INTRODUCTION

KAPOW is a national network of business-elementary school partnerships which introduces young students to work-related concepts and experiences that can be continually reinforced throughout their formative years. The program was founded in 1991 by Grand Metropolitan Inc. and the National Child Labor Committee, a private non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the rights, awareness, dignity, well-being, and education of children and youth as they relate to work and working.

In Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the program is implemented in 60 elementary schools. KAPOW’s system of affiliates brings trained volunteers from partner companies into elementary school classrooms. The volunteer visits the classroom seven times in the school year to teach a one hour class relevant to the business world. There are 8 components in the KAPOW program:

Ø Job and Career Awareness Ø Decision-Making Ø Positive Work Habits and Attitudes Ø Overcoming Bias and Stereotyping Ø Self-Awareness Ø Teamwork and Interdependence Ø Communication Ø Worksite Visit

Through a professionally designed curriculum and a worksite visit, elementary school children learn and practice workplace skills and make strong connections between school and work. The students are brought to the workplace for a site visit where they have an opportunity for hands-on learning at different work stations. Any national program, no matter how outstanding, requires that it be tailored to district and state mandates and other on-going programs. This booklet provides for the classroom teacher the correlations with the eight KAPOW lessons to:

Ø The Florida Standards (FS); Ø The Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS); Ø The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC’s); Ø The Career Development Standards and Benchmarks (Elementary); and Ø The School-To-Career Connections (PreK-5)

These correlations will assist teachers in the preparation of individual lesson plans as the KAPOW program is implemented in the classroom. The Student Career Development Program Standards and Benchmarks included in the correlations represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities students need to acquire at a particular age level in order to effectively manage their lifelong career development tasks in the areas of academic, personal/social and career awareness. ∗ Please contact John Casbarro at [email protected] if you need copies of these documents.
