The final top 10 rankings were compiled bya committee of Shore Sports Network’s ScottStump, Bob Badders, Kevin Williams, MattHarmon and Ed Sarluca.

Jackson Memorial proved this season that it’s nothow you start, it’s how you finish. The Jaguars may not have won their division, but

that didn’t stop them from unseating Red BankCatholic as the No. 1 team in the Shore Conference toend the Caseys’ three-year reign atop the rankings.Jackson finished the season 11-1 after capturing itsfirst Central Jersey Group IV title since 2005. In theirfinal regular-season game, the Jaguars ended RBC’s40-game winning streak against Shore Conferencecompetition by winning a 33-27 overtime thriller ontheir home field.

They also emphatically avenged their lone loss of theseason by beating Class A South champion Brick 44-0in the sectional semifinals. The Jaguars not onlyfinished atop the Shore, but also have finished theseason ranked No. 2 in the state in most state-widerankings while also finishing as the No. 1 public schoolteam in New Jersey this fall. Despite losing a qualitysenior class from an eight-win team a year ago, theJaguars more than reloaded to come roaring to thefront of the pack after being under the radar in thepreseason. With a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, sophomore Mike

Gawlik and junior Vinny Lee, returning along withjunior wide receiver/defensive back Kyle Johnson, junior kicker Jared Calhoun and a host of other talent, the Jaguars look to once again be right in the mix in2015. It was a banner season overall for the Shore

Conference with a record six state champions, withfive of them making the final Top 10 in one of the mostcompetitive conferences in New Jersey.

Final Shore Sports Network Top 101. Jackson Memoria l (11-1)The Jaguars won their first Central Jersey Group IV title since

2005 and their fourth state title in history with a 21-18 win overNo. 5 Middletown South under the guidance of Shore SportsNetwork Coach of the Year Walt Krystopik. They also boast a33-27 win over No. 2 Red Bank Catholic and a 44-0 win overNo. 6 Brick for an impressive resume that makes them the firstpublic school team to finish No. 1 in the Shore since anundefeated Lacey squad in 2010. They also set a school record

for points with 423 for the season and had a pair of 1,000-yardrushers in the same season for the first time in history. They losea talented senior class filled with All-Shore selections but witha pair of 1,000-yard rushers returning in Vinny Lee and MikeGawlik, they showed this season they have the ability to reloadfor another run.

2. Red Bank Catho l ic (11-1)The Caseys may have lost their perch at the top, but they will

gladly trade that for the fact that they brought home their firststate championship since 1976. They made a dominating run tothe Non-Public Group III title under coach Jim Portela, blastingBishop Eustace 62-7, routing three-time defending championSt. Joseph’s-Montvale 44-14 and then taking care of Delbarton45-20 in the final. They also picked up lop-sided wins over No.3 Manalapan, No. 7 Neptune, and No. 9 Long Branch and wonClass B North for their fifth straight division title. RBC won aschool-record 11 games and set the single-season school recordfor points scored with 543 to lead the Shore Conference. Theygraduate another outstanding senior class led by Shore SportsNetwork Defensive Player of the Year Jamie Gordinier, but withjunior quarterback Eddie Hahn, junior running back/linebackerDylan Murphy, junior two-way lineman Liam Smith and plentymore talent returning, they once again should be among the bestin the Shore and the state in 2015.

3. Manalapan (11-1)The Braves made history under coach Ed Gurrieri by

capturing their first state title when they knocked off previouslyundefeated South Brunswick 21-7 to claim the Central JerseyGroup V crown in their fourth straight trip to the state finals. They tied the school record for wins with their third straight 11-win season and also won their fifth straight division title. Theygraduate a tremendous senior class led by first-team All-Shorepicks Kyle Mullen, Imamu Mayfield, Mike Caggiano, and DanDebner, but have proven they are immune to graduation losseswith their run over the past few years.

4. S t . John V ianney (10-1)The Lancers had their best season since the early 1980s in

their first year under head coach Mark Ciccotelli, taking homethe Class A Central title for their first division crown since 1982and going undefeated against Shore Conference competition. They also won their first state playoff game since 1981 beforefalling to Delbarton in the Non-Public Group III semifinals. TheLancers had wins over No. 10 Rumson-Fair Haven, the CentralJersey Group II champion, as well as Central Jersey Group IIIchampion Matawan and South Jersey Group III semifinalistCentral, which was the Class B South co-champion. Theirexplosive offense averaged 42 points per game, second in theShore Conference, and returns several of its key players nextseason, led by first-team All-Shore selection Anthony Brown, ajunior quarterback. Wide receiver/cornerback Khalil Haskins,fullback/linebacker Calvin Beaty, lineman Micah Clark,wideout/defensive back Jeff Sheard, linebacker Tyler Tedeschi, and kicker Joe Rice all return next season to form what shouldonce again be one of the Shore’s best teams.

