Jamia Mosque Committee needs the assistance of the Ummah to further its myriad ofactivities for the benefit of the community. Sending out an appeal for support, the mosqueadministrator Salim Ibrahim said a helping hand was vital towards meeting the goals ofthe committee to cater for the needs of Muslims. He said Jamia mosque held an important place among Muslims and it was looked uponby many for daawa and social welfare programmes which form the core activities of theinstitution. The administrator said while the mosque generates substantial funds, these can barelycater for the growing needs of the Ummah and it was imperative that the communitylends it support to enable it meet its obligations. It is true that Jamia earns a considerable

amount of money but these funds are not able to sustain the needs of the community,he said during the ifar (breaking the fast) dinner for the Jamia mosque staff members onTuesday. He enumerated some of the activities of the mosque which include educational supportwhich has benefited close to 200 students on annual basis. This was the question posed by Sheikh

Juma Amir after the relentless arbi-

trary campaign of detentions and ren-

ditions of Muslims to Uganda. As he spoke,

a woman and her two infant children where in

as three people who were pulled from their

sick beds while undergoing treatment at a Ka-

Speaking at Jamia Mosque on Monday, the

Sheikh condemned the campaign saying that

it is aimed at instilling fear among Muslims.

They are trying to create a sense of fear

among Muslims by sending out a message that

anyone could be next on the line, he said.

The Sheikhs comments came after Muslim

leaders last week told President Mwai Kibaki

and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to break theirsilence about the raging impunity over the il-

legal hounding of Muslims. They reminded

the two principles of their duties to ensure that

justice prevailed and said the government had

the mandate to ensure that all Kenyans were

treated equally under the law. Our message

is that if crime are assumed to have been com-

mitted then let the law be applied equally and

in fairness to all citizens, said Ibrahim Ahmed

times and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected for thatis the Kenya we aspire to live in, the statement from the Nation-al Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), Supreme Council of KenyaMuslims (SUPKEM) and Jamia Mosque Committee added. The leaders reacted with anger about the ongoing campaigns whichthey said was being disrespectful to Muslims who were observingthe holy month of Ramadhan. They said the government was help-ing to turn Uganda into another African Guantanamo, a referenceto Ethiopian where dozens of Kenyans were renditioned two yearsago in a US backed exercise which was heavily condemned by localand international human rights groups. The illegal actions have continued and the devious anti-terrorism

police unit continues full steam in flight as it hounds, arrests, tor-tures and extorts Muslims communities and individual all over thecountry. Of concern is that all these actions are done in an extra-

judicial manner and in total disregard of the law. It is now evidentthat when it comes to Muslims, the law does not apply, Ibrahimsaid while addressing Muslims who turned up for Friday prayers atthe mosque. Why should Kenyan citizens be hounded out of the country and intotal disregard of the Kenyan laws handed over to another country?Have we lost faith in our judicial system? the leaders asked. The statement said the new level of impunity was being carried outin bad faith coming only days after Muslims joined millions of Ken-yans to vote for the new constitution with hopes that the new lawwould end such acts of impunities perpetrated for years by state se-curity agents. Have we ushered in a new era where impunity is themodus operandi of the state and its security agents? he queried. He said going by the mode of operations of the terror police, it wasclear that the so-called war on terror was being used as a pretextto fight Islam and Muslims. When a pastor was arrested ferryingbombs, he was taken to court and also accorded bail. But for Mus-lims, suspicion only will land you in the new African Guantanamo at

Luzira prison in Kampala, he said.Amidst the mounting anger, the leaders called on Muslims to remainsteadfast and at the same time maintain an atmosphere of calm.In the face of the intimidation, harassment and exhortations, wemust remain steadfast and uphold the law at all times while at thesame time learn to secure and protect our rights as citizens of thiscountry, he said.

