LSU UPCOMING MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA CALENDAR

WHO TO CONTACT

ON THE INTERNET

Frank William “Will” Wade was named the 22nd head men’s basketball coach at LSU on March 20, 2017. He comes to LSU after a two-year stint as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth University with four years of very successful experience as a head basketball coach. Wade was introduced to LSU fans in a most unique way for an introduction of a Tiger coach -- at a special media event held in the middle of the LSU Student Union. Wade told the media and a large contingent of LSU students: “I am so excited about the opportunity to lead this program and LSU Basketball back to the top of the SEC and back to regular, consistent NCAA Tournament appearances. We have been to four Final Fours. We have been to 21 NCAA Tournaments. We have 10 SEC Championships, and we are going to add to all three of those categories over our tenure here. “We are going to have players, staff members, everyone in our program is going to be committed to doing what it takes to make LSU the best basketball program that it can be. We are going to have unwavering commitment to put the team first, to put the state first, to put our school first to represent all of these folks in a first-class fashion. We are going to be a hardworking team that represents this great university that represents this great state,” Wade said. LSU and its fans are not looking for a rebuilding program, but taking the foundation and making it solid again – a change of culture that gives the program a look of consistency year-after-year. Wade, one of the youngest coaches in Division I at 34, but one of the most energetic showed his recruiting chops early with a class for the 2017-18 season that was ranked 16th in college basketball in the composite recruiting rankings. Wade’s recruiting chops and promotional ideas has created a buzz in the pre-season that hasn’t been seen too often and the Coach has done his part, speaking most of the summer on the Tiger Tour and to student groups making sure they feel a part of the program. Coach Wade has been seen on the night prior to football game visiting with folks in the RV lots and on the first day of school was out in a golf cart picking up students and giving them a lift to opening day classes. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, directed VCU to a 51-20 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons. The 2016 Rams advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating seventh-seed Oregon State before losing to Oklahoma. Wade was the youngest head coach in the NCAA Tournament in 2016. In 2017, VCU lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of the 2017 tourney. The Rams were 28-8 over his two years in the Atlantic 10 Conference, posting 14-4 records both

years. The team was 25-11 in 2016 and earned a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season crown. The 2017 team won 26 games and finished second in the league, one-game behind Dayton. Under his tutelage, guard Melvin Johnson earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in 2015-16 while Je Quan Lewis represented VCU on the 2016-17 first team. Mo Alie-Cox was named to the A-10 Defensive Team in both 2016 and 2017. Wade, age 34, previously served at VCU as an assistant with the Rams under Shaka Smart from 2009-13. VCU was 113-37 during that time, reached three NCAA Tournament and won the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Championship. He was part of the staff in 2011 when VCU advanced from the NCAA “First Four” all the way to the Final Four in Houston. During his tenure as a Ram assistant, Wade, who worked closely with VCU’s post players, saw the Milwaukee Bucks select center Larry Sanders with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft (now with Cleveland). In addition, Wade played a major role in the development of current NBA players Troy Daniels (Memphis) and Briante Weber (Charlotte). Weber owns VCU records for 3-pointers in a single season and career steals. Wade is credited with being a key figure in four top non-power five recruiting classes in his four seasons at VCU. Prior to becoming the head coach at VCU, Wade served as the head coach at Chattanooga for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. His first Mocs squad went 18-15 in 2014, finishing 12-6 and second in regular season Southern Conference play. The 18 wins overall were the most by the program since 2008-09 and the 12 wins in league games was the highest total since 2010-11. The team made the school’s first postseason appearance since 2009 in the CIT. Wade was honored with the Anton Foy Southern Conference Coach of the Year award for his efforts in 2014. Also that year, Z. Mason became the first Chattanooga student-athlete to win the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. The Mocs won 22 games in 2015 and finished 15-3 in the league as Wade guided Chattanooga to its first 20-win season since 2004-05. He finished his two seasons there at 40-25 and 27-7 in league play. In the two seasons prior to his arrival, Chattanooga was 24-40 overall and 13-23 in SoCon play. In his four years as a head coach, he has a combined record at Chattanooga

