Message from the High School Principal:

Dear Parent s,

Welcome to the month of March. As you read this our public speakers, musicians, artists, dancers and actors are alperforming at their respective IASAS Cultural Conventions. Actually if you stop reading right now and open up the IASAwebsite www.iasas.asia you might catch some live streamed action!

The school year is certainly flying by quickly and seniors only have 33 school days before they have study leave for theIB exams. Senior exams are actuall y much sooner, running from Wednesday 21st until Wednesday 28 of this month. O

course I do not need to remind senior s that HS Graduat ion on Tuesday, May 29th

.

A good lead up to the senior exams or “ mock” IB exams has been shown to be excellent preparat ion for t he IB examswhich t his year start on Wednesday May 2. Having complet ed all t heir col lege applicat ions, extended essays and Iinternal assessments, it would be a shame if seniors do not perform in their school exams or even worse their IB exams iMay. We sometimes hear a few rumors about this time of the year from seniors who have already been accepted to theiuniversity of choice, that their IB exams do not matter. This cannot be further from the truth. Universities ask us fofinal transcripts and have been known to withdraw offers where clearly a student has not completed their senior year tothe best of their ability. Last week the high school administration met with the senior class to encourage a sustaineeffort until the end of year, while acknowledging that many hurdles had now been climbed in terms of Extended EssaysInt ernal assessment s, TOK essays and IB orals. Good luck Seniors!

In a change from the past, this year Prom will be much earlier and before the IB exam season. It will be held on April 21

at the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati.

On Tuesday we have our monthly HS Parent Coffee and I encourage you to attend this particular session as I have askethe HS IT department to present on t he topic of “ Digital Cit izens; what i t means to be a digital cit izen today and howtechnology is aff ecting, inf luencing and inspiring children, while changing the face of education.” It is sure to be a verint eractive and thought provoking presentat ion.

At about t his time last year I was extremely pleased to announce that a senior, Manni Cavall i-Sforza had won thprestigious Margaret Sanders Scholarship, one of only four student chosen from int ernat ional schools around the worl d. am even more delighted to announce today that for the first time in the history of this award, ISM has achievedconsecutive winners of t his award! Please j oin wit h me in congratulat ing Julia Saubier, this year’s recipient of t hMargaret Sanders Scholarship, (US$5000 toward College Expenses).

This weekend is another no homework weekend as it is associated wi th IASAS Cult ural Convention. What this means that students have a breather from new homework, they do however have a chance to work to catch up and get aheawit h no new work assigned.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

FROM THE COUNSELING CENTER:

Team Philippines among the Top Four in 2012 World Schools DebatingChampionships

Six Philippine high school students made history by reaching the World Schools Debating Championships(WSDC) semi-final in Cape Town, South Africa in January this year, thereby emerging among the top four teams

of the tournament.

A statement from the Department of Education said that having participated since 2002, this was the furthest

that any team from the Philippines had ever progressed. The team, composed of Joaquin Maria Bonoan Escano

from PAREF Southridge School, Donald Felbaum and Nico Lorenzo Flaminiano from Xavier School, Rico Rey

Francis Holganza, Jr., from PAREF Springdale School in Cebu, Sanjeev Parmanand from Ateneo de

Zamboanga University High School, and Mariella Antoinette Salazar from International School Manila,

finished 4th, – the highest ever for a team from the Philippines.

The team proved to be the tournament's surprise package, earning the respect of judges and coaches all overthe world, as they went on to defeat Canada (2010 champions) in the first round of the finals, and Singapore

(2011 champions) in the quarter-finals. They were narrowly defeated in the semi-finals by eventual champions

Scotland.