benefit from this programme Zaynab Abdallah of State House GirlsSchool is set to sit for her Form Four examinations this year.Other areas of support provided by Jamia Mosque Committee in-clude salary payments to Imams, Islamic Religious Education (IRE)and madrassa teachers, financial support towards the sick, buri-al arrangements, daily iftar programme for worshippers at Jamiamosque and a Ramadhan food distribution exercise among othersocial welfare assistances towards Muslims. This Ramadhan, Jamia will play host to the first Quran recitationand memorization competition scheduled to be held on September4 and 5. The competition will showcase the talents in this area aswell as encourage the study of Quran sciences. More than 40 par-ticipants from various madrasas and other Islamic institutions areexpected to attend.Speaking at the dinner, the committee chairman Osman Muham-

mad Warfa commended the staff for their role in serving the Ummahand said the committee will endeavor to improve on their welfare asa motivational measure. The iftar was graced by the Saudi Arabia religious attach in thecountry Anwar Abdulaziz al Souly and Nominated MP Sheikh Mu-hammad Dor as well as various Muslim leaders and other promi-nent members of the community.

    Call to Support Jamia

Today marks a new era for the people of Kenya. It is the culmina-tion of the long torturous journey stretching more than two decadeswhen Kenyans braved threats and intimidations to call for reformswhose underlying goals were justice and a better life for the peopleof Kenya. The promulgation of the new constitution is a historical day, a fulfill-ment of the dreams and aspirations endeared by Kenyans to havea set of laws which reflects their desires. This is the first time that the mwananchi has been involved in thecreation of the new laws, bringing to an end the forty seven yearperiod where the constitution was virtually imposed on Kenyans bythe British colonial rulers. What is now become the old constitution was inherited from thecolonial masters with numerous flaws which served well those whoperpetrated injustice, amassed ill-gotten wealth, perpetuated cor-ruption and subjugated Kenyans. In this process, right from beginning to its astonishing culmination,Muslims like other brave Kenyans did play an effective part. Thelikes of Ahmed Salim Bamahriz, Khalid Balala, Prof. Rashid Mzee,

the late Salim Ndamwe who recently passed away from the pangsof the tortures under the Moi regime-are emboldened in the mindsof many for their role in pushing for reforms to usher in a better lifefor Kenyans. We salute all the gallant sons of Kenya from diversebackgrounds who have played an instrumental role to see to it thatthe dreams of a second republic are finally attained.

As we celebrate the enactment of the new constitution and thebeginning of a new era which many Kenyans look at with a promis-ing future, it is imperative that Muslim leaders continue to play aneffective vital role in the all important process of implementing theconstitution.Having had the unfortunate label of being the most aggrieved com-munity, it is essential that Muslims reap the fruits of the new con-

stitution through the protection of their rights ending the years ofinjustice, impunity, marginalization and discrimination.Without effective participation, some of the ideals which many foughtfor over the twenty years period many not be fully achieved. It is sad to mention that the immediate period before the promulga-tion was depressing for the Muslim community. At a time when thefaithful were observing the holy month of Ramadhan a period ofachieving higher spiritual goals, a section of the security agenciessought to dampen this spirit by choosing to disregard the law andperpetuate a culture of oppression and injustice in the name offighting terrorism. Many have been hounded, unfairly detained andsome shipped off outside the country in full violation of the coun-trys laws. This arbitrary campaign in the holy month of Ramadhandid not resonate well with the spirit of the new constitution. With the joys which greeted the Yes vote for the constitution, it wasa rude shock for Muslims that security agents could at this crucialperiod in the history of the country decide to violate the existinglaws. Our call to the leaders notably the two Principals, President Mwai

Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga is that Kenyans have a lotof expectations from the new law and it is their mandate to ensurethat the rule of the law is fully observed. Muslims supported thenew constitution on the premise that it will stop the injustices visitedupon them and this still remains their hope at the promulgation ofthe constitution. At the same time we should heed the call from our leaders to re-main patient and maintain an atmosphere of calmness. This doesnot signify that we will tolerate the injustice if is still visited on in-nocent members of the community. As the leaders have stated, theconcerns of the community have been voiced out and they will notstop at seeing to it that justice will eventually prevail.Mungu Ibariki Kenya

A Ramadhan primer on the ritual retreat of ItikaafIn Islam, Itikaaf refers to a form of worship in which one stays in a

Mosque as a way of getting closer to Allah.

