to our May Show“These islands seem to create a bond, a certainconnection for most visitors, but none more sothan our artists. For them there is a joyful returnto the challenge. A renewed dance: an elusivechase to pin down their very own Scilly. Thisshow is evidence to each; their success and pleasure. View life on Scilly through the artists’eyes and sense the magic of colours blended, marks made, a composition and story unfolding.A vision shared for all to enjoy.”

The Artists Maggie MatthewsThe colours of Tresco seem to fillyour mind, from the crystal clearturquoise waters to the vivid pinksunsets. I’m always totally absorbed by the fast changing lightand weather conditions alongTresco’s coastline.
These pastel drawings were created“en plein air” focusing on myfavourite stretches of beach. Working outside intuitively choosingvivid colours and weaving themquickly onto the page. My choice ofbold and vibrant colour allows me toexpress the atmosphere of theseplaces I know so well.
Nicola HancoxThis year’s collection takes me backto days spent walking along Tresco’sbeautiful beaches, where timestands still and I can be alone withmy thoughts.
I watch the rise and fall of the tide,as the crystal clear water, withsoothing sounds, gently laps overthe sand, then with the recedingrhythm, draws back, pulling tinyshells and pebbles, leaving smoothwet sand, which reflects all thecolours of the sky. A shimmer oflight plays over the water, buoysbobbing, sea birds running in andout, seaweed tangles and distantviews over the islands. Heaven.
I hope these paintings bring backmemories of your special timesspent on Tresco.
Geoffrey BickleyThis last 12 months has been a busytime, I was delighted to be shortlisted for the David Shepherd WildlifeArtist of the Year, from entries worldwide.
The cormorants are a popular birdespecially on the islands. They canoften be spotted on isolated rocksdrying their wings, I find them full ofcharacter and I like to exploit theirlazy-looking stance.
I’ve seen quite a few curlews thisyear so have included these in thisexhibition along with other favouritesand some new carvings.
Gary LongI travelled over to Tresco from Penzance on one of the last helicopter flights savouring the feeling of leaving the bustle of themainland behind arriving on the tranquil island.
My time was spent making sketchesof familiar locations and also lookingfor new ones.
The weather plays a very importantpart in the way that a place is portrayed. My preference is themore dramatic landscape and themood that is created when conditions change.
As always the experience was memorable.
Tom RickmanI would think that over the years ofcoming to paint on Tresco that itwould be possible to run out of inspiration and ideas from such asmall landmass. But this place hasa most canny way of re-inventing itself and showing me its manyfacets.
The time I spend here in the winter isquite special. The island is left as ifto sleep and I wander around itsempty spaces within its own dream -quite alone within the beauty and my thoughts.
Sophie HardingOur visit to Tresco in January waswonderful as my son is now oldenough to walk for significant distances which meant that we enjoyed plenty of windy, wintry walksalong as many beaches as we couldcollecting sea glass as we went.
I filled a whole sketchbook withdrawings so that on my return I hada large collection of sketches towork from for my new paintings.
My aim, as usual is to capture thebeauty, simplicity and charm of theisland.
Tresco is one of my favourite placesto be and I'm so lucky to have thisopportunity to visit every year.
