CHRISTMAS ??

In the huge department stores, Crowds on crowds shopping, waiting for bargain gifts. Eye ‘em, try ‘em, buy ‘em! Charge now, pay later, or exchange it. Is that Christmas? On the streets outside, the cold rushing faces carry their bargain gifts home. And street corner Santas clang each “very merry” to the roar of an amplified Silent Night. Is that Christmas? Within the bus at last, they sit or mainly stand clutching packages, ribbon wrapped, with tired, unsmiling faces. Good reason, too: Shopping is just plain hard work! Is that Christmas? Down the street, right there, a little house and a family relaxed around a smallish tree. Father and Mother look with love at their children. And there is joy… peace … That’s Christmas!!

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

Here we are doing the last column for the last issue of our 2019 paper – seems only a few days ago that we were wishing our readers “Happy New Year”. Good news though – next year will have one more day (aka Leap Year) unless someone comes up with an idea to delete/change that too!

Surprise – the weather has changed – and happy to say for the better! When that -20° (& lower) hits suddenly, it takes a little adjusting to say the least – makes one check twice to see if they’ve forgotten to put their pants on! Hopefully the “weatherperson” will see fit to make conditions favourable over the Festive Season for those travelling to be with family and friends.

We’re enjoying all the Festive Season programs on the “tube” – yes, and once again Sound of Music was one of the favourites even though it has been viewed …how many times? Obviously, we aren’t in the group who think Festive music is “overdone”.

More on the entertainment scene – we were fortunate to be able to accompany friends to Eli Barsi’s 11th Annual Christmas production in Kipling on the 15th – another great afternoon of music. This year’s special guests were Duane Steele & band from Red Deer, AB. Two of Eli’s great nieces (10 & 12 years) each did a couple of numbers – vocal and violin.

On a sadder note, we hear via social media (not a choice of information, however) that our friends from Country Blend had some of their equipment (guitars) stolen while on their final tour in Lloydminster recently – the “empty feeling” is shared.

On a recent visit to another community, we read in their local paper about a “dainties exchange”. How it works: you make a couple dozen of your favourite recipe; convince some friends to do likewise; pick a day to meet to exchange and magic – you go home with a variety! What better way to socialize – and at the same time get new ideas – and maybe new friends! Well, here we are with no more to write (amazing) – so ‘til next year, have a safe and happy holiday season!!

You asked ?? Question: We so enjoyed and appreciated the Lions Seniors’ Christmas Supper on the 9th. Who are Wawota Lions’ Members? Answer: Membership is presently at 34 members. They are: Rob Pilloud, Shawn Murray, Dean Horvath, Joel Carpenter, Blaine Ehr, Tim Hamilton, Jordan Black, Doug Bourgon, Brent Pryce, Kelly Brimner, Calvin Lincoln, Tim Lincoln, Neil Weatherald, Doug Carpenter, Trevor Latham, Mark Cudmore, Dale Easton, Rob Niven, Dale Wilson, Darrell Petterson, Wade Easton, Jeff Engle, Kevin Greenbank, Norm Oliver, Garry Wilson, Harold Laich, Chad Jackson, Todd Wilson, James Cudmore, Stacy Schill, Kyle Smyth, Phil Birnie, Phil Weatherald, Mark Weatherald.

On a trip to see Santa, my friend’s young son, Danny climbed onto St. Nick’s lap and shared his wish list. Later that day, in another store, there was Santa again. “And what would you like for Christmas?” he asked Danny. Shaking his head, Danny sighed, “You really need to write these things down.”

At this joyous time of year, remember “The Reason for the Season.

THOUGHTS FOR THE NEW YEAR

I have a brand-new calendar That very soon will be Hanging on my kitchen wall So I can plainly see … … A whole new year of days untouched By failure or defeat, Each little square a symbol of New challenges I’ll meet. New promises to honor And new resolves to make New projects in the offing New jobs to undertake. New friendships to establish, New dreams to entertain New fields I hope to conquer New heights I may attain. Each little square is empty And it’s strictly up to me How I will use those untouched days That lie ahead of me. But before I turn my back upon The year that’s almost through I’d better take myself in hand And see what I can do, To bolster my defences Against failure or defeat, And gear myself to tackle The challenges I’ll meet. For only by correcting The errors of the past Can I hope to make the coming year Better than the last.

- Author Unknown

THANK YOU … To all my family and friends for their calls and visits through this terrible year. It has really helped. My hip and eye are coming along good. I wish you all, a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. God Bless.

- Josephine

On the last day of school before Christmas vacation, I sent my son to the bus stop with a box of chocolates for the school bus driver. Three weeks later, I was getting his school bag ready to return to classes when I unearthed the box. “Why didn’t you give the driver her chocolates?” I quizzed. “I did, Mom,” he protested. “I gave her one.”