The wisdom behind having a kind of worship like this in Islam isthat when one is in the world (especially in the hustle and bustle of

today's societies) there are many distractions that cause one to for-get why one is here and where one is going. So sometimes a per-son needs more than just the five daily prayers to revive the spirit. That is why Islam provides its followers with I`tikaaf, the option ofsurrendering themselves totally to Alaah and distancing themselvesas much as possible from all worldly concerns, for a time.

The goal of I`tikaaf is for one to remain in the Mosque and busyhim or herself in prayer, contemplation, reciting Quran, attendinglessons, and such.Itikaaf is not obligatory in Islam. Rather, it is a prescribed form ofworship that is strongly recommended in Ramadhan, and especiallyin its blessed last 10 days. In fact, the recommendation of I`tikaaf inthe last 10 days of Ramadhan seeking out the Night of Decreeisso emphatic that some scholars deem it a communal sin if no onein the community performs it during these days. There are many au-

thentic reports of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, makingI`tikaaf for exactly this duration.Itikaaf contains four essential elements: The one who is performing it. The intention to perform it. The place in which it is performed. The act itself (of remaining in the Mosque for a period of time).

    The one performing I'tikaaf

As for the one performing I`tikaaf he must fulfill three conditions: He must be a Muslim. He must be of sound mind. This condition rules out the performance of I`tikaaf by the insane, intoxicated, unconscious, or very young children who cannot suf-ficiently discern crucial things (a child under about five or six years

of age)). This does not mean that those who fall under these cat-egories are not allowed to make I`tikaaf. Rather, it means that theact of remaining in the Mosque is not considered an act of worshipfrom them. (Similarly, were they to do something wrong therein, they would bear no sin). He must not be in a state of major ritual impurity (Janabah)

(Janabah is a bodily state that requires ghusl, or ritual, whole-bodybathing, occasioned by marital relations, sexual emissions, men-struation, and postpartum bleeding).

Hence, neither a menstruating woman nor one in a state of post-birth bleeding can make I`tikaaf, since it is forbidden for them toremain in the Mosque in that state. Also, a man or woman whohas participated in a sexual union or come to orgasm must performghusl before making I`tikaaf since it is likewise forbidden for them to

remain in the Mosque in that state.

There is no disagreement that the I`tikaaf of an unmarried womanis valid. If she is married, she must have the permission of her hus-band to validate it.

    The intention to perform Itikaaf

As for intention, as with all worship, one must deliberately makeit. If the one performing I`tikaaf leaves the Mosque, his I`tikaaf hasended. If he returns to make I`tikaaf again, he must renew his inten-tion.

    The place of Itikaaf

As for the place of I`tikaaf there is consensus among the schol-ars that if a man performs it anywhere other than the Mosque it isinvalid due to verse 2:187, which means in its related part, for so

long as you may be in ritual retreat in the Mosques, and due, aswell, to the fact that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, nevermade Itikaaf anywhere other than the Mosque.

They also agreed that I`tikaaf in the three sacred Mosques (theHaram of Makkah, then the Mosque of the Prophet in Madeenah, then Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem) is better (in that respective

    order) than I'tikaaf elsewhere.

The scholars differed as to whether or not a woman can makeI`tikaaf in the prayer area (musalla) of her house. The majority isof the opinion that her I'tikaaf in the prayer area of her house is notvalid owing to what Al-Bayhaqi reported about Ibn Abbasa, may Al-laah be pleased with him, in his book As-Sunnan Al-Kubra (4:316),wherein he records him as stating: It is an innovation (Bid'ah) for awoman to make I'tikaaf in the prayer area of her house.

The period of remaining in Itikaaf

As for staying in the Mosque for a period of time, it is the most es-sential integral that constitutes the worship of I`tikaaf.

The opinion of the majority is that intending to spend any amountof time in the Mosqueeven less than an hour can be consideredI`tikaaf. They agreed, however, that it is desirable for the one whowishes to perform this worship to spend at least a day and a night inthe Mosque because the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, wasnever reported to have made I`tikaaf for less than that interval.

Things that invalidate or end Itikaaf

    Sexual union

The proof for this is verse 2:187 whose relevant meaning is ...And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying forworship in the Mosques.... The preferred opinion is intimate con-tact that leads to sexual union, such as kissing and touching, alsoinvalidates the I'tikaaf.

