The Artists Richard TuffI love the untamed wildness of thelandscape, juxtaposed with almostCaribbean like coastal stretches ofstartling white sands and clearturquoise waters that seem uniqueto this corner of the Cornish coast.

Each painting is drawn out first andlayers of paint added resulting in atapestry of colours through which Ihope to convey the feeling andsense of beauty of the Scillies.

Robert PittamEver since I was a child on holiday in Cornwall, the sea has been an irresistible, magnetic influence on mylife. I have a vivid memory of playingwith a toy truck in the sand andnoticing that the intense shadowcast by the brilliant sunlight was unlike anything I'd seen at home.Something about what, I much laterrealised, was the famous 'CornishLight' made me feel subtly 'different'- more alive even. And where else in Britain do sea and sunlight collidein a more intoxicating, dreamlike way than the Isles of Scilly?

Light and shadow remain my enduring artistic fascination - particularly the way it can evokecalm and stillness - and you mightalso see the ever present influenceof the sea in my choice of subjectmatter.

Amanda HoskinThe paintings I have done for thiscollection are some of my favouriteviews of the Scillies. Memories ofpast holidays spent as a family withmy daughter Hannah when she wassix or seven years old, days thatwere so precious now she is nearly16. In this collection I wanted to revisit those times. I feel this is oftenwhat the islands symbolise for many people. Special memories withloved ones, where time stands stillfor a while - cut off from the hustleand bustle of life, a place to stop, rest, watch and think.

For me it is a truly magical place and I hope very much that I haveachieved that feeling in my paintings. They are special to meand I hope that will come through tothe viewer.

Teresa PembertonWinter storms pounding, wild winds combined with red sunsets in patchwork skies; spring and summer flowers such as agapanthusand foxgloves lingering and hiding in piled-up sands. Grey skies darkening the sea, evening walks on rainy evenings, poppies blowing in the breeze; deserted beachesbeckoning.

Whatever the season, there are unexpected colours in the sea andsky, walks in the long grasses andon sandy stretches – always varietyin the landscape on different days.To visit Tresco in the calm serenity ofhigh summer one could not imagine the winter battles of natureat its most passionate; all this iswhat I try to capture!

Stephen MorrisI am delighted to have been invitedto show my work for this exhibition. All of these five pieces are from ourislands including two paintingsworked entirely from life in the gardens on Tresco. I think theyshow the intensity of colour that weexperience from the light here. In my opinion we have both the advantages of the Cornish light together with the wide open skiesthat I used to paint in East Anglia. I am also fascinated by the detail inflora and nature in general, the patterns in nature intrigue me and Ispend hours studying the coloursand textures in their changing naturalenvironment. I have also includedone of my beach studies to show adifferent aspect of my work, againworked entirely from life just yardsfrom my front door!

Victoria HilliardI have developed my kiln fired ceramic relief pictures over the past30 years. In that time I have movedaround England and exhibited internationally but always came backto my native Cornwall. I love two dimensional painting and drawingbut always seem to get pulled intoworking with clay and the 3D reliefimage, I am not quite sure why.

My clay work, sculptural and relief, isusually studying form, detail, patternand tone. Clay to me is a medium Iuse to illustrate my ideas, whatevermoves me. The ideas are informedby a cocktail of my horticultural experience on Scilly and in Cornwall.
