Fall 2011 Newsletter From our Alumni Board..... Dear Friends of Penn Ice Hockey: As the Penn Hockey season kicks off, I’m reminded of the things that make the program so great: the people, the tradions, and the legacy. First and foremost, the student athletes are the heart of the Men’s and Women’s programs. They dedicate 20+ hours every week from September unl March to represent Penn Hockey. Current players Bill Matczak and Michaela Flaherty, as well as the rest of the captains and officers have demonstrated very strong leadership throughout the past year. The coaching staff and team volunteers are equally as commied as the players, contribung their own personal me that would otherwise be spent with friends, family, and their studies. Ad- dionally, Mike Reno and the rest of the Penn Rec Structured Sport team have provided endless support for the programs and the Alumni Board. Second, Penn Hockey’s tradions serve as a link from the program’s past to its present. The team’s student leadership hosted the inaugural Club Ivy Championships last year which rekindled Ancient Eight rivalries with Princeton, Harvard, and Brown. The team plans to host the tournament again this upcoming February. The Homecoming Alumni Game on November 5 th will be seventh year that alumni will gather at the Class of 1923 Rink to share a spirited game on the ice and share memories off the ice. Last year’s game featured alumni span- ning five decades of Penn Hockey -- from the class of 1959 to the class of 2009. This also marks the fourth year that the program’s Brian Reagan ’02 Leadership Award will be presented. Finally, the legacy created by the Penn Hockey program builds through the on-ice and off-ice contribuons of our players and alumni. These efforts have helped build a Penn Hockey network that includes over 700 former varsity players, club players, and donors in our contact database and over 50 current and former players in our LinkedIn group. The assistance provided by these supporters has had a real and measurable effect on the program through professional development advice, job referrals, mentoring, and financial support. I want to send my sincerest appreciaon to our past donors for your contribuons to the program. I would encourage alumni to get involved in this network, for it provides current and former players with an invaluable resource they can rely on as they seek advice or assistance with life-shaping decisions. All of these great qualies about the Penn Hockey program move me and the other members of the Hockey Alumni Board to connue our efforts to help the program. Dear Friends of Penn Ice Hockey:

As the Penn Hockey season kicks off, I’m reminded of the things that make the program so great: the people, the traditions, and the legacy.

First and foremost, the student athletes are the heart of the Men’s and Women’s programs. They dedicate 20+ hours every week from September until March to represent Penn Hockey. Current players Bill Matczak and Michaela Flaherty, as well as the rest of the captains and officers have demonstrated very strong leadership throughout the past year. The coaching staff and team volunteers are equally as committed as the players, contributing their own personal time that would otherwise be spent with friends, family, and their studies. Ad-ditionally, Mike Reno and the rest of the Penn Rec Structured Sport team have provided endless support for the programs and the Alumni Board.

Second, Penn Hockey’s traditions serve as a link from the program’s past to its present. The team’s student leadership hosted the inaugural Club Ivy Championships last year which rekindled Ancient Eight rivalries with Princeton, Harvard, and Brown. The team plans to host the tournament again this upcoming February. The Homecoming Alumni Game on November 5th will be seventh year that alumni will gather at the Class of 1923 Rink to share a spirited game on the ice and share memories off the ice. Last year’s game featured alumni span-ning five decades of Penn Hockey -- from the class of 1959 to the class of 2009. This also marks the fourth year that the program’s Brian Reagan ’02 Leadership Award will be presented.

Finally, the legacy created by the Penn Hockey program builds through the on-ice and off-ice contributions of our players and alumni. I want to send my sincerest appreciation to our past donors for your contributions to the program. I would encourage alumni to get involved in this network, for it provides current and former players with an invaluable resource they can rely on as they seek advice or assistance with life-shaping decisions.

All of these great qualities about the Penn Hockey program motive me and the other members of the Hockey Alumni Board to continue our efforts to help the program. We are constantly looking for additional support on the Board, so if you are interested in volunteering please let us know by contacting me or any of our committee chairs:

· Alumni Relations Committee, chaired by Whit Matthews C’02· Mentoring Committee, chaired by John Rooney W’77· Development Committee, chaired by Craig White WEV’02

Although we have many contacts already, we know there are numerous “lost” alumni out there and we encour-age you to send this newsletter on to them and encourage them reconnect with Penn Hockey.

Thank you for your continued and loyal support. On behalf of the other Board members, I wish all of our players and coaches the best of luck for a great 2011-2012 season.