5. Midd le town South (9-3) The Eagles reached their 11th state final in the past 14

years under coach Steve Antonucci and gave No. 1Jackson Memorial a battle before falling 21-18 for theirfifth straight loss in a state championship game. Theironly losses were to No. 3 Manalapan, Central JerseyGroup V finalist South Brunswick, and the Jaguars, andthey had two wins over No. 7 Neptune. With a loadedjunior class led by the Rogers twins, Dylan and Cole, aswell as quarterback/kicker Matt Mosquera, and a stellarsophomore class led by linebacker James McCarthy, thisteam has a ton of firepower returning to finally get overthe hump and bring home its first state title since 2006next season.

6. Br ick (9-2)The Green Dragons won their first division title since 2008

under coach Rob Dahl by claiming the Class A South crown andhanding No. 1 Jackson Memorial its only loss of the season witha 30-24 overtime victory. Their two losses were a 44-0 loss toJackson in the Central Jersey Group IV semifinals and a regular-season loss to Wall. They graduate a senior class headlined byquarterback Carmen Sclafani that made up nearly all of theirstarting lineup, so they will have a ton of production to replacenext season to try to stay in the hunt in Class A South.

7. Neptune (8-3)The Scarlet Fliers reached the Central Jersey Group IV

semifinals in their first season under head coach Rodney Taylorbefore falling to Middletown South. Two of their three losseswere to the Eagles and the other one was to No. 2 Red BankCatholic. Their signature win was a 27-0 shutout of No. 9 LongBranch in which they held record-setting Long Branch seniortailback Dahmiere Willis to 17 yards rushing. Neptune graduatesan outstanding class featuring the likes of Royal Moore, OshaneCurate, Andrew Holland-Samuels and Jaree Parrish, so therewill be a lot for them to have to replace next fall.

8. Shore Reg iona l (11-1)The Blue Devils turned in one of their best seasons in their

history under coach Mark Costantino as they marched to theirfirst Central Jersey Group I title since 2010 and the sixth in theirhistory after reaching the finals for the third straight year. Theyalso captured their second straight Class B Central title thanksto the stingiest defense in the Shore, which allowed aconference-low 61 total points. They have a win over No. 10Rumson-Fair Haven, and their only loss was to state finalistDunellen while playing without two of their top players. Whilethey graduate a strong senior class led by linebacker JamesBedell and running back/defensive back Mike Moore, they

return standout junior fullback/linebacker Doug Goldsmith aswell as junior running back Tyreek McCain and others to gear upfor another run.

9. Long Branch (8-3)The story of the season for the Green Wave was senior

tailback Dahmiere Willis, who earned Shore Sports NetworkOffensive Player of the Year honors after rushing for a ShoreConference-record 2,589 yards, the second-highest total in statehistory. Long Branch reached the Central Jersey Group IIIsemifinals before falling to Carteret, a team it beat 31-6 earlierin the season. Their three losses were to Carteret, No. 7 Neptuneand No. 2 RBC. The Green Wave also had a win over CentralJersey Group III champion Matawan in which Willis racked upa single-game school-record 370 yards rushing, and they beatCentral Jersey Group II champion Rumson-Fair Haven. LongBranch loses a tremendous senior class led by Willis, linebackersHunter Baillie and Brandon Lane, tight end/defensive end JohnMimes, and cornerback Dave Colbert, but do return three juniorstarters on the offensive line and some promising skill talent.

10. Rumson -Fa ir Haven (9-3)The Bulldogs won their second straight Central Jersey Group

II title in two years under coach Bryan Batchler, blankingDelaware Valley 21-0 in another defensive gem in the finals. They also had a 31-10 regular-season win over Central JerseyGroup III champion Matawan. Their losses were to No. 4 St.John Vianney, No. 8 Shore and No. 9 Long Branch, two ofwhich came with star tailback Charlie Volker out of the lineupwith an ankle injury. While Volker moves on to continue hiscareer at Princeton and the Bulldogs lose some other solidseniors, their sophomore class is loaded, led by quarterbackMike O’Connor and linebacker Mike Ruane. They should be alegitimate threat to make it three straight state titles in 2015.

