RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND - BARAK OBAMA 1

The ancient oracle which is used bymany to foretell the future as well asgiving much-needed guidance forliving in the 21-st century and beyond

was a hippy favourite in the 60s.It is referred to by many writers

and singers of that era, including theiconic Joni Mitchell when she croonsIt was the hexagram of the heavensin Amelia.

Now Shen Chokyi, 44, has come upwith a whole new way of looking atthe texts with a set of cards, visualimages and writings.

Chokyi, who lives in Eskdalemuir inScotland, feels she has been called bythe I Ching itself to undertake the

task which took, in all, 13 years tocomplete.

In an exclusive interview with theFGshe said: I feel I was called [by theI Ching] to do it. I came up with asequence which starts with earth andends with heaven.

Its a very geometric sequence. Itfollows the same pattern througheach line so you can track it all veryeasily. Then I found out thats actuallythe same way that the Mayans dotheir calendar.

It starts with the pure feminineand ends with the pure masculine.

The I Chingor Y Jng is one of theoldest of Chinese classic texts.

The book contains a divinationsystem accessed by the throwing ofcoins, yarrow stalks or, morerecently, by pressing a button on-line.

The answers to questions, whichcould be life-changing or trivial, areread using a coded system ofhexagrams - six short lines writtenfrom the bottom up. Combinations ofbroken (feminine/yin) or solid(masculine/yang) lines make up thebooks 64 hexagrams which claim to

interpret most states of the humancondition on a global as well as anindividual level.

I do really revere where it comesfrom. The roots. And thats what Imtrying to connect with, Chokyi said.

Chokyis highly idiocyncratic work iscalled Zhouyi Zuvuya, a mixture ofthe name for the I-Ching itself and aMayan term for the way in which allthings come back to themselves.

I started doing illustrations of whatI feel to be the image of the individualhexagrams and Ive given them titles.

Some of the titles show the waythrough. The I-Ching is all about that, she explained.

Chinese classic gets a fresh look as artist called to give hexagrams a facelift

    their vehicle plunged into

    a roadside ravine.The 18-month-old girl, known only

as Guddu, miraculously survivedwhen the car she was in overturnedon the Mehtan-Mehli-Phagwarabypass between the Indian cities ofChandigarh and Amritsar, plunginginto a roadside ditch.

Tragically the horror came justweeks before a multi-million rupeescheme aims to fix roads in the area.

The incident happened just 60kilometres from the Radha SoamiSatsang Dera at Beas, where, it isbelieved, the car was heading.

    Mum, Madhu and husband Gupreet

as well as a passenger called Bahadurwere all killed outright in the crash.

Local police said: Gupreet andothers were on [their] way to DeraJaimal Singh, Radha Soami Satsang,Beas, about 45 km from Amritsar, when the driver lost control of thevehicle and it fell into the nullah(ravine). Guddu and the driver,Sharanjit Singh, were seriously

injured and taken to thePostgraduate Institute ofMedical Education andResearch (P IMER) inChandigarh.

The child was laterrushed to hospital in

nearby Jalundhar wheredoctors fought to save herlife.

A worker at PIMER toldFriends Gazette: It is a verybusy road. It has a lot ofaccidents on it.

The current condition ofthe child or who is takingcare of her since theaccident, which happenedin June, is not known.

    India has been criticisedby the World HealthOrgan i s a t i o n f o r un -acceptably high road deaths.

The Punjab in the north westpart of India, where the accidenthappened, is set to get a facelift of itsroad network in the next two years.

Deputy Chief Minister SukhbirSingh Badal has said that IR137,400m (1.4bn) had been setaside for four to six laning of allhighways including intercity roads.

Jrs dream of a just and

    racially equal society has

yet to be fulfilled, a top

    Baptist preacher has

    said.

The comments come on the 50th

anniversary of Kings I have a dreamspeech, in which he spoke of theproblem of racisim in US society.

King, a Baptist pastor and icon ofthe civil rights movement, made thespeech before leading a march onWashington where he established hisreputation as one of the greatestorators in American history.