Sincerely,

Ross Giambalvo EE’02 GEN’04Penn Hockey Alumni Board [email protected]

Page 2: From our Alumni Board Fall 2011 Newsletter · 2016-12-08 · Fall 2011 Newsletter From our Alumni Board..... Dear Friends of Penn Ice Hockey: As the Penn Hockey season kicks off,

Just a few weeks into the semester, and the season is already well under way. After more than two weeks of practices and workouts to prepare, we opened the season with a 0-0 tie against TCNJ on September 23rd. With some more hard work, we should have plenty more close games that we can tip in our favor.

This year is our second as a member of the Great Northeast Collegiate Hockey Conference. The GNCHC expanded to 15 teams for the upcoming season, and should be highly competitive. Our team goal is to secure a spot in the GNCHC playoffs this year.

You can definitely tell that the team has a new attitude this year. We are rejuvenated and reenergized for the season ahead. With 11 newcomers, we will have plenty of fresh legs. The team is backstopped this year by senior goaltender Brookes Degen, who opened the season with a shutout against TCNJ.

New head coach Scott Carmack is supported by assistants Marc Baron, Tom Minton, and Ben Stear. The new coaching staff runs a very up-tempo practice. With their help we will compete in every game we play.

Key games for us this year will be our homecoming game against Kutztown on November 5th and Princeton December 9th, both at the Class of 1923 Arena. As in years past, we will also be playing in New York City against NYU on November 11th.

Thank you for supporting the team, and hopefully we will see you at a game this year.

Bill Matczak

From Associate Director of Structured Sport Mike Reno....

Dear Penn Hockey Alumni, Family and Friends,

The mission of Penn Recreation’s Structured Sport program is to enhance the student-athletes’ educational experience by fostering

their personal development through teamwork and competition. Penn Hockey continues that tremendous tradition, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support.

Presently, the annual University allocation does not fully cover the costs of operation the clubs that aspire to the highest competitive lev-els. As a result, your donation has a sizable impact, assisting our clubs in meeting their annual funding gaps. In short, it is not merely helpful to our teams, it is essential. In addition to your financial support, on

behalf of the players and coaches, we thank you for you attendance at our competitions - it’s great to have our Penn Hockey family cheering from the stands!

I’d like to thank the board members for their time and dedication, the coaches for their tirelesscommitment to their players, and on behalf of the Penn Recreation Community, I extend to you our appreciation for your support of our continued growth and progress.

Sincerely,Mike Reno

From the Men’s Ice Hockey Club President.....

Dear Penn Hockey Alumni,

Over the past year the Hockey Board and the mentoring committee have been seeking to develop new initiatives to facilitate Penn Hockey networking and assist current Penn Hockey players in finding jobs. One of our current initiatives is the Penn Hockey Resume Book.

What is the Penn Hockey Resume book?It is a collection of the current Men’s and Women’s Hockey teamresumes with a small introductory paragraph describing their career/ job hunting objectives (i.e., seeking full-time employment, ideally in an asset management capacity).

Why is this a good thing for Penn Hockey and the Alumni Association? The Board and the current players felt that the resume book could be a helpful tool for connecting current players with alumni who may have career advice or leads in a competitive job market.

How can alumni get a copy?We will be sending out a copy to everyone on our most up to date list serve, but feel free to e-mail either John Rooney ([email protected]) or Todd Leri ([email protected]) and we’d be glad to send you a copy. Also, if you are interested in being part of any our upcoming Alumni mentoring initiatives, such as our “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” matchingprogram, please let us know

Thanks,John and Todd

Women’s Ice HockeyFrom the Women’s Captains

October 15 marks the beginning of yet another season for Penn Women’s Ice Hockey. With this season comes many new opportunities, including the chance to play new teams, the chance to participate in several pre-existing alumni events, and the chance to grow and develop our skills as a team.

We have recently hired an enthusiastic new coaching staff of three, including head coach Brett Cole Kauffman. Also joining the team this season is a fresh squad of rookie players, who will make up a third of our roster.

The 2011-2012 season will bring many forms of change for the Women’s Ice Hockey team—from the painting of the locker room to a new USA Hockey regulations. As we enter into our 8th consecutive year in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey League (DVCHC), we anticipate a season of development and success. We are excited to progress towards our goal of increasing alumni relations, starting with our participation in Homecoming weekend, alumni networking socials, and alumni mentoring seminars. Finally, with a recent re-structuring of the DVCHC, we welcome the opportunity to compete against Rutgers University and Columbia University—our first-ever Ivy League competitor.

Opening night at the Class of 1923 Arena will be Saturday, October 22 at 9:15pm, against Rutgers University’s Scarlet Knights. We hope to see many alumni, family, and friends of Penn Hockey out to support our team during this exciting time!