    Leaving the Mosque

Leaving the Mosque unnecessarily also ends I`tikaaf. Basically, ifone leaves the Mosque to shower, eat, be treated for an illness, andthe like, it does not end the I`tikaaf.

    Intoxication

Whether by means of alcohol, drugs, or other substances, intoxi-cation ends the I`tikaaf.

    Leaving Islam

    This invalidates the I'tikaaf.

The commencement of menstruation or Post-Birth Bleeding

    This ends the I'tikaaf.

Things that are undesirable while in Itikaaf

Abstaining from speech as a way to come closer to Allah

The reason for this is that abstention from speech as a form ofworship is not prescribed in Islam. However, there is no harm inrefraining from speech if there is a lack of need.

To speak needlessly or delve into argumentation and conversa-tion for entertainment.

Busying oneself with religious lessons that involve unnecessary

    debate Wearing ostentatious clothing.

    WOMEN ISSUES

    The Friday Bulletin

    Womens worship during Ramadhan

A Muslim woman should utilize the seasons which Allah has en-dowed with great benefit and made a source for accumulating re-wards. A woman can increase her reward in Ramadhan by strength-ening various aspects of worship and obedience to Allah, by being

keen in performing virtuous deeds and refraining from anything thatcould affect the rewards of her fasting adversely.

    Sincerity during Ramadhan:

One of the aspects of servitude to Allah, which a woman practicesduring the month of Ramadhan is sincerity. Abu Hurayrah, may Al-lah be pleased with him, reported: The Messenger of Allah, sallal-lahu alayhi wa sallam, said: Allah the Exalted and Majestic said:`Every act of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting which is(exclusively and sincerely) for Me, and I will reward him for it (The person observing fast) has abstained from food and drink andsexual pleasures for My sake [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Therefore,a woman should refrain from all that invalidates her fast, and shouldguard this pledge that is between her and her Lord from dawn tosunset. Sincerity during this month trains her to be sincere after-

wards in other acts of worship.

    Rulings of Ramadhan:

One of the matters, which a woman must endeavor to learn, is thejurisprudence rulings pertaining to the month of Ramadhan, in orderfor her fasting to be perfect. There are many rulings related to thismonth that concern women, like the rulings regarding menstruation, purity, postpartum bleeding in connection to fasting -- if the bleedingstops after twenty days she must perform a ritual bath (i.e. ghusl)and start fasting, but she must intend fasting the obligatory fast, asthe Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed us that withouthaving an intention to fast prior to the break of dawn, her fast is notvalid.

Adhering to the command of Allah and His Messenger, mayAllah exalt his mention:

Adhering to the commands of Allah and His Messenger, sallallahualayhi wa sallam, during this blessed month is another aspect ofservitude, which a woman practices. For example, a woman is com-manded to break her fast as soon as she goes into her menses, yetshe is not deprived from the reward because she broke the fast inadherence to the command of Allah, and she is rewarded for thisadherence.

Some women become grieved when they get their menses whilstfasting, and start saying things like: Why do I get menses, or Iwished I never got this, or I wish I was a man so that I do not get itand thus fast the full month. One must be content with the decree of

Allah, as He is The One who created women as women and men asmen. Thus, a woman should be content with her decree, and shouldnot have these feelings, because Allah does everything with Ulti-mate Wisdom, the essence of which we can never comprehend.

Bashfulness during Ramadhaan:Women must learn that when it comes to enlightening and educat-ing themselves in matters of religion, they should not be too shy toask questions. For example, some young women are too embar-rassed to inform their families that they have reached the age ofpuberty and thus continue to break their fast and do not observefast. This is a serious mistake in Islam, as a woman is obliged to fastwhenever she is not in her menses. Another example are womenwho are too shy, thus when they have their menses they continue tofast lest those around them would find out, which is also prohibitedin Islam and by doing so they are disobeying Allah. Those who did not observe fast after reaching the age of puberty-- for whatever invalid reason -- must make up all the days they

missed.Despite the fact that some scholars have permitted the use of thepills that delay the menses (if they have no harmful side effects),we believe, and Allah knows best, that not taking them is more re-warding, as it reflects the womans contentment with what Allah Hasdecreed on her.

