NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK – April 7 – 13, 2019

This year’s theme is “The Volunteer Factor – Lifting Communities”. The Volunteer Factor celebrates and recognizes the exponential impact of volunteers and how they lift our communities.

Volunteering is one of our greatest cultural ideals. We give it credit for founding our fire departments, libraries, hospitals, universities and nonprofits. It is understood to be fundamental to a healthy community and a meaningful life. And we know, volunteers don’t often get thanked enough. We, at News-in-Five take this opportunity to THANK ALL THOSE WHO VOLUNTEER!

There are many ways to volunteer – coaching youth, belonging to (and working in) a local club, picking up litter around town, fundraising to build or renovate infrastructure, school or church board, visiting shut-ins or at Deer View Lodge, etc. When people volunteer together, the sky is the limit, in terms of what they can achieve.

The effects of volunteering can lead to … feeling healthier, improving your mood, increasing your time management skills and teamwork skills.

As common sense would tell us, baby boomers, who have been the mainstay of many volunteer programs over the last two or three decades – largely because there have been so many of them and they have been of an age when people are inclined to volunteer – are aging. What is less well known is that baby boomers are now approaching an age where they are inclined to diminish their involvement in volunteer work. The volunteer pool has shrunk considerably over the past five to ten years and those who volunteer are increasingly unwilling to take on leadership or administrative roles or to make long term commitments. Changes in the availability of volunteers have led to challenges for volunteer recruitment, management, and retention. Technology is changing everything, volunteering included. Time is our most precious commodity. The faster pace of life means people are trying to juggle more activities and often competing demands in the same 24-hour day. Since volunteering is fundamentally about gifts of time (as well as skills, expertise, and influence), the value of the gift of volunteering has escalated dramatically. That requires better and more respectful use of it by organizations because volunteers are much more picky about how they will and will not spend that most precious resource – time.

Where are volunteers needed? At the Forum, Curling Rink, Sports Groups, Thrift Store, Museum, School, Library, Deer View Lodge, Churches, Clubs such as Lions, Legion, Wildlife, Mountney, 4-H, plus fire department, day care – just to list a few. Where do you plan to volunteer? They need YOU!!

Wawota News-in-Five is a weekly news brief sponsored by the local Lions Club in co-operation with the Town of Wawota, R.M. of Walpole #92 & R.M. of Wawken #93. News-in-Five will not go into local mail boxes but will be made available at various local businesses every Friday.

There will be no charge for local community upcoming events, announcements or appreciations. At present commercial advertisements and/or articles for sale will cost (per issue) 3"x4" or smaller - $2; ¼ page - $5; ½ page or whole page to be printed by you for insert - price negotiable. Advertisements can be run weekly, once a month, or desired frequency.

Contacts for submitting events, articles for sale, ads, etc. will be: Garry 306-739-2437 or Shirley 306-739-2295 or can be e-mailed to [email protected] Cut-off time for submissions will be Wednesday at noon (unless stated otherwise).

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Who turned the thermostat down – this time last week, we were into T-shirts (and thinking about shorts) – and here we are again wearing long sleeves topped with a lined hoodie, etc. We did ask for a slow melt – are we satisfied?

Farmers and “others with unexplainable agriculture knowledge” at coffee row are saying that farming could maybe be starting by mid-month if no snow/rain happens before. Seemingly the winter’s snow didn’t hold much moisture – and the ground was dry last fall so consequently drying has been rapid to date.

A few days ago under cloud cover, a few flakes of snow were seen accompanied by a cool wind. Almost immediately the naysayers were heard to say “told you so”. (We often wonder how they define POSITIVE!) And if you need to “brighten your day”, check out Bev’s Blooms in the window of King’s on Railway!

How did you react to the gas prices on Monday – and no, it was no April Fool’s joke! A 45 dollar bill didn’t quite cover our tab for slightly less than ½ tank – and the news is – it’s most likely going higher – time out – off to check air pressure in our bike tires!

