    CalvinDoddMacCracken(1920-1999),anengineer

    andinventorfromNewJersey,iscreditedwithbuilding

    the first highvelocitystyle airhandler, usingsmall

    insulatedductsto deliver heatedair at considerable

    pressureandhighvelocity.Thissystemquicklygained

    inpopularity,andaspublicinterestgrew,acompany

    cal led Space Conditioning Inc. incorporated theMacCracken Forced-Air House Heating Apparatus

    (Patent 2,488,548) into theirproduct lines. Thisunit

    later became known as the Jet-Heet System. The

    primarymarketforthesystemwasretrofitcoolinginto

    homesthathadlittleroomforductworkorinwhich

    architecturalchangeswereundesirable.MacCrackens

    airhandlerwasbasedontwoscientificprinciples:

    Bernoullis Principle: (DanielBernoulli 1700-1782)Wherethereisdecreasedflow,youwillfindincreased

    pressure.Wherethereisincreasedflow,youwillfind

    decreasedpressure.

    Venturi Effect: (GiovanniBattistaVenturi1746-1822)The increase in the velocity of a fluid stream as it

    passesthroughaconstrictioninachannel.Calculated

    by the Continuity Equation Q = VA where Q is the

    volumetricflowrate,AistheareaofflowandVisthe

    fluidvelocity.BecauseQdoesnotchange,asAgets

    smallerthenVmustincrease.

    Bernoullis Principle

    Bernoullis Principle plays an important part in the

    operationoftheHi-VelocitySystem.Toillustratehowthis

    works,letslookatthedynamicsofashowerhead.With

    the showerhead in place, you create pressure in thepipingandmoveasmallamountofwaterquicklythrough

    the showerhead holes, with the water being equally

    distributedtoeachhole.Ifyouremovetheshowerhead,

    youremovethepressure,andbeginmovingalotofwater

    slowlyandinonebigstream.Ittakesthesameamountof

    energytomoveasmallamountofwaterquickly,asitdoes

    tomovealargeamountofwaterslowly.Theamountof

    energyyouhaveavailabledependsonyourwaterpressure.

    Thesmallholesintheshowerheadcreateapressurepoint

    inyourwaterline,makingthewatermovingthroughthat

    piperetainahighpressureandlowvelocity.Oncethewater

    leavestheshowerhead,itisnolongerunderpressure,so

    thevelocityincreases.

    Thisisverysimilartohowtheairowworkswiththe

    Hi-VelocitySystem.Ourfancoilpressurizestheductwork

    justlikethewaterpipeofyourshower.Ourventoutletsact

    liketheholesintheshowerheadtoconvertthepressure

    tovelocity,anddelivertheconditionedairtoyourhome.

    Sinceairowandwaterowfollowthesameprinciples,

    youwillgetequalairowfromalloftheHi-VelocitySystem

    ventsinyourhome.Thisholdstruefromtherstbranch

    ducttothelastone,andismodiedonlyduetofriction

    fromlongerlengthsofbranchducts.

    Thesystemmaintainsahighpressurewithintheduct

    which results in a low air ow within the duct work.

    Whenreleasedfromtheduct,thispressureisconverted

    tovelocityattheoutlet,goingfromahighpressurearea

    toalowpressurearea(theopenroom).Thehighervelocity

    oftheairleavingtheductforcestheairwithintheroom

    tomixbasedontheVenturiEffect.

    Venturi Effect

    Whenthehigher-pressureairleavestheventofthe

    Hi-VelocitySystem,itexpandsrapidlyandcausesalower

    airpressurearoundthevent.Thiscausestheroomairto

    bedrawntowardtheairstreamthatisleavingthevent.By

    applyingtheVenturiEffect,theHi-VelocitySystemcauses

    thethoroughandcontinualmixingofroomair,eliminating

    the possibilityof hot and coldspotsfromdeveloping in

    thehome.Withotherairsystemsthatoperatewithless

    pressure, this effect doesnot occurto any appreciable

    amount.WiththeHi-VelocitySystem,whethertheventsarelocated in theoor, ceiling orwall, complete and

    consistentmixingoftheairwillalwaysoccur.Toallowfor

    customlevelsofcomfort,everyventhasabuilt-indamper,

    makingiteasytocontrolindividualroomtemperatures.

    Witha conventional lowvelocity forced air-cooling

    system,therulethateveryoneknowsisavolumeof400

    CubicFeetofairperMinute(CFM)foreachton.With

    400CFMatalowstaticpressure,andalargefacearea

    /thindepthcoil,theairiscooledandasmallamountof

    humidityisremoved.WiththeHi-VelocitySystem,weusealowerCFMbuthigherstaticpressuretoaccomplishthe

    sameamountofcooling, removingmore humidity from

    theairintheprocess.

    400CFMisadesignruleforconventionalheating

    systemsandwillputanoptimumloadontheindoorcoil.

    This allows the coil toproperlyevaporate refrigerant

    andperformheattransfer.Sinceconventionalheating

    systems use a lower pressure than Hi-Velocity

    SystemsTM,ahigherairowisneededtoprovideenough

    massofairtoperformtheheattransfer.Inversely,the

    more pressure that the air isunder, the lessCFM is

    needed.How thisworks ison the microscopic level;the amount ofair molecules present through the coil

    determineshowmuchheattransferisdone.Undera

    higherpressuretherearemoreairmoleculespresentper

    cubicfoot.TheHi-VelocitySystemrequireslessCFMof

    airtopassthroughtheevaporator,whilestillproviding

    thesamecoilload.