and VCU of 91-45 and 55-15 in conference play with three post-season appearances. Wade’s reputation, where ever he has coached, is a person who is a tireless worker and relentless recruiter. Wade was VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart’s first hire upon being named the head VCU coach in 2009. That reputation was cemented prior to his arrival on the VCU campus. He served as an assistant to Tommy Amaker at Harvard in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Much like at VCU, he was Amaker’s first hire. In their second year, the Crimson went 14-14, the first season of .500 or better in the program since 2001-02. Wade had a hand in the development of future NBA standout Jeremy Lin and assembled a top 25 recruiting class during his stay. Wade’s coaching start came at Clemson where he served as Director of Basketball Operations (2006-07) and Graduate Assistant (2005-06) after four seasons as a student manager (2002-05). There he worked for coaches Larry Shyatt (2002-03) and Oliver Purnell (2004-07). In eight years on coaching staffs at Clemson, Harvard and VCU, the teams had a record of 177-97 with six postseason appearances (2005-13). Wade is married to the former Lauren Deason, and the couple has one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth.

LAST TIME OUT – LSU 104, UNF 52 -- BATON ROUGE, Dec. 22, 2017 Coach Will Wade liked the Tigers preparation for the game against North Florid and on game day felt that the Tigers were ready to go to the Christmas break off a big game and he got what he predicted. After North Florida jumped out to an 8-4 lead three minutes in and 11-10 at the 15:43 mark, the Tigers went on a 34-4 run that led with LSU leading at the half, 54-23. LSU continued to pour it on in the second half with all 13 available players on the court. It marked the second time this season that LSU has topped 100 points, equaling the number of 100 point games the last time LSU topped 100 prior to this season (2015-16). It is the fifth time LSU has topped 100 points since the start of the 2006-07 season. Duop Reath and Tremont Waters led the Tigers in scoring with 15 points. Waters also had his second double double of the season when he had 10 assists for the third time this year. Aaron Epps just missed a double double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Daryl Edwards had 10 points and three assists. LSU shot over 50 percent in both halves to finish at 53.8 percent for the game (43-of-80), and 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from the arc. LSU out rebounded the Ospreys, 50-29 (16-7 on the offensive board). LSU had a 62-16 advantage in points in the paint and an amazing 30-0 output on points off turn-overs.

BRANDON SAMPSON RETURNS With 15:02 left in the first half Brandon Sampson made his return to the court since the first minute of the Notre Dame game on Nov. 21 in Maui when he sprained his left ankle. It was at the 14:31 mark when he hit a corner three-pointer to give LSU the lead for good at 13-11 against North Florida. Sampson, who

was cleared to go on Thursday prior to the Friday game, played 10 minutes and scored seven points with three rebounds and two assists. Sampson was 3-of-5 from the field with that three-pointer. Sampson in the first three games prior to the Notre Dame game had made 15-of-23 field goals and 5-of-12 3FGs with 15 rebounds and seven assists. He was averaging 13.3 points per game. For the five games he has appeared in he is averaging 9.4 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. He is 18-of-29 from the field for the season or 62.1 percent and 6-of-14 from the arc (42.9%).

APPEARS ANKLE COULD KEEP COMBS OUT REST OF SEASON At his post-game presser after the Sam Houston game (12/19), Coach Will Wade discussed that graduate student Jeremy Combs possibly may be unable to continue to play after his chronic ankle injury has acted up again. “He’s pretty banged up,” Coach Wade said. “We may have to shut him down. Medically ... so he can live a normal healthy life when he leaves here. His ankle is pretty messed up. We are not into risk-ing anybody or putting anybody’s … We don’t want him to be 30 years old and walking around really messed up. I don’t anticipate him being back. It’s too painful. You guys can see when he played. He was good there for a little while (after his preseason surgery) but then it started feeling like it did before. He couldn’t practice. We tried to put him in the game for small spurts and it just didn’t happen. We aren’t into risking anyone’s health. It’s bigger than that.”