Attending the Qiyam prayers and study circles:

Attending the Qiyam prayers (i.e. the optional night prayers) inthe mosque is a recommended act of worship. Umar, may Allaahbe pleased with him, used to designate a prayer area especially forwomen so they could attend the prayers without intermixing withmen. It is a good thing for a woman to attend the prayers with thecongregation, but it is more rewarding for her to pray at her house. When the woman goes to the Mosque -- whilst fulfilling the condi-tions permitting her to attend -- she will expose herself to the bless-ings bestowed upon those who attend the Mosque. For example, the mercy of Allah will descend on them, the angels will surroundthem and ask forgiveness for them for attending lectures that teachpeople matters of their religion; saying Ameen after the supplica-tions of the Imam which makes them deserving of whatever theImam supplicated, increasing submissiveness to Allah that resultsdue to the Imams recitation during the prayer, learning the properway to pray and correcting any mistakes in recitation. Having saidthis, it is still more rewarding for a woman to pray in her house whilst

reading from the Quran than praying with the congregation.A woman must be keen to get to know those who attend the con-

gregation with her as some of them could be very pious sisters, who could be a means for steadfastness and remind her at timesof heedlessness.

When in the Mosque, a woman should be ready to receive knowl-edge, learn her religion and be open-minded to accept the trutheven if it goes against her desire or that which she practices. Shemust adhere to the proper Hijab, not wear perfume, not adorn her-self, not mix with men outside the Mosque or in the parking lot,so as to avoid making the mosque a social club and turning theprayers into a meeting-place to talk and laugh with other sisters, disturbing other people.

Religious exemptions for women during Ramadhan:

Allah granted women many exemptions during this month out ofHis Mercy. One of these exemptions is that a pregnant woman ora breastfeeding woman is permitted to break her fast. Allah The

All Knowing, Knows what feelings a woman has towards her infantand thus permitted her to break her fast to breastfeed him. All she

Yes, its that time of year again whenwe taste the wonderful variety of ourfamilys home cooking. Never in sucha short space of time do we encountersuch scrumptious meals.

Every evening there will be a knockat the door and the aunty from nextdoor will oblige with a sample of hisor her delicacies and vice versa. Yesyouve guessed it- its Ramadhan!

There is feverish activity during thismonth that is truly unsurpassable.Young children will eagerly get up forsuhoor (pre-dawn meal) bright eyedand excited for they have been al-lowed to fast. There will be competi-tions amongst the youngsters as towho can keep the most fasts, as theynever seem to tire.

Then there are those like you andme. When our dutiful parents or elderbrother and sisters come to awake uswe turn over and give a small gruntof Im just coming. Half an hour lat-er there will be shouts of hurry up,youve only got 20 minutes left!.

Well then creep down bleary eyedand be cajoled into eating something. Some of us will crawl back to bedwhilst others wait impatiently moaningis it time for fajr yet?

Someone may be reciting the Quranwhilst others look and feeling guilty for

not doing so, but still pray Fajr and runback to the warm and cozy bed.

Then its morning and the frantic ques-tions of can I brush my teeth. If I dowill it break my fast, but if I dont wontI have bad breath?. No, says mumor dad. Yes you can theres a hadiththat says. replies a dutiful member ofyour family.

Muslims have been urged to fulfil their religious obligations of pay-ing Zakat (alms to the poor) to ensure that the rights of the under-privileged in society are observed. The head of Islamic propagation at Ummah Foundation SheikhSubki Shee said the goal of Zakat was to economically empowerthe less fortunate and said proper distribution of Zakat wil contrib-ute to uplifting the lives of Muslims and also foster good relation-ship among the Ummah.Paying Zakat and giving charity does not lessen your wealth butinstead adds baraka (blessings) to the existing wealth, the Sheikhnoted.

He lamented that many Muslims had neglected their duty to givethe Zakat to the rightful recipients and made reminder for fulfill-ing this obligation which form among the most important tenets ofIslam. The Sheikh added that fulfilling the obligation of Zakat was a way ofexpressing gratitude to Allah for His innumerable blessings. Zakatalso purifies the soul, protects one from greed, boosts social jus-tice and narrows the gap between the rich and the poor, he furthersaid. The Sheikh said this during a distribution exercise by Ummah Foun-dation of foodstuffs to various areas which included Mama FawziaChildrens Home in Kasarani and the Ndalani Islamic Centre in Ma-tuu, Ukambani. The distribution was part of the ongoing Ramadhanactivities by the Foundation to give a helping hand to less fortunatemembers of the community during the holy month.

