Voluminous, free-owing silks with organic lines, oral print with a technological twist, embellishmentconstructed in metal pieces, all in a variety of romantic, muted colours, and controlled in regimental royalty is:

When thinking of fashion inspired by QueenslandsGold Coast, Metre Maids aunting metallic bikinisand cowboy hats are undoubtedly the rst thingsthat spring to mind.

But for Gold Coast-based label blanc + delta thepracticality of dress that comes with roughing the sunand sand, need not be lost when it comes to highfashion.

The rst thing I ever made was my formal dress inyear 12.

I can remember going into the fabric shop and thelady told me not to bother trying, says Bianca Daly, the 24-year-old creative mind behind emerging labelblanc + delta.

She said Id never be able to make a dress if Idnever sewn before.

Ignoring the womans advice, Daly made a palepink gown of taffeta and organza, with a voluminousback and beading down the front.

Its kind of embarrassing now, but it was a niceachievement at the time, she says.

Fast forward a few years, and Daly has establishedher own fashion label, selling in-demand garments

that see little time on shop oors.

Daly launched blanc + delta during her nal yearof design school for entry into the exclusive couturecategory at the Australian Fashion Design Awards in2004.

She was chosen as a nationally telecast nalistamong more than 100 entrants, paving the way forachievements to come.

Daly went on to become a catwalk nalist in theprestigious Mercedes-Benz Start-up Competition in

2005 for her Winter 2006 collection.

To date, blanc + delta has seen two successfulRosemount Australian Fashion Week runway shows, including the Summer 07/08 Tears of an Arctic Princesscollection, which featured in the New Generationparade in May 2007, and the Winter 08 Espionagecollection, which was shown in the ready-to-wearcategory in October of the same year.

Despite her apparent success, Daly says shestarted the business without a single connection in

    manufacturing, retail, or design.

Ive really learnt everything the hard way, she says.

I was battling to nd better suppliers for fabrics and

accessories and battling to nd manufacturers thatwere willing to sew something harder than a T-shirt.Aside from having to triumph over the challenges thatcome with running a business, Daly nds satisfactionin what she does, and maintains there are plenty ofgreat things that come with directing the label.

Getting to do something every day that Impassionate about, challenging myself with each newcollection to produce one better than the last, andcreating clothing which hopefully, people can feelgood wearing, she says.

There are lots of late nights and weekend work, butI love it!

For Daly, each season brings a new clash of differentelements, like her Summer 08/09 collection, which shesays was inspired by her Viennese travels.

The collection incorporates muses of ancient Greekand Egyptian mythology, Gustav Klimts artworks, and 70s rock music, all tied together to create verywearable couture.