LSU POSTS LEAGUE BEST FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGES The Tigers have been over the 50 percent mark from the field in 6-of-the-11 games this season:

Alcorn State – 11/10/17 – 36-of-69 – 61.0% (H)Samford—11/16/17 – 39-of-65 – 60.0% (H)Vs. Michigan—11/20/17 – 27-of-46 – 58.7% (Maui)UT-Martin—11/29/17 – 31-of-62 – 50.0% (H)UNCW – 12/10/17 – 36-of-61 – 59.0% (H)UNF—12/22/17 – 43-of-80 – 53.8% (H)

LSU is the league leader in field goal percentage at 52.0 percent for the season (341-of-656), one of two teams exiting Christmas (Arkansas) with a field goal percentage of 50 percent or more. Last year, LSU shot 45.1 percent from the field. LSU is eighth in the NCAA stats in field goal percentage. LSU is continuing to try to improve its field goal percentage defense which after 11 games stands at 44.3 percent, 14th in the conference (165 in NCAA). However, on the plus side, last year opponents shot over 47 percent against the Tigers. LSU has now won seven straight games when shooting over 50 percent, dating back to last sea-son.

LSU INSIDE THE ARC SECOND IN THE NATION As play resumes after Christmas, the Tigers, according to TeamRankings.com, are second in the nation when it comes to field goal shooting inside the three-point arc. The Tigers for the season are 61.3% behind only Creighton at 61.8%. Belmont is third at 61.1% and Canisius is at 61.0%. Mississippi State is the next SEC school in 15th at 58.7%.LSU’s 11-game total is way up from last season when LSU shot 50.2% inside the arc. LSU overall is making 31.0 field goals per game, 11th in NCAA and, up from last year’s whole season average of 27.5.

LSU OUTSIDE THE ARC The Tigers have helped themselves in their three-pointers made this year, 92 three-pointers for the season. LSU is averaging 8.4 threes a game, up from last year when the Tigers made 6.3 a contest. Opponents, however, are making treys as well, hitting 105, averaging 9.5 a contest. LSU is shooting 36.8 percent from the arc (106 in NCAA), up from 33.6 percent a year ago.

THE TIGERS LINE SUCCESS AFTER OFF AND ON WEEK The Tigers struggled for what could be considered just the second time this year as they made just 55 percent of their free throws against Sam Houston on Dec. 19 (11-of-20). The previous worst had come against UT Martin when LSU was 12-of-20 (60%). LSU didn’t go to the line much against UNF (Dec. 22), but did make 8-of-10 in a game which had the fewest makes but the fewest attempts this season. Earlier in the year, LSU was on the mark against Samford (11/16), making 19-of-20 for the game, including 16-of-16 in the first half. LSU’s lone miss came in the first half with 2:38 to play after LSU made its first three of the night. It marked the fourth time since 1966-67 for LSU to shoot at least 95% when attempting at least 20 FT’s in a game:

11/16/2017 – W, vs. Samford – 105-86; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%)2/21/2009 – W, vs. Auburn – 79-72; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%)2/2/2008 – L, at Alabama – 72-81; 21-of-22 FTs (95.5%)2/4/1989 – L, at Miss. State – 79-96; 19-of-20 FTs (95.0%)

Before the Sam Houston game, LSU was at an incredible 78.4 percent at the line, but entering the Memphis games stands at 76.3 percent (171-of-224), third in the conference. That is still way ahead of

CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLES

the 69.6 percent that LSU shot at the line during the 2016-17 season. LSU is making 15.5 free throws a game, well ahead of the 13.5 that LSU made a game last season. LSU has made 36 more free throws than opponents and has 41 more attempts.

COACH WADE GETS FIRST CHANCE FOR HIS 100TH CAREER VICTORY With the win over UNF, Coach Will Wade in his fifth season as a head coach is very much within sight of 100 career wins as a head coach. He stands at 99 career wins and his next win will put the 35-year-old coach at triple digits. Coach Wade was at UTC for two years, winning 40 games. He posted 51 more wins at VCU in two years there and has seven wins at LSU for the total of 98. Coach Wade is among the youngest head coaches in the major conferences this season:

SHOPPING WITH COACH AND THE TIGERS Coach Will Wade brought an event he started in his previous coaching location to Baton Rouge in the week before Christmas as the LSU basketball team and coaches took 25 youngsters from the Baton Rouge Boys and Girls Club on a Christmas shopping experience at a local store. By the end of the event, it was hard to tell who was smiling more, the LSU basketball team members or the youngsters who picked up things ranging from super hero outfits to clothes and toys of all kind and one child who went to the flower section with their player to get a rose for his mom. “I think it is important to be involved in whatever community that you are in,” Wade said. “I have done an enrichment with my wife and I have done it wherever I have been. It is a great day for the kids in the Boys and Girls club and it is a great day for our program. Our guys had a blast and they enjoy inter-acting. It is an important reminder that people care about LSU. Our guys are role models and it is an important reminder for them that kids are watching them, people are watching them. Also allowing us to give back and help people have a better Christmas.”