He was assassinated in April 1968,on the balcony of the Lorraine motelin Memphis, Tennessee.

In an exclusive interview with FG,the Reverend Stephen Keyworth,

faith and society team leader of theBaptist Union of Great Britain, said:

We are still far short of his vision. It still remains to be fulfilled. There are still areas where thebreath of that visionary speech, thedream speech need to beaddressed. He challenged traditionalexpressions of the church and theirconcerns. He challenged theirbehaviour in the light of racial

injustice at that time in Americaparticularly, and in the world. The church has changed but it stillhas a lot of changing to do.King who is said by some to have

foreseen his own death was anadmirer of Mahatma Ghandi.

He followed the Indian leadersexample of non-violent protest.

King was Christened Michael King. His father, also prominent in theAmerican Baptist movement, had thesame name.

He changed his and his sons to

Martin Luther King in honour of theGerman protestant reformer, aftervisiting Nazi Germany in 1934 toattend a Baptist congress in Berlin.

    Baptist core values include:

    confronting evil, injustice andhypocrisy;

    challenging worldly concepts ofpower;

transcending barriers of gender, language, race, class, age andculture. There are more than 2,100 churches

in the Baptist Union of GreatBritain.

GOVERNMENTS, bankersand other corporateinstitutions are growing faton the back of ordinary folk!

Thats the message from anidealistic and dedicated Britishbusinessman keen to challenge thestatus quo and clothe the nation.

We need to develop a new

economy. The new economy istruth. It has to be based on truth, said Matthew Barrett (picturedabove), director ofBreakout Wear.

Referring to the recent financialmeltdown he said: We bought intoa lie, we personally financed the lie.

And his T-shirts carry the messageloud and clear. Subversive slogansinclude: Dont steal: the governmenthates competition! and Stop Warsin Star Wars-style lettering.

Business is going well and his stallsat well-known street markets like

Portobello and Brixton are doing abrisk trade. Among his customersare plenty of old hippies who arere-discovering the T-shirt.

Sometimes people come up andsay: I used to wear T-shirts, hereveals. The corporate model isunsustainable. Its all about localcommerce and supporting it, heemphasises.

And hes running a competition tofind new British designers andcopywriters.

Buying British-made and British-designed tee shirts from small localbusinesses is his firms aim.

    When something

goes bump in themiddle of the nightTHE UK is experiencing thelargest number of sightings ofghosts and ghouls for 25years, according to Canadiannews site, CanCon.

The number of reports, claimsCancon, is the same now as it was in

    medieval times!Cavaliers,

beheaded queens, and phantom dogsall make ghostlyappearances upand down thecountry, it says.

The site quotesa study carriedout by DanielFanthorpe anAnglican priestand author whoclaims there havebeen nearly 1,000sightings in all inthe UK.

According toFanthorpe,Yorkshire has thedubious claim tobeing the countywith the highestsightings with 74 in the last 25 yearsand Devonshire coming in secondwith a spectre(al) 57.

Even the tenth on the list,Lincolnshire, had 24.

Fanthorpes report claims thatdespite modern technology andscience the British, who remain, deepdown, very superstitious andreligious, still refuse to dismiss thepossibility of [supernatural beings].

Down-to-earth father of modernpsychiatry, Sigmund Freud, called thephenomenon the uncanny and put itdown to not having come to termswith death.

Many people experience thefeeling [of the uncanny] in the highestdegree in relation to death and dead

bodies, to the return of the dead, andto spirits and ghosts . . .

There is scarcely any othermatter, however, upon which ourthoughts and feelings have changedso little since the very earliest times, and in which discarded forms have

been socompletelypreservedunder a thindisguise, asour relationto death.

Parents inthe Westoften bring uptheir childrento fear thebogie manunder the bedand fairystories andtales aboundwith ghostsand witchesfrom SnowWhite toHanzel andGretel.