Coast Muslims MPs have been criticized for wasting time dwellingon political supremacy battle of the province at the expense of com-munity development.Grain Bulk Handlers Limited Chairman, Muhammad Jaffar arguedthat the epic political battle involving prominent MPs in the area has

negatively affected unity among Muslims in the area.Addressing Muslims during Muslim Education and Welfare Asso-ciation (MEWA)' s annual Iftar fundraising programme at MombasaIslamic center, Muhammad said that without formidable unity thou-sands of underprivileged members of the society will not be pulledout of abject poverty they are in at the moment. We should notboast of God given power and that is pride that Allah has warnedthe ummah of Prophet Muhammad against. What is all about thissupremacy war, how many powerful ones have come and gone?he asked. He called on the leaders to unite for the sake of the electorate whovoted them in anticipating better services and it was inconceivablefor the leaders to engage in political battles yet the community waslanguishing in poverty. The chairman observed that a united regional MPs backed by resi-

dents support would easily unlock various thorny issues such asunder development and poor education standard. He also advised the Muslim community in the country to remainsteadfast and vigilant to block any attempt of removing Kadhi courtsby anti-Islam crusaders in the new constitution.Speaking at the same function, Nominated MP Sheikh MohammedDor said the region is on the promising side of developing once thenew constitution will be implemented. He however, asked residents to remain keen on electing leadersto various political positions expressed in the new constitution toachieve the needed development. Constitution is just a guideline.Unless we elect educated leaders with quality of integrity and hon-esty we shall not achieve what we have been agitating for decades,he noted. He said under the new constitution, county government will enjoy

Give Zakat to empower the needy

a share of revenue generated by local based state authorities suchKenya Port Authority (KPA) and Kenya Ferry Services (KFS).The fundraising realized Sh2.7 million and the proceeds are expect-ed to assist in furthering the activities of MEWA which include edu-cational support and drug rehabilitation programmes among other

social welfare programmes undertaken by the organisation.

Due to the serious nature of her crime, she cannot be releasedeven on bail. This was the sentiments of the terror police ChiefNicholas Kamwende on the detention of a mother of two, ZamzamZuleikha was arrested in a night raid on Friday at her Juja roadhome together with her two children aged 2 years and one and halfmonths. In her company were three foreign visitors whom the police claimedwere linked to terrorism activity. At the Kibera law courts where shewas produced on Monday, the serious crime which Kamwende hadreferred to turned out to be an issue which astounded those presentin court. While the expectations were that the charge sheet will be related to

terrorism, the charges read to her indicated that she was found inpossession of another persons national identity card which in itselfis not a crime under Kenyan law. The other ID turned out to be hermothers national identity card.Welcome to the world of the dreaded Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, asquad well known for flagrant abuse of the rights of Muslims.

Also produced in court on the same day was a man which the po-lice claimed was working with an international terrorist syndicatewas arrested in Mombasa. After failing to gather any evidence toincriminate the businessman, Mansour Muhammad Aman, anotherabsurd charge of stealing a vehicle and handling stolen propertywas levied. In 2008, a Nairobi businessman after being held for days andsubjected to rigorous interrogations by the ATPU, he was finallycharged in court with stealing a KRA document valued at Sh3, yes

three bob.Perhaps the prominent case of the gross abuse of human rights per-petrated by the terror police was the detention for more than threeweeks of a five year old child Hafsah Ali Saleh who was arrestedtogether with her mother on terrorism allegations. Even after callsfrom relatives to have the child released on humanitarian grounds, the police refused to give in.

After days of protests from Muslim leaders, human rights groupsand women groups, the pair was eventually released without beingtaken to court not an apology or compensations for their unwar-ranted and illegal detentions. For the last seven years since it came into being, the unit has en-gaged in macabre antics which are a mockery of justice. Jungle lawis what Muslim leaders recently described its modus operandi. Al-most all its victims have been arrested, detained and had their rightsdisregarded when it was clear that there was no shred of evidenceto implicate them on the alleged charges.Of the thousands of people arrested since its started its campaign, significantly, not a single person has been successfully convicted of

    the alleged crimes.