OVER 20 ASSISTS AGAIN For the third time this year, LSU was over 20 assists in the UNF game on Friday, this time recording 26 assists for the 43 buckets it made. LSU had 29 assists in the Samford win in November and 22 assists in the win over UT-Martin, also in November. LSU has had five games of 30 assists or more, the last coming in December 2002.

TREMONT WATERS DROPS ANOTHER 10 ASSISTS It seems a little amazing that on Nov. 29 in 2016 and 2017, an LSU player was able to record double figure assists in the Maravich Center. Both times by then freshman. On Nov. 29, 2016, then freshman Skylar Mays had 11 dishes against Houston. Then on Nov. 29, 2017, freshman Tremont Waters posted 10 assists against UT Martin. Waters posted his third double figure game of 10 assists against UNF Friday, adding his name to the list of those who have cracked double figure since the start of the 2002-03 season:

11 – Skylar Mays, vs. Houston, 11/29/201610 – Tremont Waters, vs. UNF, 12/22/201710 – Tremont Waters, vs. UNCW, 12/10/201710 – Tremont Waters, vs. UT Martin, 11/29/201710 – Ben Simmons, vs. NC State, 11/24/201510 – Charles Carmouche, at Marquette, 12/22/201210 – Garrett Temple, vs. Troy, 11/30/200810 – Tack Minor, vs. UNO, 11/24/200410 – Tack Minor, vs. Ohio State, 1/15/2005

While Tack Minor had 10 assists in the same 2004-05 season, Waters becomes the first player to go back-to-back double figure assists since Randy Livingston as a redshirt freshman had three straight games of double figure assists in the 1994-95 season – 12 vs. Georgia State, 12 vs. Md-Baltimore and 11 vs. Florida … This was the second of two set of three consecutive games in double figure assists that Livingston had that season. Waters leads the team in scoring average at 17.0 points per game and leads the SEC with an aver-age of 6.3 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game. He is fifth in the league in scoring average. Waters has made 60-of-123 field goals for the season, including 28-of-63 from the arc (44.4 per-cent) and 39-of-48 free throws (81.3%).

DUOP REATH’S 30 POINTS VS. UNCW EARNED HIM HIS SECOND CAREER SEC POW LSU senior forward Duop Reath earned SEC Player of the Week honors for the second time in his LSU career after a huge scoring night against UNCW in LSU’s 97-84 win on Dec. 10. The 6-11 native of Australia made a career high 13 field goals, including one three, and added 3-of-4 field goal attempts to finish with a career high 30 points. His previous high was 23 points and one of those came in the open-ing week of the 2016-17 season when he was also named the POW.

THE OPPONENT – MEMPHIS A new home-and-home series starts in Memphis this year with the Tigers at the Fed Ex Forum. Memphis enters with a record of 9-3 after an 83-71 win over Loyola (Maryland) on Saturday. Memphis made 18-of-29 field goals in the second half and broke open a game tied at the half. Jeremiah Martin led the Tigers with 26 points, while Raynere Thornton added 16 points. Kyvon Davenport and David Nickelberry each had 14 points for Memphis. Martin averages 18.6 points per game for Memphis while Davenport comes in at 13.1 points per contest. The teams have met six times previously with Memphis leads, 4-2, but this is the first home-and-home scheduled since the first two games in January and December of 1972. The teams each won on their home courts and the teams did not meet again until the second round of the NCAA Championships in 1986 in Baton Rouge when LSU scored at the buzzer to advance to the Sweet 16, 83-81. Memphis has since won the last three meetings on neutral courts in 1992 in Maui (70-66), 2010 in Tupelo, Mississippi (70-61) and 2013 in Orlando (76-69). Tubby Smith is in his second season in Memphis and this will be the 17th time he has faced LSU in stops at Georgia, Kentucky and Texas Tech. He owns a 12-4 record although LSU has wins in the last two meetings at Texas Tech when he was there.

