Dear Parents,

"IF YOU'RE DOING SOMETHING YOU CARE DEEPLY ABOUT AND IF YOU BELIEVE IN IT, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TOIMAGINE NOT TRYING TO MAKE IT GREAT." (Jim Collins – Good to Great)

At ISM we sometimes refer to the work of Jim Collins in his book “From Good to Great”. We would like toadvance our program to make it great for our students. Of course time is needed to effectively work ondeveloping programs and one way we create time is to take Professional Development Days. I would like toreport to parents that the last two days has seen some of the best and most productive teacher professionaldevelopment I have witnessed in over twenty years of working in schools. What we were actually doing wasnot necessarily unique to ISM, but what I was most impressed with was the way the HS faculty undertooktheir tasks. The positive energy and vibe witnessed by Mike Dickinson and myself over the last two days, aswe wrestled with curriculum articulation from an Understanding by Design framework, has been

outstanding. Collins talks about having the right people on the bus and I feel very confident that after thelast two days of in service work that not only do we have the right people on the bus, but that we are wellon our way towards the destination of making ISM’s HS curriculum world class.

I trust that students have been able to use last weekend’s no homework weekend and this four day weekendto catch up on all their studies, to prepare in advance and to be refreshed and ready to close out the firstquarter of this school year.

A few HS reminders:

•  FCD are with us next week and there is a parent meeting on Monday, September 14 th at 5:30pm inthe Little Theater.

•  Eid ul Fitr – no classes on Monday September 21st.

•  Battle of the Bearcats-an all day HS tradition is on Wednesday September 23rd.

•  Grade 9 IB parent meeting on Thursday, September 24th has been postponed until February when we

are closer to course selection.

Last Saturday we hosted over 100 senior students in the HS Media Center. They arrived at 9am with theirlaptops and with a record of progress to date on their IB Extended Essay. They left at 5pm having been fedwith pizza and doughnuts and having made significant progress towards completing their extended essay.Teachers volunteer to give up their Saturday to be in the Media Center to work with their assigned extendedessay students. This is the first school that I know that provides this sort of weekend support for its IBdiploma students. I would like to thank Ms Sandy van Nooten, our IB/AP coordinator for organizing the eventand the students and teachers for making it another valuable ISM learning experience.

As I frequently say, schools such as ISM are rich with opportunities and activities. I encourage all students topursue their studies and their interests. Get involved. Work out the balance and have fun! I hope you enjoythe rest of the weekend.

From the Athletics Office:

Dear ISM Parents/Students:

IASAS Housing:

The IASAS Soccer housing letter is now available via; parent bulletins, the ATAC office and it has been distributed toour HS first season athletes via their coaches.HS Students participating in ATAC activities must house in order to be on a team. This is an expectedobligation and is mandated in the school planner and on the ATAC page of the school website.Housing visiting athletes is an integral part of the IASAS experience as all of our varsity athletes will behoused when they go away to tournaments during their HS career. In order for us to ensure we are able to hostsuccessful IASAS exchange weekends and IASAS tournaments we hope that all members of our community who havestudents involved in ATAC activities will be willing to house for this fantastic tournament from October 14-18. Werequire 160 housing placements for our visiting male/female soccer players from the IASAS schools.

Expectations of host familes:Pick up and drop off of visiting athletes each day to school. Visiting athletes can ride the school bus if that ishow your children get to school.Provide a comfortable place for athlete to sleep/assist the athlete with laundry of their uniforms.Provide a breakfast each morning and some evening meals. Athletes will buy lunches at school and may havea team dinner together.Be available each evening to receive curfew calls from the athletes coaches around 10pm.Ensure there is parental supervision at home each evening you are hosting.

Questions will no doubt arise? What if I cannot house? You have to find a friend who can and get them to sign off on the form with full name, detailsetc.

What if I am away at the IASAS Volleyball/Cross Country tournament? You still can house as your parents maynow have space in the house. Quite a number of parents housed last year when their children were away at the IASASSoccer event in Taipei.

What if I can’t house for IASAS Soccer? You must commit to house for an event. Other options during the year are:Pre-I Basketball in November and IASAS Art/Music in March. You should indicate on the return slip which event you willhouse for and have your parents sign off.

What if I live too far away? Alabang and Merville for example are not too far away! We have had a number of students housed here at past tournaments. As a general rule we do not want visiting athletes to travel more than 45minutes to/from school. Please contact us if you have questions about the travel distance.

“HOUSING FOR IASAS EVENTS IS AN EXPECTATION NOT A CHOICE”We hope you will support the 28

thAnnual IASAS Soccer Championships. Our varsity girls will be gunning for a

“THREE-PEAT” and defending the gold medals they have won the past two years and we are anticipating agreat home performance from our boys team as they strive for a medal this year.

If you or your parents have questions please call the ATAC office and/or talk with your coach.

Dear Parents

In an effort to maintain frequent communication with the ISM community about the development and impact of H1N1 influenza on our school community, I would like to reassure you that we continue to monitor sickness and absence throughout the ES, MS

and HS schools. There have been no confirmed cases of H1N1 to our knowledge in the school community and we have seen no identifiable clusters of flu-like illness which may suggest infection with H1N1. Please keep your children at home if they are ill and any child coming to school with a fever will be sent home. Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards from the Clinic