Hollywoodhas made millions with ghostly andsupernatural blockbusters like Lordof the Rings and its prequel The

Hobbit. One of the most haunted places in

the UK according to Fanthorpesreport is Blicking Hall in Norfolkwhere the headless ghost of AnneBoleyn is said to appear with herhead held on her lap.

The apparitions at the hall, whichinclude a 15th century knight, SirJames Fastolfe and a grey lady, oftendecend the main stairs in the buildingand then disappear into the wall.

    BELIEF in God could be

    down to a lack of

    intelligence, a study has

claimed. The study was headed up by Miron

Zuckerman for the University ofRochester, New York, US.

It analysed 63 previous studies andannounced its results last month.

Those reports showed a significantnegative association betweenintelligence and religiosity, it said.

And it went on: Three possibleinterpretations were discussed.

First, intelligent people are lesslikely to conform and, thus, aremore likely to resist religiousdogma.

Second, intelligent people tend toadopt an analytic (as opposed tointuitive) thinking style, which hasbeen shown to underminereligious beliefs. Third, several functions ofreligiosity, including compensatorycontrol, self-regulation, self-enhancement, and secureattachment, are also conferred byintelligence.Intelligent people may therefore

have less need for religious beliefsand practices.

What do you think? Are intelligentpeople non-believers? Do you have to besimple to believe in God?

    A veritable

feast forthe senses- a review ofBring up the

A SIMPLE retelling ofAnne Boleynscatastrophic fall fromgrace would not alone

distinguish a bookfrom others; it isMantels meticulousrendering of the talethat elevates thisstory above themultitude of other

Tudor fictory. - writes JuliaRoutledge (above left).

The climax, which the reader has beenanticipating throughout the book, does notfail to shock, regardless of its inevitability: thisis testament to Mantels ability to dismantlethis oft-told story and renovate it in a fresh, unique form.

Like the title of the novel, the skeleton ofThomas Cromwells legacy is also exhumed, and Mantel places the kings elusive andmisunderstood right-hand man in a cage ofwords for the reader to observe as an eye-

witness. Henry too is intricately portrayed, laid out forexamination with all his insecure caprice and doubts onfull display: his body is like an island building itself oreroding itself, and somewhere within are dark mireswhere only priests should wade, rush lights in theirhands.

Mantels observations are razor-sharp; her narrative is atonce muscular andeconomical.

Writing in a fluent, yetpungent style, her proseis punctuated withstartling originality, andweaves a rich tapestry ofTudor life.

She holds up the crisplight of language toilluminate the past forher audience; they are

like travellers beingwelcomed into thecapable hands of a guidefrom the turbulentstorms of court in 1535and 1536.

She even addresses her reader as we, thus heighteningthe intimacy. Nonetheless, Mantel is both involved andconcealed from her readers.

At times, phrases seem to verge on Eliotic in theirambiguity and mystery; at other moments, the repulsionor affection she entertains for her characters is evident.

So intensely immersed is she in her writing that sheconfessed in a Radio 4 interview to feeling in danger myself.I felt a kind of moral contamination creeping over me.

In addition to the protagonist and those close to him,the sprawling, glittering array of dramatic personae intowhich she breathes life cannot be overlooked, for they

jostle for attention, as though at a courtly masque.

Mantel presents a veritable feast for the senses: thereader is shown the world envisioned by the author, butis then able to select the finest descriptive morsels tonourish their own imagination, in this second instalmentof her Thomas Cromwell trilogy.

Bring Up The Bodiesis so sumptuous with tantalising

historical trimmings that the reader more often than notsuccumbs to the platter of delectable delights on offer.

The novel is suffused withquotidian minutiae, andMantel embellishes the mostmundane details withexquisite language toenhance their tangibility:from Anne Boleyns famouspearls wrapped around herneck like little beads of fatto a glance that slides awaylike a piece of silk overgrass.

Mantel thus captures thezeitgeist of 1536, and distillsit into words, and in sodoing, brings the Tudorworld closer to the minds of

readers than it has ever been before.
