Thank you for your cooperation.

Wishing everyone the best
as we welcome the New Year.
We sincerely thank everyone
for the continuing support and encouragement
and look forward to working with you in our 16th year.

AND THE WEATHER
Figured the weather deserved its own space over the break. A cold chill visited over the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, however “almost spring-like” days in-between made the overall pretty nice. If we overlook the wind chill readings, a -20° to -25°C isn’t all that bad – and even better, that’s only -4° to -8°F!
Keeping in touch with our “snowbird friends”, their trip south was less than pleasant (some days) – snow evident as far as New Mexico – so sad!!
Complaining has never been known to help – just enjoy the WHATEVER!
As we go to press – YIPES – what do BRIGHT sundogs mean??!!

Don’t say: If you get pulled over by the RCMP, don’t say: “Officer, you look like the guy whose picture is on my girlfriend’s night table.”

Dear Secret Santa:
Every year you leave us a gift at our gate. You never expect thanks. You never expose your identity. The grandchildren remember from year to year and it's fun. Thank you Secret Santa.
- From the Fords
BELIEVE IT OR NOT ??
The following was heard at coffee row – so you decide!
A rural resident (farmer) from east of Town noticed something was interfering with his outdoor Christmas lights. On closer inspection, he realized that coyotes were chewing on the strings of lights – and even destroying some!
What ever happened to the menu of rabbits, small rodents and road-kill – guess they’re going modern, too??
It is not what you do for your children
but what you have taught them
to do for themselves,
that will make them successful human beings.
- Ann Landers

Wawota Curling Club would like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to Shawn & Kristen, Sierra, Rowan and Chesney Murray for all the work and time they spent at the rink this fall to get the basement renovated! If it had not been for this family's dedication, we would not have the basement looking (and smelling) so good. Shawn organized all the contractors including insulation, plumbing and electrical, sourced all the building materials and headed up the demolition crews and reconstruction. There were many more volunteers, but do not want to name because of fear for missing anyone. Much of the materials were covered by the Facilities Grant we received from the Wawota Recreation Board.
Thank you also to the Town of Wawota for making our building wheelchair accessible and Don Fowler donating your time and materials for raising the floor in the porch. Thanks also to Neil Weatherald for donating your time building the very sturdy fire escape stairs which funding for materials came from Enbridge--wow! Duane Lamontagne spends tireless hours putting the ice in and continually strives for the best ice surface and he has done an incredible job! Elly Van Winkoop also spends many hours keeping our books in tip-top shape!
Obviously, we are very fortunate for all the donations, advertising dollars, grants and most importantly our volunteers and executive! Our membership continues to increase and the youth program has 45 kids involved! Without our members we wouldn't have all the fun we have all season!
Please stop in and if interested in trying out the sport, we had a clinic on January 4th for adults and our Cash Spiel will be January 11-13 so enter a team! Like us on FB Wawota Curling Club to see all updates.
- Carla Weatherald, President
WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)
WHOOSH – there goes 2018 – here we are into the second week of a New Year! Have you broken any of your New Year’s resolutions yet? We spoke with someone the other day and they told us their list of resolutions are dropping like dominoes – we were hesitant to ask what they were!
A couple of weeks before the Festive Season arrived, a friend happened to be driving down a residential street in North Brandon and he came upon a flock/herd/group of wild turkeys – yes, there was a Witness! Wonder if they hadn’t checked their calendar – pretty brave – a new take on MEALS ON WHEELS!
We’ve all heard of – and maybe seen – a Charlie Brown Christmas tree – one with few branches. Well, this season friends gave us a healthy poinsettia – all went well ‘til we decided to bring out a couple of artificial arrangements containing poinsettias. Within 48 hours, our REAL plant began to sulk with leaves falling as we watched. (We’ve heard of jealousy but this is ridiculous!) We were guests at a friend’s Christmas – they too had a poinsettia – and it had “caught the same virus”. (Our inner vice says “too much water” – okay, next year!!)
More news from the Festive Season. Did you notice the one odd street decoration across from Farm & Auto? (At first, we thought maybe Imperial Oil had put it there in apology for all the dandelions we have to witness each summer in their vacant lot) – But NO! We delegated SCOOP to solve the question. It seems that Town Council are considering new street Christmas decorations for another year. (This info comes from a very reliable source for those who want to doubt the fact.) One of the Town maintenance men designed the new idea – check it out – it got our vote! Yes, the candy canes – and others – have served their time – need a change!
Hockey fans were treated to some top-notch entertainment over the holidays with the World Junior Championships taking place in Vancouver and Victoria. Out host team were doing great until Finland turned on the STOP light. All the games – even with Canada absent, eh – were a treat to watch – fast action and few penalties! And for those who prefer football there was lots to see – and will be for weeks to come!
And on the subject of football – we hear that the proposed Halifax team – the Atlantic Schooners – are more than eager to hit the turf. Before Christmas, they had merchandise – t-shirts, hoodies, etc. for sale – some already sold out. More than 6,000 season ticket applications have been sold – plans for a stadium soon to be unveiled.
What about those gas prices over the holidays – surely the gas companies overlooked a line somewhere – normally long weekends, holidays see an automatic hike. Okay, so you’re saying “We’ll pay for the temporary reprieve,” – actually we thought we had already.
And the money we’re saving on gas will be used up with the increase of mailing a letter – life goes on – and where are we going? – HIGHER!!
Here we are at the end of the first column in 2019 – we appreciated and enjoyed the two-week rest – and now the special time with family and just plain relaxing – is now a memory. Isn’t it odd – one looks forward to a “break” from the regular schedule but on the “flip-side” looks forward to getting back to “the normal” again – yeah, we’re glad to be back at it. (Thanks for the comments that we were missed – hope that was in a good way!!)
On New Year's Eve, Peter was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. 'What are you doing out here at four o'clock in the morning?' asked the police officer. 'I'm on my way to a lecture,' answered Peter. 'And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year’s Eve?' enquired the constable sarcastically. 'My wife will,' slurred Peter grimly.

Why ?? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their
prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front? Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries or poutine and a diet coke? Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters? Why do we leave cars and trucks worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless
junk in the garage? Why can’t women put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word?

A three year old gave this reaction to her Christmas dinner … “I didn’t like the turkey, but I sure liked the bread he ate.”
Here is a resolution that’s well worth keeping:
To leave the old with a burst of song To recall the right and forgive the wrong, To forget the thing that binds you fast To the vain regrets of the year that’s past. To dare to go forth with a purpose true To the unknown task of the year that’s new. To help your brother along the road To ease his work and lift his load. To add your gift to the world’s cheer, Is to have and to give a Good New Year.

ALONG THE FLYERS’ BLUE LINE
The Forum saw the biggest attendance of the season (so far) on December 22nd when the Kipling/ Windthorst Oil Kings came to Town. The penalty box saw little action until mid-way through the game – then tempers flared and the game sheet rapidly filled up – minors, five minutes and game misconducts. Period scores were 2-0, 4-1, 8-2 – Flyers taking the win. Pool winners were Kathy Olson, Bradley Davis and Tod Davies. Ryan Toth from Kipling took home the guaranteed 50/50 prize of $1,000 – sponsored by Kenosee Inn and Rococo Constn.
Santa – in his slimmer form – and one large Elf skated with the teams in warm-up and handed out goodies to the younger folk.
Following the Holiday break and Flyers’ #5 marriage on the 5th, hockey once again became the “focal point” when the Flyers travelled to Midale on the 8th for a make-up game – result Midale 2, Flyers 1.
Ain’t it funny how the colours red, white and blue represent freedom until they are flashing behind your car?