Attended the last show of the 2018/19 Moosomin & District Arts Council on the 26th – Ghost Boy. Two young musicians from Calgary did an entertaining show – guitar (doubling with bass effects), violin, mandolin and vocal. Both are original Saskatchewan products – Shaunavon and P.A. – one began his career in country and the other in jazz and destiny made it happen for their paths to cross! Entertainers are booked for the 2019/20 season beginning on October 19th with five shows scheduled.

For those who subscribe to “The Senior” publication – April issue - will read the article “Dances helped beat the winter doldrums” submitted by Joyce (Porter) Kucharski of Calgary, formerly from Kelso. (Precious memories).

Also in the same issue, the picture on the front cover really caught our attention. At first glance – and several succeeding, the lady looks a lot like our dear departed grade 8 teacher/long time friend, Jean (Armitage) Walker.

We’re hearing “rumblings” at coffee row about a “regular’s” plans to retire at the end of the month – there are varied opinions on how our community is going to accept this change! Nevertheless his “caffeine tainted” buddies are planning for a party – “like no other” – keep tuned for identity and party plans!

Only 44 more sleeps ‘til the first Red Market Barn – May 19th – we’ve had a whole 7 months to prepare for our weekly reports – and thanks to our “detectives”, we’ve got some good “leads” – another “fun” season!

A note to close on – you never get a second chance to make a first impression!

A man visits his aunt in the nursing home. It turns out that she is taking a nap, so he just sits down in a chair in her room, flips through a few magazines, and munches on some peanuts sitting in a bowl on the table. Eventually, the aunt wakes up, and her nephew realizes he’s absentmindedly finished the entire bowl. “I’m so sorry, auntie, I’ve eaten all of your peanuts!” “That’s okay, dearie,” the aunt replies. “after I’ve sucked the chocolate off, I don’t care for them anyway.”

USED EYE GLASSES

‘Tis that time of the year that most homeowners attempt to do what is knows as “spring cleaning” – which incudes finding and throwing away any unused items in their possession.

If you fall into this category and come across some old unused eye glasses, consider giving them to our local Lions Club.

They collect whole sets, parts of & cases which in turn are sent to third world countries to be used.

Drop off places are Lions Phil Weatherald or Garry Dickson – we will even pick them up!

Lion’s Motto - WE SERVE

People can be divided into three groups: 1. Those who make things happen 2. Those who watch things happen 3. And those who wonder what happened.

Q: When does it rain money? A: When there’s “change” in the weather.

We are looking for more ideas and, of course, volunteers. Next Meeting – Monday, April 22 – 7 p.m. at the Village Inn.

BREAKING NEWS !

Gertrude & Heathcliff have arrived to Peddle’s Pond for another season – they were accompanied by Gertrude’s cousin, Wilfred. He is here to check out the territory – Welcome Wilfred! Also, check out the BIG RED CHAIR near the camp kitchen in Centennial Park – a project of the Town and the Wawota Business Enhancement Group. We’re sure the chair will be a popular photo site with families, groups, etc. come summer.

Question: If a house built on two lots is a two-lot house, what is a house built on one lot called?

Answer: A lot smaller.

Many will be shocked to find When the day of judgment nears That there’s a special place in heaven Set aside for volunteers. Furnished with big recliners Satin couches and footstools, Where there’s no committee chairperson No group leader or car pools. No knitting booties or raising money No bazaar or bake sale.

There will be nothing to staple Not one thing to fold or mail, But a finger snap will bring cool drinks And gourmet dinners and rare treats for a king. You will ask who will serve these privileged few, And work for all they are worth? Why all those who reaped the benefits And not once volunteered on earth.

LAST CHANCE TO ENTER !!

Maybe if we did a better job of listening, history wouldn’t have to repeat itself.

There is a senior citizen driving on the highway. His wife calls him on his cell phone and in a worried voice says, “Herman, be careful! I just heard on the radio that there is a madman driving the wrong way on # 1 highway!” Herman says, “I know, but there isn’t just one, there are hundreds!”