Page 8: Shore Sports Network Journal High School Sports 2014 Football Awards

Jackson Memorial startedthe season as a questionmark and ended it withan exclamationpoint, and a bigreason was theguidance of

2014 Shore SportsNetwork Coach of the YearWalt Krystopik. Ipreseason. For the past three seasons, it

was a dominant Red Bank Catholic team thatwent wire-to-wire as the top-ranked squad. In2010, it was an undefeated Lacey team that

started the year ranked in the top twoand left no doubt by the end. Thelast Shore team to really makethe leap was Matawan, whichwent 11-1 and won a state titlein 2009 to finish No. 1 aftergoing 6-4 a season earlier.

Outside of those who haveplenty of black-white-and-red clothing with Jaguar logosin their closets, no one was

predicting that JacksonMemorial would finishthis year standing onthe top of the Shore

C o n f e r e n c emoun t a i n ,

especially with a highly-regarded Brick team in their wayin the division and state playoffs as well as RBC on theschedule. But when the smoke cleared after a 21-18 winover Middletown South at Rutgers University, the Jaguarswere hoisting the actual trophy for the Central JerseyGroup IV title and the mythical trophy as the top-rankedteam in the Shore Conference for 2014.

It was a masterful job done by Krystopik and his staffgiven what Jackson lost to graduation coming into theseason and the quality of its schedule. Krystopik now hasa career record of 30-13 in four seasons at the helm forthe Jaguars after this year’s 11-1 finish. He also led themto the Class A South title last year.

“I don’t think there was anybodybesides the guys in the room whobelieved this could happen,”Krystopik. “These kids worked reallyhard, and I have a tremendousassistant coaching staff.” “Even last year, no one really talked about us, and we

knew we were a good football team,” said seniorquarterback/defensive back Joe DeMaio. “Our seniorclass told each other freshman year that we were goingto win a state title our senior year. We worked our buttsoff in the offseason, and our coaches did a great jobpreparing us.”

Three-quarters of the way through this season, JacksonMemorial was still sitting in the weeds, waiting tounleash a final month of football that would make the

whole state sit up andtake notice. TheJaguars didn’t evenwin their owndivision, as Brickhanded the them theironly loss of the seasonand claimed the ClassA South crown, butthey finished strong.

Coming into 2014,the Jaguars graduated1,400-yard rusherKhani Glover, two ofthe Shore’s bestlinebackers in KenBradley and VinnyCelidonio, and a hostof other talentedseniors, so the question was whether theywould even be as good as the 2013 teamthat won Class A South, forget finishingNo. 1 in the Shore.

“I thought if Vinny Lee and MikeGawlik, the guys replacing Khani, wereable to step up and have the season theyhad this year, that we would have achance,” Krystopik said.

Those two more than replaced theproduction of Glover, as Lee, a juniortailback, and Gawlik, a sophomoretailback, made school history by giving theJaguars two 1,000-yard rushers in oneseason for the first time. They were part ofa high-octane offense that averaged 35.2points per game for the season against achallenging schedule. They set a schoolrecord with 423 points this fall, besting themark of 403 set by the undefeated 2001squad, one of the best teams in ShoreConference history.

The turning point came when theJaguars shocked Non-Public Group IIIchampion Red Bank Catholic 33-27 inovertime at home in their last game beforethe state playoffsbegan, endingthe Caseys’4 0 - g a m ew inn i ngs t r e a kagainstS h o r e

C o n f e r e n c ecompetition datingback to 2010.

The Jaguars thenavenged their loneloss by annihilatingBrick 44-0 in theCentral Jersey GroupIV semifinals fortheir most lop-sidedplayoff win in schoolhistory and thenfinished the job witha 21-18 win overMiddletown South inthe final. It is thefourth state titleoverall for Jacksonand the first since it

went undefeated in 2005.

This season’s team showed that hardwork and team cohesion, paired with up-and-coming talent and coaching, can tearup the script of what everyone thinks willhappen. Guys who have been waiting theirturn can sometimes be the best solution tolosing talent to graduation because theyhave a hunger to show everyone there willnot be a drop-off in results.

“You look at a guy like Cole Collins,”Krystopik said. “He had to replace KennyBradley not only at mike linebacker, butalso as our fullback after playing tacklelast year. It was a big job to be able to stepinto that, but he delivered.”

