Chat with a localJayson Sutcliffe, co-owner of the SK8HOUSE

SK8HOUSE is a family friendly roller skating and roller blading entertainment venue owned by World Champion skater, Jayson Sutcliffe. They cater to all ages and skill levels and provide a safe and fun environment

What is your background in Skating? My background in skating rinks extends back to my childhood when my sister first took me to one in 1979. I instantly became addicted to skating and soon discovered there was an opportunity to be a part of a club. That led to my 35 year career as a competitor and trainer in figure skating, and now, rink owner! As an athlete, I competed on the international stage over two decades and earned 13 top three world medals, four of them gold. My first World Title was in 1995 and my last in 2005. Being a World Champion was what I dreamed of as a child and realised it when I was 25. My dream beyond that title was to see others strive for the same goals in the area of excellence I had excelled in.

Tell us a bit about what you do at SK8HOUSE?My role at SK8HOUSE varies as a rink ‘owner’ from everyday duties, to a professional instructor in skate classes, through to coaching an elite level of skaters competing internationally. It’s a pretty hands-on job in all aspects with a real personal approach given my direct contact with customers on a daily basis. I’m also heavily involved in all of the advertising - a full time job in itself, but I love the creative side of things and it engages me more with the social side of the business too.

What’s your local secret? The Frankston Pier has to be my favourite ‘secret’. As a teen, I spent many weekends at the pier working in the café serving hot chips; it was owned by a family we skated with. I have fond memories there and still enjoy being able to visit it and enjoy the same community feel.

What else is happening at SK8HOUSE?There’s always a lot happening at SK8HOUSE with classes, public sessions, parties, school groups and private functions, so we’re constantly entertaining and keeping busy. The first stage of our renovation is taking place in June when we plan to extend the skating rink surface, put in much needed new bathrooms and make some other changes to start bringing the rink into 2016. It’s really exciting and long overdue. As new owners, it’s a motivation for us to be able to enhance an already great facility on the Mornington Peninsula for the public to enjoy.

Check out SK8HOUSE website for opening times, school holiday program and class times.