PREDICTIONS FOR 2020

➢ That postage costs will increase after the New Year (hopefully it will find its way to the Pension Fund).

➢ That we’ll hear a lot more on the proposed Halifax entry into the CFL – Atlantic Schooners.

➢ That a lot of diseased trees will be removed in our Town.

➢ That at least two more new businesses will “pop-up” in 2020.

➢ That a local resident will be the recipient of a “windfall” – lottery, trip, etc.

➢ That the former Esso property on Railway Avenue will still not become available for sale.

➢ That spring weather will come early in the New Year, i.e. April.

➢ News-in-Five will celebrate its 18th year with a free coffee & cookie event.

➢ Two new families will move into Town. ➢ Wawota Heritage Days will be another success story. ➢ That the Riders will be in the finals of the 2020 Grey

Cup. ➢ And … that there will be at least one error – typo,

spelling, grammar, etc.-- in each News-in-Five paper in 2020 …and that ‘someone’ will point them out to us.

What was our ‘score’ for 2019 predictions ?? Correct: ➢ The RTR gang will continue to make pies, jams,

jellies, etc. ➢ More than 5 homes will find new owners in Town. ➢ One new business will start up in the new year. ➢ A 3rd party predicts Garry will come out ahead in the

Rider Wager with Darren. ➢ Town Council will resurface some streets in Town. ➢ New-in-Five will continue to keep you informed on

local happenings. Some Wrong ones: ➢ Flyers were not in Big 6 Finals. ➢ Coach Jones will find a new quarterback – oops it

was Coach Dickenson who got us Cody Fajardo – and the Riders did not quite make CFL final game.

➢ Riders wagering continued but had a changed venue and no rule changes.

➢ The trans-mountain pipeline has not yet become a reality.

➢ The Esso property was not turned over to the town (we keep hoping!)

➢ No local fisherman snagged a record breaking catch and had witnesses.

➢ January did not give us above seasonal temps. ➢ Wawota did not have a lite-up contest in 2019.

THANK YOU

I would like to take the opportunity to express how thankful & grateful I am to live in an area surrounded by so many caring communities. To honour Lester’s wishes there was no funeral and obituary. Thank you for the hugs, kind words, texts, phone calls, cards, food, gifts, for the visits and everyone who has stayed with me as well as those who provided transportation. I have received help in more ways than I can mention. Thank you for being there for our families. Lester believed in helping others and living in a way that makes the best of each day. He approached life with a sense of humour that let you know that you were loved and important. Lester would have been touched by the caring and support you have shown towards his family. Your thoughtfulness will always be cherished, Ronda Brickley & family

Jim asked his friend Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Christmas. “Yes,” came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, “'I’ve bought her a belt and a bag.” “That was very kind of you,” Jim added, “I hope she appreciated the thought.” Tony smiled as he replied, “So do I – and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

ATTENTION CITIZENS OF WAWOTA:

The Council of the R.M. OF WALPOLE NO. 92 are very

concerned about the low numbers of ambulance personnel

currently operating the Wawota Ambulance Service and

the fact that there is no one stepping up to help out!

Did you know that the ambulance service no longer runs 24/7? There are fewer and fewer number of qualified personnel to cover all ambulance shifts therefore

Wawota goes without service during those times. There is an average wait time of 35 minutes for

an ambulance to come from another community to respond to an emergency in our community!

Did you know that personnel do indeed receive remuneration for being a

“Community Ambulance Attendant &/or Driver”? Ambulance personnel are members of CUPE and are a part of a negotiated contract along with

other Sun Country Health Region (SCHR) employees. Personnel receive $5.00/hour for every hour

on standby. If you are called out for any reason, personnel are then paid approximately $21.00(+)

per hour for actual time out or for at least a minimum of 3 hours.

Have you heard rumors that SCHR does not pay for all the expenses paid out in

order to get certified? SCHR pays for a good portion of the expense to get certified once you have completed the EMR

course, the EMR college of Paramedics exam and successfully been hired by SCHR (will also need

Criminal Check, Work Reference and Minimum Class 5 Drivers License). You must pay for all

expense up front then wait to be reimbursed by SCHR.

In an effort to assist with recruitment of ambulance staff for Wawota &

District, the Council of the R.M. Walpole are proposing to pay for all the

expenses incurred for you to become an Emergency Medical Responder

(EMR). Fees will be paid on your behalf up front with no repayment

schedule required.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED in becoming certified and helping out on

YOUR ambulance – please contact the RM of Walpole office

@ 306-739-2545 at your very earliest convenience.

Any time you can give to be on ambulance is more time that Wawota is covered!