Collins played a crucial role in bringinghome the championship by blasting a holeat fullback for a 55-yard touchdown run byGawlik in the first quarter and thenfinishing the game with a diving play tohelp thwart Middletown South’s last-gasppass attempt on the fake field goal play

It concluded a seasonthat began with the debateof whether Jackson waseven a Top 10 team in theShore. Now the only

debate is wherethis team ranks inthe pantheon of

great Jacksonteams considering the

Jaguars will finish theseason as the top-rankedpublic school program inNew Jersey and a top-threeteam in the state.

veryone whoplayed Long Branch thisseason knew what wascoming. Stopping it, on theother hand, proved to be amuch more difficult matter. In his first and only season as the starting tailback

for the Green Wave, senior Dahmiere Willis producedthe greatest statistical season by a Shore Conferencerunning back in history and the second-best rushingseason in the history of New Jersey. Willis, who hasbeen selected as the 2014 SHORE SPORTSNETWORK OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR,ran for a Shore Conference single-season record2 , 5 8 9 YA R D S and a school-record 27 TOUCHDOWNS , helping the GreenWave finish 8-3 and reach the NJSIAACentral Jersey Group III semifinals.

Willis was a workhorse all season, leading the Shore Conference with314 carries yet averaging 8.2yards per carry for the year.

“I’m proud of Dahmiere, and I’ve just enjoyed theride,” said Long Branch headcoach Dan George.

“It’s just a ridiculous season. I think it’s hiscombination of toughness and his eyes that makehim great. You’re getting ready because he’sgoing to pound you and run you over, and then ondefense you’re running up to get hit, and the nextthing you know he’s made a move on you that leaves

you saying, ‘Where did you go?”’

Willis entered Long Branch’s final gameof the season, a Thanksgiving showdownwith old rival Red Bank Regional, needing 250 yards to pass the previousShore Conference record of 2,544 yardsset by Pinelands’ Matt McLain in 2010.Willis racked up 295 yards and threetouchdowns in a 28-14 victory over the

Bucs to make history. His 2,589 yards areonly 16 away from the state single-season record

of 2,605 set by Hoboken’s Tyrell Dortch in 1999.Willis ran for 212 yards in the second half to getthe record after a slow start, finishing the gamewith 39 carries.

“It felt so good,” Willis said. “The last drive(against Red Bank), my coach (Dan George) said,‘Dahmiere you only need four more yards.’ One carry

I got like seven and everyone started going crazy. I wasexcited.”

Willis had impressive stamina considering he alsowas a three-year starter on defense in the secondaryand played as a returner on special teams. He becamethe first back at a program with a long history of starrunning backs to crack the 2,000-yard mark in a singleseason. Willis finished his career with 3,229 yards rushing

“We debated in the offseason about whether we wouldplay him at defensive end or linebacker because he’s soversatile, but we wanted him involved in as many plays as

“The great thing aboutJamie is that he hasno ego at all. He’s oneof the guys, and heworks so hard. He’s always thelast guy out in theweight room and

he never complains aboutinjuries and alwaysplays hard in practice. He set a good

Willis finished this year with six gamesof 200 or more yards rushing and two 300-yard games, including a school-record 370yards rushing game in a win overCentral Jersey Group III championMatawan, the highest single-gametotal of any back in the ShoreConference this season. “It’s his strength,” senioroffensive lineman Andrew Huff saidabout what makes Willis so tough. “He’sso strong that you just can’t tackle him withone person.”

Willis has had some interest from FCSprograms like Wagner, but most likely willplay a postgraduate season at a prep school, according to George. Wherever his careertakes him going forward, he has cementedhis place in Shore Conference history forthe greatest statistical performance by arunning back ever seen in this area.

“We had twonew starting linebackers this season in NickLaGrippo and Dylan Murphy, and(Gordinier) was a calming presence to themearly in the year where he would pullthem aside and let them know, ‘’This iswhat we’ve got to check here and checkthere,’’’ Portela said. “We had someother Defensive Players of the Yearduring my time here, and Jamie isright in that mold.”

It all ended with RBC’s first championship in 38years, and Gordinier was clearly an important part ofit.

“It’s everything I thought ofand more,” he said after theDelbarton win. “It feels greatto prove to the state we canwin a state championship. Wedefinitely stamped it. BeatingSt. Joe’s (in the semifinals)was a great win, but our goalwas to win a statechampionship and that’s whatwe did.”After choosing Miami from among 20 FBS offers

across the ACC and Big Ten, Gordinier will continuehis career under Hurricanes’ head coach Al Golden, who is a Red Bank Catholic graduate.