    Withasmuchcoilload(ifnotmore)passingthrough

    theevaporator,equalorsuperiorcoolingwillresult.An

    additionalbenettomovingmoreairmoleculesthrough

    thecoilatalowerrateisthelatentcooling.Sincethe

    air passing through the coil is in contact with the coil

    surfaceareaforalongerperiodoftime,thetemperature

    isdroppedlowerthanwithconventionalsystems,thus

    reducingtheairsabilitytoholdmoisture.Ourcoilshave

    aunique design; theyare highly efcientand typically

    thicker than coils in conventional cooling systems.

    Withourstyleofcoolingcoilwewillremoveuptothirty

    percentmoremoisturefromtheair.Thishasthebenet

    ofallowinga greater thermal comfort level, even ata

    highertemperature.

    Airvelocitycanbeeitherahelporahindranceto

    thermal comfort levels. While a small amount of air

    movement isdesirable toincreasetheskinevaporationrate, ithasto beauniformmovementover the entire

    body in order to provide benets to thermal comfort

    levels.Anylargeamountsofdirectairvelocityovera

    part of the humanbodywill causean uneven rate of

    evaporationandheattransfer.Thisiswhytheventsfor

    theHi-VelocitySystemareusuallylocatedinlowtrafc

    areassuchascornersofaroom,ortothesidesofdoors

    andwindows.Bylocatingtheventsintheseareas,the

    amountofdirectairmovementthathumanswillcomein

    contactwithwillbeminimized,sincetheventshaveonly

    aneight-inchconeofdirectinuence.

    Airtemperature,humidity,anddirectairvelocityare

    the factors that will cause the most change to thermal

    comfortlevels.Mostpeoplebelievethatcoldairisthekey

    factorforagoodairconditioningsystem.Consideringthat

    thehumanbodyhasanaturalcoolingsystembuiltin,the

    keytocreatingacomfortableenvironmentforthehumanbodyistocreatetherightcombinationofenvironmental

    factors.

    temperatureto 70Fa personmaybecomfortable toa

    certaindegree.However,inahighhumiditylocation,youcouldstillhavetheclammyfeelingduetoallthemoisture

    intheair.Thebodywillnaturallyevaporatethismoisture,

    whichcouldleadtoacolduncomfortablefeeling.When

    thehumidityleveliscontrolledataproperlevelaperson

    canbecomfortableatahigherindoortemperature.With

    noevaporationontheskinsurfacebeingexperienced,no

    heattransferwillbetakingplace,allowingtheindividualto

    enjoyaconstanttemperatureontheskinsurface.

    Airvelocitywithinaroomcanalsohaveabigeffect

    on comfort. When not enough airow is introduced,

    straticationandroomseparationmayoccur.Stratication

    isthelayeringofhotandcoldair;hotairwillalwaysrise

    andcanresultinabigtemperaturedifferencefromoor

    toceiling.In conventionalsystemswhichusethe throw

    anddiffusionmethod,separationcanoccurfromoneside

    ofthe roomtotheother,withtheair closer tothevent

    usually being colder. Both stratication and separation

    happenwhenthereisnomeansofcirculatingtheroomair.

    TheHi-VelocitySystemprovidesconstantair circulation

    throughtheVenturiaffect,neverallowingstraticationor

    roomseparationtooccur.

    icecontrol.WithourAuxiliaryRelayandDry Contac

    when there is a call for heat. When the Hi-Velocity

    Systemisusedtosupplementradiantoorheating,the

    thezonevalves.

    Timer Chip

    Theprintedcircuitboardwithinthefancoilcontainsa

    timercircuit. On some systems(when applicable), this

    timer will cycle the pump on potable water systems

    to ush the water through the system during summe

    monthsandpreventanystagnation.Thetimercircuitis

    equippedwitharedashinglightinthecenterofthecircui

    board.Itisnormalfortheredlighttobeashingasitis

    showingusthatpowerisbeingsuppliedtotheunit.

    Whentheunitisinheatingmode,theAuxiliaryrelayisalso engaged.Themost common use for this relay

    is to start a circulator pump for heating; however, the

    auxiliary relaycanbe used for110volt,24 volt,ordry

    contact operationdependinguponyourneeds.Also in

    heatingmode,24voltpowerissuppliedtotheZoneValve

    Terminalsincaseyouhaveanormallyclosedzonevalve

    withyourfancoil.Withmorepeopleusingradiantoor

    heating,ourcircuitboardreducestheuseofthirdparty

    relays resulting in a faster installation and helping the

    installertodiagnoseanyproblemsinthefuture.

    Whenthefancoilgoesintocoolingmode,themoto

    switchestothedesiredcoolingspeed,eitherHi-Cooling

    orLo-Cooling.Properairowisveryimportantwhenthe

    unitiscooling,andourprintedcircuitboardensuresthe

    motorspeedisalwayscorrect.Incoolingmode,24vol

    powerissuppliedtotheCondenserUnitterminalswhich

    starts the outdoor condenser. This power rst passes

    throughtheFreezeStatterminals,ensuringtheunitisin

    areadystate.

    enabledonourprintedcircuitboard.Thisallowswater

    from an approved dual purpose water heater to be

    circulatedforaveminuteperiodevery24hours.

    The timer processor overcomes the possible

    concern ofwatercontaminationwithin the system. It

    alsohastheaddedbenetofdutycyclingthecirculator

    everyday,eliminatingalockedrotorwhichissometimes

    experiencedduring long shutdownperiodsonwater

    lubricatedcirculators.Thetimeoperationcanbesetat

    anytimebydisconnectingthe110voltpowersourceto

    thefancoil,andthenre-connecting.Eachtimepower

    isappliedtotheunit,thetimeractivatestheveminute

    override,conrmingoperation.

    Evenonclosedloopboilersystems,thetimerprocessorcan be benecial. In a closed loop system, water

    contamination is not a concern, but duty cycling the

    zoning controls will increase the life expectancy of

    thosecontrols. Inadditionto helpingto reducelocked
