JUNE 2009 SIVAN – TAMMUZ 5769 from OY to JOY A JEWISH SENIOR ACTIVITY GUIDE VOLUME 1, ISSUE 6 FREE Artist Naum Katsenelson Exhibit Featured at JFS’s Rafael Spiritual Healing Center An exhibit by locally renowned artist, Naum Katsenelson, showcasing his watercolor and pastel paintings, ran through May at the Rafael Spiritual Healing Center of Jewish Family Service. This exhibit, spon- sored by the Mizel Museum and the Healing Center,intro- duced Katsenelson’s poignant street scenes in Israel, quiet streets of Nice, parks of Spain, canals in Venice, rainy roads of ancient Rome, and exploration of nature, which reflect a warmth, richness, and beauty. Katsenelson is a member of the Mizel Museum Artist Alliance (MMAA). This was one of an ongoing series of art exhibits, curated by the Museum, that have been on display at the Healing Center since 2007. Cynthia Heller, Healing Center coordinator, recognizing the healing power of art, contacted the Mizel Museum about having a visual component in the Healing Center. The Museum decided that showcasing solo artists from MMAA, in rotating shows, would be the best use of the extraor- dinary JFS space. Each MMAA artist will have the opportunity to present a solo exhibition, curated by the Museum. The Rafael Spiritual Healing Center is a welcoming place and network of resources, support groups and programs that provide comfort, strength and education on spirituality and healing. The Healing Center offers support for those struggling with profound life changes and integrates Jewish traditions and rituals into the learning and healing process. “We thank the Mizel Museum and the Mizel Museum Artist Alliance for providing beautiful works of art to grace the Healing Center; art that is a source of hope and healing to those who enter,”says Cynthia Heller, Healing Center coordinator.
