Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Distinguished Alumni Awards were established by the faculty of the College of Engineering to recognize distinguished achievement on the part of alumni in the field of engineering or architecture. Beginning in 2018, awards are presented in three distinct categories:

The Distinguished Alumni Award for Academic Excellence recognizes alumni for significant achievement in an academic setting with an emphasis on teaching, research and contributions to education.

The Distinguished Alumni Award for Career Achievement recognizes alumni for significant achievement in administrative leadership and professional accomplishments.

The Distinguished Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation recognizes alumni for significant achievement in research, design, creation or ideation of an original idea or concept, or achievements in a startup or self-made business.

Texnikoi Outstanding Alumni Award

Texnikoi is an organization of undergraduate students in the College of Engineering that recognizes qualities of leadership, integrity and personality as exemplified by active participation and leadership in extracurricular activities. Each year, the active membership of Texnikoi selects one of the younger alumni of the College of Engineering as a recipient of the Texnikoi Outstanding Alumni Award. This award is based upon achievements since graduation, evaluated in light of the objectives of Texnikoi.

Meritorious Service Citation

This special citation was established by the faculty of the College of Engineering in 1975 to recognize individuals whose sustained and extraordinary personal service have had a significant and lasting effect on the advancement of the College of Engineering.

The Benjamin G. Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal

Benjamin G. Lamme, ME 1888, achieved international acclaim as a pioneering inventor and engineer for the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co., in Pittsburgh. For 21 years he served as chief engineer for Westinghouse. Among his 162 patents were new inventions on railway motors, induction motors, converters and the developments pertaining to the first Niagara Falls power system. In his will, Lamme provided that a gold medal be presented annually to a technical graduate of his alma mater for “meritorious achievement in advancing engineering.”

Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership

This special award honors an exceptional individual whose sustained pioneering spirit and outstanding leadership have inspired others and have had a profound economic, environmental or societal impact. The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated ingenuity, creativity and dedication to improving our world.

Laura M. Ensign

Laura M. Ensign is the inaugural recipient of the Marcella E. Woll Professorship in Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University and vice chair for research for the John Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. She has secondary appointments in the Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology. Prior to joining the faculty in 2014, she was a research associate at John Hopkins.

As a member of the Center for Nanomedicine, Ensign has created several approaches for administering drugs that lead to increased and sustained drug delivery to precisely targeted cells and tissues. Improved drug delivery minimizes unintended side effects and sustained delivery of drugs reduces the frequency of drug administration, which increases patient compliance and quality of life. Because the basic principles of revolutionizing drug delivery have broad applications for improving human health, her research program includes treatments for ocular diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, cancers, conditions related to women’s health and microbiome-based disorders.

Currently, Ensign is developing a topical gelling eye drop that delivers drugs to the choroid and retina of the eye, an advance that could revolutionize treatments for diseases like age-related macular degeneration. She has co-founded a company with mentor and collaborator, Justin Hanes, to develop the technology for clinical use.

Ensign’s accolades include the Maryland Academy of Sciences Outstanding Young Engineer Award, the Center for AIDS Research Junior Investigator Award, the Research to Prevent Blindness Sybil B. Harrington Special Scholar Award and the Maryland E-Nnovation Initiative Fund Award.

Ensign received her bachelor’s (’07) from Ohio State and her PhD (’12) from Johns Hopkins University, both in chemical and biomolecular engineering.

Carmen Ohio

Oh! Come let’s sing Ohio’s praise,

And songs to Alma Mater raise;

While our hearts rebounding thrill,

With joy which death alone can still.

Summer’s heat or winter’s cold,

The seasons pass, the years will roll;

Time and change will surely show

How firm thy friendship O-hi-o.
