The Colonials skated to a 6-2 victory on Saturday before picking up its first come-back win of the year, 3-2 in overtime. In the series, 12 separtate Colonial players tallied points while six registered multi-point efforts. Junior forward Kristen Richards and junior defenseman Kylie St. Louis each led the RMU effort with four points each while senior assistant captain Jamie Joslin scored one goal and dished out two assists in the series. Series vs. Penn State Last season, the Colonials faced off with the Nittany Lions in exhibition play at the RMU Island Sports Center. In the lone exhibition contest, RMU skated to a 12-0 victory. 17 of RMU’s 18 skaters tallied a point in the game, nine of which tallied multi-point efforts. Sophomore’s Rebecca Vint and Katie Fergus aalong with junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno led the RMU effort with three points each. Kristen DiCiocco recevied the start between the pipes to pick up the exhibition victory. Scouting Penn State The Nittany Lions are in their inaugural season as a Division I hockey program. Penn State has picked up wins over RMU’s last opponent Vermont and the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Freshman forward Shannon Yoxheimer is the current leader in goals and points for Penn State. The freshman has scored nine goals and dished out four assists. Junior forward Taylor Gross is the current assists leader with 9. She ranks second on the team in points with 12. Sophomore forward Jess Desorcie ranks third on the team in points with 10 (2 goals, 8 assists). Penn State has used all three of its goaltenders thus far this season. Junior Nicole Paniccia has received the majority of playing time with 463 minutes played. Paniccia has a record of 4-3-1 with a 2.33 goals against average. Paniccia has saved 262 shots in eight games to register a .936 save percentage. Coach of the Year Shortlyafterthe2011-12seasoncametoanendintremendousfashion,theRMUhockeyprogramreceivedmorefantasticnews.First-yearheadcoachPaulColontinowasselectedastheNationalCoachoftheYearbyU.S.CollegeHockeyOnline(USCHO).OntopofwinningNationalCoachoftheYear,Colon-tinowasalsonameCHACoachoftheYear. “It’sagreathonortoreceiverecognitionlikethis,”Colontinosaid.“It’sdefinitelysomethingthatIthinkthewholeprogramcansharein--theassistantcoaches,thestaffandtheplayers.Alotofgreatcoacheshadgreatseasonsacrossthenationthisyear,sothatobviouslymakesitveryspecialthatRobertMorriswaspickedforthisaward.”

Distinguished DiCiocco GoaltenderKristenDiCioccobecamejustthesecondColonialsintheyounghistoryoftheprogramtogarnerfirst-teamall-conferencerecognition.Afteranimpressiveregularseason,DiCioccoalsoclaimedtheRegular-SeasonGoaltendingTrophy.Thejuniorgoaliereceivedthestartingnodon28seperateoc-casionsinRMU30gameseason.SheledtheCHAinbothgoalsagainstaverage(1.96),ranking11thnationally,andsavepercentage(.926)attheconclusionoftheregularseason.SheloweredherGAAto1.92inleagueplayandonlyallowed14even-strengthgoalsin12conferencegamesplayed.Duringthemiddleportionoftheseason,DiCioccobecamethefirstColonialevertowinhonorsinfourconsecutiveweeksinwhichRMUhittheice.DiCioccoalsotiedtheRMUrecordformostsingle-seasonCHAweeklyhonorsbyagoalie(five),matchingthemarkthatassistantcoachBrianneMcLaughlinsetin2006-07.

Back-to-Back CHA Rookies of the Year AfterTheaImbrognobecamethefirststudent-athleteinprogramhistorytowinamajorpostseasonleagueawardasshewasnamedtheCHARookieoftheYearin2011,oneshortyearlateranotherRMUfreshmanwouldtakehomethehonor.InMarch2012,theCHAannouncedfreshmanforwardRebeccaVintastheRookieoftheYear. Vinthadthebestoffensiveseasoninprogramhistorydespitebeingbrandnewtothecollegiategame.ShebrokeRMU’ssingle-seasonrecordsinpoints(42),goals(21)andassists(21)asshebecamethefirstColonialtoeverreach40pointsor20goalsinacampaign.Vint,whowasalsonamedtotheCHA’sAll-RookieTeam,broketheColonials’recordformostin-seasonawardsinacampaignassheearnedtwoPlayeroftheWeekhonorsfromtheCHA,twoRookieoftheMonthaccoladesandsixRookieoftheWeekawards.Vintexplodedontothescenewhenshescoredineachoftheteam’sopeningsixgames,markingthefirsttimeeverthataColonialhadscoredinanysixconsecutivegames.Sheresetthelongestpointstreakinschoolhistory(12)andposted13multi-pointgamesandsixmulti-goaloutings.Vintsitsfourthnationallyinpointspergameamongrookieswith1.40andistiedforthirdnationallyingoalsbyrookies.Vint,wholeadstheleagueandisamongthetop10nationallyoverallingame-winninggoals,alsoledtheteaminpointsinCHAplay.Vinttalliedaseason-bestfourpointsinagameOct.21atRPIandalsoassistedonboththetyingandwinninggoalsinRMU’slatecomebackvictoryoverMercyhurst.

ColontinoledRobertMorriswomen’shockeytounprecedentedheights.HehelpedRMUbreakitsprogramrecordforwinsbytheendofJanuaryandfinishedtheseasonwith19victories,anamazing13-winimprovementfromthepriorseason.Despitebeingpickedtofinishlastintheleagueafterthelossoftheprogram’sall-timeleadingscorer,RMUpostedthehighest-everfinishinleagueplayunderColontino’sguidance,withthemostCHAwinsandpointsever,andalsoresetschoolrecordsforlongestwinningstreakandlongestunbeatenstreakduringthecourseoftheseason.

RMUenteredthe2012CHATournamentasthesecondseed,butwithtop-seededMercyhursthavingwonninestraighttournamenttitles,theLakerswereclearlystilltheteamtobeat.AfterdispatchingofNiagarainthesemifinals,RobertMorrisandMercyhurstmetwiththechampionshipontheline.TheColonialsopenedupatwo-goalleadwithinthefirst12minutesandneverletMercyhurstpullevenasRMUheldonfora3-2wintodethronethelongtimeCHAchampions.

RobertMorris’successoccurredduetodramaticimprovementsonbothendsoftheice.RMUbrokethesingle-seasonschoolrecordsforbothoverallgoalsandgoalspergameasitaveragedoveronegoalpergamemorethanlastseason.TheColonials’progressonthedefensiveendwasevenmoreevidentasRMUwasoneofeightsquadsnationallytoallowfewerthantwogoalspergameasRobertMorrisallowedapproximately1.90goalspergamefewerthanitconcededduringthe2010-11season.
