“Bolte Bridge”

I took this photo from the Williamstown Ferry on the day group outing in January and thought it offered a different perspective of the Bolte Bridge. I took it with a Canon 5D Mk IV and a 24-105 f4 lens at 24 mm, f8, 1/200, ISO 100. It was edited in Lightroom, and the with Nik colour Effects using the details enhacer. I do not normally use effects as extreme as this but thought that it gave an added dimension to an otherwise simple image.

As you know, I usually reserve this column for serious report-

ing about what’s happening in the club and on the committee, but this month I thought that for a change of pace I would share some thoughts with you about the plummeting price of photographic equipment now that Chinese companies are increasingly entering the market.

For example, I have been in the market recently for a new flash unit for my Nikon, given that the old one is a 15 year old Vivitar bought in WalMart for $20, is only use-able in manual mode, and I foolishly let batteries corrode inside it. Because I’m getting lazier as I get older, I thought a nice easy i-TTL unit would be just the thing. Anyway, having been startled at the high price and low specs of Nikon Speed-lights I started hunting around eBay and some Chinese sites that Steve Strauss put me on to.

Bottom line, I picked up a unit with a guide number of 58 (in metres), which does i-TTL/TTL/M/

MULTI/S1/S2, Flash time1/200s-1/20000s, 8 levels of output con-trol(1/128-1/1), hot shoe, wifi and optical triggering, all for the princely sum of $56. If you want to check it out they have Canon version too at http://stores.ebay.com.au/emilyan-dlily?_trksid=p2047675.l2563.

I stress that neither I nor the club is recommending this product or vendor, just passing on the info.

It makes me wonder though, how many speedlights could Nikon (or Canon) expect to sell at around 10 times the price for simi-lar specs? Probably professionals would pay 10x, but perhaps not many amateurs.

This is not the first time I’ve picked up bargains on accessories either. I got an infra red remote con-trol shutter release for $8 from an Aussie eBay vendor 2 years ago and it works just fine, and a clone of a Black Rapid shoulder strap for $9. I honestly can’t see a difference from the $120 original.

There’s been other stuff too, but

the point of this is not to boast about bargains I’ve found (or admit how cheap I am), but to reflect on where this is all lead-ing. I’m reminded of the Japa-nese industrial journey from their reputation of making supposed poor quality in the 1960’s to their reputation for outstanding qual-ity today.

It won’t stop at accessories either. I recently read a review on Petapixel of a Yongnuo “nifty fifty” lens for Canon. A 50mm f1.8 lens, fully compatible, for $40 (in the U.S.), reported in a compari-son with the original lens as “ it stood against the Canon punch for punch.”

With some Chinese companies already making their own brands of cameras, and most of the main-stream brands now being made in China, it makes me wonder when we will start to see new DSLRs coming out to challenge Nikon, Canon and Olympus. It’s already happening with cars and mobile phones. Exciting times ahead we hope

Cheers,

Terry Dyson ¤President.

Daytime Group

Last month the day group had a photo shoot at McClelland gal-

lery in Langwarrin. It was a cold and wet morning and I hope that some of the group was feeling a little more inspired than I was. Dennis Nolan came along with his fancy new Sony A9 - a very impressive looking camera and from all I read an excellent per-former. The pressure is on Dennis! ( the one photo I have seen from it looked pretty good.) I left early (feeling poorly) but the rest of the group stayed on for coffee. Bring some photos taken on the day or from other visits to the Gallery to the next meeting.

Next meeting will be on in the library (16th August at 10:00 AM for 10:30 start). I have not organised a guest speaker for this meeting but thought that we could have a session on a few image enhancement techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop, not

so much of basic enhancement but some shortcuts and other fairly quick processes. Rod Car-ruthers will show the group how he uses focus staking on macros (also useful for landscape), and I will show how you can use photo stacking to get rid of unwanted people or excess noise ( also how to use this technique to simulate longer exposures of water with-out filters or tripods. If anyone else has anything to raise bring your laptop and be prepared to conduct a short presentation.

I intend to be away in Sep-tember and October and Dennis Nolan has offered to organise the September outing and the Octo-ber meeting. Any ideas for Octo-ber would also be welcomed.
