living in campus suites & apartments. This program, developed by FM, DRL, and DRF, provides interested students with plastic collection bins that are saved from campus dining halls for reuse. The program suggests keeping the collection bin in the freezer to prevent odor or pests. Drop-off locations are now in the lobbies of Annapolis Hall and Leon- ardtown Community Center to serve students living in these communi- ties. The opportunity to compost is now available in 32 campus residence halls!

New Informational Posters:In collaboration with the Creative Services team of Resident Life, the university devel-oped new informational posters for compost, recycle, and landfill. These new post-ers have been installed in all campus residence halls and several administrative and academic buildings. An on-going project during 2020 is continuing to install these new posters throughout campus.

New Student Welcome BBQ

UMD once again placed #1 in the state of Maryland in the Diversion category with a rate of 49.57%. Our national ranking increased from #41 in 2018 to #35 (out of 159) in 2019!The sixth annual Recycle This! video contest received six vid-eo submissions. $300 in Terrapin Express points was awarded to the grand prize winner!The annual shredding and e-Waste collection event shred-ded 8,250 lbs of sensative documents and collected hundrd of pounds of electronics for recycling.

RecycleMania

This year’s Welcome BBQ that occured in conjuntion with the President’s Welcome was a Zero Waste Event! All disposable items served were either compostable or recyclable! No landfill waste was generated during this event!