FIRST TRUE ROAD GAME For the LSU Tigers, although they have played three games away from the Maravich Center in Maui in November, LSU last won a game on an opponent’s home court on Jan. 4, 2017 when it defeated Missouri, 88-77. LSU lost its last nine road court games last season. The Tigers last non-conference road win came at UAB on Dec. 18, 2014, 79-70. All-time LSU has a road win percentage of 39.8 percent.

SKYLAR MAYS GOOD ON AND OFF THE FLOOR It all fits in doesn’t it – pre-med major; 4-plus GPA and starting guard on the team. Last year it was starting point guard for 25 of 31 games. This year it’s still somewhat starting point guard because in Coach Wade’s system, he believes in having two point-guard types out on the floor to smoothly run the offense through. So far the numbers are good as he is averaging 12.6 points per game (T2 on the team), 4.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Mays had a good run of six straight games scoring in double figures dating back to the last game in Maui before being stopped last Friday against UNF … In the six games he averaged 15 points and scored 18 twice and 17 in another game. With six assists versus Stephen F. Austin, five versus Sam Houston and five versus UNF (last three game), Mays now has posted at least five assists in 11 games in his career, four this season. In the last six games, he has hit six or more field goals four times and in the last three games is 16-of-27 from the field (59.2%). However, in the last four games, he is just 2-of-14 from the arc. His free throw shooting remains strong at 87.5% (28-of-32) and for his 41 game career he is 97-of-117 or 82.9%.

EPPS BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE DOUBLES IN DECEMBER After a 26 point, 16 rebounds game against Houston on Dec. 10, Epps came back with another double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against SFA on Dec. 13. In the two games, Epps scored 42 points and had 26 rebounds. He played 59 minutes, made 13-of-24 field goals, 4-of-8 3 FGs and 12-of-13 free throws. His night of 26 rebounds and 16 rebounds marked just the third time since the start of the 2010-11 season, according to sports-reference.com, that an LSU player has had 25 points or more and 15 or more rebounds in a single game. Epps is also the only one of the three to win the game:

Aaron Epps (12-13-17) --- vs. Houston (W) 26 points, 16 reboundsBen Simmons (1-9-16) – at Florida (L) 28 points, 17 reboundsJordan Mickey (1-31-15) – at Miss. State (L) 25 points, 20 rebounds

Epps has started the last seven games for the Tigers and is averaging 10.1 points per game and 6.3 rebounds. Epps, from Ball, Louisiana, is one of those rare quantities in college basketball these days – a four-year letterman.

JC TRANSFER DARYL EDWARDS Edwards has been a factor off the bench since returning from Maui and has moved back into the starting lineup the last two contests … He has scored in double figures in the last three games – 10 against SFA, 11 vs. SHS and 10 vs. UNF. The junior college transfer is averaging 19.6 minutes a game and 6.7 points a contest, up 1.3 points in the last three games. For the season he is 23-of-46 from the floor for 50 percent and 48.6 percent from the arc (48.6%). He is 11-of-11 from the charity stripe … In the last three games scoring in double figures he is 9-of-14 from the floor, 7-of-12 from the arc and 6-of-6 from the line.

RANDY ONWUASOR After starting four straight games, the grad student has come off the bench the last two games to play a combined 33 minutes and score 19 points, including 13 in the Sam Houston win (12/22). It was his second double figure game of the season and equaled his previous high of 13 against Marquette. In the two games, he was 8-of-17 from the floor with two treys, seven rebounds, four assists and

IS MAYAN KIIR READY TO MAKE HIS MOVE FOR PLAYING TIME? Freshman Mayan Kiir has struggled at times to find the court but has certainly found more play-ing time in the final two games before the Christmas break against Sam Houston and UNF … In the two games he played a combined 18 minutes, scoring 12 points combined with 11 rebounds. He shot 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the line. In 11 minutes versus North Florida, Kiir had nine points.

WAYDE SIMS GETS FIRST COLLEGE DOUBLE DOUBLE Wayde Sims, the sophomore son of former LSU men’s basketball player Wayne Sims, recorded his first college double up December 19 in a 20-minute stunt off the bench against Sam Houston. Sims had 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with a career best three blocks. It was his fourth dou-ble figure scoring game this year and the second double figure rebound game at LSU. Sims is averag-ing 7.4 points and 4.1 rebounds and has started 8-of-11 games and played an average of 21.8 minutes.