The season of giving and generosity is againhere with us. For Muslims, Ramadhan is aseason of reaping endless rewards as a re-sult of the blessings which are found in thismonth.

Among the ways to benefit from this specialmonth is to make use of the innumerableavailable opportunities which only comes inthis period.Ramadhan is an honorable and blessed month,

and the rewards for good deeds accomplishedin this period are multiplied manifold. Of par-ticular mention is generosity, a virtue whichthe Prophet (sallallahu alaiyhi assallam) wasknow for during this blessed month. NarratedIbn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him):Allahs Messenger (sallallahu alaiyhi assal-lam) was the most generous of all the peopleand he used to reach the peak of generosity inthe month of Ramadhan (Bukhari). In anotherhadith he said, The best charity is that givenin Ramadhan. [At-Tirmithi].

Among the areas where we can gain from thebounties of Ramadhan is through subscribingto the One Shilling initiative by contributing ashilling a day towards a cause whose ultimateobjectives will be to chart a new way forwardfor the growth and development of the Muslimcommunity in the country. The Foundation aspires to realize the dreamsof provision of affordable health facilities, de-velopment of Islamic learning institutions andprovisions of other important social amenitiesthat will benefit Muslims. It is a collective effort that is all inclusive in or-der to realise the benefits of unity of the Mus-lim society. The Foundation has put in place an implemen-tation strategy n several parts of the countryto enable more Muslims to participate in thisventure. One shilling appears to be a very small unit, but, with our collective participation, the shil-ling will grow to leaps and bounds to be ableto contribute greatly to realizing the myriads ofits objectives.During this noble period, we encourage you to

join us by contributing your shilling on a dailybasis towards this important cause. Alterna-tively, you can send in your contribution on aweekly, monthly, semi annual or even annualbasis.Let us join hands to see to it that we ultimatelyturn the dreams of today into the realities of

9/11 families rally in favor of NYC mosqueWASHINGTON: NEW YORK Theplanned mosque and Islamic centerblocks from ground zero got a new boostWednesday from a coalition of supportersthat includes families of Sept. 11 victims.

New York Neighbors for American Val-ues rallied for the first time at a municipalbuilding near ground zero."I lost a 23-year-old son, a paramedic whogave his life saving Americans and theirvalues," Talat Hamdani said, and sup-porting the Islamic center and mosque"has nothing to do with religion. It has todo with standing up for our human rights, including freedom of religion."

Among the nearly 2,800 people killedwhen the World Trade Center was at-tacked in 2001 were more than 30 Mus-lims, she noted.Opponents of the Islamic center projectargue it's insensitive to the families andmemories of Sept. 11 victims to build amosque so close. Supporters cite free-dom of religion. The new coalition was started by mem-bers of 40 civic and religious organiza-tions that "spontaneously called eachother, because we had the feeling thatsomething very negative was happen-ing," said Susan Lerner, executive direc-tor of the New York office of the watchdog

group Common Cause. The controversy was triggered by "irrespon-sible politicians" using it as an election is-sue, she said. Names mentioned at the rallyincluded former House Speaker Newt Ging-

rich, a Republican, and the highest-rankingDemocrat in the Senate, Majority LeaderHarry Reid.Gingrich has suggested that building themosque near ground zero is akin to puttinga Nazi sign "next to the Holocaust Mu-seum." Reid has broken ranks with Presi-dent Barack Obama by saying he thinks themosque should be built elsewhere.Coalition members are now contacting of-ficials, asking them to support the project asa reflection of religious freedom and diver-sity, and the rejection of "crude stereotypesmeant to frighten and divide us."They plan a candlelight vigil near ground

zero on Sept. 10, the eve of the ninth Sept.11 anniversary."This is not just about Muslims; this is aboutwho we are as Americans," said Lerner, adding that to oppose the Islamic center is"a slippery slope. There will always be peo-ple who are offended standing next to peo-ple who are different from others."Rabbi Arthur Waskow, director of NewYork's Shalom Center, said the project willshow the world a form of Islam that espous-es peace.
